Abstract:The washing wastewater from the desulfuration and denitration of power plants has high salt (chloride and sulfate) and ammonia-nitrogen concentrations and is difficult to treat using microbiological methods. A novel anoxic/oxic biofilm process was developed to remove ammonia from wastewater. Three rapid strategies (sulfate concentration was increased from 0 to 60 g/L in 6, 13, and 22 days (R1, R2, and R3, respectively)) were applied and produced biofilm with the same nitrification capacity as slow strategies (100-203 days). Excessive organics inhibited the nitrification capacity of the biofilm. R1 excelled at ammonia removal (from 30% to 95%, 70 mg/ (L center dot d), with an effluent ammonia concentration of 4 mg/L) at 60 g/L salinity after the organic load was reduced. The content of extracellular polymeric substances in biofilm depended on its capacity to remove organics. Pseudomonas and Thauera were enriched in the three reactors. Controlling the organic load might prevent the sulfur cycle.

Abstract:Partial nitrification of ammonia-containing wastewater can save energy and reduce cost, and has become one of the hotspots in the research of biological nitrogen removal from wastewater. Abstract:Excess sludge of wastewater treatment plants can cause environmental threats; hence, it should be treated.This study placed the humic biological composite fillers in the anoxic-oxic-settling-anaerobic (A-OSA) process to reduce sludge production and improve nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency.The results indicated that the humic biological composite fillers could intensify the excess operational taxonomic units of the A-OSA process.The cumulative excess sludge production of humic biological composite fillers was reduced to 147.89 g (81.61% amount of A-OSA process) by strengthening the A-OSA process (A-O HA SA).In addition, the average total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies of A-O HA SA were 79.23% and 91.74%, respectively.Miseq high-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the effects of composite humic biological filler on sludge reduction and TN-TP removal in the A-O HA SA process.The microbiological diversity of the A-O HA SA process was also studied.The humic biological composite fillers could affect the operating environment of the A-O HA SA process.Compared with A-OSA, the microbial diversity and community structure were changed in A-O HA SA.Proteobacteria and Flavobacteria, beneficial to nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus-accumulating, became the dominant microflora.Burkholderiales and Flavobacteriales reproduced slowly, favoring sludge reduction.

Abstract:In this study, the start of partial nitrification (activated sludge)-anaerobic ammonia oxidation (immobilized fillers)-denitrification (immobilized fillers) and stable nitrogen removal in the treatment of rare earth element tailings wastewater were explored. The results showed that, at 25–30 °C, partial nitrification could be rapidly established by controlling the combination of average free ammonia concentration (25.4–60.2 mg/L) and dissolved oxygen concentration (0.5 mg/L). Adopting the stepwise substrate (three stages) and shortening hydraulic retention time (HRT) methods, the total nitrogen removal rate of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) immobilized fillers reached up to 0.99 kg N•(m 3 •d) −1 . Adopting the C/N ratio of 4.5:1 and shorter HRT methods, the total nitrogen removal rate of denitrification immobilized fillers reached up to 1.07 kg N•(m 3 •d) −1 . The activities of the anammox and denitrification immobilized fillers were increased by 8.39 and 4.46 times, respectively. At steady state operation, the average effluent ammonia nitrogen concentration was 3.01 mg/L, with an average effluent total nitrogen concentration of 5.11 mg/L, which met the requirements of the "Emission Standard for Pollutants from Rare Earth Industry" GB 26451–2011. High-throughput sequencing technology showed that the relative abundance ratios of Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira changed from 0.36:1–108.05:1. The dominant bacterial genera of the anammox immobilized fillers was Candidatus Kuenenia , and that of denitrification immobilized fillers were Pseudomonas and Thauera . This process provides a new technical approach for rare earth element tailings wastewater treatment, with high significance in engineering.

Abstract:The integration of powdered activated carbon and biofilm carriers in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) presents a promising approach to address the challenge of long hydraulic retention time (HRT) for nitrification of hydrolysed urine. This study investigated the effect of the incorporation in the MBR on microbial dynamics, focusing on dominant nitrifying bacteria. The results showed that significant shifts in microbial compositions were observed with the feed transition to full-strength urine and across different sludge growth forms. Remarkably, the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria Nitrospira were highly enriched in the suspended sludge. Simultaneously, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, Nitrosococcaceae thrived in the attached biomass, showing a significant seven-fold increase in relative abundance compared to its suspended counterpart. Consequently, the incorporated MBR displayed 36% higher nitrification rate and 40% HRT reduction compared to the conventional MBR. This study provides valuable insights on the potential development of household or building scale on-site nutrient recovery from urine to fertiliser.

Abstract:Purifying tank as a compact biofilm reactor has been widely used to remove organic matter in rural sewage, but its potential for nitrogen removal is rare to be discussed. This study developed a lab-scale compact biofilm reactor to realize an efficient nitrogen removal performance by step-feed, intermittent aeration, and immobilization technique. The results show that an efficient simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process took place by feeding with synthetic wastewater under high C/N ratio of 2 and with real sewage as well, mainly due to the step-feed. The average removal efficiency of total inorganic nitrogen arrived at 72.7 and 63.3% for synthetic wastewater and real sewage, respectively. Besides the step-feed operation, the intermittent aeration was adopted to enhance SND, which allowed hydraulic behavior of compact biofilm reactor following the model of completely stirred tank reactor. The high-throughput sequencing analysis indicates that Sphaerotilus became the dominant genera with relative abundance of 30.29% under high C/N ratio, and the nitrifiers were not greatly inhibited. Moreover, the immobilization technique helped restore microbial activity under low temperature, promoting the satisfactory nitrogen removal performance of recovered microorganism to be rebuilt by feeding nutrient solution. Overall, the long-term SND process and maintaining effective biofilm activity can be established in the compact biofilm reactor through several improving alternatives.

Abstract:The microbial molecular ecology techniques, which were developed on the basis of molecular, were applied in studying the bacteria in Constructed Rapid Infiltration (CRI) system. These techniques are very efficient in better describing the bacterial diversity, microbial community distribution, and relations between microbial group structure and nitrogen contamination through the analysis of microbial nucleic acid sequence fragment in CRI. Advanced Treatment of Low-Pollution and Poor Biodegradability Sewage by Combined Process

Abstract:A system was developed for the treatment of low-pollution sewage with poor biodegradability and a low ratio of chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) to nitrate-nitrogen (COD/NO3 -N (C/N)) ratio to achieve high efficiency. This system combines the anaerobic-oxic (AO) process with the biological aerated filter (BAF) and introduces the Fenton advanced oxidation process. A pilot test system was established, and feasibility investigations were conducted using a continuous flow of 500 L/h. The results showed that the optimal conditions for removing nitrate from sewage were achieved with a C/N ratio of 5.5-6 and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 h. Under these conditions, the average nitrate removal efficiency was 83.36%, and the average concentration of total nitrogen (TN) in the effluent was reduced to 6.68 mg/L. Additionally, the Fenton oxidation treatment was effective in reducing the COD content of sewage, with an average removal efficiency of 82.47% and a decrease in CODCr from 55.24 mg/L to 9.68 mg/L. The combined process successfully met the stringent discharge standards after advanced treatment. Microbial community analysis revealed that the dominant genera in anoxic BAFs were Trichococcus, Comamonadaceae, Lentimicrobium, and Thauera, while the dominant genera in aerobic BAFs were mainly Acinetobacter, Thiothrix, Gemmobacter, and Caldilineaceae. The synergistic effect of various nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in BAFs effectively removed nitrate from the sewage. Furthermore, GC-MS analysis indicated that the Fenton oxidation significantly reduced the concentration of refractory organic compounds in the sewage, including long-chain organic compounds and acrylic acid maleic acid copolymer (MA/AA). After upgrading and renovating the factory's sewage treatment facilities, the impact of the discharged effluent on the receiving drainage basin will be minimized.

Abstract:There have been many studies on single strains in wastewater treatment and a new synthetic microbial community was prepared in this study, which provides a reference for the application of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification in actual wastewater treatment. The growth period distribution of the composite bacteria was determined by plotting growth curves with different sole nitrogen sources, and the influence of the carbon source, carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) ratio, pH, and temperature on ammonia removal by the composite heterotrophic nitrifying-aerobic denitrifying strain was investigated. The optimal conditions for the heterotrophic nitrification process were sodium citrate as the carbon source, a C/N ratio of 10, a pH of 7, and a temperature of 30 °C, and only trace amounts of nitrate and nitrite were observed during the process. When the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) of a pig farm wastewater treatment plant was inoculated with the synthetic microbial community, the average removals of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen in the effluent were 92.61% and 20.56%, respectively. From the results, the synthetic microbial community was able to simultaneously perform heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification indicating great potential for full-scale applications.

Abstract:Rapid achievement of nitritation of mainstream municipal wastewater in a continuous-flow process is attractive since it favors the involvement of the anammox process and reduces the operational costs. In this study, a feasible and economical strategy is proposed to rapidly achieve the nitritation of municipal wastewater. By aggressively discharging excess sludge during the seasonal warming period (temperature increasing from 18°C to 22°C), nitritation was established in 15 days with a nitrite accumulation ratio of 85.09% in a continuous-flow anaerobic/oxic (An/O) reactor. Meanwhile, qPCR results revealed that amoA abundance increased from (1.78±0.10) × 108 copies/(g VSS) to (1.05±0.11) × 1010 copies/(g VSS) while the abundance of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria decreased from (1.1±0.02) × 1010 copies/(g VSS) to (5.01±0.02) × 108 copies/(g VSS). The temperature gradually stabilized at 26°C during the following operational period and stable nitritation was maintained with a nitrite accumulation ratio above 90%, which was mainly attributed to a short sludge retention time (SRT) of 4.3 days and a low dissolved oxygen of 0.86 ± 0.5 mg/L. Falling temperature negatively impacted the stability of nitritation, but nitritation could be restarted by aggressively discharging excess sludge during another temperature increase period. Overall, this study provides a feasible strategy to start-up nitritation that has great potential applications for municipal wastewater treatment.

Performance and mechanism analysis of gel immobilized anammox bacteria in treating different proportions of domestic wastewater: a valid alternative to granular sludge

Abstract:The treatment performance of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) immobilized filler on different proportions of domestic wastewater was evaluated. The results showed that, in comparison to synthetic wastewater, 50% domestic wastewater promoted the anammox reaction of immobilized filler, while 100% domestic wastewater had no significant effect on the anammox activity of immobilized filler but the total nitrogen removal efficiency (TNRE) was improved through enhanced denitrification. The TNRE of the immobilized filler was 82.5%, which was significantly higher than that of AnGS (69.7%), and its average anammox contribution rate was more than 90%. This was because the encapsulated anammox biomass could better maintain competitive advantages and coordinate the symbiotic relationship with denitrifying bacteria. Moreover, lower NH4+-N concentration resulted in greater influence of C/N ratio on anammox performance than COD concentration, while the opposite was true at high NH4+-N concentration. This study verified that anammox immobilized filler is effective for mainstream applications.

Abstract:Media-supported biofilm is a powerful strategy for growth and enrichment of slow-growing microorganisms. In this study, a single-stage nitritation-anammox process treating low-strength wastewater was successfully started to investigate the biofilm development on porous polyurethane hydrogel carrier. Suspended biomass migration into the carrier and being entrapment by its internal interconnected micropores dominated the fast initial colonization stage. Both surface-attached growth and embedded growth of microbes occurred during the following accumulation stage. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis of mature biofilm indicated that ammonium-oxidizing bacteria located at the outer layers featured a surface-attached growth, while anammox microcolonies housed in the inner layers proliferated as an embedded-like growth. In this way, the growth rate of anammox bacteria (predominated by Candidatus Kuenenia ) could be 0.079 d -1 . The anammox potential of the biofilm reactor reached 1.65±0.3 kg/m 3 /d within two months. This study provides novel insights into nitritation-anammox biofilm formation on the porous polyurethane hydrogel carrier.

Abstract:The invention relates to an apparatus for treating coking wastewater through immobilized MBR autotroph nitrogen removal, and a method thereof. The apparatus is composed of a water feeding system, an aeration system, a membrane bioreactor, a water discharging system and a water-bath circulating system. An autotroph nitrogen removal technology is carried out by adopting the membrane bioreactor, a microbe immobilization technology is introduced, and a carrier used by microbe immobilization is arranged in the membrane bioreactor to improve the running performances of the reactor, so microenvironment suitable for growth of aerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria and anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria is provided, and the membrane pollution is alleviated. The method has the advantages of no external carbon source, good wastewater treatment effect and low cost.

Abstract:A 12‐L gas‐liquid‐solid three‐phase flow airlift loop bioreactor, in which biological membranes replace the activated sludge, was used in the nitrifying treatment of a real effluent in a Nanjing chemical fertilizer plant. The influences of temperature, pH, air flow rate and HRT on ammonia nitrogen reduction were investigated and discussed. The optimum operating conditions, such as temperature of 30–35 °C, pH value of 7–8, air influx of 0.3 m 3 /h, and hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 8 hours, were found. Under optimum operating conditions, the average removal efficiencies of COD and NH 4 ‐N are higher than 95 % and 99 %, corresponding to the effluent COD < 50 mg/L and NH 4 ‐N < 5 mg/L, which is far below the primary discharge standard for the chemical fertilizer industry of P.R. China – COD < 150 mg/L and NH 4 ‐N < 60 mg/L (GWPB4–1999). In addition, the radial and axial positions have little influence on the local profiles of COD and NH 4 ‐N.
Innovative Technology of Municipal Wastewater Treatment for Rapid Sludge Sedimentation and Enhancing Pollutants Removal with Nano-Material.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a novel technology for actual municipal wastewater treatment to achieve rapid sludge sedimentation and high pollutants removal efficiency. The SBRs were modified and operated with periodic addition of 20 mu L.L-1 nanofloc (R). Results revealed that NH4+-N and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was efficiently removed in both laboratoryand pilot-scale SBRs, and the average removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) was as high as 72.43 +/- 2.66% and 98.63 +/- 0.74%, respectively, with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h. Besides, the sludge volume index at 30 min (SVI30) was only 40.06 +/- 1.99 mL.g(-1), comparable with aerobic granular sludge (AGS). This novel technology could be proposed as a competitive method to upgrade, reconstruct and delay the expansion of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to its rapid sludge sedimentation and efficient pollutants removal with low HRT.

Abstract:Fillers are core components of biofilm wastewater treatment systems and directly affect the efficiency of wastewater pollutant removal. New fillers were prepared using a non-sintered process with dewatered sludge as the raw material. The structure of the new filler and the microbial community were investigated and the results showed that the new filler had a complex composition and nature, a large specific surface area and many attached microorganisms; the new filler was applied to the BAF system and the amount of biofilm on the surface of the new filler was 102 mg/g during start-up. At an HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 6 hours and a gas to water ratio of 7:1, the removal rates of COD, NH 3 -N and TN of the new BAF (biological aerated filter) system reached 74%, 73% and 32%, respectively. At different filler heights, the biofilm amount, biological activity, and pollutant removal effectiveness of the new packed BAF were higher than those of the control filler. The microbial diversity and microorganism selectivity of the new filler BAF system were better and more abundant than those of the control filler BAF system. The study results could provide some scientific basis and technical support for the application of the new filler in biofilm wastewater treatment systems.
