Abstract:AbstractNanoindentation creep behavior was studied on a coarse-grained Al0.3CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy with a single face-centered cubic structure. The effects of the indentation size and loading rate on creep behavior were investigated. The experimental results show that the hardness, creep depth, creep strain rate, and stress exponent are all dependent on the holding load and loading rate. The creep behavior shows a remarkable indentation size effect at different maximum indentation loads. The dominant creep mechanism is dislocation creep at high indentation loads and self-diffusion at low indentation loads. An obvious loading rate sensitivity of creep behavior is found under different loading rates for the alloy. A high loading rate can lead to a high strain gradient, and numerous dislocations emerge and entangle together. Then during the holding time, a large creep deformation characteristic with a high stress exponent will happen.

Abstract:Time-dependent plastic deformation behavior of nanocrystalline (nc) and coarse-grained (cg) CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) was systematically explored through a series of spherical nanoindentation creep experiments. High-pressure torsion (HPT) processing was performed for achieving nc microstructure in the HEA, leading to a reduction in grain size from ∼46 μm for the as-cast state to ∼ 33 nm at the edge of the HPT disk after 2 turns. Indentation creep tests revealed that creep deformation indeed occurs in both cg and nc HEAs even at room temperature and it is more pronounced with an increase in strain. The creep stress exponent, n, was estimated as ∼3 for cg HEA and ∼1 for nc HEA and the predominant creep mechanisms were investigated in terms of the values of n and the activation volumes. Through theoretical calculations and comparison of the creep strain rates for nc HEA and a conventional face-centered-cubic nc metal (Ni), the influence of sluggish diffusion on the creep resistance of nc HEA was analyzed. In addition, sharp indentation creep tests were performed for comparison purposes and the results confirmed that the use of a spherical indenter is clearly more appropriate for investigating the creep behavior of this HEA.

Abstract:Time-dependent plastic deformation, also known as creep, can occur in high-melting-point materials at room temperature when subjected to submicron plastic contact (e.g., components in micro-electronic mechanical systems) due to the extremely high stress conditions. Previous investigations of creep behavior at submicron scale mainly focus on uniform microstructures, whereas recently developed high-performance structural materials usually show complex microstructural heterogeneities. Here, we demonstrate a high-throughput nanoindentation approach to unveil the creep behavior of locally diverse microstructures, via a case study on an interstitial high-entropy alloy (iHEA). The prototype iHEA specimen was firstly pre-strained by severe cold-rolling to achieve diverse microstructure features including dense dislocations, nanotwins and nanograins. Nanoindentation mapping with 144 indents is conducted to collect creep data from all types of diverse microstructures, followed by systematical calculations based on power-law analysis. Then intuitive contour maps of nanohardness (H), strain rate (ε ̇) and stress exponent (n) are attained. The individual creep mechanism of each microstructure variant is evaluated by correlating local microstructure features with corresponding creep responses from these contour maps. With the increase of n value for different sample regions, the ε ̇ value inversely reduces and the corresponding dominant creep mechanism gradually converts from diffusion-mediated mode to dislocation-controlled one. The presence of nanograins and nanotwins significantly hinders dislocation interactions and promotes stress-induced diffusion. This work verifies that nanoindentation creep behavior is highly correlated with local microstructure features, and the mapping approach is feasible for evaluating creep-resistance of locally diverse microstructures under extremely high-stress conditions.

Abstract:As a potential novel superalloy, the study on the creep of high entropy alloys is of great significance. Equiatomic ratio CoCrFeMnNi with a mass of 6.7 kg was fabricated by vacuum induction levitation melting. Dendrite structure is obtained for as-cast alloy while a homogeneous equiaxed grain structure can be formed after annealing at 1273 K for 6 hours. The tensile creep behavior of as-annealed alloy at 773 - 973 K and 50 – 340 MPa is systematically studied. Apparent dynamic recovery and recrystallization occur for creep at 973 K while high dislocation density can be observed for creep at 923 K and lower temperatures. Results of EDS analyses on fractured surface, stress exponent and activation energy for steady state creep rate suggest that the creep mechanism should be the dislocation viscous glide dragged by solute Mn at low stresses and low temperatures and be the dislocation climb associated with Mn diffusion at high stresses and high temperatures.

Elevated-temperature Deformation Mechanisms in a CrMnFeCoNi High-Entropy Alloy

Abstract:Stress reduction creep experiments were performed on a CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy at 1073 K to characterize the steady-state and transient creep properties of this material. From measurements of constant-structure creep, the activation area for deformation of CrMnFeCoNi was determined to be ∼100 b2 and to decrease with increasing applied stress, indicating the presence of both concentrated solid solution and forest dislocation control of high temperature plastic deformation. With the aid of a recent solid solution theory for high entropy alloys, quantitative separation of the two mechanisms was carried out using a Haasen plot and the results show that creep in CrMnFeCoNi relies heavily on thermal activation and the majority of creep strength comes from solid solution hardening, especially at low applied stresses. The overall analysis conducted in this study reveals that steady-state creep deformation of CrMnFeCoNi at 1073 K can be adequately described by existing concentrated solid solution hardening models and forest dislocation hardening models. This observation suggests it may be possible to develop a unified treatment of the dislocation glide kinetics for this alloy from cryogenic to elevated temperatures.

Abstract:This article presents the high temperature tensile and creep behaviors of a novel high entropy alloy (HEA). The microstructure of this HEA resembles that of advanced superalloys with a high entropy FCC matrix and L12 ordered precipitates, so it is also named as “high entropy superalloy (HESA)”. The tensile yield strengths of HESA surpass those of the reported HEAs from room temperature to elevated temperatures; furthermore, its creep resistance at 982 °C can be compared to those of some Ni-based superalloys. Analysis on experimental results indicate that HESA could be strengthened by the low stacking-fault energy of the matrix, high anti-phase boundary energy of the strengthening precipitate, and thermally stable microstructure. Positive misfit between FCC matrix and precipitate has yielded parallel raft microstructure during creep at 982 °C, and the creep curves of HESA were dominated by tertiary creep behavior. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this article is the first to present the elevated temperature tensile creep study on full scale specimens of a high entropy alloy, and the potential of HESA for high temperature structural application is discussed.

Abstract:In this study, nanoindentation tests with continuous stiffness measurement technique were measured to investigate the deformation behavior of a high-entropy alloy AlCoCrFeNi under different indentation strain rates at room temperature. Results suggest that the creep behavior exhibits remarkable strain rate dependence. In-situ scanning images showed a conspicuous pileup around the indents, indicating that an extremely localized plastic deformation occurred during the nanoindentation. Under different strain rates, elastic modulus basically remains unchanged, while the hardness decreases with increasing indentation depth due to the indentation size effect. Furthermore, the modulus and hardness of AlCoCrFeNi HEAs are greater than that of the AlxCoCrFeNi (x = 0.3,0.5) at the strain rate of 0.2 s−1 due to its higher negative enthalpy of mixing related to the atomic binding force, and the solid solution strengthening induced by the lattice distortion, respectively.

Abstract:<p>Selective laser melting (SLM) was used to fabricate an equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA). The SLM-fabricated CoCrFeMnNi HEA samples were studied with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and nanoindentation techniques to characterize the microstructure and creep behavior. It was found that the HEA comprised a single face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. Due to the fast solidification and high temperature gradients of the molten pool during the SLM process, the microstructure comprised cellular subgrains with grain boundary angles lower than 5°. Based on energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) maps, the constituent elements of the SLM-fabricated HEA were homogenously distributed. Moreover, the effect of the peak holding load on the nanoindentation creep deformation of the SLM-fabricated HEA was investigated using a Berkovich indenter. The results of this study indicated that the creep was mainly dominated by deformation controlled by dislocation motion.</p>

Abstract:An equiatomic, face-centered-cubic, CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy was tensile tested at 800 K and 1,000 K with a nominal strain rate of 6.7 × 10−6 s−1. In addition to the macroscopic (bulk) behavior, mesoscopic (lattice) phenomena during the pseudo-creep deformation were investigated simultaneously using in-situ neutron diffraction. The evolutions of lattice strains, peak widths, and intensities of several hkl reflections suggest that the dominant deformation mode is the dislocation glide at 800 K and diffusion-controlled dislocation creep at 1,000 K.

High-Temperature Nano-Indentation Creep of Reduced Activity High Entropy Alloys Based on 4-5-6 Elemental Palette

Abstract:There is a strong demand for materials with inherently high creep resistance in the harsh environment of next-generation nuclear reactors. High entropy alloys have drawn intense attention in this regard due to their excellent elevated temperature properties and irradiation resistance. Here, the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior of two refractory high entropy alloys was investigated, namely HfTaTiVZr and TaTiVWZr. These alloys are based on reduced activity metals from the 4-5-6 elemental palette that would allow easy post-service recycling after use in nuclear reactors. The creep behavior was investigated using nano-indentation over the temperature range of 298 K to 573 K under static and dynamic loads up to 5 N. Creep stress exponent for HfTaTiVZr and TaTiVWZr was found to be in the range of 20-140 and the activation volume was ~16-20b3, indicating dislocation dominated mechanism. The stress exponent increased with increasing indentation depth due to a higher density of dislocations and their entanglement at larger depth and the exponent decreased with increasing temperature due to thermally activated dislocations. Smaller creep displacement and higher activation energy for the two high entropy alloys indicate superior creep resistance compared to refractory pure metals like tungsten.

Abstract:Nanoindentation technique was adopted to study indentation size effects of physical-mechanical and creep performance with various depths (200–2000 nm) in GH901 utilising sharp and spherical tip. Residual impressions of both indenters with pile-up patterns are discussed. Nanohardness, reduced modulus and elastic recovery rates curves versus maximum displacement of two tips are obtained and nanohardness size effects are discussed with different models for Berkovich tip. The data obtained with spherical indentation are analysed separately by establishing stress–strain diagram. The creep results using Berkovich tip indicate that creep strain rate declines while creep stress exponent first decreases and then increases with the increasing depth; the creep stress exponent ( n ) values, 2.39–7.35, imply the dominant creep deformation mechanism is dislocation control.

Abstract:The effects of maximum load and loading rate on the creep behavior of the single-phase hexagonal close-packed structured GdHoLaTbY alloy at room temperature were investigated by nanoindentation. The hardness, creep depth, creep rate, and stress exponent strongly dependent on the maximum load and loading rate. The creep behavior of the alloy at different maximum loads shows a significant indentation size effect. The creep behavior is dominated by free diffusion at the sample surface at low load retaining loads and by dislocation sliding at high load retaining loads. The creep behavior of the current alloy is greatly sensitive to the indentation loading rate at different loading rates. Abstract:The high temperature creep behavior of a near-alpha Ti-6Al-4Sn-4Zr-0.8Mo-1Nb-1W-0.25Si alloy prepared by induction skull melting has been studied under the conditions of 625 degrees C-675 degrees C and 150 MPa-250 MPa using uniaxial creep tests in this work. Results indicated that the incoherent secondary phase particle, silicide, mainly precipitated from the alpha/beta lath interface, which has a positive effect on hindering the movement of dislocations and pinning alpha/beta lamellae boundaries during creep. The stress exponent and apparent activation energy was 7.2 at 650 degrees C and 417.6 kJ/mol at 200 MPa, respectively. The high stress exponent and apparent activation energy indicated that the creep process was controlled by dislocation climb and slip impeded by silicides. The main failure mechanism of the as-cast alloy during creep was the initiation, growth, and coalescence of cracks at the grain boundary, which was proven from the intergranular fracture feature.

Abstract:The tensile creep behavior of an equiatomic CoCrFeNiMn high-entropy alloy was systematically investigated over an intermediate temperature range (500–600 °C) and applied stress (140–400 MPa). The alloy exhibited a stress-dependent transition from a low-stress region (LSR-region I) to a high-stress region (HSR-region II). The LSR was characterized by a stress exponent of 5 to 6 and an average activation energy of 268 kJ mol−1, whereas the HSR showed much higher corresponding values of 8.9–14 and 380 kJ mol−1. Microstructural examinations on the deformed samples revealed remarkable dynamic recrystallization at higher stress levels. Dislocation jogging and tangling configurations were frequently observed in LSR and HSR at 550 and 600 °C, respectively. Moreover, dynamic precipitates identified as M23C6 or a Cr-rich σ phase were formed along grain boundaries in HSR. The diffusion-compensated strain rate versus modulus-compensated stress data analysis implied that the creep deformation in both stress regions was dominated by stress-assisted dislocation climb controlled by lattice diffusion. Nevertheless, the abnormally high stress exponents in HSR were ascribed to the coordinative contributions of dynamic recrystallization and dynamic precipitation. Simultaneously, the barriers imposed by these precipitates and severe initial deformation were referred to so as to increase the activation energy for creep deformation.

Abstract:Emerging high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit high strength, high ductility and high toughness relative to traditional alloys based on one or two principal elements. The superior mechanical properties are derived from a synergy of multiple deformation mechanisms and their interactions at different stages of plastic straining. It is thus important to uncover the activation and operation of deformation mechanisms in these materials for property optimization and potential structure applications. The present work carried out in-situ tensile deformation of a CrMnFeCoNi HEA at room temperature. The strain hardening rate did not change monotonically during tensile deformation. Surface morphology evolution revealed the effects of massive dislocation activity, activation of multiple slip bands and their interactions on the strain hardening rate. Crack-tip-opening-angle measurements show that the current alloy possesses high fracture toughness. Cracks initiated at dense slip zones and grain boundaries, and propagated gradually, eventually coalescing into main cracks and resulting in final fracture.

Abstract:To analyse the creep deformation characteristics of Inconel 617, vacuum flat indentation creep test and microstructure analysis were completed in this study. With an increase in the creep load and temperature, limiting primary creep deflection and power law coefficient increased. An apparent indentation primary creep stage was observed and proven to be about 15–25 h in flat indentation creep test here. To describe the macro–deformation of Inconel 617, a modified theta–projection model was proposed and proven to be a feasible method to predict flat indentation creep curve accurately. Subsequently, a creep life prediction method based on deformation control was proposed. Based on the Larson – Miller parameter, reasonable conversion relationship between indentation creep stress and uniaxial creep equivalent stress was established. Finally, the microstructure analysis was completed to investigate the creep deformation characteristic. A hemispherical region along with significant extended grains and increase in hardness were observed. Considerable amount of Cr-rich precipitates and a small amount of Mo-rich precipitates were observed. Meanwhile, the precipitates were found to be discontinuous and granular for short indentation creep times.
Characterization of mechanical properties of HP40Nb using indentation creep test

Abstract:HP40-Nb alloy has been widely used in petrochemical plants as high temperature components subjected mainly to failure mechanism of creep. However, conventional creep testing requires many samples and therefore is time consuming and inconvenient. In contrast, impression creep test is attractive for its convenience and reliability. The creep behavior of HP40-Nb alloy overheated at 1000 degrees C, 1100 degrees C, 1200 degrees C and 1250 degrees C is characterized through using an indentation creep test. The microstructure is examined by using Scanning Electrical Microscope (SEM). It is found that the amount of intra-dendritic carbides decreases with overheated temperature. No intra-dendritic carbide is observed for the specimen treated at 1100 degrees C, 1200 degrees C and 1250 degrees C. The steady creep rate reaches to the maximum when overheated temperature increasing to 1100 degrees C. There is a limitation for the measurement of creep damage of HP40-Nb due to the hindering of creep crack propagation.

Abstract:In this study, creep behavior of the face-centered-cubic (FCC) {111} and (1001 grains in single-phase Fe20Co20Ni20Cr20Mn20 and dual-phase Fe(18)Co(18)Ni(20)Cr(18)Mn(18)A(18) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) was evaluated using a nanoindentation method over temperatures range of 300-600 degrees C. We measured the creep response of the two different grain orientations in the two alloys in order to study the orientation and solid-solution effects. Creep stress exponent (similar to 3.8-5.0) and activation energy (240-260 kJ/mol) were extracted and analyzed from stain rate-stress and stain rate-temperature data to provide information on the creep mechanism. The results indicated that creep was controlled by dislocation climb in both alloys at both orientations. However, we pointed out that, based upon activation energy value alone, it was difficult to identify which elemental constituent would be the dominant diffusing species responsible for vacancy diffusion during the climb. It was found that creep activation volume for the current two HEAs (140 angstrom(3) or similar to 12 Omega, where Omega is the atomic volume) at 600 degrees C is larger than that reported for the Ni-based superalloys (similar to 50-100 angstrom(3) or less) within a similar temperature range. The significance of this larger activation volume is also discussed.

Abstract:AbstractNanoindentation of three metastable dual-phase high entropy alloys (HEAs) was performed to obtain their inherent elastoplastic deformation responses. Excellent combination of hardness and elastic modulus in as-cast condition confirmed that, their inherently higher strength compared to other HEAs reported in literature, can be attributed to alloy chemistry induced phase stability. Further, hardness of 8.28 GPa combined with modulus of 221.8 GPa was obtained in Fe-Mn-Co-Cr-Si-Cu HEA by annealing the as-cast material, which is the best hardness-modulus combination obtained to date in HEAs from nanoindentation. On the other hand, although Fe-Mn-Co-Cr-Si HEA showed lower hardness and modulus than Fe-Mn-Co-Cr-Si-Al and Fe-Mn-Co-Cr-Si-Cu HEAs, the former alloy exhibited the highest strain rate sensitivity, as determined from tests performed at five different strain rates. The three alloys also had subtle differences in incipient plasticity and elastoplastic behavior, while retaining similar levels of hardness; and nanoindentation response showed microstructural dependence in friction stir processed, annealed and tensile-deformed specimens. Thus, the study highlighted that while higher strength was achieved by designing a class of HEAs with similar composition, any of the individual alloys can be tuned to obtain enhanced properties.
