Abstract:In the newly excavated epitaphs, there are three concerned Liu Changqing, a famous poet in the middle Tang dynasty. Depending on the epitaphs and other presented documents, we can further discuss several problems about Liu Changqing’s life story. First, he was the chief military officer in Junyi county, Chenliu prefecture. Secondly, the date of his success in the highest imperial examination is determined with the new proofs. Thirdly, the time when he was the imperial supervisor can be determined now. Fourthly the time when he became the Zhuanyun judge of E-yue is cleared.

Abstract:Elegy is an important segment of funeral custom in ancient times and is a special genre of mourning literature.Most of the elegies are played by the band in the process of funeral,and those engraved on the stele are very rare.A batch of elegies engraved on the newly excavated epitaph of the Tang Dynasty have been discovered,which possess important reference value as the poetry of the Tang Dynasty.These elegies can be divided into two types:one is excavated on the cover of epitaph;and the other is from the epitaph.These two types of elegies have their uniqueness in terms of the author,the object the author mourned,the content and form.Meanwhile,the elegy of the Tang Dynasty has a very close relationship with the funeral custom and the etiquette custom,and therefore can help us know and understand the funeral custom of the Tang Dynasty.Furthermore,through comparative research on the elegies engraved on the newly excavated epitaph of the Tang Dynasty and the elegies handed down,we can obtain a deeper understanding toward the special literary value and sociocultural significance of elegies.

Abstract:Chen Duxiu's life is a legend,full of opposition,intensity,and subversion.The core of his idea is to clear up and reconstruct the relationship between "nation" and "nationals" during the thorough transition from empire to republic,and on that basis develop a modern country.By making a voice of time,he became the center of attention.By caring for the rising group of new youth,he won a large number of followers.Additionally by pioneering the transformations from nation to nationals and from politics to culture,Chen Duxiu,together with Hu Shih,replaced Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao to be the represents of the era.The responsibility of intellectuals changed him from a person who never discussed political affairs to participate in political revolutions,and even claim himself to be a politician for a long time.But in fact politics was not his advantage,and in the lonely later years he eventually returned to the academic circle.

Abstract:Han China (202 BCE-220 CE) is a haunted world filled with spirits, demons, and ghosts of all kinds, whose influence is felt everywhere. In a time when variegated theories on the spirit world and mortuary traditions vie with each other for prominence, Wang Chong (27-ca. 100 CE), a most original philosopher, offers his systematic treatment of these contentious issues. Writing in a lively style with passion, reason, and patience, Wang Chong actively engages himself in these debates and applies organized and meticulous inquiry to tell fallacies of belief from what he believes to be the truth. This paper examines Wang Chong’s arguments on post-mortem existence and thrifty burial in detail and pays special attention to the strengths and weaknesses of his thesis.

Abstract:The prosperity of Han-fu is due to the reverence to officers of the sacrificial rites and to the high evaluation of the literary works in the historical period of Emperor Wu and Emperor Xuan of Han Dynasty. Numerous descriptions of the sacrificial rites in Han-fu are also due to the historical fact that, when deciding to practice sacrificial rites, Emperor Wu decreed that such men of letters as Sima Xiangru should create Shi (poetry) and (prose with verse). The Anthology divides into 15 types, of which the most important ones are Great Fu such as Capitals , Sacrificial Rites and Hunting , all focusing mainly on the rites of Emperor. Such works are the first vivid descriptions of the royal rites in history, and the composers'attitudes toward the construction of the religions in Han Dynasty demonstrate the literary spirit of the harmony between religious culture and the rigorous Li (rites) in reality.

Abstract:Epitaph and poetry are two different literary genres in ancient China. However, when they collectively address the theme of “mourning the deceased”, they demonstrate an evident phenomenon of permeation and interaction. Pan Yue, as the pioneer of mourning poetry, his personal expressions as well as the scenes and objects in his mourning poems have become fixed imageries of mourning, which have been applied to the epitaphs written by later literati for their deceased wives, enhancing the mourning attributes of these inscriptions. Some renowned poets such as Wei Yingwu 韦应物 (737–791) from the Tang 唐 Dynasty (618–907), and Li Mengyang 李梦阳 (1473–1530), from the Ming 明 Dynasty (1368–1644) would personally write tomb inscriptions while creating mourning poems for their deceased wives. Reading these two kinds of texts from the same author side by side not only deepens our understanding of both types of text, but also helps to examine the intertextual interactions between these two literary forms.

Abstract:Survival and death are the two most important things in life. The ancient Chinese people attached great importance to death, so the funeral ceremonies were very complete. Since its inception, Taoism has actively participated in funeral activities, so the combination of epitaphs and tomb inscriptions has a historical origin. The establishment of a unified dynasty in the Sui Dynasty provided an opportunity for the integration and development of Taoism in the north and south. The Mao Shanzong (茅山宗) in the southern region began to spread to the north, gradually integrating Lou Guan Dao (樓觀道) and becoming the mainstream of Northern Taoism. The epitaph of Wu Tong in the Sui Dynasty is engraved with rich Taoist symbols, and the epitaph text adopts the language content of “Zhen Gao” (真誥), which is a typical representative of the integration of Northern and Southern Taoism and reflects Taoism’s concern for death.
