Abstract:The seasonal cold energy storage is a high-efficient and environmental-friendly technology that uses the stored natural cold energy in winter for free-cooling in summer without any power consumption for cold energy production. This study first suggests a natural cold energy storage based on oscillating heat pipe and presents the experimental investigation on the operational characteristics of the oscillating heat pipe at sub-zero temperatures for cold energy production. The oscillating heat pipe could transport heat quickly using rapid self-excited two-phase flow oscillation within very simple structure than any other conventional heat pipe technologies, thus it can cause significant improvement of cold energy production and storage. In the present study, the oscillating heat pipe was manufactured using a copper meandering tube with inner diameter of 2 mm and 5-turns, and R-134a was used as the working fluid. It is found that the lower ambient temperature causes the stable and higher thermal performance of the oscillating heat pipe and advances the time when the temperatures of the evaporator, condenser, and water decreases to 0 °C. When the cold energy is stored in the form of ice, the cold energy storage using oscillating heat pipe with 5-turns could produce and store the amount of cold heats by maximum sensible heat of 662 kJ and maximum latent heat of 2,345 kJ. Therefore, the maximum total amount of stored cold heat is about 2,784 kJ. The higher initial water temperature increases the amount of stored cold heat by sensible heat and the lower ambient temperature makes it possible to produce the cold heat more quickly.
