Abstract:Observations and interpretation of extragalactic rotational and rovibrational H2 emission are reviewed. Direct observations of H2 lines do not trace bulk H2 mass, but excitation rate. As such, the H2 lines are unique diagnostics, if the excitation mechanism can be determined, which generally requires high-quality spectroscopy and suitable additional data. The diagnostic power of the H2 lines is illustrated by two cases studies: H2 purely rotational line emission from the disk of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC891 and high resolution imaging and spectroscopy of H2 vibrational line emision from the luminous merger NGC6240.

Abstract:The question of whether a Bose solid has a superfluid fraction is discussed. We confirm and expand on the remark of Chester that quantum fluctuations make this inevitable, roughly estimate its magnitude, and show that true rigid rotation depends on the generation of vortex defects. We also suggest a model wave-function for the superfluid solid.

Abstract:A microscopic statistical model of a quantum solid is developed, where inside a crystalline lattice there can exist regions of disorder, such as dislocation networks or grain boundaries. The cores of these regions of disorder are allowed for exhibiting fluid-like properties. If the solid is composed of Bose atoms, then the fluid-like aggregations inside the regions of disorder can exhibit Bose-Einstein condensation and hence superfluidity. The regions of disorder are randomly distributed throughout the sample, so that for describing the overall properties of the solid requires to accomplish averaging over the disordered aggregation configurations. The averaging procedure results in a renormalized Hamiltonian of a solid that can combine the properties of a crystal and superfluidity. The possibility of such a combination depends on the system parameters. In general, there exists a range of the model parameters allowing for the occurrence of superfluidity inside the disordered aggregations. This microscopic statistical model gives the opportunity to answer which real quantum crystals can exhibit the property of superfluidity and which cannot.

Abstract:Recently, a new category of superfluids and superconductors has been discovered in various systems. These could be linked to the idea of a supersolid phase, featuring a macroscopic wavefunction with spatial modulation resulting from simultaneous, spontaneous breaking of gauge and translational symmetries. However, this relation has only been recognized in some cases and there is the need for universal properties quantifying the differences between supersolids and ordinary superfluids/superconductors or crystals. A key property is the superfluid fraction, which measures the reduction in superfluid stiffness due to spatial modulation, leading to the non-standard superfluid dynamics of supersolids. Here we employ the Josephson effect, common in superfluids and superconductors, to measure the superfluid fraction in a supersolid. Even without a physical barrier, the Josephson effect arises spontaneously in a supersolid due to spatial modulation. Individual lattice cells act as self-induced Josephson junctions, allowing the direct determination of the local superfluid fraction. We studied a cold-atom dipolar supersolid, revealing a significant sub-unity superfluid fraction. Our results open new research directions, enabling the exploration of novel phenomena like partially quantized vortices and supercurrents, potentially unifying the understanding of supersolid-like systems, and introducing a new type of Josephson junction.

Comments On Supersolidity

Abstract:Assuming that the well-confirmed non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) effect in solid $^4$He, suggested by Leggett, indicates supersolid behavior, we make a number of remarks about both theory and experiment. (1) The long-wavelength, low-frequency ("hydrodynamic") part of the theory of Andreev and Lifshitz has nine variables, and thus must have nine modes. We find a new mode associated with lattice point diffusion (and thus vacancy diffusion); it may explain the absence of supersolid behavior in low-frequency pressure-driven flow. (2) The observed upper limit for the NCRI fraction (NCRIf) of about 20%, in disordered samples, is more-or-less the same as the already predicted upper limit for the superfluid fraction of a well-ordered crystal; we argue that this may not be a coincidence. (3) The negative experimental evidence for a second propagating hydrodynamic mode (expected to be fourth sound-like) may be due to the long relaxation times $\tau$ at low temperature $T$; only for frequencies satisfying $\omega\tau\ll1$ does the hydrodynamic theory apply. (4) The fundamental principles of quantum mechanics imply that Bose-Einstein condensation is not necessary to define a quantum-mechanical phase; therefore the absence of a finite condensate fraction $f_{0}$ does not necessarily imply the absence of superfluidity. (5) Just as vortices should avoid occupied lattice sites to provide a vortex-lattice interaction, the lattice should interact with the vortices to provide a lattice-vortex interaction; thus dislocations should interact with vortices, whose motion is affected by rotation. We discuss some experimental implications for the vortex liquid model, shear response, hysteresis, and relaxation.

Abstract:A "supersolid" -- a crystal that exhibits an off-diagonal long-range order and a superflow -- has been a subject of much research since its first proposal [Andreev and Lifshitz 1969], but has not been realized as a ground state of short-range interacting bosons in a continuum. In this note I point out a simple and generic mechanism for a thermally-driven reentrant supersolidity, and discuss challenges of experimental realization of this idea. In the limit of bosons in a periodic potential, this mechanism reduces to a {\em reentrant} low-temperature normal-superfluid transition, that should be accessible to simulations and in current experiments on bosonic atoms in an optical periodic potential.

Abstract:A new class of superfluids and superconductors with spatially periodic modulation of the superfluid density is arising 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 . It might be related to the supersolid phase of matter, in which the spontaneous breaking of gauge and translational symmetries leads to a spatially modulated macroscopic wavefunction 13,14,15,16 . This relation was recognized only in some cases 1,2,5,6,7,8,9 and there is the need for a universal property quantifying the differences between supersolids and ordinary matter, such as the superfluid fraction, which measures the reduction in superfluid stiffness resulting from the spatial modulation 16,17,18 . The superfluid fraction was introduced long ago 16 , but it has not yet been assessed experimentally. Here we demonstrate an innovative method to measure the superfluid fraction based on the Josephson effect, a ubiquitous phenomenon associated with the presence of a physical barrier between two superfluids or superconductors 19 , which might also be expected for supersolids 20 , owing to the spatial modulation. We demonstrate that individual cells of a supersolid can sustain Josephson oscillations and we show that, from the current–phase dynamics, we can derive directly the superfluid fraction. Our study of a cold-atom dipolar supersolid 7 reveals a relatively large sub-unity superfluid fraction that makes realistic the study of previously unknown phenomena such as partially quantized vortices and supercurrents 16,17,18 . Our results open a new direction of research that may unify the description of all supersolid-like systems.

Abstract:Pure substances can often be cooled below their melting points and still remain in the liquid state. For some supercooled liquids, a further cooling slows down viscous flow greatly, but does not slow down self-diffusion as much. We formulate a continuum theory that regards viscous flow and self-diffusion as concurrent, but distinct, processes. We generalize Newton's law of viscosity to relate stress, rate of deformation, and chemical potential. The self-diffusion flux is taken to be proportional to the gradient of chemical potential. The relative rate of viscous flow and self-diffusion defines a length, which, for some supercooled liquids, is much larger than the molecular dimension. A thermodynamic consideration leads to boundary conditions for a surface of liquid under the influence of applied traction and surface energy. We apply the theory to a cavity in a supercooled liquid and identify a transition. A large cavity shrinks by viscous flow, and a small cavity shrinks by self-diffusion.

Abstract:Even when ideal solids are insulating, their states with crystallographic defects may have superfluid properties. It became clear recently that edge dislocations in $^4$He featuring a combination of microscopic quantum roughness and superfluidity of their cores may represent a new paradigmatic class of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids. The new state of matter, termed transverse quantum fluid (TQF), is found in a variety of physical setups. The key ingredient defining the class of TQF systems is infinite compressibility, which is responsible for all other unusual properties such as the quadratic spectrum (or even the absence) of normal modes, irrelevance of the Landau criterion, off-diagonal long-range order at $T = 0$, and the exponential dependence of the phase slip probability on the inverse flow velocity. From a conceptual point of view, the TQF state is a striking demonstration of the conditional character of many dogmas associated with superfluidity, including the necessity of elementary excitations, in general, and the ones obeying Landau criterion in particular.

Abstract:One scenario for the non-classical moment of inertia of solid He-4 discovered by Kim and Chan [Nature 427, 225 (2004)] is the superfluidity of micro-crystallite interfaces. On the basis of the most simple model of a quantum crystal--the checkerboard lattice solid--we show that the superfluidity of interfaces between solid domains can exist in a wide range of parameters. At strong enough inter-particle interaction, a superfluid interface becomes an insulator via a quantum phase transition. Under the conditions of particle-hole symmetry, the transition is of the standard U(1) universality class in 3D, while in 2D the onset of superfluidity is accompanied by the interface roughening, driven by fractionally charged topological excitations.

Sounds waves and fluctuations in one-dimensional supersolids

Abstract:We examine the low-energy excitations of a dilute supersolid state of matter with a one-dimensional crystal structure. A hydrodynamic description is developed based on a Lagrangian, incorporating generalized elastic parameters derived from ground state calculations. The predictions of the hydrodynamic theory are validated against solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, by comparing the speeds of sound, density fluctuations, and phase fluctuations of the two gapless bands. Our results are presented for two distinct supersolid models: a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in an infinite tube and a dilute Bose gas of atoms with soft-core interactions. Characteristic energy scales are identified, highlighting that these two models approximately realize the bulk incompressible and rigid lattice supersolid limits.

Abstract:We consider the superfluid phase of a specific renormalizable relativistic quantum field theory. We prove that, within the regime of validity of perturbation theory and of the superfluid effective theory, there are consistent and regular vortex solutions where the superfluid's velocity field as traditionally defined smoothly interpolates between zero and arbitrarily large superluminal values. We show that this solution is free of instabilities and of superluminal excitations. We show that, in contrast, a generic vortex solution for an ordinary fluid does develop an instability if the velocity field becomes superluminal. All this questions the characterization of a superfluid velocity field as the actual velocity of "something".

Abstract:Supersolids are a fundamental quantum phase of matter where the global phase and translational symmetries are spontaneously broken. The recently discovered supersolidity in quantum gases of strongly magnetic atoms gives the opportunity to explore in depth how superfluidity and crystalline order are mixed in this fascinating phase. The dipolar supersolid is usually created from a Bose-Einstein condensate, i.e., a standard superfluid, crossing a quantum phase transition that is related to the crystallization transitions of ordinary matter. In this work, we assess experimentally and theoretically the character of the superfluid-supersolid quantum phase transition. We find that one-row supersolids can have already two types of phase transitions, discontinuous and continuous, that are reminiscent of the first- and second-order transitions predicted in the thermodynamic limit in 2D and 1D, respectively. The dimensional crossover is peculiar to supersolids, is controlled via the transverse confinement and the atom number, and can be justified on the general ground of the Landau theory of phase transitions. Excitations of a two-dimensional supersolid

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the excitations of the two-dimensional supersolid state of a Bose-Einstein condensate with either dipole-dipole interactions or soft-core interactions. This supersolid state has three gapless excitation branches arising from the spontaneously broken continuous symmetries. Two of these branches are related to longitudinal sound waves, similar to those in one-dimensional supersolids. The third branch is a transverse wave arising from the non-zero shear modulus of the two-dimensional crystal. We present the results of numerical calculations for the excitations and dynamic structure factor characterising the density fluctuations, and study their behavior across the discontinuous superfluid to supersolid transition. We show that the speeds of sound are described by a hydrodynamic theory that incorporates generalized elastic parameters, including the shear modulus. Furthermore, we establish that dipolar and soft-core supersolids manifest distinct characteristics, falling into the bulk incompressible and rigid lattice limits, respectively.

Abstract:We give a general review of recent developments in the theory of vortices in superfluids and superconductors, discussing why the dynamics of vortices is important, and why some key results are still controversial. We discuss work that we have done on the dynamics of quantized vortices in a superfluid. Despite the fact that this problem has been recognized as important for forty years, there is still a lot of controversy about the forces on and masses of quantized vortices. We think that one can get unambiguous answers by considering a broken symmetry state that consists of one vortex in an infinite ideal system. We argue for a Magnus force that is proportional to the superfluid density, and we find that the effective mass density of a vortex in a neutral superfluid is divergent at low frequencies. We have generalized some of the results for a neutral superfluid to a charged system.

Abstract:Supersolid states simultaneously feature properties typically associated with a solid and with a superfluid. Like a solid, they possess crystalline order, manifesting as a periodic modulation of the particle density; but unlike a typical solid, they also have superfluid properties, resulting from coherent particle delocalization across the system. Such states were initially envisioned in the context of bulk solid helium, as a possible answer to the question of whether a solid could have superfluid properties1,2,3,4,5. Although supersolidity has not been observed in solid helium (despite much effort)6, ultracold atomic gases provide an alternative approach, recently enabling the observation and study of supersolids with dipolar atoms7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16. However, unlike the proposed phenomena in helium, these gaseous systems have so far only shown supersolidity along a single direction. Here we demonstrate the extension of supersolid properties into two dimensions by preparing a supersolid quantum gas of dysprosium atoms on both sides of a structural phase transition similar to those occurring in ionic chains17,18,19,20, quantum wires21,22 and theoretically in chains of individual dipolar particles23,24. This opens the possibility of studying rich excitation properties25,26,27,28, including vortex formation29,30,31, and ground-state phases with varied geometrical structure7,32 in a highly flexible and controllable system.

Abstract:When a few tens of charged particles are trapped in a spherical electrostatic potential at low temperature they form concentric shells resembling atoms. These ``artificial atoms'' can be easily controlled by varying the confinement strength. We analyze such systems for the case that the particles are bosons and find superfluid behavior which even persists in the solid state. This novel state of matter is a mesoscopic supersolid.

Abstract:Dislocation model of the supersolid state of $^4$He was proposed in 1987 by one of the authors of the review. The model obtained strong support by numerous experimental and theoretical investigations from 2007 to date. In these investigations the validity of the idea put forward in 1987 was confirmed, and new conceptions of superclimb of dislocations and of the giant isochoric compressibility or the syringe effect were proposed. In this paper we review main achievements of theoretical and experimental studies of dislocation-induced supersolid and present current understanding of this phenomenon.
