Abstract:Dissolution wear determines the tool life of silicon nitride ceramics in steel machining applications. Ceramic chemical resistance against iron alloys can be evaluated by diffusion couples at temperatures approaching those found in high speed machining. The interaction kinetics of a silicon nitride ceramic against pure iron, carbon steels and chromium alloyed steels, under an argon atmosphere, was investigated. It was found that the decomposition of silicon nitride is diffusion controlled over the selected range of temperature. A transient regime related to γ/α-Fe phase transition is responsible for the observed induction times and slower reaction rates. Silicon nitride reactivity is increased by the presence of chromium in the iron due to the high affinity of this element to nitrogen, the carbon content of the steel having the opposite effect.
