Abstract:In modern times,while Western learnings were introduced into China,Confucian classics became historiography.The East Zhejiang scholarship integrated the classics with the institution,which made it an important site for modern scholars to communicate between the old（China） and the new（West）,and build the new academic system.Liu Xianxin regarded the East Zhejiang scholarship his principal learning.He compiled The Collection of Roots（Xianhe Lu） many times,and constructed an academic genealogy of the East Zhejiang scholarship which perceived the Wuzhou historiography as the surface and Yaojiang Neo-Confucianism as the core.Moreover,Liu Xianxin explored the academic origin of literary and historical collation of the East Zhejiang School in the way of "knowing the categories and understanding the general system",and tried to integrate the study of life with the study of classics and history,in order to achieve the modern transformation of Chinese scholarship.The paper probes the sources and purposes of the original meaning and theme of Xianhe Lu,and hopes to show that the modern East Zhejiang School had been constantly shaped in the historical context and academic network.In addition,the paper also tends to provide some thoughts on how to clarify the changes of modern scholarship and analyze the transformation of Chinese civilization.

Abstract:Chen Yinke and Qian Mu,starting with mutual interpretation between poetry and history,have made great contributions to the formation of poetics.First,they give a poetic interpretation to the formation of national culture;second,they conclusively prove that romantic personality embodies the cultural idiosyncrasy in the life of a nation;third,they provide a poetic description of the beautiful spirit in Chinese culture;and fourth,they lay stress on the free spiritual experience in the history of national literature.All these provide some enlightenments to the reconstruction of contemporary poetics and axiological aesthetics.

Abstract:Chen Yinque,the great historian,wrote a series of prefaces to the works by other scholars and epilogues with reference to old documents,in which he reflected on his academic experience and research methods,and expressed his feelings about life and worldly affairs.These writings are not only based on Chen's interpretation and affirmation of the significance of the academic researches with his sympathy of understanding,but also serve as a way to comfort his friends,which can be seen as important materials to reveal Chen Yinque's academic approaches and spirits as well as his attitude towards life.This article discusses Chen's research methods in history studies by analyzing dozens of his prefaces and epilogues collected in the Anthology of Chen Yinque,and also attempts to interpret Chen Yinque both as a person and as a scholar in an alternative way.

Abstract:This paper points out more than 20 commentaries on Zhen Chuan's essays (essays written by Gui Youguang) in the Qing Dynasty and summarizes the major characteristics of his essays, which are concerned with life and kinship and which are structured like stories with prosaic plots, before it fully ascertains their status in the history of Chinese prose. The paper analyzes some of the main arguments which deny the value of Zhen Chuan's essays and assesses Gui Youguang in a new light. The writer of this paper argues that Gui Youguang was a pioneer who played a key role in the process of literary transformation where Chinese prose changed from topics of officials to those of folks, from mixed to pure literature, and from ancient literature to modern literature. If he is assessed in the light of his capacity as such a pioneer, it seems plausible that Gui Youguang can never be over-evaluated.

Abstract:Yuan Shuoyou arrived in Chengdu as Sichuan special envoy on the March of the third year of Qingyuan(1197 AD),and left here three years later.During this period,he organized the compilation of "Chengdu Genre",which should be his greatest contribution to the inheritance of Shu culture.However,as a talented writer and poet,he has also created so many works in Shu.His poetry themes were not abundant,mostly antiphon poetry for his colleagues and travel poetry on his way to Shu,but these poems became a true record of Yuan Shuoyou’s living condition in Sichuan.And the poems were plain and direct in language,richness in imagery.They embodied the characteristics of this stage of his poetry.

Abstract:Great historian Chen Yinke wrote a series of prefaces to the works of other scholars and epilogues with reference to old documents, in which he presented his considerations of his academic road and research methods, and expressed his feelings about life and worldly affairs. These writings are not only Chen's profound interpretation and affirmation of the significance of the academic researches with the "sympathy of understanding", but also serve as a way to comfort his friends, which can be seen as important materials to reveal his academic experiences, spirits and views. This article intends to discuss Chen’s research methods and ideas in history studies by analyzing dozens of prefaces and epilogues collected in the "Anthology of Chen Yinke", and thus wishes to comb out a fresh interpretive mode for the studies of Chen Yingke and his scholarship.

Abstract:Through the analysis of Xiao Hong's novel Sheng Si Chang (Field of Life and Death), this article points out that Xiao Hong's writing was quite loyal to the being of the modern Chinese folk due to her experience of frustrations with a sensitive heart. On the stand of enlightenment, she reached the perfection both in the depth of exposing the ignorance and savageness of Chinese folk and in revealing their firm holds of life and bitter struggles before death, which proves Xiao Hong among the best writers in modern China. Her poetic tone, lyrical sentences and hovering emotions, also mark herself as one of the modern Chinese writers who owned a keen sense of literary style.

Abstract:He Zhuo was a commentator in early Qing dynasty.This paper studies his poem criticism,taking Li Shangyin's poems as example.For him,criticism was academic reach exactly.He connected textual research and criticism,which guided a new way of criticism.And he fabricated his poem theory by criticism,overmatch criticism in Ming dynasty which was just the emotion in the reading.What's more his criticism had academic value because he commented on the base of textual research.So his criticism had great academic and poetic value.

Abstract:Though Lu Yao's Ordinary World(Pingfan de Shijie)has enjoyed considerable sales volume and reading quantity similar to his other novel Life(Rensheng),it is not accepted by the literary circle as Life and failed to spark the kind of nationwide discussion once created by Life.One explanation for this is the sweeping desire for innovation that was present in literary circles in the 1980s,but the creation method of the Ordinary World was too conservative to stimulate the interpretive impulse of the new critics;another reason is that the incredible length and sheer complexity of Ordinary World prevented scholars from recognizing how difficult it was conceived and what innovation it made.This paper embarks on an intensive reading of Ordinary World in terms of its characterization,the character groups of urban and rural youths,senior cadres,and rural grassroots cadres,and a re-elucidation of its"overlapping areas,"in an attempt to extensively analyze the content of the panoramic chronicle of Chinese society at the beginning of reform and opening up,and the writer's profound thinking and artistic innovation in his description,trying to clarify the many vague understandings of this masterpiece in the literary circle.

Abstract:The current scholarship has not paid enough attention to the complexity of life and the richness of the spiritual world of individuals who lived in the great transitional age.Even the spiritual world of some famous individuals has been largely ignored.In recent years,scholars have introduced the methodology of life history into publishing history.This paper attempts to explore the personality,thoughts,and feelings of Zhang Yuanji as a publisher by reading his 81 letters to his nephew Zhang Shuyuan.The letters are not only a family narrative between a famous publisher and an ordinary intellectual,but also a family history of expressing warmth,tenderness,and education ideas,which contains both traditional filial piety and modern ethics.The letters between the uncle and the nephew have conveyed their thoughts on life and worldly phenomena,which well-reflected the living background of the intellectuals at that time.It is a real life-culture.The letters are helpful for scholars to observe another aspect of Zhang Yuanji’s life history as an excellent publisher.There are always numerous personal histories behind the grand history.In the correspondence between Zhang Yuanji and his nephew,we can see how they constantly talked to the reality and wrote their personal little histories with their individual efforts.It is a "folk and social history in the mailbox".

Abstract:Abstract Studies on Tao Yuanming have often focused on his personality, reclusive life, and pastoral poetry. However, Tao’s extant oeuvre includes a large number of poems on history. This article aims to complement current scholarship by exploring his viewpoints on life through a close reading of his poems on history. His poems on history are a key to Tao’s perspectives with regard to the factors that decide a successful political career, the best way to cope with difficulties and frustrations, and the situations in which literati should withdraw from public life. Examining his positions reveals the connections between these different aspects. These poems express Tao’s perspectives on life, as informed by his historical predecessors and philosophical beliefs, and as developed through his own life experience and efforts at poetic composition.
