Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense nanoparticle-nanosheet array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:Highly active, durable, and inexpensive nanostructured catalysts are crucial for achieving efficient and economical electrochemical water splitting. However, developing efficient approaches to further improve the catalytic ability of the well-defined nanostructured catalysts is still a big challenge. Herein, we report a facile and universal cation-exchange process for synthesizing Fe-doped Ni(OH)2 and Co(OH)2 nanosheets with enriched active sites toward enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Abstract:To design highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a great challenge for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we report the preparation of hierarchical Fe-doped NiOx nanotubes assembled from ultrathin nanosheets with a thickness of 2.4nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy investigations have been suggested that the incorporation of Fe results in abundant trivalent nickel and nickel vacancies. Benefitting from their unique geometric and electronic structure, the as-prepared hierarchical Fe-doped NiOx nanotubes exhibit outstanding OER activity and stability, with overpotential of 310mV and a small Tafel slope of ~ 49mVdec−1 at 10mAcm−2.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide (CoO) nanosheets with a size of about 2.7 nm are prepared. The proper annealing temperatures (200 °C–400 °C) are used to control the conversion of CoO nanosheets to high-ratio hexagonal phases from high-ratio cubic phases at room temperature. The analysis revealed the hexagonal phase is preferable to cubic phase for oxygen evolution reaction of CoO nanosheets. The ultrafine CoO nanosheets with high-ratio hexagonal phases showed a particularly high mass activity of 5597Ag−1 at 1.615 V, 22.8 times higher than that of the noble metal Ru cluster electrocatalyst. Our study indicates an effective way to synthesize nanosheet catalysts with high mass activity.

Abstract:Promoting the formation of high-oxidation-state transition metal species in a hydroxide catalyst may improve its catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction, which remains difficult to achieve with current synthetic strategies. Herein, we present a synthesis of single-layer NiFeB hydroxide nanosheets and demonstrate the efficacy of electron-deficient boron in promoting the formation of high-oxidation-state Ni for improved oxygen evolution activity. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical analyses show that incorporation of B into a NiFe hydroxide causes a cathodic shift of the Ni 2+ (OH) 2 → Ni 3+δ OOH transition potential. Density functional theory calculations suggest an elevated oxidation state for Ni and decreased energy barriers for the reaction with the NiFeB hydroxide catalyst. Consequently, a current density of 100 mA cm –2 was achieved in 1 M KOH at an overpotential of 252 mV, placing it among the best Ni-based catalysts for this reaction. This work opens new opportunities in electronic engineering of metal hydroxides (or oxides) for efficient oxygen evolution in water-splitting applications.

Abstract:Designing efficient and non-precious electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was essential for renewable energy field, and the catalyst with composition gradient has emerged as a new dimension in improving the catalytic performance. Herein, a simple construction strategy was adopted to design the NiFe hydroxide nanosheet arrays with composition gradient for efficient oxygen evolution. The continuous gradient changes constructed efficient electron transmission channels and modified the NiOOH local electronic environment which optimized binding strength to oxygen evolution intermediates. Subsequently, the gradient varying NiFe hydroxide nanosheets array exhibited a low overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 63.6 mV·dec−1 in alkaline media. In the meantime, it showed remarkable long-term stability and maintained the nanosheet arrays morphology with no significant degeneration of electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Owing to the high demand for clean and renewable energy technologies, several studies have focused on developing economically feasible, highly effective, and stable non-precious electrocatalysts for promoting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This development has stimulated an expansion of investigative quests and indicated the importance of advancing electrocatalytic research in this field. Through a facile and efficient method, Ni nanoparticles were uniformly embedded into nanoporous carbon nanorods (Ni-NCN), which are subsequently electrodeposited on CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets to produce highly efficient Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH composites used for OER. The composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward OER owing to its low overpotential (ƞ10 mA = 280 mV), small Tafel slope (42 mV dec-1), and excellent durability. The Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH catalyst exhibited higher OER activity owing to its uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles, large specific surface area, enhanced electron transport, and synergistic effect of multiple composites. Additionally, the enhanced synergistic effect of Ni-NCN promoted higher OER performance compared with Ni-undoped carbon nanorod/LDH, indicating that the Ni dopant and LDH significantly contributed to the overall OER performance. The synergistic effect of multiple composites significantly contributed to the excellent OER performance, indicating their potential as OER catalyst.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrolytic water splitting. It is urgent to explore highly active non-precious metal OER catalysts. Herein, the etching combined with the electrodeposition was used to synthesize the efficient Ni–Fe/p-CoAl catalyst, which exhibits ideal OER performance. A low overpotential of 282 mV and 296 mV are needed to achieve the current density of 50 mA/cm 2 and 100 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst shows good durability with no detectable degradation during long-term operation. The enhanced OER performance can be attributed to the large electrochemical surface area and the strong interaction between Ni–Fe nanosheets and active substrate.

Abstract:The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the overall water splitting. Herein, we prepared a highly exposed NiFeOx ultra-small nanoclus-ters supported on boron-doped carbon nonotubes catalyst, which achieves a 10 mA/cm2 anodic current density at a low overpotential of 213 mV and the Tafel slope of 52 mV/dec in 1.0 mol/L KOH, superior to the pristine NiFeOx-CNTs and other state-of-the-art OER catalysts in alkaline media. A combination study (XPS, sXAS and XAFS) verifies that the local atomic structure of Ni and Fe atoms in the nanoclusters are similar to NiO and Fe2O3, respectively, and the B atoms which are doped into the crystal lattice of CNTs leads to the optimization of Ni 3d eg orbitals. Furthermore, in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopies reveal that the high valence state of Ni atoms are served as the real active sites. Abstract:Ni- and Co-based (oxy)hydroxides are promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their limited specific surface area and poor intrinsic conductivity lead to unsatisfied OER activity. Herein, a unique and universal self-template strategy has been developed to fabricate Fe-incorporated CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (Fe-CoNi-OH) nanosheet-assembled nanorod arrays toward OER. The reorganized nanosheet-assembled nanorod hierarchical structure induced by Fe incorporation exposes more active sites and facilitates mass transfer. Furthermore, Fe incorporation modifies the electron structure of CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (CoNi-OH), and enhances its electronic conductivity for rapid electron transport, thus intrinsically enhancing the OER activity. Consequently, the Fe-CoNi-OH possesses excellent OER activity with low overpotentials of 210, 248, 304, and 349 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, along with a very small Tafel slope of 28.0 mV dec−1, which are superior to the CoNi-OH and benchmark RuO2. By paring the Fe-CoNi-OH anode with a CoP cathode, an outstanding alkaline electrolyzer has been constructed, which only requires cell voltages of 1.506 and 1.623 V to deliver current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and can stably work for 100 h. This work provides a universal strategy to synthesize Fe-containing hierarchical nanostructured catalysts for energy conversion application.

Abstract:Development of efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for future renewable energy applications. Herein, efficient OER electrocatalysts based on iron hydroxide-modified nickel hydroxylphosphate (NiPO/Fe(OH) x) single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) have been prepared by a facile stepwise surfactant-free solvothermal strategy, which possess diameters of about 6 nm and lengths of about several micrometers. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between iron hydroxides and NiPO SWNTs, the as-prepared NiPO/Fe(OH) x SWNTs exhibit higher OER activity than primary NiPO SWNTs. Furthermore, the OER activity with different Fe contents displays a volcano-type shape, and the optimized NiPO/Fe(OH) x SWNTs present excellent activity with a low overpotential of 248 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and 323 mV to achieve a large current density of 100 mA cm-2, as well as a remarkably low Tafel slope of 45.4 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. The present work provides valuable insights to improve the OER performance by rational surface modification.

Abstract:Improvement of the low-cost transition metal electrocatalyst used in sluggish oxygen evolution reaction is a significant but challenging problem. In this study, ultrafine Fe-modulated Ni nanoparticles embedded in a porous Ni-doped carbon matrix were produced by the pyrolysis of zirconium metal-organic-frameworks, in which 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate operating as a ligand can coordinate with Ni2+ and Fe3+. This strategy allows formation of Fe-modulated Ni nanoparticles with a uniform dimension of about 2 nm which can be ascribed to the spatial blocking effect of ZrO2. This unique catalyst displays an efficient oxygen evolution reaction electro-catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 372 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 84.4 mV·dec−1 in alkaline media. More importantly, it shows superior durability and structural stability after 43 h in a chronoamperometry test. Meanwhile, it shows excellent cycling stability during 4000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. This research offers a new insight into the construction of uniform nanoscale transition metals and their alloys as highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Cu-doped NiFe-LDH nanosheets are synthesized by the cation exchange reaction between iron and copper ions. By this method, we successfully obtain defect-enriched, ultra-lightweight NiFe-LDH|Cu with a rough surface. Abstract:NiFe2O4 has emerged as an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, with outstanding stability in alkaline media and excellent redox properties. In order to further improve the catalytic performance, thinly-walled NiFe2O4 nanotubes (NiFe2O4-NTs), efficiently derivable from Ni, Fe, N-codoped carbon nanofibers, were innovatively synthesized through a sequential route combing hydrothermal, electrospinning, and high-temperature sintering in this work. The NiFe2O4-NTs possess large diameter of around 120 nm and their thickness of the tube wall is only about 10 nm. The surface properties of NiFe2O4 can be adjusted by forming the Ni-N/Fe-N bonds. Excitingly, largely exposed active surface area and boosted catalytic reaction kinetics toward oxygen evolution reaction are realized. The required overpotential to deliver 10 mA cm-2 is only 331 mV, accompanied with favorable Tafel slope of only 51.8 mV dec-1, small charge transfer resistance, and superior reaction stability.

Abstract:Nickel/iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was hindered insufficient active sites, low inherent conductivity and poor stability. Herein, we innovatively report a facile and costeffective in situ synthesis strategy to prepare ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets coupled onto hierarchical nano carbon networks consisting of carbon nanotube and graphene nanoribbon (NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR) forming a porous interconnected nanocomposite. Partial unzipping of CNT induced by strong oxidation leads to the creation of GNR nanolayers tightly attached to the retained CNT framework, where GNR achieves high surface areas to load NiFe-LDH nanosheets and inner CNT still enables high conductivity. The CNT@GNR nanocarbon network not only enhances accessible electrochemical active area and mass transfer, but also provides high-efficiency conductive brackets with interlinked electron transfer pathways and achieve the strong interface coupling with NiFe-LDH nanosheets, synergistically resulting in rapid electrocatalytic kinetics. Moreover, NiFe-LDH nanosheets are tightly anchored on the surface of nanocarbon networks, greatly enhanced the stability of NiFe-LDH. NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR exhibits remarkable OER activity with a low overpotential of 261 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), Tafel slope of 78 mV dec(-1), and high stability for up to 17 h, superior to most LDH-based OER catalysts reported, and even better than commercial RuO2. Therefore, the facile synthesis and excellent hierarchical architecture endow NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR nanocomposites as advanced electrocatalysts for outstanding OER performance. Most importantly, the design provides a simple but universal strategy to yield high performance of NiFe-LDH catalysts, facilitating the commercial process of non-noble catalysts for OER.
