Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrolytic water splitting. It is urgent to explore highly active non-precious metal OER catalysts. Herein, the etching combined with the electrodeposition was used to synthesize the efficient Ni–Fe/p-CoAl catalyst, which exhibits ideal OER performance. A low overpotential of 282 mV and 296 mV are needed to achieve the current density of 50 mA/cm 2 and 100 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst shows good durability with no detectable degradation during long-term operation. The enhanced OER performance can be attributed to the large electrochemical surface area and the strong interaction between Ni–Fe nanosheets and active substrate.

Porous Nanosheet Composite with Multi-Type Active Centers As an Efficient and Stable Oxygen Electrocatalyst in Alkaline and Acid Conditions

Abstract:The reversible oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are proton-coupled/decoupled four-electron reactions requiring multi-type active centers for catalysis. Herein, porous nanosheets codoped with a carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloy, metal-N species, and N defects (FeNi-N/PCN) were synthesized through a facile and environmentally friendly molten NaCl template method. The obtained FeNi-N/PCN achieved impressive performances as an oxygen electrocatalyst for the ORR and OER in alkaline (E1/2 of 0.88 VRHE, Ej=10 of 1.57 VRHE) and acidic electrolytes (E1/2 of 0.78 VRHE, Ej=10 of 1.76 VRHE). Furthermore, this FeNi-N/PCN catalyst achieved an impressive power density of 224 mW cm−2 and a specific capacity of 691 mA h g−1 in a Zn-air battery, which are 1.34- and 1.20-fold higher than that of the Pt and RuO2 catalysts, respectively. These outstanding performances are due to the layered carbon nanosheet with multi-type active sites, including a carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloy, N defects, and metal-N sites (M-Nx).
Nanostructured Co 3 O 4 @NiFe-LDH Heterojunction Catalysts for Improving Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Environment

Abstract:Constructing nano-heterojunction catalysts is a highly efficient method for enhancing the thermodynamics and kinetics towards oxygen evolution reaction. In the present study, NiFe-LDH nanoparticles in-situ grown on Co 3 O 4 nanowires bring about abundant heterogeneous interfaces, which productively increase specific surface area and tune electron density distribution. The as-obtained composite comprises rich unsaturated Co sites on Co 3 O 4 and hybrid crystalline/amorphous NiFe-LDH phase, both of which expedite the flow of charge and expose large amounts of active sites. The Co-Ni-Fe electron transport channels are established at the core-shell heterojunction with the transmission of electrons from Co 3 O 4 to NiFe-LDH. The resultant optimal Co 3 O 4 @NiFe-LDH/NF-100 catalyst displayed attractive OER activity with low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm −2 , along with excellent durability in alkaline media. This typical core-shell heterojunction promotes H 2 O dissociation and strengthens the adsorption of intermediates, thereby enhancing oxygen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Corrosion engineered 1‐nm‐thick amorphous cobalt‐iron hydroxide nanosheets in situ grown on NiFe foam for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction: in situ Raman spectroscopy unraveling the dynamic reconstruction of active Co(IV)‐O sites and DFT calculation underscoring the supporting effect of the NiFe substrate in enhancing the electrode's OER activity. Highly‐efficient and cost‐effective electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for advancing sustainable energy technologies. Herein, a novel approach leveraging corrosion engineering is presented to facilitate the in situ growth of amorphous cobalt‐iron hydroxides on nickel‐iron foam (CoFe(OH)x‐m/NFF) within a NaCl‐CoCl2 aqueous solution. By adjusting the concentration of the solution, the compositions can tailored and morphologies of these hydroxides to optimize the OER electrocatalytic performance. Specifically, the CoFe(OH)x‐500/NFF electrode manifests as distinctive 3D flower‐like clusters composed of remarkably thin nanosheets, measuring a mere 1 nm in thickness. By virtue of the amorphous and ultrathin nanosheet structure, the CoFe(OH)x‐500/NFF electrode exhibits superior OER activity, characterized by notably low overpotentials (η100, 274 mV) and an exceptionally small Tafel slope of 40.54 mV dec−1. Moreover, the electrode's performance remains robust, maintaining low overpotentials for 168 h at 100 mA cm−2. In situ Raman spectroscopy indicates that the hydroxides experience surface structural reconstruction and transform into high‐valent CoFeO2 with active Co(IV)‐O sites during the OER. Theoretical calculations underscore the critical role of the NiFe substrate in enhancing the electrode's OER activity by improving electrical conductivity and modifying the adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, thereby reducing the energy barrier for the reaction.

Abstract:It is still challenging to develop highly efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction due to their sluggish kinetics for water splitting. To address such issue, herein, for the first time, self-assembled three-dimensional porous nanoarchitecture, constructed by ultrathin cobalt-nickel-boron oxide (NiCoBOx) nanosheets, is synthesized by a facile borohydride/amine hydrolysis strategy. As an oxygen evolution electrocatalyst, the NiCoBOx nanoarchitecture delivers excellent performance with a very low overpotential of 290 mV to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 59.2 mV dec(-1) in an alkaline medium, which is analogous to the performance of RuO2. Moreover, it shows outstanding physiochemical long-term stability with excellent current density retention even after 70 h. Its OER performance is reassessed to the benchmark catalyst and practically very virtuous within most reported Ni/Co-based OER electrocatalysts. The rationally designed 3D porous nanoarchitecture of borate anchored ultrathin NiCoOx nanosheets (NiCoB)-O-x favours the transportation of electrons and diffusion of ions during catalysis process, thus significantly enhancing its catalytic activity. This work provides a facile and low-cost synthesis strategy to fabricate 3D porous electrocatalyst with rational nanoarchitecture for highly efficient and stable OER. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Co-based electrocatalysts are among of the most effective oxygen evolution reaction catalysts at present, but their overpotentials and stability are still not satisfactory. Herein, we successfully fabricated self -sup-ported N plasma assisted Fe doped NiCo nanosheets (denoted as N-NiCoFe) electrode by using corrosion engineering and N plasma assisted Fe ion doping. Under the action of high-energy N plasma, the surface of catalyst generated more vacancies and promoted the doping of Fe ions, which improve the oxygen evolution reaction activity. In particular, the optimal electrocatalytic activity with low overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 260 mV at 100 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, small Tafel slope of 27.3 mV center dot dec-1 and only a slight decay after-200 h.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:A lamellar reverse micelle directed assembly strategy was proposed to integrate NiCo layered hydroxides (NiCoDH) nanodots and NiCo sulfide (NiCoS) nanosheets (NiCoDH/NiCoS) by one-step solvothermal method. The NiCoDH/NiCoS features with an interconnected 3D architecture composed of ultrathin amorphous NiCoS nanosheets (similar to 1.5 nm), decorated by ultra-small NiCoDH nanodots (2-3 nm). The optimal NiCoDH/NiCoS exhibits a low overpotential of 303 mV at current density of 20 mA cm(-2), together with a small Tafel slope of 77.6 mV dec(-1), the high Faraday efficiency of about 95% as well as good stability. The excellent OER performance and enhanced stability should be ascribed to the strong interface-coupling of NiCoDH nanodots/NiCoS nanosheets, highly synergistic effect of bimetal Co and Ni, amorphous-like structure to expose more active sites, and interconnected 3D architecture for effective mass transport and structural stability. This work provides a significant insight regarding the strong interface-coupling effect on OER electrocatalysis, and offers a new strategy to design highly efficient OER catalysts. Abstract:This study provides a unique method for the rapid deposition of amorphous Co-B nanosheets on Ni foam (Co-B/NF) by alternatively dipping Ni foam into cobalt salt and borohydride solutions. The as-prepared Co-B/NF can act as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst affords a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) at 265 mV overpotential during the OER in 1.0 M KOH solution, ranking it among the best reported nonprecious OER electrocatalysts. This strategy for constructing electrocatalysis electrodes prevails over the conventional method of drop-coating metal boride dispersions on the electrode, having better intrinsic stability and fully exposed active site surfaces. Given the low cost, ease of fabrication, good controllability, and high OER electrocatalytic activity and stability, Co-B/NF has great potential as a high-performance anode catalyst for water splitting.

Abstract:The preparation approaches of highly efficient FeNi (oxy)hydroxide electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are usually complicated and high cost. Here, we develop a simple and cost-effective corrosion method to in situ fabricate the amorphous FeNi (oxy)hydroxides with an optimal Fe/Ni atomic ratio as highly efficient OER electrocatalysts. The corrosion process took place in a HCl solution at room temperature, which simultaneously changed the chemistry and morphology of the FeNi (oxy)hydroxide electrocatalysts. The as-fabricated amorphous FeNi (oxy)hydroxide nanosheets exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance in the alkaline OER process with a low overpotential of 231 mV at a current density of 20 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 62.9 mV dec–1, and long-term (more than 60 h) durability, which is superior to most electrocatalysts reported and the commercial catalyst IrO2. Abstract:Cobalt oxide (CoO) nanosheets with a size of about 2.7 nm are prepared. The proper annealing temperatures (200 °C–400 °C) are used to control the conversion of CoO nanosheets to high-ratio hexagonal phases from high-ratio cubic phases at room temperature. The analysis revealed the hexagonal phase is preferable to cubic phase for oxygen evolution reaction of CoO nanosheets. The ultrafine CoO nanosheets with high-ratio hexagonal phases showed a particularly high mass activity of 5597Ag−1 at 1.615 V, 22.8 times higher than that of the noble metal Ru cluster electrocatalyst. Our study indicates an effective way to synthesize nanosheet catalysts with high mass activity.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key process involved in energy and environment‐related technologies. An ideal OER electrocatalyst should show high exposure of active sites and optimal adsorption energies of oxygenated species. However, earth‐abundant transition‐metal‐based OER electrocatalysts still operate with sluggish OER kinetics. Here, a cation‐exchange route is reported to fabricate cobalt‐vanadium‐iron (oxy)hydroxide (CoV‐Fe0.28) nanosheets with tunable binding energies for the oxygenated intermediates. The formation of an amorphous/crystalline heterostructure in the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst boosts the exposure of active sites compared to their crystalline and amorphous counterparts. Furthermore, the synergetic interaction of Co, V, and Fe cations in the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst subtly regulates the local coordination environment and electronic structure, resulting in the optimal thermodynamic barrier for this elementary reaction step. As a result, the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward the OER. A low overpotential of 215 mV is required to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 39.1 mV dec−1, which outperforms commercial RuO2 (321 mV and 86.2 mV dec−1, respectively).

Abstract:Nickel-iron oxyhydroxide (Ni1-xFexOOH) is well recognized as the best-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst in alkaline electrolytes, however its analogue cobalt-iron oxyhydroxide (Co1-xFexOOH) is surprisingly less explored despite their structural similarity. Inspired by our recent study on high-performance HER catalyst using the nanostructured CoMoO4 center dot nH(2)O precursor, herein, we report a facile synthesis of Co1-xFexOOH catalyst derived from the same precursor and its excellent electrocatalytic properties towards the OER in alkaline electrolytes. A core-shell structured nanocatalyst consisting of disordered Co1-xFexOOH layer over the surface of crystalline CoMoO4 center dot nH(2)O nanosheets was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method followed by anodic electrooxidation. Thus-prepared catalyst exhibited extraordinarily high and stable activity towards the OER in alkaline electrolyte, which outperformed most Co-based OER catalysts. Combined with the HER catalyst derived from the same CoMoO4 center dot nH(2)O precursor as the cathode, we further developed and tested a simple water-splitting cell, which significantly surpasses the benchmarking IrO2-Pt/C couple (1.63 V) and requires a voltage of only 1.517 V to afford 10 mA cm(-2) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Amorphous CoV Phosphate Nanosheets as Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for hydrogen production. However, OER with four-electron transfer requires electrocatalysts to speed up its sluggish kinetics in alkaline solutions. Herein, amorphous CoV phosphate (denoted as CoV-Pi) nanosheets synthesized by a straightforward one-step hydrothermal approach is reported, which provide a low overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a small Tafel slope down to 48.8 mV dec-1 and long-term durability over 80 h. The efficient activity is ascribed to the amorphous nanosheets structure, high electrochemically active surface area, enhanced surface wettability and the synergistic effect of the active metal atoms. This study significantly indicates that CoV-Pi is a promising alternative to replace expensive noble metal-based catalysts for electrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:One crucial pattern to vigorously develop renewable energy is to exploit high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Therefore, we constructed a nanoscale heterogeneous structure catalyst, NiFe-LDH/Co-NC (LDH = layered double hydroxide; Co-NC cobalt nanocrystal), consisting of ultrasmall NiFe-LDH nanosheets and Co-NC matrixes carbonized from ZIF-67. In 1 M KOH, NiFe-LDH/Co-NC-2 requires only an overpotential of 282 mV to catalyze a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and also has a Tafel slope of 64 mV dec–1, surpassing those of the typical OER electrocatalyst RuO2. Co-NC was able to supply a porous structure and anchoring sites, including improving the electrical conductivity of NiFe-LDH. Modified NiFe-LDH has a highly dispersed nature and therefore exposes more active sites. Moreover, the accelerated electron-transfer process caused by strong interaction between NiFe-LDH and Co-NC dramatically optimized the energy barrier of the OER. This work provides significant guidelines to design a high-performance OER of NiFe-LDH catalysts.

Abstract:Highly active and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts have become essential to replace commercial electrocatalysts that rely on rare noble metals. High-entropy sulfide nanomaterials, characterized by abundant randomly distributed elements and inherent stability, possess significant potential for applications. However, challenges such as uneven composition, partial oxidation, or imprecise synthesis control still remain in the materials preparation. Herein, a simple and effective two-step hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize NiCoFeCuS nanoparticles supported on foam nickel substrate. With the catalytic active sites produced by electron density redistribution in high-entropy and sulfurization, NiCoFeCuS exhibits excellent alkaline OER performance, with an overpotential of 261 mV and a Tafel slope of 57.97 mV dec(-1) at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is only 88% of commercial RuO2 without any noble metals. The strong coupling between carbon and CoCr2 O4 has improved the electrical conductivity and preserved the active sites in catalysts. These results may pave the way to improve the performance of spinel oxides as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions.

Abstract:The preparation of low-cost and high-activity oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is a technical bottleneck in the field of electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. Amorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with low-cost transition metals have attracted increasing attention in the catalytic field, yet the metal atoms that are the main active sites are still ambiguous. Here, we synthesized a series of amorphous ternary Fex(NiCu)3-x-MOFs via ultrasonic method. The optimal amorphous FeNiCu-MOF is found to be able to supply a current density of 10 mA cm-2 merely at a low overpotential of 260 mV with a small Tafel slope of 61 mV dec-1 and exhibits high durability over 24 h. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the Fe atoms are the main active sites for OER in FeNiCu-MOF. This work shows that amorphous ternary MOFs have great potential for application in OER electrocatalysts due to the multiple synergistic effect and amorphous MOFs structure.

Three-dimensional VOx/NiS/NF Nanosheets As Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Developing effective and robust electrocatalysts that are applicable for intense conditions is promising for variable industrial oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we have developed a simple hydrothermal strategy to construct a three dimensional nanoflower-like VOx nanosheets (VOx/NiS/NF) that utilizes S-modified NF as substrate. NiS/NF can provide not only high-surface area for the growth of VOx but also better conductivity and stability derived from NiS. XRD shows the formation of amorphous VOx supported on NiS/NF. XPS confirms the existence and valence state of V, Ni and S. EDX and SEM elemental mapping reveal the composition and great distribution of V, O, Ni and S. SEM and TEM show that the thin VOx nanosheets covered on the surface of NiS/NF uniformly, which implying more exposed active sites. OER measurements display that VOx/NiS/NF has the outstanding catalytic activity with the lower overpotential (330 mV, 50 mA cm(-2)), smaller tafel slope (121 mV dec(-1)) and lower value of semicircle of EIS than VOx/NF. The modification of NF may be the key for enhancement performances for OER due to reduced charge transfer resistance. The strong durability of VOx/NiS/NF may be attributed to the tighter integration between VOx and NiS/NF in alkaline electrolytes. The impressive results may provide a new strategy to design suitable substrate with good dispersion and conductivity to prepare effective electrocatalysts for OER. Abstract:Groping for catalysts with outstanding activity and durability is of significance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We have fabricated a self-supporting electrode by decorating CeO2 on Co-Mn-S nanosheets grown on nickel foam (CeO2/Co-Mn-S/NF). As-prepared material shows preeminent electrocatalytic activity toward OER, with minor overpotential (239 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and Tafel slope (93.2 mV dec−1). Particularly, CeO2/Co-Mn-S/NF exhibits small charge transfer resistance, revealing quick Faradic process and favorable OER kinetics. Moreover, during uninterrupted water oxidation process, CeO2/Co-Mn-S/NF remains long-term stability. The strategy of decorating CeO2 on Co-Mn-S nanosheets opens a new perspective for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts toward OER.
