Abstract:Chitosan, as a low-price and eco-friendly raw material, was used to synthesize a graphene-based carbon aerogel (CA). Afterwards, 1-hexadecanol was infiltrated into CA to prepare a form-stable phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage. The morphologies and thermal properties of samples were analyzed. Even at 70°C, the form-stable PCM still retains form stability without any leakage. TGA results reveal a remarkable absorption capacity of CA, which can hold up to 50 times its weight in 1-hexadecanol. A thermal conductivity enhancement of 107.9% along x-y direction of CA was achieved at the loading of nearly 2wt%, while that in z direction is less remarkable. DSC results show excellent thermal stability of the form-stable PCM with a satisfactory latent heat capacity of around 220kJ/kg.

Abstract:Microencapsulated phase change material(MPCM) were prepared by using solid paraffin as core and melamine-urea-formaldehyde condensation resin as shell through in-situ polymerization.Problems such as low thermal conductivity and hydrophilicity were studied.The thermal conductivity of core and surface performance were modified by using graphite and nano-SiO2.The surface morphology,structure,thermal properties were measured and characterized by optical microscopy(OM),infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The results showed that:thermal storage can maintain original characteristics of phase change enthalpy 47.5J / g after paraffin microencapsulated.The mean diameter of microcapsule was 45μm with rough surface.Encapsulation efficiency of paraffin was up to 80%.After nano-SiO2 modification,hydrophilicity,thermal properties and mechanical strength have been enhanced and thermal conductivity have been increased after graphite modified.

Abstract:Phase change energy storage materials are widely used in thermal management because they reduce energy consumption and effectively address issues such as energy supply and demand mismatches. However, challenges such as leakage in solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs), flammability in organic solid-liquid PCMs, and supercooling and phase separation in inorganic solid-liquid PCMs still need to be resolved for their practical applications. In this study, we used methyl palmitate, dodecahydrate disodium hydrogen phosphate, and decahydrate sodium carbonate as the main PCMs, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as an emulsifier and thickener, and silica aerogel as the encapsulating material to successfully prepare a novel shape-stabilized organic/inorganic composite PCM (CPCM). The prepared CPCM exhibits excellent shape stability and flame retardancy without supercooling or phase separation issues. In addition, the prepared CPCM has a high latent heat value (174.1 J/g) and a suitable phase transition temperature (22.9 °C), and its thermal performance remains basically unchanged after 100 heating/cooling cycles. Furthermore, this CPCM also demonstrates exceptional performance in building thermal management. This study provides a new solution to the problems of flammability, supercooling, phase separation and easy leakage of CPCM currently used in the field of building thermal management.

Abstract:Hydrophobic modified silica/exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets aerogel (M-SiO2/xGnP) were successfully prepared via surface modification of silica/xGnP alcogel and followed by ambient pressure drying. Afterwards, form-stable PCMs in which capric–palmitic acids eutectic (CA–PA) was confined in the prepared aerogels were obtained by vacuum infiltration. Characterization of the prepared form-stable PCMs revealed that both the hydrophobic modification and the doping of xGnP could effectively improve the loading of CA–PA in the aerogel. The unmodified silica aerogel could not adsorb CA–PA, while the loading of CA–PA in the surface modified pure silica aerogel supported form-stable PCM and the unmodified silica/xGnP aerogel supported form-stable PCM were 24.2wt% and 44.4wt%, respectively. Besides, the hydrophobic modification and the doping of xGnP showed significant synergistic effect. The loading of CA–PA in the M-SiO2/xGnP supported form-stable PCM (FPCM/xGnP-20-48) could attain 78.9wt% when the M-SiO2/xGnP was obtained by modifying the alcogel with 20vol% trimethyl chlorosilane for 48h. The FPCM/xGnP-20-48 not only had high latent heat and good thermal reliability, but also exhibited significantly improved thermal conductivity and alleviated supercooling due to the effective thermal conductive network formed by xGnP and the promoted heterogeneous nucleation of CA–PA at interfaces with aerogel.

Abstract:Phase-change energy storage materials have been widely applied in thermal management because of their ability to effectively address issues such as mismatched energy supply and demand. However, challenges such as the leakage of phase change materials and the poor mechanical properties of their corresponding supporting frameworks can reduce the energy storage capacity of composite phase change materials. These challenges pose obstacles to the practical application of such materials. This study successfully produced a composite phase-change aerogel material by using n-octadecane and a poly(vinyl alcohol) aerogel with borax cross-links. The prepared composite phase-change material exhibited excellent shape stability, high thermal stability, and high phase change enthalpy. The mechanical properties of the composite phase-change material were considerably enhanced by borax cross-linking and the adsorption of the phase change materials. Furthermore, the composite material demonstrated an outstanding thermal management performance at low temperatures. These findings provide a direction for the development of innovative composite phase-change aerogel materials.

Abstract:To meet the national demand for energy conservation and emission reduction, a shape-stable CaCl2·6H2O /silica aerogel composite phase change material (CPCM) for building energy storage was successfully developed. The CPCM was formed by using modified CaCl2·6H2O composed of CaCl2·6H2O (main PCM) and SrCl2·6H2O (nucleating agent) as PCM, and silica aerogel as carrier via physical blending method. The structure and properties of the CPCM were investigated by various techniques. The results showed that compositing of modified CaCl2·6H2O with silica aerogel could significantly reduce the thermal conductivity, effectively prevent leakage as well as lessen supercooling. The obtained CPCM with 75 wt% modified CaCl2·6H2O had suitable phase transition temperature (27.0 °C) with high latent heat (110.9 J·g−1), acceptable supercooling degree (1.6 °C), low thermal conductivity (0.1954 W/(m·K)) as well as excellent thermal reliability. The results obtained make the CPCM in this work promising for use in building thermal insulation materials.

Abstract:The integration of photo-thermal conversion and thermal energy storage is an efficient way to improve the solar energy utilization. Phase change material (PCM) with excellent thermal storage ability is often used in solar energy storage systems. However, PCMs suffer from liquid leakage, low thermal conductivity and insensitivity to light. This work used sol-gel and high-temperature calcination to modify the carbonized-wood (CW) by alumina nanoparticles loaded in the pores to improve the above issues. The combined microscopic and macroscopic test results showed that the modified carbonized-wood provided a good support structure for the paraffin wax (PW) to prepared carbonized-wood based composite phase change materials (CCPCMs). The CCPCMs exhibit noticeable hydrophobicity as well. The thermophysical properties of the CCPCMs were tested and the results showed that the CCPCMs possessed excellent encapsulation rate (85.98 %–91.65 %), enthalpy of phase transition (166.3–176.6 J/g), and good thermal reliability. By high-temperature carbonization and loading of alumina nanoparticles, the photo-thermal conversion efficiency of CCPCMs was optimized to 95.13 % and the surface overheating was weakened. In the simulation experiment of glass chamber, CCPCMs can store heat while maintaining the uniformity of the chamber's temperature. In conclusion, the novel CCPCMs developed in this work are highly promising in the field of solar thermal utilization and storage.

Abstract:Latent heat storage employing metals as solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs) has been a research hotspot in the area of high temperature energy storage. However, the major obstacles owing to the leakage and corrosion issues in the process of high-temperature phase change, the application of metallic PCM has been considerably restricted. In this study, Al-25Si alloy was used as PCM while Al2O3 nanoparticles were used as matrix material to prepare the phase change composite (PCC). Firstly, the mixed raw materials were pretreated in boiling water, which was subsequently shaped to tablets by pressing and finally heat treated at high temperature under O2 atmosphere. At a weight ratio of 50 wt% for Al-25Si in the mixture, the as-prepared PCCs were perfectly encapsulated and showed good thermal cycling stability, which could prevent leakage during the long time repeated heating and cooling. The PCC presented a melting temperature of around 577 °C and a heat storage enthalpy of around 85.4 J/g. The as-prepared composite with good thermal performance could find a wide application in high-temperature heat storage.

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous silica (MS) was prepared through a simple self‐assembly procedure under alkaline condition with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as SiO 2 precursor and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. A series of shape‐stabilized composite phase change materials (ss‐CPCMs), using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000) as the PCM and MS as the matrix with different mass percentage of PEG6000 loadings, was prepared through a vacuum impregnation method. N 2 adsorption‐desorption analyzer measurement showed the specific surface area and average pore size of the as‐prepared porous silica were determined to be 760 m 2 /g and about 3 nm, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements indicated that the melting peak temperatures and latent heats of melting of the composites are varied from 52.3°C to 62.6°C and 32.9 to 186.4 J/g (PEG6000 mass fractions: 0%‐80%), which was proportional to PEG6000 content. Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy results implied that only the physical interaction existed between the PEG6000 and SiO 2 matrix. The shape‐stability measurements suggested the composite with the 70% mass loading of PEG6000 can still maintained the original shape and no leakage were observed above the much higher melting temperature of PEG6000 (105°C). Thermal cycling test showed that the ss‐CPCM had good thermal reliability and chemical stability although it was experienced 500 melting and cooling cycles. Moreover, the thermal decomposition temperature of the composites (393.2°C) was much larger than the melting temperature of pure PEG6000 (62.6°C), which indicated that composite presented excellent thermal stabilities and was suitable for thermal energy storage applications.

Abstract:In this study, a green, non-toxic, and renewable starch was selected to construct a three-dimensional (3D) biomass-derived aerogel to prepare a series of shape stable phase change composites (SSPCCs) by encapsulating organic phase change materials (PCMs), and the best encapsulation effect of SF-50 with ultralow density (0.0635 g/cm −3 ) and high continuous porosity on polyethylene glycol (PEG) was found to be 91.78 wt% by comparing myristic acid (MA) and paraffin wax (PW). Moreover, the introduction of MXene, a functional two-dimensional filler in the aerogel skeleton, not only endows the SSPCCs with better light absorption ability, but also enhances the encapsulation ability of PEG. The adsorption rate of SF-Mxene-8 on PEG is 93.27 wt% and the enthalpy is 164.92 J/g. In addition, its photothermal conversion rate is 76.9 % and it still has stable solar energy absorption and thermal energy release ability after 200 photothermal conversions. The starch based aerogel in general will bring a new paradigm for PCM as a working medium for solar-thermal energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:The utilization of paraffin in latent heat storage system is limited by its leakage and low thermal conductivity. To address such challenges, we prepare composite phase change materials (PCMs) with enhanced thermal conductivity and shape stability. Paraffin is supported by porous Al2O3 which is synthesized by solution combustion synthesis (SCS). The porous structure of Al2O3 is quite influenced by the fuel species in SCS reactions. The glycine-induced Al2O3 shows highly hierarchical porous structure, which can improve the anti-leakage performance of the composites. The thermal conductivity of Al2O3/PW reaches 1.27 W/m•K with an Al2O3 mass ratio of 50 wt%, which is 5 times of pure paraffin. The composite also presents acceptable latent heat capacity of higher than 100 J/g and very good thermal cycling stability. These characteristics assure the promising application of Al2O3/PW composites for thermal energy storage.

Abstract:In this work, shape–stabilized octadecane and silica microcapsules were prepared by using sol–gel method. In the microcapsules, the octadecane was used as phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage, and the silica prepared from methyl triethoxysilane (MTES) acted as shell material to prevent the octadecane from leakage. The thermal properties of the microcapsules were measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The microstructure and particle size of the microcapsules were surveyed by scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT–IR) and X–ray diffractometer (XRD) were used to investigate the chemical structure, crystalloid phase of the microcapsules. The DSC results showed that the satisfactory microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) sample melts at 28.32°C with a latent heat of 227.66kJ/kg and solidifies at 26.22°C with a latent heat of 226.26kJ/kg. The thermal reliability of the microcapsules was analyzed by a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results indicated that the MPCMs have good thermal stability, which could be used as shape–stabilized phase change materials for thermal energy storage.

Abstract:The shape-stabilized paraffin/silicon dioxide (SiO2) composite phase change materials (PCM) were prepared by using sol–gel methods. Paraffin was used as the PCM, and silicon dioxide was acted as the supporting material. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and scanning electronic microscope were used to determine the FT-IR spectra and microstructure of shape-stabilized paraffin/silicon dioxide composite PCM, respectively. The thermal properties and thermal stability were investigated by a differential scanning calorimeter and a thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The SEM analysis showed that the paraffin was well dispersed into the porous network of silicon dioxide. DSC analysis indicated that the mass content of paraffin in silicon dioxide was up to 92.1%, and paraffin/silicon dioxide composites had solidifying temperature of 57.07 °C, solidifying latent heat of 59.66 kJ/kg, melting temperature of 58.10 °C, and melting latent heat of 139.59 kJ/kg.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) have shown great application potential in sustainable energy utilization. The green preparation and efficient application are both focus of PCMs in research. In this paper, without any carbonized process under high temperature, bio-based sodium alginate (SA) and different content of ZrP nanosheets modified by PDA were used to prepare intrinsic framework materials (SA@ZrP) with sensitive lighting absorbance. Polyethylene glycol (PEG)/SA@ZrP with shape stability was fabricated via the vacuum impregnation method. Among them, CPCM5 (SA:PDA@ZrP = 50:50) exhibited excellent thermal storage and cycling stability. Compared with CPCM0 (SA:PDA@ZrP = 100:0), the melting enthalpy (159.8 J/g) and freezing enthalpy (159.3 J/g) of CPCM5 increased 16.8% and 15.4%, respectively. After 100 thermal cycles, there was no significant difference in the latent heat during meting (159.02 J/g) and freezing (157.36 J/g) process. Superior light-thermal performance of CPCM5 also performed during photothermal conversion. Therefore, with the environmentally friendly and low-cost prepared process while excellent thermal properties, PEG/SA@ZrP shows widen application prospects in the photothermal storage and conversion field.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Inspired by the common preparation method of mesoporous silica where polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as template to obtain porous silica, PEG/silica ([email protected]2) composite as shape-stabilized phase change material for energy storage was well prepared. In this paper, PEG was used as phase change material (PCM) to store and release thermal energy and SiO2 acted as the supporting matrix. Various techniques were employed to characterize the structural and thermal properties of [email protected]2. The results indicate that PEG was encapsulated in SiO2 shell with physical interactions. The phase change enthalpy of [email protected]2 is 164.9 J/g in the melting process and 160.1 J/g in the solidifying process with the mass fraction of 97 wt%. It is a considerably exciting result as the value is so close to pristine PEG's (178.6 J/g). [email protected]2 exhibited excellent thermal reliability based on the results of undergoing the heating-cooling cycle 100 times. Also, [email protected]2 had a good thermal stability within its working temperature range. This study provides a general approach for increasing the loading of PCMs in porous materials and thus the energy storage capability.

Abstract:Phase change materials offer enormous potential for thermal energy storage due to their high latent heat and chemical stability. Researchers have developed numerous innovative strategies to overcome the leakage of organic phase change materials and enhance thermal performance. However, the manufacture of form-stable, free-standing energy storage films based on phase change materials with high latent heat remains difficult. Therefore, the present study focused on the production of free-standing, form-stable energy storage films with high phase-change enthalpy and thermally stimulant multiresponsiveness from the simple composite of paraffin with a polytetrafluoroethylene/silica (PTFE/SiO2) aerogel framework, where paraffin was effectively confined in PTFE/SiO2. The resulting paraffin/PTFE/SiO2 films exhibited a large phase change enthalpy (128 J/g) at a paraffin content of 62.8 wt %. The temperature-dependent wettability, transmittance, and mechanical properties of this composite film have also been investigated.

Abstract:A novel Na2SO4@SiO2@Al2O3-SiO2 phase change material doped aerogel composite (PDAC) using the sol-gel technique is prepared. This new kind of composite material is composed of a core-shell structured Na2SO4@SiO2 phase change material (PCM) with high melting temperature and Al2O3-SiO2 aerogel with high thermal resistance and low thermal conductivity. The effects of PCM amounts and heat treatment temperatures on the physicochemical properties of Na2SO4@SiO2@Al2O3-SiO2 PDCA are investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that when the mass percentage of Na2SO4@SiO2 PCM powders increases to 36.7%, the peaks corresponding to Na2SO4 can be well observed. The boehmite phase within Na2SO4@SiO2@Al2O3-SiO2 PDAC can be transformed to gamma-Al2O3 via structural adjustment after heat treatment at 600 *degrees C. The pore size distribution doesn't shift after 600*degrees C heat treatment, and the most probable pore diameter is at around 30 nm. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) shows that the Na2SO4@SiO2 PCM powders with diameters at around 500 nm can be effectively trapped and are homogeneously distributed within the aerogel matrix even after further heat treatment at 1000*degrees C, therefore, liquid leakage can be inhibited during melting process. The peak latent heat of Na2SO4@SiO2@Al2O3-SiO2 PDCA can be as high as 153.84 J/g with the PCM mass percentage at 36.7%. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area increases from 419.3 m(2)/g to 630.6 m(2)/g due to structural adjustment, and then decreases to 277.7 m(2)/g caused by volume shrinkage. Thermal simulation results show that the total melting time can be 254.8 s, and development of the temperature distribution keeps well with that of the liquid fraction. The velocity distribution of the liquid PCM keeps at 0 due to the constraint of aerogel matrix. This Na2SO4@SiO2@Al2O3-SiO2 PDAC can be a promising high temperature PCM in thermal energy storage applications.
Biomass derived carbon aerogel as an ultrastable skeleton of form-stable phase change materials for efficient thermal energy storage

Abstract:Abstract Direct conversion of biomass to carbon aerogel provides a promising approach to developing supporting material for phase change materials (PCMs). In present work, carrot and pumpkin derived carbon aerogels (CCA and PCA) were fabricated via a hydrothermal and post-sintering process. N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms were used to evaluate the specific surface area and pore distribution of the carbon aerogels. It showed that the carrot carbon aerogel sintered at 800 °C (CCA800) possessed a specific surface area of 33.80 m 2 ·g −1 , which is separately 168%, 165%, and 287% higher than that of carrot carbon aerogel sintered at 1000 °C (CCA1000, 12.59 m 2 ·g −1 ), pumpkin carbon aerogel sintered at 800 °C (PCA800, 12.77 m 2 ·g −1 ), and pumpkin carbon aerogel sintered at 1000 °C (PCA1000, 8.74 m 2 ·g −1 ). Owing to its porosity, the carbon aerogels with a high loading content of palmitic acid (PA)/thiol-ene resin (TE) composite as a PCM without leakage. A thermal conductivity enhancement of 60.5% was achieved by 50PA/TE@PCA1000 compared with 50PA/TE, and DSC result showed its latent heat of 88.26 J/g. The excellent properties of PCMs composites lead to a promising application foreground.

Abstract:<p>A novel form-stable phase change material (FSPCM) based on ionic liquid/aluminum nitride/copolyamide composite were fabricated from electrospinning approach. The ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (IL) was chosen as phase change materials while nano aluminum nitride (AlN) and copolyamide 6/12 (CoPA) were chesen as additive and supporting matrix, respectively. The surface morphology and heat storage property had been systematically investigated by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively. Results showed that the diameter of the phase change fibers are 0.92–1.07 μm and was influenced by the IL and AlN content. With 57 wt% of IL and 5 wt% of AlN, the composite fiber achieved a fusion enthalpy of 86.4 J/g and the thermal conductivity was increased by 165.2% compared to that of IL/CoPA. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and thermal cycle test also indicated a good thermal stability and reusability of the composite fiber. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that new hydrogen bonds between IL and CoPA were formed in the composite and showed a significant effect on the thermal performance of the composite fibers. The electrospun composite fiber based on ionic liquids can be applied as form-stable phase change material in thermal energy storage and temperature regulation.</p>

Abstract:Thermal energy storage (TES) is vital to the absorption and release of plenty of external heat for various applications. For such storage, phase change material (PCM) has been considered as a sustainable energy material that can be integrated into a power generator. However, pure PCM has a leakage problem during the phase transition process, and we should fabricate a form stable PCM composite using some supporting materials. To prevent the leakage problem during the phase transition process, two different methods, microencapsulation and 3D porous infiltration, were used to fabricate PCM composites in this work. It was found that both microsphere and 3D porous aerogel supported PCM composites maintained their initial solid state without any leakage during the melting process. Compared with the microencapsulated PCM composite, the 3D porous aerogel supported PCM exhibited a relatively high weight fraction of working material due to its high porosity. In addition, the cross-linked graphene aerogel (GCA) could reduce volume shrinkage effectively during the infiltration process, and the GCA supported PCM composite kept a high latent heat (∆H) and form stability.
