Abstract:Stearic acid/expanded graphite composites with different mass ratios were prepared by absorbing liquid stearic acid into the expanded graphite. In the composite materials, the stearic acid was used as the phase change material for thermal energy storage, and the expanded graphite acted as the supporting material. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermal diffusivity measurement were used to determine the chemical structure, crystalline phase, microstructure and thermal diffusivity of the composites, respectively. The thermal properties and thermal stability were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal analysis results indicated that the materials exhibited the same phase transition characteristics as the stearic acid and their latent heats were approximately the same as the values calculated based on the weight fraction of the stearic acid in the composites. The microstructural analysis results showed that the stearic acid was well absorbed in the porous network of the expanded graphite, and there was no leakage of the stearic acid from the composites even when it was in the molten state.
Investigation on thermal energy storage characteristics of form-stable phase change materials supported by graphene aerogel

Abstract:1-hexadecanol was infiltrated into the open-cell structure of graphene aerogel (GA) to prepare a form-stable phase change material for thermal energy storage.The morphology,chemical structure and key thermophysical properties of the as-synthesized sample were characterized by FTIR, XRD,SEM,nano flash and DSC ways.The results demonstrate that the high porosity of GA can effectively prevent the liquid PCM from leakage.In addition,the extra thermal conduction pathway provided by GA enhances the thermal conductivity of pure 1-hexadecanol by 20%.After 50 heat storage/release cycles,no obvious decrease is observed in the melting and freezing enthalpies of GA/1-hexadecanol,which are 229.2 kJ/kgand 229.5 kJ/kg,respectively.Furthermore,the improved thermal conductivity endowed GA/1-hexadecanol sample with higher cooling/freezing rates during the procedure of conduction-governed heat transfer.However,during the heat transfer process dominated by natural convection,the high porosity of GA contributed to a higher capillary force,which leads to a greater flow resistance of 1-hexadecanol,thus the cooling/freezing rates of GA/1-hexadecanol are lower than the baselines of pure 1-hexacecanol.
Form-stable phase change material embedded with chitosan-derived carbon aerogel

Abstract:Chitosan, as a low-price and eco-friendly raw material, was used to synthesize a graphene-based carbon aerogel (CA). Afterwards, 1-hexadecanol was infiltrated into CA to prepare a form-stable phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage. The morphologies and thermal properties of samples were analyzed. Even at 70°C, the form-stable PCM still retains form stability without any leakage. TGA results reveal a remarkable absorption capacity of CA, which can hold up to 50 times its weight in 1-hexadecanol. A thermal conductivity enhancement of 107.9% along x-y direction of CA was achieved at the loading of nearly 2wt%, while that in z direction is less remarkable. DSC results show excellent thermal stability of the form-stable PCM with a satisfactory latent heat capacity of around 220kJ/kg.
A Pickering emulsion route to a stearic acid/graphene core–shell composite phase change material

Abstract:Stearic acid (SA) is encapsulated by a water-dispersible graphene functionalized with poly(vinyl alcohol) using an eco-friendly Pickering emulsion route to prepare a novel shape-stabilized phase change composite for thermal energy storage. In the method, the oil phase of melted SA can be easily encapsulated and stabilized by the graphene Pickering stabilizer in an aqueous medium. The subsequent solidification of the SA cores allows the formation of the shape-stabilized phase change composite microcapsules. The composite has an active phase changeable SA core for thermal energy storage via latent heat, and an ultra-thin graphene shell to prevent leakage of the SA core at liquid state during phase transition. The shape stability is achieved at a very low graphene content of around 1 wt%, giving an ultra-high content of the active SA core of up to around 99 wt% for maximizing the energy storage capacity of the composite. In addition, thermal conductivity of the composite is enhanced due to the thermally conductive graphene shell. Moreover, the graphene shell having excellent thermal stability and barrier property effectively serves as a protective layer for the SA core for improving thermal stability of the composite.

Abstract:Microencapsulated stearic acid (SA) with silicon dioxide (SiO2) shell as composite thermal energy storage material was prepared using sol–gel methods. In the composite thermal energy storage material, the stearic acid was used as the core material that is the latent heat storage phase change material (PCM), and the silicon dioxide acted as the shell material which prevented the leakage of the melted stearic acid. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) were used to determine chemical structure and microstructure of microencapsulated stearic acid with silicon dioxide shell. The thermal properties and thermal stability were investigated by the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The SEM results showed that the stearic acid was encapsulated in the shell of the silicon dioxide shell. The DSC results indicated that the microencapsulated stearic acid with the silicon dioxide shell as composite thermal energy storage material solidifies at 52.6°C with a latent heat of 162.0kJ/kg and melts at 53.5°C with a latent heat of 171.0kJ/kg when the encapsulation ratio of the SA is 90.7%. The TGA results presented that the silicon dioxide shells can improve the thermal stability of the microencapsulated stearic acid as composite thermal energy storage material.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) have garnered significant attention as a prospective solution for photothermal energy storage, attributed to their notable energy density. Nonetheless, the constrained thermal conductivity of PCMs leads to delayed heat storage from the photothermal conversion surface, causing a build-up of heat at the surface and significant heat dissipation into the surroundings. Additionally, the risk of PCM leakage poses a significant challenge to the long-term reliability of these systems. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach that synergistically utilizes expanded graphite-encapsulated phase change material (stearic acid) in conjunction with highly directional graphene films, co-assembled through hot pressing, to create laminated phase change composites with superior thermal conductivity. This innovative approach significantly enhances the thermal conductivity of the phase change composite, achieving an impressive 27.1 W/(m·K) with only 12.6 wt% of thermal filler. Remarkably, an exceptionally high thermal conductivity of 105.6 W/(m·K) can be attained with less than 26.4 wt% thermal filler. Moreover, we have introduced an advanced high-photothermal conversion layer that synergizes with our directionally conductive phase change composite. This strategic combination culminates in the creation of a highly efficient integrated photothermal storage device, markedly boosting the overall efficiency of photothermal energy integration. This innovative design offers a practical and scalable solution for high-capacity and high-intensity solar thermal energy storage.

Abstract:Graphene/ceramic composites are proposed by directly depositing graphene on the insulating Al2O3 particles by chemical vapor deposition without any metal catalysts. Carbothermic reduction occurring at the Al2O3 surface is vital during the initial stage of graphene nucleation and the graphene sheet can connect with neighboring sheets to completely cover Al2O3 particles. The quality and layer number of graphene on Al2O3 can be finely tailored by changing the growth temperature and gas ratio. Graphene coated Al2O3 (G-Al2O3) composites are used as effective fillers of stearic acid (SA) to increase the thermal transport property. By the optimization of the layer number of graphene, size of Al2O3 particles and ratio of G-Al2O3/SA in a quantitative, their thermal conductivities significantly increase up to 11 folds from 0.15 to 1.65Wm−1K−1. The great improvement is attributed to the high thermal transfer performance of graphene and excellent wettability between graphene and SA. When the G-Al2O3/SA composites with the graphene coated porous Al2O3 foam, the thermal conductivity further reaches to 2.39Wm−1K−1, and the corresponding latent heat is 38Jg−1. It demonstrates the potential applications of graphene in thermal transport and thermal energy storage devices.
Preparation of Two-Dimensional Nano Montmorillonite/stearic Acid Energy Storage Composites with Excellent Stability and Heat Storage Property

Abstract:Phase change energy storage materials have the ability to store thermal energy during the phase change process, and release the stored energy when desired. As a result, this technology has been extensively studied due to its potential in improving energy utilization and alleviating the problem of energy shortage. In this paper, twodimensional montmorillonite nanosheets (2DMts) were prepared by ultrasonic method. With 2DMts as the host and energy storage molecule stearic acid (SA) as the guest, a phase change energy storage composite material (2DMt/SA) was prepared using a self-assembly approach. The d(001) value of the 2DMt/SA composite was 4.08 nm, indicating that the layer of Mt. was completely peeled off. Additionally, the 2DMt/SA composite had a high latent heat storage capacity (192.4 J/g), which was nearly identical to that of SA samples. Compared with SA, the thermal stability of 2DMt/SA was significantly improved. After 50 cycles of heating and cooling, only 0.557% of the latent heat was lost. There was no liquid leakage indicating that the composite had an excellent structure stability. In addition, after nano silicon carbide (SiC) was added to the 2DMt/SA system, the thermal conductivity of the system increased by 113.7%. This self-assembly method solved the problem of liquid leakage and poor thermal stability in phase change materials. As a result, the 2DMt/SA composite can be applied to road asphalt materials for surface protection applications.
Synthesis and performance of oleic acid-sodium dodecyl sulfate modified graphene/styrene-acrylic emulsion nanocomposites

Abstract:Graphene (GE) was modified with oleic acid/sodium dodecyl sulfate (OA-SDS-GE), then the acrylic emulsion nanocomposites containing OA-SDS-GE were prepared via pre-emulsification and semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization, by adjusting the proportions of monomers, such as styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and acrylic acid (AA), and using ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium bicarbonate as the initiators, and the compounded emulsifiers. The structure, particle morphology and performance of the nanocomposites were studied, and the results showed that the emulsion with high solid content (42％) had better mechanical and dilution stability, the average particle size and polydispersity index (PDI) measured by PCS were 102.3 nm and 0.007, respectively. The TGA results revealed that the OA-SDS-GE/styrene-acrylic emulsion nanocomposites were thermally stable, and the 5％ and 10％thermal decomposition temperatures under N2 atmosphere were 351.0℃ and 376.2℃, respectively. The nanocomposites had a surface resistivity of 7.9×108 Ω after film formation and the film antistatic property was good.
A novel three-dimensional network-based stearic acid/graphitized carbon foam composite as high-performance shape-stabilized phase change material for thermal energy storage

Abstract:Three-dimensional porous carbon materials have received extensive attention as supports for shape-stabilized phase change materials (PCMs). In order to improve the loading capacity, thermal conductivity and encapsulation performance for PCMs, a three-dimensional graphitized carbon foam (GCF) was developed with gradient hierarchical porous surface. The GCF was successfully prepared by pyrolysis of nano-magnesium oxide/epoxy resin mixture followed by surface treatment through a carbon-thermal reaction of Fe2O3. Using the GCF prepared at 1200 °C (GCF-1200) as a support for stearic acid (SA), a novel three-dimensional network-based SA/GCF composite was achieved as shape-stabilized PCM. The results show that the GCF-1200 has a large SA loading capacity of 84.66 wt% without any liquid leakage. The prepared SA/GCF-1200 composite exhibits a good interfacial bonding between the GCF-1200 and SA without obvious phase separation in its fracture surface. The composite possesses a high compressive strength of 9.45 MPa increasing by about 3.02-fold compared with the GCF-1200, and meanwhile has a significantly improved thermal conductivity of 1.012 W/m K by 4.36 times that of pristine SA. In addition, the melting and freezing enthalpy for the composite was measured as 181.8 and 182.7 J/g, respectively, which corresponds to a thermal storage efficiency of up to 99.9%. More importantly, it presents excellent thermal reliability and chemical stability without evident changes in enthalpy after 200 thermal cycles. Therefore, the composite has a great potential for thermal energy storage applications.
Structure and thermal properties of stearic acid/silica composites as form-stable phase change materials

Abstract:In this study, stearic acid/silica phase change composites were prepared by the sol-gel method using stearic acid as phase change materials (PCMs). The effects of mass fraction of stearic acid were comprehensively investigated. The structures and thermal properties of the obtained composites were characterized by various methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), leakage tests, and thermogravimetry analysis (TG). The results indicated that composite containing 76% stearic acid had the best thermal properties and low mass leakage, making 76% stearic acid as the maximum content that silica matrix could protect in the composites. The latter was further confirmed by morphological analyses of the silica matrix. Silica matrix exhibited spherical particle clusters, following big–small–big–small size pattern as stearic acid rose. The composite with 76% stearic acid was at the key point of change in particle size. These findings look promising for future to prepare silica-based phase change composites with good thermal properties easily.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCM) have stable operation temperature and large storage capacity. However, PCM have problems of leakage and low thermal conductivity. For improving performances of PCM, stearic acid (SA) was encapsulated in silica shell by sol-gel method to form microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCM), and graphene oxide (GO) was attached to surface of silica by a self-assembly process to form GO@MPCM, so as to further improve performances of MPCM. The morphology of MPCM was observed through a scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The chemical structure and crystal phase of MPCM were measured by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Raman spectrometer was used to further verify that GO was attached to the MPCM. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) analysis confirmed that MPCM have good thermal stability. Thermal properties of MPCM were measured by Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), where melting temperature and latent heat of MPCM2 is 67.78 degrees C and 179.29 J/g. The melting temperature of GO@MPCM is similar to that of MPCM2, and the melting latent heat of GO1 @MPCM and G02@ MPCM is 146.72 J/g and 134.42 J/g, respectively. Besides, thermal conductivity of MPCM with GO is higher than that of pure SA.

Abstract:A series of shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (CPCM) were prepared, taking stearic acid (SA) as solid-liquid phase change material and activated alumina oxide (AAO) as matrix material. In comparison to other matrix materials, the superiority of AAO lies in its relatively higher thermal conductivity. And as porous oxide based PCM, pure AAO based PCM has been little reported in the existing literatures. Graphene nanoplates (GNP) were added to improve thermal conductivity of prepared samples. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the chemical structure, crystal structure and microstructure of the composite materials. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to study the latent heat and phase transition temperature. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) analyzed thermal stability of the composite materials. Thermal conductivity of the composite material was also measured. The results show that SA is adsorbed well on the AAO, and as the content of the added GNP increases, thermal conductivity of the composite material is also significantly improved. Thermal conductivity of prepared CPCM3 reaches 1.71 W/m.K, 11.4 times of that of SA.
Preparation and Properties of Stearic Acid-Acetanilide Eutectic Mixture/Expanded Graphite Composite Phase-Change Material for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:In this study, a series of binary mixtures of stearic acid (SA) and acetanilide (AA) at various mass fractions was prepared. A binary mixture of SA and AA with a ratio of 81.0: 19.0 mol% is a eutectic mixture with a melting temperature of (342.45 +/- 0.25) K and a melting latent heat of (220.04 +/- 10.02) J g(-1). To improve the thermal properties of the SA-AA eutectic mixture to obtain a composite phase-change material (CPCM) with a high thermal conductivity, large heat storage capacity, and good thermal stability and reliability for heat energy storage, expanded graphite (EG) at different mass fractions was added into the SA-AA eutectic mixture. The resulting material exhibited a remarkable energy storage capacity with a latent heat of 176.14 J g(-1). The thermal conductivity of the CPCM was enhanced by 14.5 times compared to that of the SA-AA eutectic mixture. The thermophysical properties of the SA-AA/EG CPCM after 100 accelerated thermal cycles were slightly decreased, which did not influence the heat storage. Thus, the prepared SA-AA/EG CPCM is a promising material for latent heat storage systems.

Abstract:In this study, stearic acid (SA)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) composites with different mass ratios were prepared by mixing titania powder with stearic acid-water emulsion. In the composites, the SA performed as phase change material for thermal energy storage, and TiO2 was used as supporting material. The thermal properties of the composites, such as phase change temperature and phase change latent heat, were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) analyses indicated that there was no chemical interaction during the preparation process. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) were used to survey crystalloid phase and microstructure of the SA/TiO2 composites. Besides, the thermal reliability of the composites was investigated by a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The satisfactory SA/TiO2 composite with 33% mass ratio of the SA melts at 53.84 degrees C with a latent heat of 47.82 kJ/kg and solidifies at 53.31 degrees C with a latent heat of 46.60 kJ/kg. Due to its non-inflammability, nontoxicity and good thermal stability, the composite can be used as shape-stabilized phase change materials for building thermal energy storage. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Reversible carbonation/calcination of CaCO3 is a promising technology for thermochemical energy storage in concentrated solar power plants. However, the major drawback of this technology is the rapid deactivation of CaO due to sintering. In this study, newly developed CaCO3/graphite nanosheets composites were synthesized as the heat storage medium through a one-pot route varying the graphite nanosheets load (3-12 wt%). The impregnation of the composites with H3BO3 solutions enhance the initial weightlessness temperature of graphite nanosheets from 900 degrees C to 1050 degrees C in pure CO2 atmosphere, thus upgrading the stability of graphite nanosheets during heat storage/release process. The performances of the synthesized composites were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, which simulates the heat storage cycle. The composites showed improved heat storage/output capacity and faster heat input/output rate compared to pure CaCO3. Only 3 wt% of graphite nanosheets was needed to effectively stabilize the heat storage capacity of the material. The heat storage capacity of composites with 3 wt% graphite nanosheets is 1313 kJ/kg.mposite after 50 cycles, corresponding to 2.9 times as much as that of pure CaCO3. This high stability is attributed to the unique synthetic strategy in which the CaCO3 nanoparticles uniformly coated on graphite nanosheets surface, and their sintering and aggregation were prevented. This work brings the development of this technology to a level closer to its industrial application.

In this work, we successfully fabricated interconnected carbon aerogels with superior mechanical performance from graphene oxide (GO), thermally conductive hexagonal boron nitride (BN), and green biomass guar gum (GG). The GG with long soft molecular chains stabilized the porous structures of the carbon aerogels through hydrogen bonding. GG also maintained the even dispersion of BN in the carbon skeleton, forming a connected thermal conductive network. Furthermore, the stearic acid (SA)-capric acid (CA) binary eutectic PCMs were successfully capsulated in the porous structures of the obtained GG/GO/BN carbon aerogels to fabricate composite PCMs with high thermal conductivity and good shape stability, which overcoming the limitations of single PCMs and expanding their thermal energy storage applications. The composite PCMs exhibited an excellent energy storage capacity of 161.63 J/g with almost no change after 100 thermal cycles. In addition, the thermal conductivity of the composite PCMs increased to 0.6061 W∙m −1 ∙K −1 , which was nearly three times that of SA-CA, and the photothermal conversion efficiency of the composite PCMs reached 92.56 %.

Abstract:Fatty acid and fatty acid blend phase change materials (PCM) have issues with easy leakage and low thermal conductivity in thermal storage and exothermic processes. To overcome this issue, a novel low-temperature composite material, Lauric acid - stearic acid - fumed silica - expanded graphite (LA-SA-FS-EG), was fabricated by vacuum impregnation technique using lauric acid-stearic acid (LA-SA) as the phase change material (PCM), fumed silica (FS) as the support material, and expanded graphite (EG) as the thermal conductive material . Leakage tests indicated that the maximum adsorption of LA-SA by fumed silica was 75 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the microscopic morphology of the composites. The crystal structure and chemical composition of the composites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) data indicates that the melting temperatures of LA-SA-FS-EG 3 %, 5 % and 7 % were 33.38 °C, 33.32 °C and 33.13 °C respectively, with melting latent heats of 110.8 J/g, 114.3 J/g and 119.9 J/g, respectively. The thermal conductivity of LA-SA-FS-EG 7 % is improved by 454 % compared to the LA-SA-FS composite without the addition of EG. LA-SA-FS-EG7% composite showed excellent heat storage capacity. LA-SA-FS-EG7% has a 46.1 % increase in heat storage rate and a 59.4 % increase in thermal release rate compared to LA-SA-FS composite. Notably, the LA-SA-FS-EG7% composite retains good thermal properties even after 1000 heating and cooling cycles. Consequently, the LA-SA-FS-EG7% composites produced have potential applications in thermal energy storage and building energy efficiency.

Abstract:Thermal storage cement-based materials, formed by integrating phase change materials into cementitious materials, exhibit significant potential as energy storage materials. However, poor thermal conductivity severely limits the development and application of these materials. In this study, an amorphous SiO2 shell is encapsulated on a graphite surface to create a novel thermally modified admixture (C@SiO2). This material exhibits excellent thermal conductivity, and the surface-encapsulated amorphous SiO2 enhances its bond with cement. Further, C@SiO2 was added to the thermal storage cement-based materials at different volume ratios. The effects of C@SiO2 were evaluated by measuring the fluidity, thermal conductivity, phase change properties, temperature change, and compressive strength of various thermal storage cement-based materials. The results indicate that the newly designed thermal storage cement-based material with 10 vol% C@SiO2 increases the thermal conductivity coefficient by 63.6% and the latent heat of phase transition by 11.2% compared to common thermal storage cement-based materials. Moreover, C@SiO2 does not significantly impact the fluidity and compressive strength of the thermal storage cement-based material. This study suggests that C@SiO2 is a promising additive for enhancing thermal conductivity in thermal storage cement-based materials. The newly designed thermal storage cement-based material with 10 vol% C@SiO2 is a promising candidate for energy storage applications.
