Abstract:The synergistic inhibition effect of rosmarinus officinalis and ricinus communis on the electrochemical characteristics and corrosion resistance of P4 low-carbon mold steel and high-carbon steel in 1 M H2SO4 and HCl solution was analysed with potentiodynamic polarization technique, weight-loss method and optical microscopy. The admixed organic derivatives inhibited both types of steels with optimal inhibition efficiencies of 86.93 and 96.22% for the low-carbon mold steel, and 91 and 84.71% for the high-carbon steel in H2SO4 and HCl solutions, respectively, from the potentiodynamic polarization test due to the effective inhibiting action of the protonated inhibitor molecules in the acid solutions. Corrosion rate results at 0% inhibitor concentration prove the low-carbon mold steel to be relatively more resistant to corrosion despite the contrary from inhibition efficiency values in H2SO4 media due to the passivation characteristics of the mold steel. Corrosion thermodynamic results showed chemisorption adsorption mechanism of the inhibitor molecules onto the surface of both steels according to Langmuir adsorption isotherm with correlation coefficient values above 0.9. Microanalytical observations of the inhibited steel morphologies significantly contrast the unprotected steel due to visible surface deterioration and presence of micro/macropits on the corroded samples. The organic inhibitor derivatives showed mixed-type inhibition for both steels in H2SO4 and cathodic-type inhibition in HCl.
