Abstract:The corrosion inhibition performance of pyridine derivatives (4-methylpyridine and its quaternary ammonium salts) and sulfur-containing compounds (thiourea and mercaptoethanol) with different molar ratios on carbon steel in CO2-saturated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The synergistic corrosion inhibition mechanism of mixed inhibitors was elucidated by the theoretical calculation and simulation. The molecules of pyridine derivative compounds with a larger volume has priority to adsorb on the metal surface, while the molecules of sulfur-containing compounds with a smaller volume fill in vacancies. A dense adsorption film would be formed when 4-PQ and sulfur-containing compounds are added at a proper mole ratio.

Abstract:This study employed 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide to mitigate the corrosion of Q235 steel in a hydrochloric acid environment. The evaluation of corrosion inhibition effectiveness was comprehensively characterized by combining electrochemical experiments with surface morphology observation. The experimental results demonstrated the capability of the ionic liquid in establishing a film layer on the surface of Q235 steel, which effectively hindered the charge transfer process. Notably, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attained a value of 92.3% at a concentration of 1mM corrosion inhibitor. Moreover, the process of the corrosion inhibitor adhering to the steel surface aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, demonstrating physicochemical adsorption behavior. The density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were utilized for further exploration of the corrosion inhibition mechanism, and the results indicate the ionic liquid can be adsorbed onto the (110) surface of Fe in parallel through N atoms on the imidazole ring.

Abstract:The corrosion inhibition of C-steel by two s-triazine/morpholino-anilino-pyrazole derivatives, namely, 4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-morpholino-N-phenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-amine (1) and N-(4-bromophenyl)-4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-morpholino-1,3,5-triazin-2-amine (2) was investigated by impedimetric and potentiometric studies. It was found that (1) and (2) acted as cathodic-type corrosion inhibitors that retard the hydrogen evolution reaction. The percent corrosion inhibition, 98.5% for compound (2) (with bromo substituent) at 80 ppm, was slightly higher than 97.8% for (1) at 100 ppm. Thus, the replacement of a -H with -Br substituent increased the corrosion inhibition properties. Compound (2) exhibited Temkin isotherm adsorption, whereas compound (1) exhibited Langmuir adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the steel surface indicated that the inhibitors caused protection of the surface. The weight loss experiment also proved the decrease in the corrosion rate when inhibitors were added. The difference in inhibitory efficiency between compounds (1) and (2) was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) to study neutral and protonated species in gaseous and aqueous phases. The theoretical analysis demonstrated that compound (2) exhibited higher inhibitory activity on a metal surface compared to compound (1), aligning with the experimental results. The energy associated with the metal/adsorbate arrangement, represented by dE ads/dNi , was higher for (2) (-380.91 kcal mol-1) compared to (1) (-371.64 kcal mol-1). This indicated better adsorption of (2) over (1).

Abstract:In this study, synthesis and assessment of the corrosion inhibition of four new binary heterocyclic pyrimidinones on CS in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solutions at various temperatures (30–50 °C) were investigated. The synthesized molecules were designed and synthesized through Suzuki coupling reaction, the products were identified as 5-((5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)pyrimidine-2,4,6(1 H ,3 H ,5 H )-trione ( HM-1221 ), 2-thioxo-5-((5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)dihydropyrimidine-4,6(1 H ,5 H )-dione ( HM-1222 ), 1,3-diethyl-2-thioxo-5-((5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)dihydropyrimidine-4,6(1 H ,5 H )-dione ( HM-1223 ) and 1,3-dimethyl-5-((5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)pyrimidine-2,4,6(1 H ,3 H ,5 H )-trione ( HM-1224 ). The experiments include weight loss measurements (WL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). From the measurements, it can be shown that the inhibition efficiency ( η ) of these organic derivatives increases with increasing the doses of inhibitors. The highest η recorded from EIS technique were 89.3%, 90.0%, 92.9% and 89.7% at a concentration of 11 × 10 −6 M and 298 K for HM-1221 , HM-1222 , HM-1223 , and HM-1224 , respectively. The adsorption of the considered derivatives fit to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Since the Δ G o ads values were found to be between − 20.1 and − 26.1 kJ mol −1 , the analyzed isotherm plots demonstrated that the adsorption process for these derivatives on CS surface is a mixed-type inhibitors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscope (AFM) and Fourier- transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were utilized to study the surface morphology, whereby, quantum chemical analysis can support the mechanism of inhibition. DFT data and experimental findings were found in consistent agreement.

Abstract:The corrosion inhibition behaviors of dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC), hexadecylpyridinium chloride monohydrate (HDPC), and the rosin amino acid surfactants dehydroabietic acylamino sodium (6-DAS) and compounds (6-DAS/DPC and 6-DAS/HDPC) were investigated by weight loss measurements and electrochemical testing. Besides, corrosion inhibition performance was further verified by combining a series of surface properties analyses and theoretical calculations. The weight loss results showed that the increase in inhibition efficiency was mainly attributed to its high concentration and revealed that the inhibition efficiency of compound inhibitors was higher than that of single inhibitor 6-DAS (92.23%), which was up to 95.86% and 96.72% of 6-DAS/DPC and 6-DAS/HDPC at 1:8 concentration ratio, respectively. The potential polarization curve potential demonstrated that single inhibitor 6-DAS and compound inhibitors (6-DAS/DPC and 6-DAS/HDPC) were both mixed-type corrosion inhibitors dominated by the anode. Thus, among the three, 6-DAS/HDPC had the best corrosion inhibition performance, and the average inhibition efficiency was 96.90%. Surface studies presented the adsorption of inhibitor molecules adhered on the Fe surface, while the adsorption performance of compound inhibitors appeared to be superior to single inhibitor 6-DAS. Moreover, it was found that there were a few excellent data from molecular dynamics simulation about the adsorption energies of inhibitors that could also explain the corrosion inhibitor performance, the results of which had good agreement with the experimental data, which provided strong evidence for the close relationship between the molecular structure of inhibitor and its inhibition efficiency.

Abstract:CO 2 -containing environments commonly cause corrosion of carbon steel (CS) pipelines used in the oil and gas industry. In this work, the inhibition of corrosion by three derivatives of pyrimidine, namely 2-mercaptopyrimidine (MPY), 4-hydroxy-2-mercapto-6-methylpyrimidine (HMMP), and 4,5-Diamino-2,6-dimercaptopyrimidine (DDMP) for C1018 CS in CO 2 saturated 3.5% NaCl brine was investigated. The corrosion rates and inhibition efficiency were investigated at 25 and 70 °C using open circuit potential, linear polarization resistance, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements. The post-immersion surface characterization of the exposed C1018 CS with and without the three molecules was carried out using SEM and 3D surface optical profilometer. Theoretical computation using DFT was further utilized to examine the role of the molecular structures and the mechanism of inhibition of the three molecules on steel surface at the atomic level. The experimental results indicate the following order of inhibition efficiency: MPY > DDMP > HMMP. Our experimental work proved that MPY molecule (the smaller one with the least number of heteroatoms) as the most efficient corrosion inhibitor. Surface characterization analysis confirmed the order of inhibition efficiency. The theoretical results revealed that the stability of molecules adsorbed on Fe (110) surface in the parallel orientation and on FeCO 3 (104) is identical on both surfaces, which is completely consistent with the experiment. Our study provides a feasible strategy for developing new corrosion inhibitors by understanding how similar organic inhibitors work.

Abstract:The synergistic mechanism and the synergistic effect of oleic imidazoline (OIM) and L-cysteine (CYS) as carbon steel corrosion inhibitors were studied by experimental and theoretical methods in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution saturated by CO2 at 60 degrees C. The results of the weight-loss and the electrochemistry experiment show that the inhibition performance of the mixture corrosion inhibitors is better than that of the individual inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency of the mixture corrosion inhibitors is high up to 95.08 % when the ratio of OIM and CYS is 3 to 1. The quantum chemical parameters calculated at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level show that OIM can be preferentially adsorbed. The molecular dynamic simulation results also indicate that OIM is preferentially adsorbed onto the surface of the carbon steel. The adsorbed OIM molecules form a film with voids and CYS molecules fill in the voids forming a bilayer film. The bilayer film becomes the most condensed and the thickest when the proportion of OIM and CYS is 3 to 1 in both aqueous solution and NaCl solution saturated by CO2. So the synergistic inhibition mechanism of OIM and CYS is a bilayer adsorption mechanism. The smallest diffusion coefficient of the corrosive particle Cl- is 0.2294 when the ratio of OIM and CYS is 3 to 1. Therefore, the film can effectively prevent the carbon steel from corrosion. As a result, the mixture corrosion inhibitors of OIM and CYS with the ration of 3 to 1 present the best synergistic effect. The results can provide a helpful guideline for further studying the synergistic inhibition effect of the mixture inhibitors of OIM and other chemicals.

Abstract:The synergistic effect and synergistic mechanism of quinoline quaternary ammonium salt (QQAS) and L-methionine (L-Met) as Q235 carbon steel corrosion inhibitors in 1.0 M HCl solution were studied by weight-loss and electrochemistry and theoretical methods at 60°C. Both the weight-loss and the electrochemistry experiment results show that there is obvious synergistic effect with a synergistic index of 8.81 between QQAS and L-Met. The results of the electrochemical experiments show that the inhibition efficiency of the mixture corrosion inhibitor reaches 98.46% when the concentration of the mixture inhibitor is 50 mg/L with the molar ratio of QQAS and L-Met of 3 to 1. The quantum chemical parameters calculated at B3LYP/6-311++G** level indicate that QQAS can be preferentially adsorbed for its stronger offer electron ability. The results of molecular dynamics studies show that QQAS is preferentially adsorbed onto the surface of carbon steel forming the framework of the corrosion inhibitor film. And L-Met molecules fills the gap to make the film more condensed. The adsorption energy and the density distribution of the inhibitor and water molecules indicate that the corrosion inhibition performance is the best when the molar ratio of QQAS and L-Met is 3:1. And the synergistic inhibition mechanism is the monolayer adsorption mechanism. These results can provide useful guidance for further study on the synergistic corrosion inhibition effects of QQAS and other compounds.

Abstract:In this paper, a new pyrazole derivative, namely, (2-(((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)amino)-5-nitrophenyl)(phenyl) methanone (2-DPM) was uniquely used as an inhibitor of corrosion for carbon steel (C-S) in acidic solution (1 M HCl). Numerous techniques include electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), surface morphology analysis (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), atom force microscopy (AFM), angle of contact, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-visible analysis. Molecular dynamic simulations (MDs) and quantum chemical computations (DFT) were utilized to assess the 2-DPM ability. The results show that the inhibitor, acting in a mixed inhibitory mode, considerably reduces the incidence of C-S corrosion by protecting the metal surface with an effective protective layer. The chemically adsorbed novel pyrazole (2-DPM) molecule has an improved corrosion performance of nearly 96% at 303 K, which is supported by EIS and theoretical analyses. The Langmuir isotherm model was shown to regulate the adsorption of 2-DPM on the surface of C-S. Finally, there is a strong correlation between theoretical research and experimental findings.

Abstract:The corrosion inhibitory potency of two new pyrimidine-pyrazole derivatives, namely N-((3,5-dimethyl-1 H-pyrazol-1-yl) methyl) pyrimidin-2-amine (PPA) and ethyl 5-methyl-1-((pyrimidin-2-yl amino) methyl)− 1 H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate (PPC), was evaluated by mass loss measurements and electrochemical assays for mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl at 308 K. In this survey, PPA and PPC products were chosen as inhibitors owing to their environmentally friendly formulation and biodegradability, which aligns with the growing demand for sustainable compounds. Besides, the molecular structure of PPA and PPC was precisely designed to provide higher effectiveness towards corrosion. The derived results revealed that the inhibition activities of both PPA and PPC were enhanced with concentration increase reaching maximal values of 91.15% and 92.39% for PPA and PPC, respectively. Conversely, the mitigation potency dropped by approximately 42.28% (for PPA) and 31.30% (for PPC) as the temperature increased from 308 to 348. PDP plots revealed that PPC and PPA is mixed type inhibitor in 1 M HCl. The adsorption mechanisms of the two inhibitors was examined on micro/nano level with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The derived outcomes indicated high inhibition performance owing to the adsorption of PPA and PPC on MS surface, forming thus a shielding layer that precludes the MS dissolution in the acidic solution. The experimental findings were further confirmed by theoretical descriptors obtained from DFT and Molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) investigations.

Abstract:The synergistic corrosion inhibition effect between calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) and three kinds of inorganic inhibitors (Na2MoO4, Na2SnO3, and NaWO4) with various molar ratios on Q235 carbon steel in alkaline solution (pH 11.5) with 0.02 mol/L NaCl was investigated by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Molybdate and stannate in hybrid inhibitor could promote the passivation of steel and form a complex film, which could suppress the corrosion effectively. Moreover, the insoluble metal oxides in the complex film formed by three kinds of inorganic inhibitor could help the adsorption of CLS onto the steel surface. The CLS molecules could adsorb onto the steel surface and metal oxides to form an adsorption film to protect the steel from corrosion. A three-layer protection film formed by a hybrid inhibitor, including passivation film, deposition film, and adsorption film, would effectively inhibit the corrosion reactions on the steel surface. The CLS compound with molybdate with the ratio of 2:3 shows the best inhibition effect on both general corrosion and localized corrosion.

Abstract:The synergistic inhibition effect of the complex of 2-undecyl-N-carboxymethyl-N-hydroxyethly imidazoline (UHCI) and potassium iodide (KI) on the corrosion of 45# carbon steel subjected to 4 wt.% citric acid solution is explored by weight loss testing, electrochemical measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Based on the weight loss test, 94.15% inhibition capacity is obtained by compound inhibitors (UHCI:KI=30:10) after immersion in 4 wt.% citric acid for 8 h, which is consistent with the results from electrochemical technology. The discussion extends to the effects of temperature and immersion time to achieve the ideal inhibition performance for further protection. The adsorption of the studied compound fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model. The XPS analysis confirms physical and chemical interactions between the UHCI/KI complex inhibitors and metal surface to defend the aggressive electrolyte. Additionally, the corrosion inhibition mechanism of UHCI inhibitor in the presence of iodine ions in the citric acid solution is discussed.

Abstract:<p>A sulfonate surfactant (CHT) was synthesized, reacted with 2-benzothiazolethiol (MBT) to obtain CHMT to investigate the intramolecular synergistic inhibition effect of CHT and MBT. The results from electrochemical experiment and theoretical studies indicated that CHMT and CHT + MBT strongly inhibited the corrosion of carbon steel in 3.5% NaCl solution compared to MBT or CHT, revealing intramolecular and intermolecular synergistic action between CHT and MBT. Additionally, the mechanisms of intramolecular and intermolecular synergistic effects were proposed.</p>

Synergistic Effect of Imidazoline Derivative and Benzimidazole As Corrosion Inhibitors for Q235 Steel: an Electrochemical, XPS, FT-IR and MD Study

Abstract:The corrosion inhibition effect and synergistic mechanism of novel imidazoline derivative (SMIF) and benzimidazole (BMZ) in 3.5 wt% simulated concrete solution were studied experimentally and theoretically. The complex inhibitors have the most outstanding inhibition efficiency when SMIF concentration is 0.1 g/L and BMZ is 0.9 g/L, the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of weight loss, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Potentiodynamic polarization curve (Tafel) were 88.81%, 86.27% and 90.22%, respectively. Electrochemistry analysis results proved that the corrosion inhibition mechanism of the inhibitors in the corrosion solution was mainly the formation of a protective film on the surface of carbon steel. FT-IR, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy all proved the existence of the protective film. Molecular dynamics proved that the composite inhibitor molecules could be stable on the surface of carbon steel and when consist of complex inhibitor was 0.1 g/L SMIF and 0.9 g/L BMZ the stable adsorption morphology were the highest. This work confirmed that SMIF and BMZ inhibitors have a good synergistic effect, greatly improving the inhibition efficiency and reducing the cost of corrosion inhibition, and has a certain guiding significance for synergistic inhibition.
The inhibition performance of heterocyclic compounds on Q235 steel in methanol/formic acid medium: Experimental and theory

Abstract:The present paper discusses the adsorption and inhibitory effect of nitrogen-containing compound, 1-dodecyl-3-methyimidazolium chloride (DMIC), dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) and hexadecylpyridinium chloride monohydrate (HDPC) on Q235 steel corrosion in a new system(10 mol·L−1 methanol/0.1 mol·L−1 formic acid medium. The experimental study was carried out using a series of techniques such as weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). contact angle test, Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscope (AFM) served to identify microscopic variation on Fe surface. Adsorption isotherm model controlling the adsorption process are calculated and discussed. Moreover, the relationships between molecular structure and corrosion inhibition performance of three inhibitors were verified by quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. The results obtained from the electrochemical methods showed that DMIC, DPC and HDPC imparted high resistance and behaved as mixed-type corrosion inhibitors dominated with anode. inhibition efficiency (η%) increased with the increase of inhibitors concentration to attained 88.81%, 92.69%, 93.67% at 0.06 mol·L−1, respectively. Surface studies confirmed the existence of an adsorption film on the metal surface. The obtained results demonstrated that the adsorption process on the metal surface followed the Langmuir adsorption model. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulation (MD) testified the effect of the chemical structure of three inhibitors on its inhibition efficiency, which had a good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Corrosion of carbon steel in CO 2 -containing brine solutions is a major issue in the oil and gas industry. In this study, comparison of different structure thio-alcohols, dithiothreitol (DTT) and mercaptoethanol (ME), in synergism with oleic imidazoline (IM) for inhibiting corrosion of carbon steel in CO 2 -saturated oil/brine solution was investigated. The corrosion inhibition effect and mechanism of the mixed corrosion inhibitors (IM-DTT and IM-ME) were assessed using weight loss, electrochemical techniques, surface characterizations and theoretical simulations. The results demonstrate that DTT have better synergism with IM than that of ME in corrosion inhibition. IM-DTT is co-adsorbed forms a highly hydrophobic inhibition film on the specimen surface, which exhibits high stability and film persistency. DTT is preferentially adsorbs on the steel surface through S atoms, followed by the adsorption of IM through N atoms. The co-adsorbed film becomes denser due to hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions between IM and DTT molecule.

Abstract:The corrosion resistance of Q235 steel treated with pure thiourea, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium bromide (DDBAB), and their mixture (i.e. DTAB-Thiourea, DDBAB-Thiourea) in sulfuric acid was studied. Results showed that DTAB-Thiourea and DDBAB-Thiourea have strong synergistic effects (4.86 and 5.99) and could inhibit corrosion by 93.37% and 94.98%, respectively. These effects are attributed to a decrease in the steric hindrance due to changes in the molecular adsorption mode of the corrosion inhibitors. The adsorption forms of all inhibitors on the steel surface were investigated and explained using density functional theory.

Abstract:Many sectors have employed various strategies to prolong the life of steel because of its strength and high manufacturing and installation costs. The use of organic inhibitors has been widely in recent years. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the reactivity of recently synthetized derivatives, namely (Z)-5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-dione (FT-2a), (Z)-5-(2,4-dichlorobenzylidene)thiazolidine-2,4-dione (FT-2c) and (Z)-3-allyl-5-(2,4-dichlorobenzylidene)thiazolidine-2,4-dione (FT-3c), in inhibiting corrosion was assessed through electrochemical assays on carbon steel (CS) in 1 M HCl at 303 K. The chosen products (FT-2a, FT-2c and FT-3c) were selected as corrosion inhibitors due to their eco-friendly composition and biodegradability, aligning with the increasing demand for sustainable products. The findings revealed that the inhibitory activities of FT-2a, FT-2c and FT-3c were improved with increasing concentration, reaching maximum values of 94.10%, 95.30% and 96.50% for FT-2a, FT-2c and FT-3c, respectively. In contrast, the corrosion mitigation effectiveness decreased by around 22.69% (for FT-2a), 18.87% (for FT-2c) and 17.81% (for FT-3c) with the rise in temperature from 303 to 333 K. An overview of potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) plots unveiled that the three products function as mixed-type inhibitors and adsorb according to Langmuir isotherm in the corrosive 1 M HCl solution. Surface analysis [Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDX), contact angle (CA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)] of the CS specimens demonstrated that the chosen inhibitors were absorbed and formed protective layers that mitigated the impact of corrosion. Strong interactions between FT-2a, FT-2c and FT-3c molecules and Fe ions at particular atomic sites were identified by analysis of UV-visible spectra. Using techniques such as Fukui functions, molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) and DFT calculations, the impact of the molecular structure of FT-2a, FT-2c and FT-3c on their capacity to suppress corrosion was investigated. In addition, the protonation of thiazolidine derivatives in acidic media was studied. The results of these various methods were very coherent.
