Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense nanoparticle-nanosheet array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:Metal-organic complex (MOC) multilayers are, for the first time, conformally constructed on Ni foam (NF) via a three-component sequential layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach and converted to three-dimensional (3-D) NF-supported interconnected CoO nanoparticles (NPs)/N-doped carbon nanohybrid multilayers via calcination. The obtained nanoarchitecture delivers an overpotential of 318 mV to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec(-1). This activity is superior to most reported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and even much better than those of Ir- and Ru-based ones measured under the same conditions (0.1 M KOH). Additionally, this electrode undergoes negligible potential and current change after 19.8 h chronopotentiometric measurement and 300 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the ultrasmall and high-density CoO NPs embedded in Ndoped carbon uniformly assembled on the 3-D substrate significantly increasing electrochemically accessible active sites and durability and the N-doped carbon greatly promoting intrinsic activity of CoO. This work not only creates 3-D highly tunable networked nanostructured electrodes with excellent durability for high-efficiency electrocatalysis but also develops a facile, economical, and extremely versatile strategy to controllably self-assemble conformal MOC-based multilayers with multifunctionality and superior performance on essentially any substrate at the molecular level for broad applications.

Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.

Abstract:This study provides a unique method for the rapid deposition of amorphous Co-B nanosheets on Ni foam (Co-B/NF) by alternatively dipping Ni foam into cobalt salt and borohydride solutions. The as-prepared Co-B/NF can act as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst affords a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) at 265 mV overpotential during the OER in 1.0 M KOH solution, ranking it among the best reported nonprecious OER electrocatalysts. This strategy for constructing electrocatalysis electrodes prevails over the conventional method of drop-coating metal boride dispersions on the electrode, having better intrinsic stability and fully exposed active site surfaces. Given the low cost, ease of fabrication, good controllability, and high OER electrocatalytic activity and stability, Co-B/NF has great potential as a high-performance anode catalyst for water splitting.

Abstract:The development of earth–abundant and high–performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a very important part for electrochemical water splitting to generate cleanliness and renewable hydrogen. The preparation of heterogeneous nanostructure composite is an effective method to further improve the performance of noble–metal–free catalysts. Herein, heterogeneous nanostructure of Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF electrocatalyst for OER was fabricated by a hydrothermal method and the subsequent oxidation process. The as–prepared Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF presents a unique thin–wall cell structure. Benefiting from the thin–wall cell structure and the synergistic effect between Co3O4 and Fe2O3, as well as the three–dimensionally (3D) conductive feature of the substrate of nickel foam (NF), the Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF electrode demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity for OER in alkaline solution. The overpotential is 254 mV at 10 mA cm−2 current density, the Tafel slope is only 33 mV dec−1, and the electrode also retained good stability of 24 h at the current density of 20 mA cm−2. Compared with pristine Co3O4/Fe2O3 (η10 = 493 mV), Co3O4@NF (η10 = 350 mV) and Fe2O3@NF (η10 = 378 mV), the Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF electrode displayed obviously enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

Kinetically Controlled, Scalable Synthesis of γ-FeOOH Nanosheet Arrays on Nickel Foam toward Efficient Oxygen Evolution: The Key Role of In-Situ-Generated γ-NiOOH

Abstract:Layered γ-type iron oxyhydroxide (γ-FeOOH) is a promising material for various applications; however, its sheet-shaped structure often suffers from instability that results in aggregation and leads to inferior performance. Herein, a kinetically controlled hydrolysis strategy is proposed for the scalable synthesis of γ-FeOOH nanosheets arrays (NAs) with enhanced structural stability on diverse substrates at ambient conditions. The underlying mechanisms for the growth of γ-FeOOH NAs associated with their structural evolution are systematically elucidated by alkalinity-controlled synthesis and time-dependent experiments. As a proof-of-concept application, γ-FeOOH NAs are developed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where the sample grown on nickel foam (NF) exhibits superior performance of high catalytic current density, small Tafel slope, and exceptional durability, which is among the top level of FeOOH-based electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggest that γ-NiOOH in situ generated from the electrooxidation of NF would induce charge accumulation on the Fe sites of γ-FeOOH NAs, leading to enhanced OER intermediates adsorption for water splitting. This work affords a new technique to rationally design and synthesize γ-FeOOH NAs for various applications.

Abstract:Energy storage technologies are developed over the past decades, such as metal-air batteries. The large-scale application of these devices is finite due to slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In order to solve this issue, plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) is used to synthesize high performance nano-oxide (NiOx@Co3O4/CC) electrocatalyst for OER applications. Herein, the cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanowire arrays are grown on oxygen plasma-treated carbon-cloth (CC) and then a thin layer (~1.2 nm) of nickel oxide (NiOx) is deposited on the Co3O4/CC through PE-ALD method. The electrocatalyst of two transition metal oxides plays a leading role in improving the OER performance and stability. The overpotential for OER of NiOx@Co3O4/CC electrocatalyst is 360 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is much lower than that of Co3O4/CC (420 mV) and comparable to commercial RuO2 (350 mV) electrocatalyst. Moreover, the stability of NiOx@Co3O4/CC electrocatalyst is also improved, which only 8.85% of the initial current is loss after 40,000 s. It is demonstrated that PE-ALD synthesis method provides a facile approach to fabricate highly efficient nano-oxide electrocatalysts for OER in energy storage devices.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a complex four-electron coupled process, which significantly impacts the efficiency of the electrocatalytic reaction. Design and preparation of cost-effective and binder-free OER electrocatalysts are essential to improving catalytic efficiency. In this paper, Fe-doped Co3S4 nanosheets have been directly deposited on nickel foam (NF) and applied to OER. Due to the synergy arising from the augmentation of active sites and charge transfer efficiency, Fe-Co3S4/NF exhibits excellent OER electrocatalytic activity. The overpotential of 242 mV and a Tafel slope of 50.5 mV dec−1 at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 was achieved in 1.0 M KOH solution, which was lower than commercial RuO2. Fe-Co3S4/NF electrode also exhibits long-term stability, maintaining a consistent current density over a 20-hour testing period. This makes Fe-Co3S4/NF electrode has potential utilization in industrial applications.

Abstract:We recently reported that fear extinction, a form of inhibitory learning, is selectively blocked by systemic administration of L-type voltage-gated calcium channel (LVGCC) antagonists, including nifedipine, in mice. We here replicate this finding and examine three reduced contingency effects after vehicle or nifedipine (40 mg/kg) administration. In the first experiment, contingency reduction was achieved by adding USs to the training protocol (degraded contingency), a phenomenon thought to be independent of behavioral inhibition. In the second experiment, contingency reduction was achieved by varying the percentage of CS-US pairing, a phenomenon thought to be weakly dependent on behavioral inhibition. In the third and fourth experiments, contingency reduction was achieved by adding CSs to the training protocol (partial reinforcement), a phenomenon thought to be completely dependent on behavioral inhibition. We found that none of these reduced contingency effects was impaired by nifedipine. In a final experiment, we found that extinction conducted 1 or 3 h post-acquisition, but not immediately, was LVGCC-dependent. Taken together, the results suggest that reduced contingency effects and extinction depend on different molecular mechanisms and that LVGCC dependence of behavioral inhibition develops with time after associative CS-US learning.
Cobalt-Iron Oxide Nanoarrays Supported on Carbon Fiber Paper with High Stability for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution at Large Current Densities

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate that nonprecious CoFe-based oxide nanoarrays exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity and superior stability for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at large current densities (>500 mA cm-2). Carbon fiber paper (CFP) with three-dimensional macroporous structure, excellent corrosion resistance, and high electrical properties is used as the support material to prevent surface passivation during the long-term process of OER. Through a facile method of hydrothermal synthesis and thermal treatment, vertically aligned arrays of spinel Co xFe3- xO4 nanostructures are homogeneously grown on CFP. The morphology and the Fe-doping content of the CoFe oxide nanoarrays can be controlled by the Fe3+ concentration in the precursor solution. The arrays of CoFe oxide nanosheets (NSs) grown on CFP (Co2.3Fe0.7O4-NSs/CFP) deliver lower Tafel slope (34.3 mV dec-1) than CoFe oxide nanowire (NW) arrays grown on CFP (Co2.7Fe0.3O4-NWs/CFP) in alkaline solution, owing to higher Fe-doping content and larger effective specific surface area. The Co2.3Fe0.7O4-NSs/CFP electrode exhibits excellent stability for OER at large current densities in alkaline solution. Moreover, the morphology and structure of CoFeO nanoarrays are well preserved after long-term testing, indicating the high stability for OER.

Abstract:Developing efficient transition metal oxide electrodes is essential to energy conversion and storage. In this work, flower-like FeCo2O4 nanosheets supported on Ni foam were synthesized by facile hydrothermal and calcination treatment. Various temperatures influence the morphologies and oxygen evolution reaction activities. Especially, FeCo2O4/NF-120 °C catalysts showed the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity due to the fact that 3D Ni foam provided good conductive substrate-forming FeCo2O4 nanosheets, which enhanced the electrochemical stability and facilitated the transport of electrolyte and release of oxygen. In addition, the synergistic effect between Fe and Co also enhanced active sites and promoted the OER catalytic performance. The flower-like FeCo2O4/Ni electrodes showed a low overpotential of 124 and 339 mV at the current density of 10 and 50 mA cm−2 for OER, respectively. Also, they displayed a low tafel slope of 43.78 mV dec−1 and good stability in alkaline electrolyte. This research could promote the design of low-cost electrocatalysts for OER.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a necessary procedure in various devices including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries but required a higher potential to improve oxygen evolution efficiency due to its slow reaction kinetics. In order to solve this problem, a heterostructured electrocatalyst (Co3O4@FeOx/CC) is synthesized by deposition of iron oxides (FeOx) on carbon cloth (CC) via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD), then growth of the cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheet arrays. The deposition cycle of FeOx on the CC strongly influences the in-situ growth and distribution of Co3O4 nanosheets and electronic conductivity of the electrocatalyst. Owing to the high accessible and electroactive areas and improved electrical conductivity, the free-standing electrode of Co3O4@FeOx/CC with 100 deposition cycles of FeOx exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER with a low overpotential of 314.0 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 29.2 mV dec−1 in alkaline solution, which is much better than that of Co3O4/CC (448 mV), and even commercial RuO2 (380 mV). This design and optimization strategy shows a promising way to synthesize ideally designed catalytic architectures for application in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:In recent years, transition metal catalysts due to their low price, excellent conductivity and high activity have been extensively studied in OER. It is worth noting that Co3+ plays a vital role in the process of oxygen evolution catalysis, because Co3+ ions are considered to be active sites. The development of catalysts with high Co3+ content has important application prospects for improving water oxidation efficiency. This paper uses a simple ligand-assisted synthesis method to promote the transformation of two-dimensional layered double hydroxides (LDHs) into two-dimensional metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOF-OH/NF are quickly and easily prepared by electrooxidation, which exhibit superior OER properties, with a low overpotential of 260 mV and 420 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 100 mA cm−2 and 1000 mA cm−2. Moreover, the MOF-OH/NF has good stability in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte solution. This study provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of novel composite electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts for faster anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis is significant to hydrogen production. In this study, an electrocatalyst NiCo@Ni3S2/NF for OER was prepared using a two-step method. Ni3S2 nanoarray was initially grown on a nickel foam (NF) substrate, followed by the deposition of an ultrathin NiCo layered double hydroxides (LDH) film that wrapped around the surface of Ni3S2/NF to form a hill-shaped morphology. Characterization results of SEM, TEM, and XPS confirmed the presence of a heterogeneous interface with an enlarged contact area between NiCo LDH and Ni3S2 in this unique structure. This leads to more active species such as Ni3+ and Co3+, resulting in enhanced intrinsic catalytic activity. This hill-shaped topography also demonstrated to be conducive to the release of oxygen bubbles generated during OER process. The prepared electrocatalyst NiCo@Ni3S2/NF exhibits a rapid charge transfer rate and a Tafel slope as low as 63 mV·dec−1. It therefore demonstrates excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 245 mV at current density of 10 mA cm−2, and long-term stability under both currents of 10 and 50 mA cm−2.

Abstract:Ni- and Co-based (oxy)hydroxides are promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their limited specific surface area and poor intrinsic conductivity lead to unsatisfied OER activity. Herein, a unique and universal self-template strategy has been developed to fabricate Fe-incorporated CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (Fe-CoNi-OH) nanosheet-assembled nanorod arrays toward OER. The reorganized nanosheet-assembled nanorod hierarchical structure induced by Fe incorporation exposes more active sites and facilitates mass transfer. Furthermore, Fe incorporation modifies the electron structure of CoNi (oxy)hydroxide (CoNi-OH), and enhances its electronic conductivity for rapid electron transport, thus intrinsically enhancing the OER activity. Consequently, the Fe-CoNi-OH possesses excellent OER activity with low overpotentials of 210, 248, 304, and 349 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, along with a very small Tafel slope of 28.0 mV dec−1, which are superior to the CoNi-OH and benchmark RuO2. By paring the Fe-CoNi-OH anode with a CoP cathode, an outstanding alkaline electrolyzer has been constructed, which only requires cell voltages of 1.506 and 1.623 V to deliver current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and can stably work for 100 h. This work provides a universal strategy to synthesize Fe-containing hierarchical nanostructured catalysts for energy conversion application.

Abstract:In this work, we report an efficient catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction based on CeO2 nanoparticles modified Co3O4 nanoneedle arrays directly grown on copper foam. Cobalt hydroxyl carbonate (CoHC) nanoneedle arrays are grown on Cu foam by a hydrothermal method. Using an electrochemical deposition method, Ce(OH)(3) is deposited on the surface of the CoHC nanoneedles, which is converted into CeO2 modified Co3O4 with the same morphology by simple calcination in air. Excellent catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction is observed, featured for the low overpotential of only 334 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH. The enhanced OER performance is attributed to the variable Ce oxidation number and oxygen vacancy in CeO2. The results demonstrate the positive effect of CeO2 for the oxygen evolution reaction which was largely ignored in previous study. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
