Abstract:It appeared worthwhile to us to present a state-of-the-art look at the field of ferroelectrics. We are certainly not attempting to provide a complete review of all aspects of the field of ferroelectrics over the last years but we wish to transport a flavour of the current excitement in the field through the (subjective) choice of four specific examples of current interest: (i) Piezoelectrics and the morphotropic phase boundary, (ii) Multiferroics, (iii) The effect of high pressure on ferroelectrics and (iv) Strain-engineering in ferroelectric oxide thin films. For each topic we will try to work out both current interesting approaches and an outlook into future challenges. Throughout our discussion, the reader is referred to a list of significant review articles, books and papers in the field.

Abstract:The rapidly growing demand for data storage and processing, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-intensive applications, is posing a serious challenge for current computing devices based on the von Neumann architecture. For every calculation, data sets need to be shuffled sequentially between the processor, and multiple memory and storage units through bandwidth-limited and energy-inefficient interconnects, typically causing 40% power wastage. Phase-change materials (PCMs) show great promise to break this bottleneck by enabling nonvolatile memory devices that can optimize the complex memory hierarchy, and neuro-inspired computing devices that can unify computing with storage in memory cells. The articles in this issue of MRS Bulletin highlight recent breakthroughs in the fundamental materials science, as well as electronic and photonic implementations of these novel devices based on PCMs.

Abstract:While extensive experimental activities have been carried out to study the phase transitions and ferroelectric properties of BaZrxTi1-xO3 solid solutions, the corresponding theoretical understanding is largely lacking due to the unavailability of thermodynamic potentials for this system. In this work, an eighth-order polynomial of thermodynamic potential for BaZrxTi1-xO3 (x <= 0.3) solid solutions is established based on the existing potential coefficients of BaTiO3 and theexperimentally measured phase diagram of BaZrxTi1-xO3 solid solutions. It is then employed to predict and understand the domain structures and switching for BaZrxTi1-xO3 (x <= 0.3) single crystals using phase-field simulations. The simulated domain structures and switching are consistent with thermodynamic analysis and available experimental measurements, validating the established thermodynamic potential. It is expected that this thermodynamic potential will find wide applications to studying the phase transitions and ferroelectric properties of BaZrxTi1-xO3 (x <= 0.3) bulk and nanoscale materials. Abstract:This special topic in JOM, Phase Stability, Phase Transformations, and Reactive Phase Formation, is sponsored by the Alloy Phases Committee and presents fi ve articles. In the fi rst paper, K. Suganuma and coworkers, from Osaka University, Japan, give a comprehensive overview of high-temperature lead-free solders including their properties and phase formation. High-temperature, lead-free soldering is a key technology for electronics components and assemblies, and requires a high level of process control. The interconnections must withstand temperatures beyond 250oC for a short period and offer high reliability against thermal cycling as well as good heat dissipation. Therefore, a robust design concept is needed based on materials science in order to obtain the new technology. Y.-C. Wu et al., from National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, study phase ordering transformation of L1 0 ordered FePt fi lm by controlling stress and diffusion. The ordering process of a disordered FePt is controlled by a kinetic process. The paper proposes several ways to accelerate phase transformation at low temperature. An extra driving force for diffusion was provided by ion irradiation or dynamic stress; the diffusion length was diminished by using atomic-scale multilayer deposition. In addition, the novel sputtering scheme, atomic-scale multilayer deposition, can effectively promote the (001) texture of L1 0 FePt grown on amorphous substrates without any underlayer J.P. Chu from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, reports an interesting phase transformation phenomenon, annealing-induced amorphization in a copper-based (Cu 51 Zr 42 Al 4 Ti 3 ) glass-forming thin fi lm. Chu found that upon annealing in the supercooled liquid region, a fully amorphous structure is developed and this leads to a softening this study, suffer from lower toughness caused by secondary phase precipitation especially when these steels undergo thermal treatments. In this study the infl uence of thermal treatment parameters on the precipitation of these secondary phases was investigated. A phase is a homogeneous region of matter and is the building block of materials. Different spatial arrangements of molecules lead to different phases and result in different materials properties. These fi ve articles clearly indicate that “phases” are important for all kinds of materials including structural materials, magnetic materials, glasses, and electronic materials. It can be noticed as well that the contributors are from different regions of the world. As one of the oldest committees in TMS, the Alloy Phases Committee clearly indicates the very early awareness of the importance of “phase” in material studies by the TMS members. The Alloy Phases Committee has also sponsored a Phase Stability, Phase Transformations, and Reactive Phase Formation in Electronic Materials symposium at the TMS Annual Meeting for eight consecutive years. In the foreword of the January 2009 Journal of Electronic Materials special issue, it is mentioned that the internationalized “phase” ( , , фаза, fase, faza) is the key word. The same globalized spirit should be shared. Although it might not necessarily get hotter and more crowded, the world of materials science has undoubtedly become more fl attened, and global cooperation will be the key for the future.

Abstract:VO2 is a classical strongly correlated material. At TC = 68 °C, the insulator‐metal phase transition occurs, and with the structural transition from monoclinic to tetragonal rutile phase, the optical and electrical properties have undergone tremendous changes. The phase transition can respond to a variety of external excitations, such as thermal, electric, light, strain and magnetic. The magical changes in physical properties and multiple stimulus response characteristics make VO2 have application potential in the field of optical and electrical devices. At present, it is widely used in the fields of optical/electrical switch components, neural networks, mechanical structures and smart windows. Under physical conditions such as TC = 68 °C, Vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes a reversible transformation from a monoclinic phase to a tetragonal rutile phase. This transformation is accompanied by a series of changes in physical properties, including transmittance, conductivity, and refractive index, which make it an excellent functional material. Based on this, VO2 has been extensively researched and applied in the fields of electronics and optics, yielding remarkable results and making it a hot research material. This paper reviews the phase transition mechanisms and optical/electrical properties of VO2, as well as its phase transition hysteresis. From the application perspective, this paper summarizes the modulation content under various external excitations and the element doping effects. Finally, this paper summarizes the classic VO2‐based devices, and points out the development direction and potential of VO2 in optics and electronics. This review provides a systematic summary of VO2, which is useful for its practical applications.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials offer a large variety of possibilities in fabrication of solid- state devices. Phase change materials (PCMs) undergo rapid and drastic changes of their optical properties upon switching from one crystallographic phase to another one. This peculiarity makes PCMs ideal candidates for a number of applications including sensors, active displays, photonic volatile and non-volatile memories for information storage and computer science and optoelectronic devices. This review analyzes different examples of PCMs, in particular germanium–antimonium tellurides and vanadium dioxide (VO2) and their applications in the above-mentioned fields, with a detailed discussion on potential, limitations and challenges.

Abstract:Structural switch for fast switching Phase-change materials are important for computer memory. They can quickly switch from glassy to crystalline using a thermal pulse and then lock in that structure for a long time at lower temperature. Zalden et al. probed the underlying atomic structure of two phase-change materials during this switching using ultrafast x-rays and simulations (see the Perspective by Rao et al. ). A liquid-liquid phase transition in both materials allowed fast switching at high temperatures. The lower-temperature glass locks in the structure, allowing for long-term memory storage. Abstract:Here, we introduce phase change mechanisms in lead-free piezoceramics as a strategy to utilize attendant volume change for harvesting large electrostrain. In the newly developed (K,Na)NbO3 solid-solution at the polymorphic phase boundary we combine atomic mapping of the local polar vector with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory to uncover the phase change and interpret its underlying nature. We demonstrate that an electric field-induced phase transition between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases triggers a dramatic volume change and contributes to a huge effective piezoelectric coefficient of 1250 pm V-1 along specific crystallographic directions. The existence of the phase transition is validated by a significant volume change evidenced by the simultaneous recording of macroscopic longitudinal and transverse strain. The principle of using phase transition to promote electrostrain provides broader design flexibility in the development of high-performance piezoelectric materials and opens the door for the discovery of high-performance future functional oxides.

Abstract:Since the early days of electrical energy sources (from equipment such as Leyden jars by von Kleist and van Musschenbroek and Otto von Guerickes electrostatic generator [1]), there has always been a need to disconnect the energy source from its load. In the early days, this was a manual operation and most likely involved simply cutting or removing the wires from the source. As the early electrical engineers ingenuity prevailed, however, mechanical, and then electromechanical, control devices were invented, with the subsequent new applications that came from those. Fast forward to later years, and vacuum tubes (or valves), then solid-state control devices operated by voltages, currents, or photons, and then finally MEMS control devices were invented, with new applications being created that literally span the spectrum of dc to daylight. Recently, a new switching technique has been advanced using so-called phase change materials, which go from a high-impedance state to a low-impedance state by the application (or removal) of heat. I have been interested in solid-state control devices for many years, and so I was intrigued when Tejinder Singh and Pierre Blondy of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) Technical Committee 6 (TC-6) on RF MEMS and Microwave Acoustics contacted me to organize this months focus issue on control devices using these phase change materials. Tejinder and Pierre have selected three articles on phase change materials, and I encourage you to start your reading of the focus issue papers with their Guest Editorial column where they introduce the articles and provide a little background on TC-6. I would like to thank Tejinder and Pierre not only for organizing the issue but also serving as authors on two of the three focus issue features. I know you will find this months focus on phase change material devices interesting. We also have a fourth paper to round out the technical portion of the issue written by Dipankar Shakya et al. [A1] where the authors describe a facility that is open to all.

Abstract:The succession of suggested mechanisms of solid-state phase transitions - Second-order, Lambda, Martensitic, Displacive, Topological, Order-Disorder, Soft-mode, Incommensurate, Scaling and Quantum - are analyzed and explained why they cannot be realized in nature. All of them assume a cooperative structural rearrangement as opposed to the only real one which is simply a variant of the crystal growth. Like all kinds of crystal growth, a solid state phase transition proceeds by molecule-by-molecule building building the crystal of a different structure, while the surrounding original crystal is used as the building material.

Abstract:The desire to exert active optical control over matter is a unifying theme across multiple scientific disciplines, as exemplified by all-optical magnetic switching, light-induced metastable or exotic phases of solids and the coherent control of chemical reactions. Typically, these approaches dynamically steer a system towards states or reaction products far from equilibrium. In solids, metal-insulator transitions are an important target for optical manipulation, offering dramatic and ultrafast changes of the electronic and lattice properties. In this context, essential questions concern the role of coherence in the efficiencies and thresholds of such transitions. Here, we demonstrate coherent vibrational control over a metal-insulator structural phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional solid-state surface system. An optical double-pulse excitation scheme is used to drive the system from the insulating to a metastable metallic state, and the corresponding structural changes are monitored by ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction. We observe strong oscillations in the switching efficiency as a function of the double-pulse delay, revealing the importance of vibrational coherence in two key structural modes governing the transition on a femtosecond timescale. This mode-selective coherent control of solids and surfaces could open new routes to switching chemical and physical functionalities, facilitated by metastable and non-equilibrium states.

Abstract:Phase-change materials (PCMs) that can reversibly transit between crystalline and amorphous phases have been widely used for data-storage and other functional devices. As PCMs scale down to nanoscale, the properties and transition procedures can vary, bringing both challenges and opportunities in scalability. This article describes the physical structures, properties and applications of nanoscale phase-change materials and devices. The limitations and performance of scaling properties in phase-change materials and the recent progress and challenges in phase-change devices are presented.
