Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. Three-Dimensional Ni Foam-Supported CoO Nanoparticles/N-Doped Carbon Multilayer Nanocomposite Electrode for Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Metal-organic complex (MOC) multilayers are, for the first time, conformally constructed on Ni foam (NF) via a three-component sequential layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach and converted to three-dimensional (3-D) NF-supported interconnected CoO nanoparticles (NPs)/N-doped carbon nanohybrid multilayers via calcination. The obtained nanoarchitecture delivers an overpotential of 318 mV to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec(-1). This activity is superior to most reported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and even much better than those of Ir- and Ru-based ones measured under the same conditions (0.1 M KOH). Additionally, this electrode undergoes negligible potential and current change after 19.8 h chronopotentiometric measurement and 300 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the ultrasmall and high-density CoO NPs embedded in Ndoped carbon uniformly assembled on the 3-D substrate significantly increasing electrochemically accessible active sites and durability and the N-doped carbon greatly promoting intrinsic activity of CoO. This work not only creates 3-D highly tunable networked nanostructured electrodes with excellent durability for high-efficiency electrocatalysis but also develops a facile, economical, and extremely versatile strategy to controllably self-assemble conformal MOC-based multilayers with multifunctionality and superior performance on essentially any substrate at the molecular level for broad applications.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts to speed up the slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is both an opportunity and a challenge. Herein, we present a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived highly active OER catalyst (NiFe-MOF-S@CNT) composed of Fe/NiS heterostructure-embedded nanosheets interconnected by carbon nanotubes network via a direct two-step solvothermal method. The optimized NiFe-MOF-S@CNT catalyst demonstrates outstanding OER activity: it requires an ultralow overpotential of 237 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 ( η 10 ) with a small Tafel slope of 42.3 mV/dec, surpassing the commercial RuO 2 ( η 10 = 295 mV) and most other transition metal catalysts. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and large specific surface area, the MOF-derived NiFe-MOF-S@CNT nanosheets facilitate enhancing mass transfer and electrolyte penetration. Additionally, the incorporation of Fe/NiS heterostructures within the nanosheets, along with carbon nanotubes, generates interfacial effects, promoting electronic interactions and exposing more active sites, thus significantly boosting OER activity. The backbone of carbon nanotubes not only enhances conductivity but also prevents agglomeration of the metal phase, ensuring uniform dispersion of active sites. This work offers a cost-effective and green approach for synthesizing highly efficient transition metal-based sulfides and also paves the way for advancing OER electrocatalysis for various energy applications.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical half-reaction in electrochemical overall water splitting and metal-air battery fields; however, the exploitation of the high activity of non-noble metal electrocatalysts to promote the intrinsic slow kinetics of OER is a vital and urgent research topic. Herein, Fe-doped Ni3S2 arrays were derived from MOF precursors and directly grown on nickel foam via the traditional solvothermal way. The arrays integrated into nickel foam can be used as self-supported electrodes directly without any adhesive. Due to the synergistic effect of Fe and Ni elements in the Ni3S2 structure, the optimized Fe2.3%-Ni3S2/NF electrode delivers excellent OER activity in an alkaline medium. The optimized electrode only requires a small overpotential of 233 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2, and the catalytic activity of the electrode can surpass several related electrodes reported in the literature. In addition, the long-term stability of the Fe2.3%-Ni3S2/NF electrode showed no significant attenuation after 12 h of testing at a current density of 50 mA cm-2. The introduction of Fe ions could modulate the electrical conductivity and morphology of the Ni3S2 structure and thus provide a high electrochemically active area, fast reaction sites, and charge transfer rate for OER activity.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The development of cheap, abundant, and highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgently needed for hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we demonstrate a novel OER electrocatalyst (NiFe(CN)5NO/Ni3S2) prepared by coupling Ni3S2 and a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) of NiFe(CN)5NO on nickel foam (NF) via a simple two-step route. The NiFe(CN)5NO/Ni3S2 electrocatalyst displays an interesting rod-like hierarchical architecture assembled by ultrathin nanosheets. The combination of NiFe(CN)5NO and Ni3S2 optimizes the electronic structure of the metal active sites and increases the electron transfer capability. Benefitting from the synergistic effect between Ni3S2 and the NiFe-MOF as well as the unique hierarchical architecture, the NiFe(CN)5NO/Ni3S2/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic OER activity with ultralow overpotentials of 162/197 mV at 10/100 mA cm-2 and an ultrasmall Tafel slope of 26 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH, which are far superior to those of the individual NiFe(CN)5NO, Ni3S2 and commercial IrO2 catalysts. In particular, unlike common metal sulfide-based electrocatalysts, the composition, morphology and microstructure of the NiFe-MOF/Ni3S2 composite electrocatalyst can be well retained after the OER, which endows it with fantastic long-term durability. This work offers a new strategy for the construction of novel and high-efficiency MOF-based composite electrocatalysts for energy applications.

Abstract:The development of earth–abundant and high–performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a very important part for electrochemical water splitting to generate cleanliness and renewable hydrogen. The preparation of heterogeneous nanostructure composite is an effective method to further improve the performance of noble–metal–free catalysts. Herein, heterogeneous nanostructure of Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF electrocatalyst for OER was fabricated by a hydrothermal method and the subsequent oxidation process. The as–prepared Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF presents a unique thin–wall cell structure. Benefiting from the thin–wall cell structure and the synergistic effect between Co3O4 and Fe2O3, as well as the three–dimensionally (3D) conductive feature of the substrate of nickel foam (NF), the Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF electrode demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity for OER in alkaline solution. The overpotential is 254 mV at 10 mA cm−2 current density, the Tafel slope is only 33 mV dec−1, and the electrode also retained good stability of 24 h at the current density of 20 mA cm−2. Compared with pristine Co3O4/Fe2O3 (η10 = 493 mV), Co3O4@NF (η10 = 350 mV) and Fe2O3@NF (η10 = 378 mV), the Co3O4/Fe2O3@NF electrode displayed obviously enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as potential candidates for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reactions (OER) due to their inherent properties like abundant coordination unsaturated active sites and efficient charge transfer. Herein, a versatile and massively synthesizable self-etching assembly strategy wherein nickel-iron foam (NFF) acts as a substrate and a metal ion source. Specifically, by etching the nickel-iron foam (NFF) surface using ligands and solvents, Ni/Fe metal ions are activated and subsequently reacted under hydrothermal conditions, resulting in the formation of self-supporting nanosheet arrays, eliminating the need for external metal salts. The obtained 33 % NiFeMOF/NFF exhibits remarkable OER performance with ultra-low overpotentials of 188/231 mV at 10/100 mA cm-2, respectively, outperforming most recently reported catalysts. Besides, the built 33 % NiFeMOF/NFF(+)||Pt/C(-) electrolyzer presents low cell voltages of 1.55/1.83 V at 10/100 mA cm-2, superior to the benchmark RuO2 (+)||Pt/C(-), implying good industrialization prospects. The excellent catalytic activity stems from the modulation of the electronic spin state of the Ni active site by the introduction of Fe, which facilitates the adsorption process of oxygen-containing intermediates and thus enhances the OER activity. This innovative approach offers a promising pathway for commercial-scale sustainable energy solutions.

Abstract:Developing highly active and sustained oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for energy-saving electrolytic hydrogen generation is highly attractive. In this work, we report the development of a Cu3Mo2O9 nanosheet array on nickel foam (Cu3Mo2O9/NF) as a highly active OER catalyst. Such Cu3Mo2O9/NF shows high catalytic activity in 1.0 M KOH, passing 50 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 325 mV. It also shows superior long-term durability more than 24 h with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.09 mol O2 s-1 at overpotential of 400 mV.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing highly efficient, stable and inexpensive electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a significant research topic for the development of clean energy. Herein, a catalyst of Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterostructure nanowires supported on nickel foam is fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal method. The catalyst shows excellent OER activity with an overpotential of only 294 mV at 20 mA cm−2, which may be attributed to the defective heterointerfaces between the metallic Co9S8 and Ni3S2 nanocrystalline grains. This efficient strategy for preparing Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterostructure catalyst can shed some light on the design of noble metal-free electrocatalysts. The performances for electrocatalytic oxidation of H2O2 on the electrodes are studied, and the results indicate that the step of –OOH oxidation in OER is a fast kinetics process and not the rate-determining step.

Loading FeOOH on Ni(OH)2 hollow nanorods to obtain a three-dimensional sandwich catalyst with strong electron interactions for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Sustainable production of hydrogen by water splitting requires the exploration of highly efficient electrocatalysts from abundant non-precious metals on Earth. Ni(OH)2 hollow nanorod arrays were obtained on Ni foam by simple alkali etching, and FeOOH was electrodeposited on the walls of hollow nanorods to construct FeOOH@Ni(OH)2 sandwich hollow nanorod arrays, which help overcome the drawbacks of the poor conductivity and poor stability of FeOOH and boost the catalytic performance of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in comparison with the individual components. A fully contacted three-dimensional nanorod array structure provides many exposed catalytically active sites and promotes charge transfer during the electrochemical OER process. The presence of FeOOH can promote the formation of a more conductive catalytically active component, NiOOH, which improves the catalytic performance of Ni(OH)2. The electronic interaction and synergistic catalysis between nickel and iron enhances the electrochemical performance of the catalyst significantly. The optimized FeOOH@Ni(OH)2 sandwich hollow nanorod arrays show an outstanding OER activity with a small overpotential of 245 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 45 mV dec-1. The catalyst can maintain a substantially constant voltage over 40 h in 1.0 M KOH solution. Our work provides a new strategy to prepare Ni-Fe bimetallic materials as OER electrocatalysts.
MOF-derived FeNiCoOX hierarchical hollow nanocages for oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Highly efficient, inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts of oxygen evolution reaction are of great significance for the potential application of water splitting in new energy technology. In this work, we develop FeNiCoOX hierarchical hollow nanocages via a cation exchange reaction with annealing in air, which show excellent OER performances in 1M KOH. This FeNiCoOx catalyst exhibits a small overpotential of 248 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 45.4 mV dec-1, as well as the remarkable stability. Excellent electrocatalytic performances are attributed to the synergistic effects from the multi-metal element compositions and the hierarchical hollow structures.

Abstract:Although traditional IrO2 nanoparticles loaded on a carbon support (IrO2@C) have been taken as a benchmark catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), their catalytic efficiency, operation stability, and IrO2 utilization are far from satisfactory due to the inferior powdery structure and inevitable corrosion of both IrO2 and C under the oxidizing potentials. Here, a rational design of a self-supported hierarchical nanocomposite, composed of IrO2@NiO nanoparticle-built porous nanoflake arrays vertically growing on nickel foam, is proposed, which is demonstrated as a versatile strategy to achieve improved OER activity, remarkable long-term stability, and significantly reduced loading of IrO2 (0.62 atom %). Impressively, the resultant catalyst drives a steady OER current density of 10 mA cm-2, requiring 278 mV overpotential in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte for 25 h and outmaneuvring commercial IrO2@C with much higher mass loading. Further electrochemical investigation and mechanism analysis disclose that the greatly improved electrocatalytic activity stems from the advantageous hierarchical structure and the synergistic effect between IrO2 and underlying potential-induced NiOOH, whereas the outstanding durability is attributed to the unique role of NiO in preventing IrO2 dissolution.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrolytic water splitting. It is urgent to explore highly active non-precious metal OER catalysts. Herein, the etching combined with the electrodeposition was used to synthesize the efficient Ni–Fe/p-CoAl catalyst, which exhibits ideal OER performance. A low overpotential of 282 mV and 296 mV are needed to achieve the current density of 50 mA/cm 2 and 100 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst shows good durability with no detectable degradation during long-term operation. The enhanced OER performance can be attributed to the large electrochemical surface area and the strong interaction between Ni–Fe nanosheets and active substrate.

Abstract:Hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) and water electrolysis are emerging clean energy technologies that can alleviate the problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage. Oxygen Extraction Reaction (OER) is a slow four-electron transfer process with a high energy barrier, and often regarded as the bottleneck of a series of clean energy technologies. In this paper, NiMoO 4 nanorods (denoted as NMO) were in situ grown on nickel foam substrate, and then ZIF-67 nanoparticles were assembled onto NiMoO 4 nanorods (denoted as NMO@ZIF-67). Finally, the surface layers of NiMoO 4 nanorods and ZIF-67 nanoparticles were vulcanized by hydrothermal treatment for 6 h to obtain the catalyst NiMoO 4 @NiMoCo-S-6 (denoted as NMO@NMC-S-6). In 1 M KOH aqueous solution, NMO@NMC-S-6 exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, only 176 mV and 243 mV overpotentials were required at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm -2 , respectively, and Tafel slope of NMO@NMC-S-6 is 24.81 mV dec -1 . In addition, benefitting from the combined structure of nanorods and nanoparticles effectively prevented nanoparticles aggregation and enhanced its own structure and transport channel stability, NMO@NMC-S-6 showed remarkable stability in 20 h electrochemical test. This work brings a reference orientation for constructing cost-efficient alkaline OER catalyst through structure combination strategy.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for producing hydrogen via water splitting. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide an opportunity for the facile preparation of high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts. In this work, we prepared iron-doped nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (Fe-Ni@NC) with a unique hierarchical porous structure by directly pyrolyzing the MOF precursor for effectively boosting OER. The Fe doping has a significant enhancement effect on the catalytic performance. The optimized Fe (5%)-Ni@NC catalyst represents a remarkable activity with an overpotential of 257 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and superior stability toward OER in 1.0 M KOH.

Abstract:Hydrogen, carrying a high energy density and emitting zero greenhouse gases when in use, is particularly promising as an alternative for traditional fossil fuels. Electrochemical water splitting is an economical technology for producing sustainable and high-purity hydrogen gas. However, the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) always decreases the efficiency of hydrogen production; the development of highly active and durable electrocatalysts with improved OER kinetics is thus desirable and crucial. Herein, Fe-based metal–organic framework (MOF)-Ni3S2 heterostructure nanocomposites are synthesized on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. The self-supporting Fe MOF-Ni3S2/NF catalyst shows excellent catalytic activities for OER. In alkaline media (1.0 M KOH), only 243 mV of overpotential is needed to reach the current density of 100 mA·cm–2. Even at the commercially viable high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA·cm–2, ultralow overpotentials of 283 and 309 mV are required, respectively. The catalytic activity of Fe MOF-Ni3S2/NF far exceeds that of the noble metal catalysts (e.g., RuO2) and most non-noble metal OER catalysts reported in the literature. In addition, the Fe MOF-Ni3S2/NF nanocomposite exhibits ultrahigh long-term stability at high current densities, with almost no activity attenuation in the chronopotentiometry test conducted at 100 mA·cm–2 and a negligible attenuation (23 mV) at 500 mA·cm–2 for 20 h. Our findings provide insights into designing and preparing cost-effective, highly active, and durable electrocatalysts for OER at high current densities.

Abstract:Ultrathin FeNiOxHy nanoflake arrays with the thickness of only ~4.5 nm were prepared on Ni foam (NF) via a facile hydrothermal reaction. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties of the obtained sample (FeNiOxHy/NF) were investigated under alkaline conditions (1.0 M KOH). The optimized FeNiOxHy/NF displays extremely small overpotentials of only 195 and 306 mV to achieve the current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, and shows almost no potential attenuation during the 160 hours of stability test even the current density is up to 1000 mA cm−2, demonstrating brilliant OER catalytic activity and durability. FeOOH and the NiOOH produced from the in situ oxidation of the surface Ni atoms of the NF substrate are the active sites. The synergistic effect between FeOOH and NiOOH is responsible for the high performances. To our knowledge, the high activity and stability of FeNiOxHy/NF catalyst outperform almost all of the OER catalysts reported to date. These informative findings are valuable not only for understanding the mechanism of OER but also for the design of cheap transition metal catalysts for industrial water electrolysis at high current densities.
