Abstract:The ideas voiced so far about Xun Yu's death fall into two kinds. The fact, however, is that Xun Yu was neither a Wei subject who was in favor of Cao Cao nor a Han subject who was in favor of the Han Dynasty. As a matter of fact, he bade farewell to the world in a state of mental confusion and spiritual conflicts.

Abstract:Qian Xun is an intellectual in the transitional period with knowledge mixed with the old and the new,as well as an "extraordinary talent" in the history of modern diplomacy.His experience as a diplomat in Japan is worthy of further study.The author has investigated Qian's character,education background and political opinion,and clarified his relationships with Zhang Zhidong,the central government and the Reform Party.The author has proved that the so-called Zhang Zhidong's imperial dream is not true.

Abstract:In the Northern Expedition,"Down with Warlords"became the most important slogan for revolutionary mobilization and the dominant target of the war.At this critical moment,Tang Jiyao,the Yunnan warlord died; and his lonely death presented a striking contrast to his vigorous and colorful life.People could not help but lament his untimely death,for he passed away when he was right down at the bottom of his life.Previously powerful and influential figures,if they failed to keep pace with the times,were doomed to be abandoned by history.Contemporary comments and particular historical context provide us with a different perspective on how those once important historical figures soon faded out of the world and how the first-generation warlords in modern China took their curtain calls on the historical stage.

Abstract:The life and death of a historical figure generally makes a starting point and the end of studies on him. But, in fact, because of the differences of positions and ideas, there would be disputes that make up new topics for study. Zhang Zhidong’s death is such a case. The diversity of valuation on his life on various newspapers can not only probe the orientation of the editors, but also observe the reflection of opinions and attitudes, which is valuable for probing the movement of politics and society on the death of an important figure.

Abstract:Due to differences in traditional cultures,the view of life and death between Chinese and Westerners takes on distinctive connotations.The Chinese traditional culture is manifested by Confucianism and Taoism;the former treats life mainly from the perspective of "birth",focusing on existence;and the latter considers life as a natural process,emphasizing life's own course.As a contrast,Westerners view life chiefly from the perspective of "termination"(i.e.death).Consequently,these differences in perspectives will result in disagreements on their view of life and death.

Abstract:Yue Fei was killed by conspiracy of the Southern Song Dynasty and the Jin Dynasty:the Jin Dynasty wanted to have peace negotiations in order to keep the occupied territory to the north of the Yellow River and the Huaihe River,which is also the external cause of Yue Fei's persecution.The monarch and his subjects,and the war and peace parties unanimously advocated withdrawing the military power and implementing laws handed down from forefathers.Besides,Zhao Gou,Qin Kuai and so on attempted to keep half of the country,which is the internal cause of Yue Fei's persecution.Zhao Gou and Qin Kuai were equally responsible for Yue Fei's death.It was the tendency to withdraw the military power at that time.The Jin Dynasty withdrew the military power earlier than the Southern Song Dynasty.Considering Wu Xi's treason,there were risks to be generals for generations and it was not necessarily insignificant to withdraw the military power.Qin Kuai's function of being a hidden traitor led Shaoxing Treaty to be a humiliated and unequal one,but it played a positive role in rehabilitation for both the Southern Song Dynasty and the Jin Dynasty.

Abstract:Mr Gu Yanwu was a great enlightener and thinker of China in the 17th century.With the background of the replacement of the Ming Dynasty by the Qing Dynasty,Mr Gu gave a good summary of the historical lessons of the collapse of the Ming dynasty and reevaluated the economy,politics,ideology and culture of the Chinese tradition and proposed the far-sighted idea of learning the past for the future.He summarized the wisdom of the great men in the past 3,000 years in China and critically inherited the new ideas since the late Ming Dynasty in China.His new theoretical contributions to philosophy,history,ethics,economy,politics,religion and literature made him a great master of learning and exerted a far-reaching influence on the ideological emancipation and the social reform in the late Qing Dynasty.

The writer of paper attempts to dissertate Han Yu′s special way in writing epitaphs from four aspects: his expression of dissatisfactions through relating others′experiences, his expression of thought through commenting others′personalities, his expression of literary view through commenting others′works, and his humorous writing style.

Abstract:In a famous article written in 1928 when the Left-wing writers of the Sun and Creation Societies were criticising Lu Xun for being behind the times, Qian Xingcun (A Ying) asserted that the age of Ah Q was already past. Fifty years later Chen Baichen's dramatization of Ah Q Zhengzhuan , which was staged in 1981 as part of the Lu Xun centenary celebrations, ends with the narrator declaring that although Ah Q had no women it was not true that he would have no descendants, because his line would continue for generations to come. It is, of course, possible to reconcile these two apparently contradictory statements. Qian Xingcun was referring to the fact that the peasant masses were becoming politically organized, having played an important role in the revolutionary movements of those years. He did not claim that people like Ah Q no longer existed. Chen Baichen, on the other hand, was referring to the Ah Q mentality which still lives on in people's minds, long after Ah Q himself has been executed. He did not see this mentality as the dominant force in society. Nevertheless there have been striking changes of attitude towards Ah Q in recent years. Since the end of the Cultural Revolution it has been generally recognized that the Ah Q mentality is still a force in China which is holding back attempts at modernization and that many other aspects of the Chinese traditional society and culture which Lu Xun criticized in his stories and essays have still not been eradicated 45 years after his death.

Abstract:Memorial to the Throne on the Northern Expedition is the most important reference for the study on Xie Lingyun.However,very little attention has been paid to it.In the present study on the basis of a review of the previous scholars ' viewpoints about Xie Lingyun,we conclude that his fundamental motivation of presenting the memorial to the throne was to show his political attitude toward the Emperor Wen and the regime of the Song Period in a hope to alleviate his contradiction with the Emperor Wen.At the same time,he also expressed his wish to become a hermit.Judging from his later political encounters,this memorial to the throne played a positive role.

Abstract:There is probably no idea more difficult to contemplate clearly than death and dying, especially one’s own. How we think about death, however, will surely be influenced by what we think about life and living in general, and more specifically how we define ourselves as human beings. The early Confucians viewed persons very differently than contemporary Western thinkers and developed a ritual orientation grounded in the family that had both ethical and religious (but not transcendental) dimensions, in which the death of the body was not seen as abrupt and final, but rather as a stage that began before our embodiment, and will continue long after its dissolution.

Abstract:The dispute about Puyi involved the title of the biological father of King Yingzong in the Song Dynasty. The courtsplit accordingly into two camps headed by Prime Minister and Imperial Counsellor respectively. Ouyang Xiu was on the side of the Imperial Counsellor in the dispute, which later provoked an attack on him and ultimately caused his downfall and demise. In the Song Dynasty, the bureaucratic elite had a louder say in state affairs; however, the dispute about Puyi was an evidence for the defects of this political system.

Abstract:On the 19th day of the third lunar month in 1644, Emperor Zongzheng of Ming Dynasty hung himself. People in the southeastern coastal area created a discourse of the Sun Birthday to commemorate him. After the establishment of Qing Dynasty, the symbolic meaning of "3. 19" changed from the revengement of the forefathers and monarchs to " the resistance of Qing Dynasty to restore Ming Dynasty" . When Emperor Zongzheng was put into the "3. 19" discourse as its subject matter, the date began its history of memory ( being remembered and forgotten) . From the vantage-point of the archeology of knowledge, the discourse, after its loss of national memory, existed long in the individual memory even up to the early 1900s. In the anti-Qing opposition of Manchu, the discourse was narrated in the context of a nation-state. As a result, it acquired its modern significance. Numerous discourses of this kind brought forth after the downfall of Qing Dynasty, however, are virtually the consequences of ideological conflicts.

Abstract:During the Revolution of 1911,Sun Baoqi,the last governor of Shandong,not only showed loyalty to the Qing government,but also remained sympathetic to the revolutionaries.He hoped that the Qing government would become reconciled with the Revolutionary Party.But he failed to keep a normal heart when faced with pressure from both the people calling for independence of Shandong and the Qing government.Sun Baoqi was forced to declare independence of Shandong.Once Yuan Shikai instigated the Fifth Zhen to oppose independence of Shandong,Sun Baoqi became subservient to the will of Yuan Shikai and declared to give up independence of Shandong.This turn brought about division of the political personality of Sun Baoqi,but protected Shandong from a war.Therefore,Sun Baoqi’s decision is understandable.

Abstract:The stint of Qian Weiyan as R egent of the Western Capital happened to be the early days of Ouyang Xiu’s political career and the period when Ouyang’s literary ideas took shape. Qian and the Luoyang literary community he led laid a solid foundation for the climax of the Song literature revolution ushered in by Ouyang Xiu. Ouyang Xiu and Qian have a deep connection. Qian had positive influence on Ouyang in three respects, i.e. the formal beauty of literary works, the transmission of good scholarship, and a role model as chief of the literary circle. Qian also helped Ouyang get on the right track of literary creation. Luoyang period was also remembered by Ouyang Xiu all his life.

Abstract:The problem of utterance was one of the major issues discussed by the scholars in wei-jin period.The discussion was centred on whether Dao is effable.As an important figure of wei-jin Xuanxue,Xun Can stated that Dao could be conveyed by the subtle words.Xun Can's statement is significant in the sense that he had been started to concern about the metaphysical level.That could be seen as the indication of the academic turn from Han to Wei-jin.In this paper I also argued that most of the previous studies were more focusing on the ineffable aspect.However,for Xuanxue scholars how to convey Dao was their real purports.
