Abstract:Solid state physics is an exciting field of study that has revolutionized the world of modern electronics and advanced technology. This book is intended for graduate engineers who seek to deepen their understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of solid-state physics. The book is divided into five chapters, each covering a different aspect of solid-state physics. Chapter 1 introduces the basic concepts of crystal structures, including lattice structures, symmetry operations, and crystallographic planes and directions. Chapter 2 focuses on conductors and superconductors, including the electrical and thermal properties of metals, the Meissner effect, and the BCS theory of superconductivity. Chapter 3 delves into semiconductor physics, including band theory, carrier transport, and the physics of p-n junctions. Chapter 4 explores magnetic and dielectric physics, including the behavior of magnetic materials, ferroelectricity, and the physics of dielectric materials. Abstract:This short chapter gives a glimpse of how concepts studied in other areas of physics, e.g., energy losses of ionizing particles in matter, connect to solid-state physics. The basic ideas behind transistors are discussed, and a topic of current research interest is introduced: creation of vacancies in diamond by electron irradiation. It is also shown that a lot about magnetic domains can be understood from “back-of-the-envelope” estimates.

Abstract:Introductory textbooks in solid state physics present solvable models for illustrating the occurrence of allowed bands and forbidden gaps in the energy spectrum of Bloch electrons. However, the quantum mechanical description of electrons in non-periodic solids, such as amorphous materials, is beyond the scope of introductory courses because of its intrinsic complexity. The tight-binding approximation can account for such a scenario by letting the atomic levels vary at random from lattice site to site. We theoretically tackle the study of the average properties of the energy spectrum by introducing a transfer matrix method that allows us to obtain closed expressions for the so-called coherent potential. The coherent potential is energy-dependent and constant in space. It replaces the actual atomic random potential, thus generating a periodic effective medium with the same average properties as the non-periodic solid. We demonstrate that the average density of states can be calculated within this framework without relying on heavy mathematical machinery. Thus, our approach is suitable for introductory courses in solid state physics and materials science.

Abstract:The path-integral formulation of the statistical mechanics of quantum many-body systems is described, with the purpose of introducing practical techniques for the simulation of solids. Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics methods for distinguishable quantum particles are presented, with particular attention to the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. Applications of these computational techniques to different types of solids are reviewed, including noble-gas solids (helium and heavier elements), group-IV materials (diamond and elemental semiconductors), and molecular solids (with emphasis on hydrogen and ice). Structural, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of these materials are discussed. Applications also include point defects in solids (structure and diffusion), as well as nuclear quantum effects in solid surfaces and adsorbates. Different phenomena are discussed, as solid-to-solid and orientational phase transitions, rates of quantum processes, classical-to-quantum crossover, and various finite-temperature anharmonic effects (thermal expansion, isotopic effects, electron-phonon interactions). Nuclear quantum effects are most remarkable in the presence of light atoms, so that especial emphasis is laid on solids containing hydrogen as a constituent element or as an impurity.

Soliton Gas: Theory, Numerics and Experiments

Abstract:The concept of soliton gas was introduced in 1971 by V. Zakharov as an infinite collection of weakly interacting solitons in the framework of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In this theoretical construction of a diluted soliton gas, solitons with random parameters are almost non-overlapping. More recently, the concept has been extended to dense gases in which solitons strongly and continuously interact. The notion of soliton gas is inherently associated with integrable wave systems described by nonlinear partial differential equations like the KdV equation or the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation that can be solved using the inverse scattering transform. Over the last few years, the field of soliton gases has received a rapidly growing interest from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. In particular, it has been realized that the soliton gas dynamics underlies some fundamental nonlinear wave phenomena such as spontaneous modulation instability and the formation of rogue waves. The recently discovered deep connections of soliton gas theory with generalized hydrodynamics have broadened the field and opened new fundamental questions related to the soliton gas statistics and thermodynamics. We review the main recent theoretical and experimental results in the field of soliton gas. The key conceptual tools of the field, such as the inverse scattering transform, the thermodynamic limit of finite-gap potentials and the Generalized Gibbs Ensembles are introduced and various open questions and future challenges are discussed.

Abstract:Chemical PhysicsMany physical properties of liquid water remain unresolved due to the very fast dynamics involved in the liquid phase. Using attosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, Jordan et al. found that photoemission of electrons from water in the liquid phase shows a time delay of about 50 to 70 attoseconds compared with photoemission from the gas phase. This difference was attributed to solvation effects and was validated by analysis of various contributions to the measured delays and by using theoretical simulations in water clusters of different sizes.Science , this issue p. Abstract:The quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) in combination with density-functional theory is the main computational method used to calculate thermodynamic properties under arbitrary temperature and pressure conditions. QHA can predict thermodynamic phase diagrams, elastic properties, and thermal conductivities, all of which are important in various fields of knowledge. The main drawback of QHA is that it makes spurious predictions for the volume and other properties in the high temperature limit due to its approximate treatment of anharmonicity. In this work, we propose a simple extension to QHA that fixes this problem. Our approach is based on four ingredients: i) the calculation of the n-th order force constants using randomly displaced configurations and regularized regression, ii) the calculation of temperature-dependent effective harmonic frequencies with self-consistent harmonic approximation (SCHA), iii) Allen's quasiparticle (QP) theory, which allows the calculation of the anharmonic entropy from the effective frequencies, and iv) a simple Debye-like numerical model that enables the calculation of all other thermodynamic properties from the QP entropies. The proposed method is conceptually simple, with a computational complexity similar to QHA, and allows incorporating anharmonic effects to any order. The predictions of the new method coincide with QHA in the low-temperature limit and eliminate the QHA blowout at high temperature, recovering the experimentally observed behavior of all thermodynamic properties tested. The performance of our new method is demonstrated by calculating the thermodynamic properties of geologically relevant minerals MgO and CaO. We expect this new method to be an important tool in geochemistry and materials discovery.

Abstract:Macroscopic systems of hydrogen molecules exhibit a rich thermodynamic phase behavior. Due to the simplicity of the molecular constituents a detailed exploration of the thermal properties of these boson systems at low temperatures is of fundamental interest. Here, we report theoretical and experimental results on various spatial correlation functions and corresponding distributions in momentum space of liquid para-hydrogen close to the triple point. They characterize the structure of the correlated liquid and provide information on quantum effects present in this Bose fluid. Numerical calculations employ Correlated Density-Matrix (CDM) theory and Path-Integral Monte-Carlo(PIMC)simulations. A comparison of these theoretical results demonstrates the accuracy of CDM theory. This algorithm therefore permits a fast and efficient quantitative analysis of the normal phase of liquid para-hydrogen. We compare and discuss the theoretical results with available experimental data.

Abstract:The question of whether a Bose solid has a superfluid fraction is discussed. We confirm and expand on the remark of Chester that quantum fluctuations make this inevitable, roughly estimate its magnitude, and show that true rigid rotation depends on the generation of vortex defects. We also suggest a model wave-function for the superfluid solid.

Abstract:Postulates of the quantum atomistic solid-state theory (QUASST) have been presented. QUASST is an extension of the crystal-field theory and is applicable to compounds containing open-shell 3d, 4f and 5f atoms. QUASST points out the existence in a solid of the atomic-like discrete electronic structure determined by the crystal- field and spin-orbit interactions. This approach unifies the description of 3d and 4f ions and allows to bridge the atomic physics and the solid-state physics.

Abstract:When a few tens of charged particles are trapped in a spherical electrostatic potential at low temperature they form concentric shells resembling atoms. These ``artificial atoms'' can be easily controlled by varying the confinement strength. We analyze such systems for the case that the particles are bosons and find superfluid behavior which even persists in the solid state. This novel state of matter is a mesoscopic supersolid.
