Abstract:A new process to resource rice hull was proposed for minimizing the wastes and getting the maximum yield of saccharide. It included three steps, i.e., continuous steam explosion step, continuous near-critical water reactions step and combustion step. The influences of temperature and residence time on the yields of water soluble products and the contents of different components in the solid residue were studied. With the optimized conditions, about 80% of the carbon in the rice hull could be converted into aqueous phase products in which the yield of oligomers and monose could be over 40%(wt). From the analyses of different components in the solid residues, hemi-cellulose was decomposed mainly in the steam explosion step while cellulose was decomposed in the near-critical water reactions step.
Preparation of highly dispersed nanosilica from rice husk by aprecipitation method combined with high pressure homogenization

Abstract:Based on the traditional precipitation method and using rice husk ash as the raw material,an innovated precipitation method combined with high pressure homogenization was proposed to prepare highly dispersed nanosilica.The high pressure homogeneous technology was used for super-fine comminution of SiO2 particles.The effects of precipitation reaction end-point pH,acid concentration,reaction temperature,homogeneous pressure and surfactant on the properties of nanosilica were investigated.The optimal technological conditions of generating nanosilica from rice husk ash by precipitation combined with high pressure homogenization method were obtained as follows:the precipitation reaction end-point pH was at 8.5～9.0,the hydrochloric acid concentration was 1.0 mol/L,the precipitation reaction temperature was 60 ℃ and was homogeneous pressure was at 69～103.4 MPa.Results showed that the whiteness of nanosilica products under the optimal preparation conditions was about 93％,and the DBP value of prepared nanosilica was about 3.3 mL/g.The prepared nanosilica products were obvious of high purity and high dispersion.

Abstract:Rice straw stands as a highly sustainable agricultural residue enriched in silica and carbohydrates. This study delves into the potential of rice straw, focusing on the impact of green-synthesized nano-silica particles on biohydrogen fermentation using Enterobacter aerogenes . Rice straw was subjected to three different leading pretreatments, i.e., organsolv, sulfuric acid, and sodium hydroxide, to decimate the lignocellulosic structure. In addition to these, sodium hydroxide was employed as a secondary pretreatment for the organosolv- and sulfuric acid-pretreated straw. Three distinct nano-silica particles were extracted from the liquor of alkali pretreatments and examined using XRD, XRF, FE-SEM, and DLS analysis. The solid fractions of pretreatment were enzymatically hydrolyzed and subjected to dark fermentation, achieving the maximum biohydrogen yield of 156.9 ± 2.0 mL per g total solids (TS) from the organosolv-sodium hydroxide pretreated straw. Further improvement of biohydrogen yield to 178.3 ± 4.2 mL per g TS was obtained by adding 200 ppm of nano-silica particles isolated from one-step sodium hydroxide pretreatment. Analyzing the metabolic products exhibited that nano-silica particles modified the metabolic pathway, leading to an increase in acetic acid production and a decrease in ethanol production. It was concluded that nano-silica particles isolated from untreated and treated rice straws have the potential to boost biohydrogen generation. However, the degree of improvement was dependent on the composition and structure of the nanoparticles.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Rice husk is an abundant agricultural biomass and a potential source of amorphous silica and porous silicon. To produce high-purity SiO2 and Si from rice husks, multiple steps of acid leaching to remove impurities and heat treatment to reduce residual carbon are necessary. In this study, a simple mechanochemical (magnesio-milling) experiment was conducted using an attrition mill to convert rice husk ash (RHA) and gasifier-derived rice husk ash (GRHA) into porous Si under various acid leaching (hydrochloric acid and lactic acid) and heat-treatment conditions. Three noteworthy results were obtained. First, eco-friendly lactic acid can be used instead of the harmful acid (hydrochloric acid). Next, the heat-treated GRHA was converted to Si via magnesio-milling without acid leaching. Finally, the carbon content (<0.3 wt%) of RHA and GRHA is a key factor affecting the conversion of SiO2 into Si based on elemental analysis. The purities of the Si samples prepared from RHA and GRHA, analyzed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry, were 97.66% and 95.62%, respectively. Furthermore, the porous Si prepared using RHA and GRHA can be utilized as a high value-add material such as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries and nanostructured materials.

Abstract:This study explores the conversion of agricultural waste into valuable industrial precursors, specifically focusing on the production of silica nanoparticles from rice husk (RH) via calcination and sol–gel processes. The synthesized particles underwent detailed analysis to assess their chemical composition, structural features, morphological characteristics, and size distribution. This comparative analysis evaluates the effectiveness of various methods in generating silica from RH and examines the impact of different drying techniques, including freeze-drying and conventional thermal drying, on the properties of the resulting silica nanoparticles. Utilizing a combination of sol–gel and freeze-drying techniques produced spherical nanoparticles with diameters of 10 to 20 nm, characterized by size uniformity, clear contours, and minimal aggregation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified the amorphous nature of the silica, as evidenced by diffraction peaks typical of amorphous silica in the RH-derived samples processed via different methods. Significantly, the XRD patterns of the calcination-derived silica showed no foreign peaks, indicating a purer amorphous state. The findings of this study are anticipated to contribute to the development of innovative and efficient silica nanomaterials, fostering the sustainable use of agricultural waste.

Abstract:The structural and chemical properties of biogenic silica obtained from rice husk using an acid treatment were determined in order to explore its potential as a support in the synthesis of catalysts for the remediation of contaminants in water. Using thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG) the total amount of silanol groups on the surface was quantified and by means of DRIFT spectroscopy and TPR-NH 3 analysis, the amount of silanol groups present (isolated, geminal and vicinal) were identified and quantified. The silica structure was confirmed by XRD and a silica content of 99.3% was determined by XRF. The zeta potential measurements revealed an isoelectric point at pH 5.4. Finally, the presence of non-bridging oxygen centers – NBO type oxygen defects on the surface of the biogenic silica was identified by DRIFT and EPR spectroscopy techniques. New knowledge is uncovered aimed at the future exploration of rice husk silica produced by a more environmentally friendly method, as a potential support in the synthesis of catalysts.

Abstract:Rice industrialization generates large amounts of rice husk, and when this husk is burned, substantial volumes of ash are produced as a result. The lack of a sustainable application for these ashes constitutes a serious environmental liability. Employing rice husk ash as a starting material to manufacture higher-value products fulfills both environmental and economical purposes. Particularly, the presence of silica and carbon in intimate contact makes rice husk ash an attractive precursor for carbothermal reduction and nitridation processes. In the present work, a pre-treatment was applied to a locally sourced industrial rice husk ash, aiming to render not only a more appropriate starting material for carbothermal reduction and nitridation, but also precipitated silica as a by-product. This process involved a simple alkaline digestion step followed by filtering and acid precipitation of the solubilized silica. For carbothermal reduction and nitridation, the treated ash was introduced in graphite crucibles with graphite lids and held at soaking temperatures between 1200 °C and 1400 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere for 3 h. The pretreatment imposed on the ash permitted the adjustment of the carbon-to-silica ratio, producing a substantial improvement in the carbothermal reduction and nitridation results, and enabling the simultaneous obtention of precipitated silica. α- and β- silicon nitride, and silicon oxynitride whiskers were obtained through carbothermal reduction and nitridation of the treated rice husk ash. The whiskers obtained had lengths in the millimeter range with cross-sections ranging from about 100 nm up to 500 nm.

Abstract:Silica nanoparticles (n-SiO2), graphene nanosheets (n-Gr) and graphene oxide nanosheets (n-GO) were synthesized from the cost-effective biomass rice husk ash (RHA) by the simple chemical process. The crystallite size and micro-strain of all samples were calculated from XRD-peak profile analysis to be 1.5 - 5.4 nm and 8.11 - 28.64 MPa, respectively. FE-SEM images confirmed SiO2 nanoparticles with clustered spherical shapes and petals form of n-Gr and n-GO named RHA-1, RHA-2, RHA-3, respectively. The symmetric stretching band vibrations Si-O and O-Si-O were detected at 472, and 620 cm−1 in the FTIR spectrum, which confirmed the presence of n-SiO2. Bands at 1067, 1106, 1624 cm−1 are related to C-O stretching vibration, anhydrides C-O stretching and C=C stretching vibration of n-Gr, and n-GO, respectively. The core-level of XPS of C showed the binding energy of C‒C (283.21 eV), (291.11 eV), and O‒C=O (294.11 eV), which augmented the formation of graphene. The ratio of Raman peaks (ID/IG <1) is further confirmed the formation n-Gr of graphitic structure of sp2 carbon.
A Detailed Study of the Effects of Pyrolysis Temperature and Feedstock Particle Size on the Preparation of Nanosilica from Rice Husk

Abstract:In this paper, an optimized process for preparation of photosensitive nanosilica from rice husk (RH) is described. The rice husk sample was pretreated by soaking in deionized water to remove most of the alkali metals and partial fixed carbon. Most metal oxides, especially alkaline metal oxides and alkaline-earth metal oxides, were removed to a certain extent after the soaking pre-treatment. Soaking pretreatment may remove the hydrogen bonds or extractives between hemi-cellulose and cellulose, which affects the thermal stability of both molecules. To thoroughly analyze the soaking process, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to obtain the mass loss behavior of soaked rice husk. The characteristics of the nanosilica prepared from the method described in this paper are superior to those of fumed silica. The silica content of the nanosilica reached a record of 99.92% in pyrolysis method. The optimum preparation conditions were as follows: a rice husk feedstock particle size of between 250 and 420 mu m, a pyrolysis temperature of approximately 610 degrees C, a hydrolysis temperature of 120 degrees C, a 1:10 (g/ml) ratio of rice husk to acid, a hydrolysis time of 4 h, and a hydrochloric acid (HCI) concentration of 8% (wt.%). A detailed study of the effects of the pyrolysis temperature and feedstock particle size was conducted, filling the gap in systematic research on the nanosilica preparation process using the pyrolysis method. The complete process of pyrolysis for pretreated rice husk is described, including the decomposition of the major constituents, volatilization of gases and the formation of silica. The results of this study provide a deep understanding of nanosilica production by pyrolyzation. Abstract:Rice is one of the major crops grown through the world. Once the paddy is separated from the rice grain, the kernel (hull) is removed from rest of the grain. This constitutes about, one third of the total mass of grains, commonly termed as „Rice Husk‟ or „Rice Hull‟. Rice husk is an agricultural residue abundantly available in rice producing countries. The annual rice husk produced in India amounts generally approximately 12 million tones. Rice husk is generally not recommended as cattle feed since its cellulose and other sugar contents are low. Furfural and rice bran oil are extracted from rice husk. Industries use rice husk as fuel in boilers and for power generation. Among the different types of biomass used for gasification, rice husk has a high ash varying from 18-20%. Silica is the major constituent of rice husk ash varying from 85-95%. With such a large ash content silica content in the rice husk it becomes economical to extract silica from the ash, which has wide market and also takes care of the ash disposal. In this project an attempt is made to introduce a simple process to manufacture precipitated silica from this waste rice husk. It solves the disposal problem of husk as well as valuable product is manufactured from it. Experimental data shows better performance as well as easy industrial implementation of the process.

Abstract:Rice husk being the major agro-waste could serve as the renewable source of silica. This silica could be a replacement for industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Industrial grade silica require purity ranging from 80 to 100% necessitating the elimination of organic and metallic impurities from biomass. This study compares the ability of pre-treatment process in improving the purity of silica. Silica with difference in purity is extracted by employing simple (conventional alkaline treatment—CAT) and rigorous (soaking/acid/alkaline—SAA) pretreatment on husk. The alkali earth metal removal percentage are 41.71%, 81.69%, and 40.37% for Na, K, and Mg respectively by adopting SAA method. In addition, the significance of impurity elimination is reflected in the textural properties where the SAA silica exhibited an 80% increase in BET surface area compared to CAT silica. SAA silica was purely amorphous whereas CAT silica showed crystalline phase in XRD analysis. Ultrasonication effect on size reduction was more pronounced. The binding nature of elements from XPS analysis indicated the presence of silica as silicon oxide and silicon dioxide. The elemental composition of SAA silica revealed drastic decrease in the contents of Fe 2 O 3 , K 2 O, and Al 2 O 3 compared to CAT silica. The difference in silica arises from the soaking process imparting hydrophilic nature to the husk increasing the hydroxyl group on its surface. The interaction between the hydroxyl group and the acid during pre-treatment aided in impurity elimination. This suggests the SAA pretreatment as suitable process for efficient extraction of silica through impurity elimination.

Abstract:Rice husk is a bulky byproduct with a high silica content from rice milling. In this study, the application of an acid-catalyzed ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment was studied for processing rice husks with a rugged structure. The pretreatment conditions were 130°C for 30 min with 1.2 wt% HCl. The results of enzymatic hydrolysis demonstrated that cellulose conversion of HCl-BMIMCl-treated at 48 h was increased by 660.05%, 538.81%, and 376.55% compared with the untreated, HCl-treated, and BMIMCl-treated rice husks, respectively. Composition analysis demonstrated that most of the hemicellulose was removed in the acid–IL combined treatment. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared analyses indicated that the crystalline structure and outer silica layer of the rice husks were efficiently broken up. The results revealed that the HCl-catalyzed dissolution is highly favorable for the industrial application of rick husks in the production of fermentable sugar and high-purity silica.

Abstract:The high silicon content in rice plant waste, specifically rice husks, makes this waste by-product attractive for the extraction and valorization of silicon oxide, which is widely used as an inert support in catalysis, drug delivery and molecular sieving. The procedures currently used for the treatment of plant biomass make extensive use of mineral acids (HCl, H2SO4, HNO3), which, besides them being potential environmental pollutants, reduce the yield and worsen the chemical-physical properties of the product. In this study, an evaluation of the easy treatment of rice husks by benchmarking different, more eco-friendly carboxylic acids in order to obtain a mesoporous SiO2 with an alveolar structure and a relatively high surface area and pore volume (300-420 m2/g, 0.37-0.46 cm3/g) is presented. The obtained mesoporous silicas are characterized by worm-like pores with a narrow size distribution and a maximum in the range of 3.4-3.5 nm. The mesoporous structure of the obtained materials was also confirmed by TEM. The complete removal of the organic part of the rice husks in the final materials was evidenced by thermogravimetric analysis. The high purity of the obtained mesoporous silica was detected using ICP analysis (98.8 wt. %). The structure peculiarities of the obtained mesoporous silicas were also characterized by solid-state NMR and ATR-FTIR spectroscopies. The morphology of the mesoporous silica was investigated by SEM.

Abstract:Recovering silica from rice husks by calcination is an economical and attractive method of manufacturing high value-added products. The pretreatment process plays an important role in the preparation of amorphous silica by influencing both the removal of metallic impurities and further decomposition of organic compounds. In this paper, the pyrolysis kinetics of various pretreatment processes, including water soaking, acid leaching and grinding, were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The contributions of various pretreatment to the production of silica can be listed as follows: acid leaching > water soaking > grinding. Acid leaching at 120 °C with an acid concentration of 8 mass% and grinding raw material into 100 mesh was most beneficial to the removal of metallic impurities and thermal decomposition of organic compounds. The Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method was employed to derive the kinetic parameters (activation energy and correlation coefficient). The activation energies were calculated to be in the range of 90–156 kJ mol −1 for rice husks with various pretreatments at different conversion fractions. These results provide useful information for the rational design and scaling up of pretreatment reactors.
Eco-friendly rice husk pre-treatment for preparing biogenic silica: Gluconic acid and citric acid comparative study

Abstract:Carboxylic acid leaching has been established eco-friendly pre-treatment method for producing biogenic silica (BSi) from rice husk. The most urgent issue is for carboxylic acid to promote new readily biodegradable acids and enhance carboxylic acid sustainability in BSi preparation. This research investigates gluconic acid (GA) applicability for biogenic silica preparation from rice husk compared with citric acid (CA). The results demonstrated that GA was preferable to CA on BSi recovery with 89.91% efficiency. Although GA leaching promoted slightly higher silica loss, the primary metal alkali impurities, such as K2O, Na2O, and Al2O3, were effectively removed at 92-93%, 89-93%, 95-97%, respectively. The combination effect of silica loss and high removal impurities resulted in lower rice husk thermal decomposition activation energy. The characteristics of BSi prepared by GA leaching were comparable with CA leaching, mainly mesoporous with 114.06 m2/g of specific surface area and 0.23 cm3/g of the pore volume. In addition, GA leaching was environmentally better than CA leaching, indicated by minor contribution to all environmental impact indices. The findings suggested that GA could be a potential replacement for prevalent carboxylic acids in BSi preparation.

Abstract:Valorization of nano-silica from sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA), a major by-product from the sugarcane processing industry, was studied using sequential alkali extraction and acid precipitation methods. Three acid pretreatments and acid precipitation, viz., HCl (NS-C), HNO 3 (NS-N), and H 2 SO 4 (NS-S), were used to optimize the process for maximum extraction of silica. In addition, alkali extraction was performed using 1 M NaOH before acid precipitation. Nano-silica recovery efficiency of 45–57% was observed for the three approaches, with NS-C exhibiting the highest recovery rate of 0.35 g/g. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) depicted irregularly shaped NS particles due to agglomeration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the presence of functionalities with characteristic peaks of Si–O-Si asymmetrical stretching and bending vibration at 1072 cm −1 and 617 cm −1 , respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated the amorphous nature of NS, with a surface area ranging from 192 (NS-N) to 473 m 2 /g (NS-C). Post-extraction showed a rise in carbon percentage and a decrease in oxygen fraction. NS-C resulted in a size of 3.96 nm and a specific surface area of 473.6 m 2 /g, which is suitable for a wide range of applications including pharmaceutical. From the life cycle assessment (LCA: ISO 14044), GWP (global warming potential) for NS-N resulted in higher CO 2 eq of 12.59 kg, followed by NS-C (12.4 CO 2 eq) and NS-S (7.51 CO 2 eq). Overall, this research was designed as a low-cost and sustainable process with minimal chemical and energy inputs, aligning with the principles of circular bio-economy.

Abstract:Silicon dioxide (SiO2) from rice husk can be extracted and be used as support for Ni‐based catalysts. The impregnation method (IM) is usually used for preparing Ni/SiO2 catalysts, but its catalytic activity in CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 remains unsatisfactory. In this work, we explored alternative preparation methods, using ammonia evaporation method (AEM) and hydrothermal method (HM) to prepare the catalysts. The results showed that the catalysts prepared by AEM and HM were significantly superior to that prepared by IM. Notably, the catalyst synthesized by AEM from sustainable silica exhibited the best performance, achieving 81.69% CO2 conversion and over 99% methane selectivity at low reaction temperature of 300 °C. The characterization techniques indicate that the Ni/SiO2‐AEM catalyst can form nickel phyllosilicate with lamellar structure, leading to better Ni dispersion and higher specific surface area. Furthermore, the results of in‐situ DRIFTS have revealed the potential catalytic mechanism over Ni/SiO2 catalysts, indicating that it involves pathways with both the CO* and HCOO* as the key intermediates.

Abstract:It is a challenge to prepare Ni-phyllosilicate catalysts deriving from the reaction of nickel salts and biomass-based silica with high Ni contents. In order to efficiently synthesize nickel phyllosilicate, the acid-treated rice husk without calcination (P-R) was directly used as the raw material. The as-synthesized Ni-phyllosilicate (N/P-R) exhibited high nickel content of 46.7 wt% owing to utilization of the abundant silanol group in the fresh rice husk. On the contrary, the Ni content of Ni-phyllosilicate sample (N/R–S) prepared using the calcinated rice husk-based silica was only 4.8 wt% because of the loss of silanol group during calcination process. As a result, N/P-R displayed much higher catalytic activity for CO 2 methanation than N/R–S. It was found that the silanol group was in favour of forming the important intermediate Si(OH) 4 , and thereby facilitated the formation of nickel phyllosilicate. In addition, the N/P-R catalyst demonstrated superior stability and excellent anti-sintering ability in the long lifetime test. In short, the proposed method in this work could not only efficiently synthesize nickel phyllosilicate with high Ni content, but also reduce energy consumption and operation steps compared to the one prepared using biomass-based silica.

Abstract:Coal ash is one of the largest industrial waste emissions in our country,how to achieve its resource-oriented utilization has important significance.Coal ash from a power plant of Heilongjiang province was firstly im-mersed in sulfuric acid to generate aluminized solution and high silicon residue.Then the carbonation method was cho-sen to prepare nano-silica aerogel with Na2 SiO3 solution as raw materials prepared by calcinating the high silicon resi-due with Na2 CO3 .The optimal conditions obtained by single factor experiment were as follows:reaction temperature was 75 ℃,ventilation rate was 1 min-1 ,reaction end was pH=8.The mass concentration of 2% PEG10000 is the best surfactant,leading to smaller particle size,more uniform distribution and smaller aggregate of SiO2 .The addition of 1% NaCl in the mass concentration can effectively improve the particle dispersion.After aging,filtering,washing, azeotropic distillation and drying,loose SiO2 particles were finally obtained whose size was 20 nm.
