Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. Abstract:In this paper, the electrocatalytic efficiency of bi-metallic organic framework compounds grown on nickel foam (NF) has been enhanced by adjusting the amount of iron and cobalt precursors. A unique wedge-like morphology was observed in Fe-1-Co-1-MOF. The optimized Fe-1-Co-1-MOF (1:1 of molar ratio of iron to cobalt) exhibits superior catalytic activity to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a lowest overpotential of only 233 mV at a current density of 10 mA.cm(-2) and the higher current density of 400 mA.cm(-2) can be provided at overpotential of 264 mV. The Tafel slope in alkaline aqueous solutions was 24.4 mV.dec(-1). After 10 h of continuous operation, the catalyst showed only a slight loss of current density at 50 mA.cm(-2). This success may be attributed to synergy between the bi-metallic organic framework catalyst and the large pores of conductive nickel foam, as well as the synergistic effect between the two phases molecules of the bi-metallic organic framework metal. Three-Dimensional Ni Foam-Supported CoO Nanoparticles/N-Doped Carbon Multilayer Nanocomposite Electrode for Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Metal-organic complex (MOC) multilayers are, for the first time, conformally constructed on Ni foam (NF) via a three-component sequential layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach and converted to three-dimensional (3-D) NF-supported interconnected CoO nanoparticles (NPs)/N-doped carbon nanohybrid multilayers via calcination. The obtained nanoarchitecture delivers an overpotential of 318 mV to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec(-1). This activity is superior to most reported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and even much better than those of Ir- and Ru-based ones measured under the same conditions (0.1 M KOH). Additionally, this electrode undergoes negligible potential and current change after 19.8 h chronopotentiometric measurement and 300 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the ultrasmall and high-density CoO NPs embedded in Ndoped carbon uniformly assembled on the 3-D substrate significantly increasing electrochemically accessible active sites and durability and the N-doped carbon greatly promoting intrinsic activity of CoO. This work not only creates 3-D highly tunable networked nanostructured electrodes with excellent durability for high-efficiency electrocatalysis but also develops a facile, economical, and extremely versatile strategy to controllably self-assemble conformal MOC-based multilayers with multifunctionality and superior performance on essentially any substrate at the molecular level for broad applications.
Nanoarchitectonics of Fe-Doped Ni3S2 Arrays on Ni Foam from MOF Precursors for Promoted Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical half-reaction in electrochemical overall water splitting and metal-air battery fields; however, the exploitation of the high activity of non-noble metal electrocatalysts to promote the intrinsic slow kinetics of OER is a vital and urgent research topic. Herein, Fe-doped Ni3S2 arrays were derived from MOF precursors and directly grown on nickel foam via the traditional solvothermal way. The arrays integrated into nickel foam can be used as self-supported electrodes directly without any adhesive. Due to the synergistic effect of Fe and Ni elements in the Ni3S2 structure, the optimized Fe2.3%-Ni3S2/NF electrode delivers excellent OER activity in an alkaline medium. The optimized electrode only requires a small overpotential of 233 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2, and the catalytic activity of the electrode can surpass several related electrodes reported in the literature. In addition, the long-term stability of the Fe2.3%-Ni3S2/NF electrode showed no significant attenuation after 12 h of testing at a current density of 50 mA cm-2. The introduction of Fe ions could modulate the electrical conductivity and morphology of the Ni3S2 structure and thus provide a high electrochemically active area, fast reaction sites, and charge transfer rate for OER activity.

Abstract:The combination of highly active materials with judicious nanostructures is crucial to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which involves sluggish multistep electron transfer processes. Herein, TiN nanowire arrays are used as conductive trunks to support active Ni-doped Co3O4 (Ni0.27Co2.73O4) nanosheets to construct a binder-free three-dimensional (3D) electrode for OER. In the core@shell configuration, the TiN nanowire arrays possess a single-crystal-like structure favoring charge migration and the ultrathin Ni0.27Co2.73O4 nanosheets have a mesoporous structure providing more active sites. The hierarchically branched morphology, high conductivity and large surface area can be achieved simultaneously by the optimization in composition and nanostructure, which contributes to excellent electrochemical performances. The TiN@Ni0.27Co2.73O4 electrode shows much better OER activity than the Ni-doped Co3O4 nanosheets deposited on planar Ti substrate and low conductive TiO2 nanowire arrays. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Highly active and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a vital role in water splitting. Despite numerous efforts, the strategies to prepare durable and effective electrocatalysts via scalable methods still remain a great challenge. In this work, we fabricated Fe-doped Ni(OH)(2) ultrathin nanosheets (Fe-Ni-OH/Ni) via autologous growing of Ni(OH)(2) from Ni foam, and in situ electrochemical-assisted doping Fe into Ni(OH)(2). Benefiting from the unique structure with large surface areas and strong coupling effects between Fe and Ni, the optimal Fe-Ni-OH electrodes exhibit remarkable catalytic performance toward OER, which requires an overpotential of 220 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a Tafel slope of 48.3 mV dec(-2). The Fe-Ni-OH electrodes also possess high stability even under a high current density of 500 mA cm(-2) for 600 h with an ultralow overpotential of 290 mV. Using Ni-Fe-OH electrodes as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting, only a small overpotential of 1.57 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2). Moreover, the high catalytic performance and scalable preparation method can meet the emergency needs for the practical application. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:Development of highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgently demanded by the clean hydrogen energy. Herein, in order to further boost the OER activity of metal nitrate hydroxide materials, amorphous Fe(OH)(3) layer is in situ grown on nickel nitrate hydroxide (NiNH) nanoarrays supported on nickel foam (NF) through an interfacial hydrolysis approach, where the loading amount of the Fe(OH)(3) can be simply manipulated by the hydrolysis time. Taking advantage of the synergy of Fe(OH)(3) and NiNH, the optimized Fe(OH)(3)@NiNH/NF sample shows a very promising electrocatalytic OER activity in 1 M KOH solution, requiring a very low overpotential of 212 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) to deliver a geometrical catalytic current density of 100 mA cm(-2) and a low Tafel slope of 49 mV dec(-1). This work provides a new strategy for boosting the electrocatalytic activity of metal hydroxide nitrates through the interface engineering.

Abstract:This study provides a unique method for the rapid deposition of amorphous Co-B nanosheets on Ni foam (Co-B/NF) by alternatively dipping Ni foam into cobalt salt and borohydride solutions. The as-prepared Co-B/NF can act as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst affords a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) at 265 mV overpotential during the OER in 1.0 M KOH solution, ranking it among the best reported nonprecious OER electrocatalysts. This strategy for constructing electrocatalysis electrodes prevails over the conventional method of drop-coating metal boride dispersions on the electrode, having better intrinsic stability and fully exposed active site surfaces. Given the low cost, ease of fabrication, good controllability, and high OER electrocatalytic activity and stability, Co-B/NF has great potential as a high-performance anode catalyst for water splitting.
Co3O4 Nanosheet Arrays on Ni Foam As Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Co3O4 nanosheet arrays on Ni foam (Co3O4 NS/NF) were designed, fabricated, and utilized as electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrocatalytic performance of the Co3O4 NS/NF for OER was systematically evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, linear polarization, and Tafel curve measurements. Compared to the bare Ni foam, free-standing Co3O4 nanosheets, and commercialized Pt/C electrodes, Co3O4 NS/NF exhibits excellent OER activity in water-alkaline electrolyte with low onset overpotential (~ 50 mV), large anodic current density, and excellent durability. The compatible electrocatalytic activity for OER of the Co3O4 NS/NF is attributed to the unique nanosheet structure and the interconnected nanoarrays configuration of Co3O4 that provides plentiful catalytic active sites, in addition to the inherent catalytic activity of Co3O4. The electron transportation capability of the supporter Ni foam makes the composite a potential electrocatalyst for OER.
Kinetically Controlled, Scalable Synthesis of γ-FeOOH Nanosheet Arrays on Nickel Foam toward Efficient Oxygen Evolution: The Key Role of In-Situ-Generated γ-NiOOH

Abstract:Layered γ-type iron oxyhydroxide (γ-FeOOH) is a promising material for various applications; however, its sheet-shaped structure often suffers from instability that results in aggregation and leads to inferior performance. Herein, a kinetically controlled hydrolysis strategy is proposed for the scalable synthesis of γ-FeOOH nanosheets arrays (NAs) with enhanced structural stability on diverse substrates at ambient conditions. The underlying mechanisms for the growth of γ-FeOOH NAs associated with their structural evolution are systematically elucidated by alkalinity-controlled synthesis and time-dependent experiments. As a proof-of-concept application, γ-FeOOH NAs are developed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where the sample grown on nickel foam (NF) exhibits superior performance of high catalytic current density, small Tafel slope, and exceptional durability, which is among the top level of FeOOH-based electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggest that γ-NiOOH in situ generated from the electrooxidation of NF would induce charge accumulation on the Fe sites of γ-FeOOH NAs, leading to enhanced OER intermediates adsorption for water splitting. This work affords a new technique to rationally design and synthesize γ-FeOOH NAs for various applications.

Abstract:Development of high-performance, high-stability and low-cost electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal to the water electrolysis at industrial current density. Herein, a novel Fe/Ni-based hierarchical structure was constructed with the assistance of 2D MXene, showing vertically aligned Ni(OH)2 nanosheets decorated with distinct Fe2O3 morphologies. The Fe2O3/Ni(OH)2/NF exhibited a remarkable OER activity and required only overpotentials of 291, 319 and 341 mV respectively at 500, 1000 and 1500 mA cm−2 in alkaline solution and drove the current density of 1300 mA cm−2 about 17 h at the potential of 1.64 V vs RHE. The Fe2O3/Ni(OH)2 precursor underwent in situ surface reconstitution into active FeOOH/NiOOH during alkaline OER. The outstanding performance of Fe2O3/Ni(OH)2/NF was attributable to the synergistic impact between FeOOH and NiOOH for regulating the optimal adsorption of OER intermediates. This work provides an ideal perspective to fabricate resource-rich, low-cost and high-activity FeNi-based electrode for alkaline OER at industrial current density.

Abstract:Ni- and Co-based (oxy)hydroxides are promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their limited specific surface area and poor intrinsic conductivity lead to unsatisfied OER activity. Herein, a unique and universal self-template strategy has been developed to fabricate Fe-incorporated CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (Fe-CoNi-OH) nanosheet-assembled nanorod arrays toward OER. The reorganized nanosheet-assembled nanorod hierarchical structure induced by Fe incorporation exposes more active sites and facilitates mass transfer. Furthermore, Fe incorporation modifies the electron structure of CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (CoNi-OH), and enhances its electronic conductivity for rapid electron transport, thus intrinsically enhancing the OER activity. Consequently, the Fe-CoNi-OH possesses excellent OER activity with low overpotentials of 210, 248, 304, and 349 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, along with a very small Tafel slope of 28.0 mV dec−1, which are superior to the CoNi-OH and benchmark RuO2. By paring the Fe-CoNi-OH anode with a CoP cathode, an outstanding alkaline electrolyzer has been constructed, which only requires cell voltages of 1.506 and 1.623 V to deliver current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and can stably work for 100 h. This work provides a universal strategy to synthesize Fe-containing hierarchical nanostructured catalysts for energy conversion application.

Abstract:Developing efficient transition metal oxide electrodes is essential to energy conversion and storage. In this work, flower-like FeCo2O4 nanosheets supported on Ni foam were synthesized by facile hydrothermal and calcination treatment. Various temperatures influence the morphologies and oxygen evolution reaction activities. Especially, FeCo2O4/NF-120 °C catalysts showed the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity due to the fact that 3D Ni foam provided good conductive substrate-forming FeCo2O4 nanosheets, which enhanced the electrochemical stability and facilitated the transport of electrolyte and release of oxygen. In addition, the synergistic effect between Fe and Co also enhanced active sites and promoted the OER catalytic performance. The flower-like FeCo2O4/Ni electrodes showed a low overpotential of 124 and 339 mV at the current density of 10 and 50 mA cm−2 for OER, respectively. Also, they displayed a low tafel slope of 43.78 mV dec−1 and good stability in alkaline electrolyte. This research could promote the design of low-cost electrocatalysts for OER.

Construction of Fe-doped Co3S4 nanosheets on Ni Foam as an efficient OER electrocatalyst

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a complex four-electron coupled process, which significantly impacts the efficiency of the electrocatalytic reaction. Design and preparation of cost-effective and binder-free OER electrocatalysts are essential to improving catalytic efficiency. In this paper, Fe-doped Co3S4 nanosheets have been directly deposited on nickel foam (NF) and applied to OER. Due to the synergy arising from the augmentation of active sites and charge transfer efficiency, Fe-Co3S4/NF exhibits excellent OER electrocatalytic activity. The overpotential of 242 mV and a Tafel slope of 50.5 mV dec−1 at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 was achieved in 1.0 M KOH solution, which was lower than commercial RuO2. Fe-Co3S4/NF electrode also exhibits long-term stability, maintaining a consistent current density over a 20-hour testing period. This makes Fe-Co3S4/NF electrode has potential utilization in industrial applications.
