On the Theme of the Emotional Pattern and Stylistic Characteristics of the Human-Goddess Love Described in the Prose Poems from the Late Han Dynasty to Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty

Abstract:The prose poems with the theme of the human-goddess love appeared from the late Han Dynasty to Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty.Represented by the theme of the goddess in Cao Zhi's Luoshenfu(An Ode the Goddess of the Luo River),they featured the confrontation between the human instinctive love and the constrains of feudal ethics,which is far form being obvious in political implication or in taking the goddess as the symbol of the transcendental ideal.Similarly,those with the theme of preventing love represented by Tao Yuanming's Xianqingfu(preventing love) revealed the same subject matter of emotion on the confrontation between the said love and the constrains.Therefore,″goddess″ and ″preventing love″,just like both sides of a coin,are two inseparable themes at that time.This finds expression in a writer's creating these two types of prose poems at the same time.Furthermore,they both express the common pattern of emotion and aim at describing the human experience of real feelings and the above-mentioned confrontation,which is characterized by relieving the unrealized human emotions instead of restraining the budding love.This emotion theme,if compared with that of the human-goddess love in the supernatural stories written during the period of Three Kingdoms,the Jin Dynasty and the Northern and Southern Dynasties,reflects the strong demand of the individual's life instinct and its expression in reality.The reason that the said love theme could be demonstrated in the prose poems is because the writers of this particular genre in the late Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty used and developed the genre.Specifically,the writers made appropriate use of artistic fabrication and the first person narration as the carrier of love theme.Besides,they found the stylistic pattern in which they fully expressed themselves by utilizing the function of elaboration and that of praising and satirizing.The writes of prose poems at that time,following the then famous writer Song Yu's combined pattern of praising and satirizing,actually changed the aim of prose poems remonstrating with the sovereign by praising,thus turning their function into that of expressing individual love and life.As poetry began to feature sensual pleasures in the Southern Dynasties,palace poetry gradually became the mainstream form of literature.Its direct influence on the prose poems with the human-goddess love theme resulted in the reduction of such poems.
