Abstract:The study utilizes the system combined bioreactor with landfill site to treat leachate. The results show that the system helped the degradation of the organic pollutants in the leachate to be divided into two-phases, the hydrolytic fermentation and acid-production phases mainly occurred in the landfill site, the acidification rate was 40%-50%, the methane-production chiefly occurred in the bioreactor(UASB). It treated the leachate significantly and benefits the collection and utilization of methane gas. Also, the system accelerates the process of degrading municipal solid waste and stabilizing landfill site.

Abstract:Ex situ nitrification and sequential in situ denitrification represents a novel approach to nitrogen management at landfills. Simultaneous ammonia and organics removal was achieved in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The results showed that the maximum nitrogen loading rate (NLR) and the maximum organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.65gNl−1d−1 and 3.84gCODl−1d−1, respectively. The ammonia and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was over 99% and 57%, respectively. In the run of the CSTR, free ammonia (FA) inhibition and low dissolved oxygen (DO) were found to be key factors affecting nitrite accumulation. In situ denitrification was studied in a municipal solid waste (MSW) column by recalculating nitrified leachate from CSTR. The decomposition of MSW was accelerated by the recirculation of nitrified leachate. Complete reduction of total oxidized nitrogen (TON) was obtained with maximum TON loading of 28.6gNt−1TSd−1 and denitrification was the main reaction responsible. Additionally, methanogenesis inhibition was observed while TON loading was over 11.4gNt−1TSd−1 and the inhibition was enhanced with the increase of TON loading.

Abstract:With comparison of a traditional landfill, a joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate to landfills with or without a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment was investigated in this study. The results showed that the joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment could not only utilize the microaerobic reactor to buffer the fluctuation of quality and quantity of leachate during landfill stabilization, but also reduce the inhibitory effect of acidic pH and high concentrations of ammonium in recycled liquid on microorganisms and accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste. After 390 days of operation, the discharge of COD and total nitrogen (TN) from the landfill with leachate pretreatment by a microaerobic reactor was 7.4 and 0.9 g, respectively, which accounted for 0.7% and 2.6% of COD, 1.9% and 7.5% of the TN discharge from the landfills without recirculation and directly recirculated with leachate and concentrated leachate, respectively. The degradation of the organic matter and biodegradable matter (BDM) in the landfill reactors could fit well with the first-order kinetics. The highest degradation of the organic matter and BDM was observed in the joint recirculation system with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment with the degradation constant of the first-order kinetics of 0.001 and 0.002.
[Performance of Leachate Nitrogen Removal in Bioreactor Landfill System].

Abstract:Utilizing the unique vertical aerobic-anoxic-anerobic ecological enviornment of landfills and adopting intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse, this paper studied the performance of leachate nitrogen removal in the bioreactor landfill system. The results showed that intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse could stimulate the growth of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. The population of denitrifying bacteria was 4 to approximately 13 orders of magnitude higher than that in conventional landfilled waste layers, and the maximal value of nitrifying bacteria population reached 10(9) cells g(-1). The bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse increased the potential of nitrogen removal from re-circulated leachate in the landfill bioreactor. By the end of the experiment, the concentrations of leachate NH4(+) -N and total nitrogen (TN) decreased to 186 mg x L(-1) and 289 mg x L(-1), being only 18% and 26% of control, respectively. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse also accelerated refuse decomposition, and increased the degree of waste stabilization.

Abstract:A sequential upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and air-lift loop sludge blanket (ALSB) treatment was introduced into leachate recirculation to remove organic matter and ammonia from leachate in a lab-scale bioreactor landfill. The results showed that the sequential anaerobic–aerobic process might remove above 90% of COD and near to 100% of NH4+-N from leachate under the optimum organic loading rate (OLR). The total COD removal efficiency was over 98% as the OLR increased to 6.8–7.7g/ld, but the effluent COD concentration increased to 2.9–4.8g/l in the UASB reactor, which inhibited the activity of nitrifying bacteria in the subsequent ALSB reactor. The NO3--N concentration in recycled leachate reached 270mg/l after treatment by the sequential anaerobic–aerobic process, but the landfill reactor could efficiently denitrify the nitrate. After 56 days operation, the leachate TN and NH4+-N concentrations decreased to less than 200mg/l in the bioreactor landfill system. The COD concentration was about 200mg/l with less than 8mg/l BOD in recycled leachate at the late stage. In addition, it was found that nitrate in recycled leachate had a negative effect on waste decomposition.

Abstract:Leachate quantity and level controls are now recognized as key problems associated with environmentally sound operation of MSW landfills. Water-balance-method was adopted to analyze the variation of leachate quantity and level in a large landfill in China under average rainfall and instantaneous storm conditions,and the calculated results coincided well with field monitoring data. The implementation effects of different emergency and long-term measures were simulated and analyzed. The implementation effects of control measures were good.

Abstract:Treatment of landfill leachate is a focus of researchers' attention as well as a difficult problem in field of wastewater treatment.Study on the treatment of landfill leachate by separation NH_3-N-SBRcoagulation-chlorination process was carried out and reported in this paper.The optimum process conditions of the method were achieved,moreover,the effect of SBR had been intensified.The results show that COD of leachate is reduced to 93.6 mg/L from 1360 mg/L,BOD_5 is reduced to 28 mg/L from 320 mg/L,NH_3-N is reduced to(16.1 mg/L) from 1098.6 mg/L,The eliminating rate of the chroma is close to 100%.This process is feasible for the treatment of landfill leachate.
Study on Refuse Stabilization in Bioreactor Landfills for Nitrogen Removal

Abstract:Nitrogen removal and refuse stabilization were investigated in the bioreactor landfills with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation.The results showed that the decrease in leachate NH_4~+-N concentration in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse was slower than that with an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,but the theoretical energy consumption of the former was about 98% lower than the latter.The infrastructure investment of aerobic nitrifying reactor and disposal of sludge were no longer indispensable.The way of intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse accelerated the degsadation of waste and organic matter in leachate,increased the degree of waste stabilization and enhanced the subsidence by 10%-12%.However,an aerobic reactor using treated leachate recirculation would bring about a shortage of carbon source at later stage of refuse decomposition,which resulted in slower waste stabilization.Because of the organic matter consumption of denitrifiaction process and the metabolic activity of aerobes,leachate maximal COD_(Cr) and VFA concentrations in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse ammounted to only 50% of the control,and the gas production from the methanogenic reactor reduced by 42%-44%.

Abstract:A laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is used to treat landfill leachate containing high concentration of ammonium nitrogen with municipal fecal supernatant. The SBR system is operated in the following sequential phases: fill period, anoxic period, aeration period, settling period, decant and idle period. The results indicated that the average removal efficiencies of COD, BOD5, TN, NH4+-N were 93.76%, 98.28%, 84.74% and 99.21%, respectively. The average sludge removal loading rates of COD, BOD5, TN and NH4+-N were 0.24 kg/(kg SS·d), 0.08 kg/(kg SS·d), 0.04 kg/(kg SS·d) and 0.036 kg/(kg SS·d), respectively. Highly effective simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was achieved in the SBR system. The ratio of nitrification and denitrification was 99% and 84%, respectively. There was partial NO2− denitrification in the system.

Efficient Utilization of Waste Carbon Source for Advanced Nitrogen Removal of Landfill Leachate

Abstract:A modified single sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was developed to remove the nitrogen of the real landfill leachate in this study. To take the full advantage of the SBR, stir phase was added before and after aeration, respectively. The new mechanism in this experiment could improve the removal of nitrogen efficiently by the utilization of carbon source in the raw leachate. This experiment adopts the SBR process to dispose of the real leachate, in which the COD and ammonia nitrogen concentrations were about 3800 mg/L and 1000 mg/L, respectively. Results showed that the removal rates of COD and total nitrogen were above 85% and 95%, respectively, and the effluent COD and total nitrogen were less than 500 mg/L and 40 mg/L under the condition of not adding any carbon source. Also, the specific nitrogen removal rate was 1.48 mgN/(h·gvss). In this process, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) as a critical factor for the highly efficient nitrogen removal (>95%) was approved to be the primary carbon source in the sludge. Because most of the organic matter in raw water was used for denitrification, in the duration of this 160-day experiment, zero discharge of sludge was realized when the effluent suspended solids were 30–50 mg/L.

Abstract:Based on the complex and intractable characters of landfill leachate and the status of small-scale landfill,an original technique was developed to treat landfill leachate of daishan county landfill in zhejiang province,which combined anaerobic treatment,two-stage sequencing batch reactor(SBR),and coagulation-sedimentation process.The results of 40 consecutive days of operation showed that,except COD,the other routine indexes of the effluent almost met the requirements of standard for pollution control on the landfill site of municipal solid waste(GB 16889-2008) by optimizing the operation parameters.This technique had the advantage of simple flow,steady operation,reasonable cost,and therefore it was suitable to be applied in small-scale leachate treatment.

Abstract:A novel combined process of Fenton oxidation, submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) was applied as an appropriate option for old municipal landfill leachate treatment. Fenton process was designed to intensively solve the problem of non-biodegradable organic pollutant removal and low biodegradability of leachate, although the removal of ammonia-nitrogen was similar to 10%. After SMBR treatment, it not only presented a higher removal efficiency of organics, but also exhibited high ammonia-nitrogen removal of 80% on average. The variation of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, zeta potential, and particle size of flocs after Fenton effluent continually fed in SMBR was found to be benefit for alleviating membrane fouling. Finally, three kinds of RO membranes (RE. CPA, and BW) were applied to treat SMBR effluents and successfully met wastewater re-utilization requirement. Abstract:Wastewater from animal farms in China is threatening the quality and security of the local water environment. A traditional sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a reformed SBR integrated with two-step feeding and low-intensity aeration at laboratory scale were investigated in this study for biological removal of nutrients and organic matter from swine wastewater. A low efficiency and poor stability were found under the traditional SBR, and the reduction of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) reached 89.1, 86.0 and 93.9%, respectively. When the wastewater was treated with the reformed SBR under the running cycle of anaerobic/anoxicanaerobic/anoxic process, the reductions in TN, TP, and BOD5 reached a maximum of 94.0, 99.3 and 99.9%, respectively. The curves of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and nutrients over time during operation of the reformed SBR could reflect the activity of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DNPAOs).
Advanced Nitrogen Removal Via Intracellular Polymers in a Post-denitrification Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)

Abstract:In order to investigate the nitrogen removal performance of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process treating the wastewater with high COD/NH+4-N ratio, a post-denitrification SBR was proposed to treat the immature landfill leachate. No extra carbon source was added at the beginning of anoxic stage, while real-time control was used during the aerobic stage to indicate the completion of nitrification. The results showed that outstanding nitrogen performance was obtained in the experimental period. The COD removal rate of more than 89% and 97% for TN were achieved under the influent COD and TN of 2117.1 mg·L−1and 305.6 mg·L−1, respectively, which realized the effluent TN concentration below 10 mg·L−1. PHB storing in the anaerobic and feast period of anoxic stage could be used as the internal carbon source for denitrification, which led to the average endogenous denitrification rate of 1.40 mgN·h-1·gVSS-1. Thus, advanced nitrogen removal was realized without extra carbon source addition.

Abstract:Landfill leachate has become a disaster in recent years because of high strength liquid compounds. We conducted biological treatment enhanced by chemical precipitation for COD and NH4-N removal through SSSAB and SBR in series. COD and NH4-N were determined before and after treatment in both SSSAB and SBR reactor for aerobic- anaerobic treatment prior to chemical precipitaion. We found out that SSSAB reported better NH4-N removal rates of 97.7% with reduced COD removal rate at 7.7 % in five samples. On the other hand, compared with 98% COD removal rates and 96.1% for SBR. SBR and SSSAB were efficient in removing NH4-N than COD. Chemical precipitation showed a novel impact on biological treatment. The quiet removal rates are related to the little aeration time to facilitate the completion of the nitrification process. Struvite precipitation contributed to a change in the Chemical oxygen demand and Ammonium nitrogen removal through the formation of calcium phosphate and reducing the inhibition of biological treatment in SSSAB. Efficient and advanced nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate via combining nitritation and denitritation with Anammox in a single sequencing batch biofilm reactor

Abstract:A novel combined partial nitrification-Anammox and partial denitrification-Anammox (PnA/PdA) single sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) was established to realize efficient and advanced nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate with low biodegradability. Nitrogen removal rate and nitrogen removal efficiency were increased to 2.83 ± 0.06 kgN/(m3∙d) and 98.6 ± 0.2% by stepwise increase of dissolved oxygen (DO, from 0.5 to 3.5 mg/L) and continuous carbon source feeding. Comparable activities of ammonia oxidation bacteria and Anammox bacteria were realized during aerobic period. More organic carbon was redirected from complete denitrification to partial denitrification during anoxic period. The main pathway PnA jointly synergized with PdA, which contributed to 76.04% and 19.44% nitrogen removal, respectively. Nitrosomonas, Thauera, and Kuenenia dominated in floc sludge (0.78%, 5.38%, and 1.14%, respectively) and biofilm (0.34%, 5.18%, and 0.98%, respectively). Overall, this study provides new insight into the high-efficiency treatment of landfill leachate at full-scale landfill sites.

Abstract:The pretreated landfill leachate was studied by SBR process in a pilot plant.The ability of SBR was examined to adapt to changes in water quality conditions.And the relevant technical indicators were determined.The results show that the SBR has good resistance to shock loading.The effluent COD is 500~750 mg/L when the influent COD is 3 100~5 600 mg/L.During normal operation,DO is controlled more than 4 mg/L,and COD volumetric loading is controlled below 2.0 kg/(m3·d).The removal rates of COD,NH3-N,TN and TP are 57.4%,65.1%,40.7% and 30.7%,respectively.
Comparative Study on Advanced Nitrogen Removal of Landfill Leachate Treated by SBR and SBBR

Abstract:In order to achieve advanced nitrogen removal from landfill leachate without the addition of external carbon sources, a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) and a Sequencing Biofilm Batch Reactor (SBBR) were proposed for the treatment of actual landfill leachate with ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations of 1000 ± 100 mg/L and 4000 ± 100 mg/L, respectively. The operating modes of both systems are anaerobic–aerobic–anoxic. After 110 days of start-up and biomass acclimation, the effluent COD and the total nitrogen (TN) of the two systems were 650 ± 50 mg/L and 20 ± 10 mg/L, respectively. The removal rates of COD and total nitrogen could reach around 85% and above 95%, respectively. Therefore, advanced nitrogen removal was implemented in landfill leachate without adding any carbon sources. After the two systems were acclimated, nitrogen removing cycles of SBR and SBBR were 24 h and 20 h, respectively. The nitrogen removing efficiency of SBBR was improved by 16.7% in comparison to SBR. In the typical cycle of the two groups of reactors, the nitrification time of the system was the same, which was 5.5 h, indicating that although the fiber filler occupied part of the reactor space, it had no significant impact on the nitrification performance of the system. At the end of aeration, the internal carbon source content of sludge of SBBR was equivalent to that of the SBR system. However, the total nitrogen concentration of SBBR was only 129 mg/L, which is 33.8% lower than that of SBR at 195 mg/L. The main reason was that biofilm enhanced the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) effect of the system.

Abstract:Traditional anaerobic and aerobic processes UASB and SBR combined with age refuse biofilter(ARF) and earthworm biofilter(EF) were tested for young leachate treatment sampled from Shanghai Laogang landfill balancing pond.Every unit in the combination processes has various functions for the removal of pollutants in MSW landfill leachate.About 35% of COD could be removed by UASB and the biogas could be reused as energy,while shortcut nitrification-denitrification in SBR was occurred to remove ammonia nitrogen at relatively low requirement of energy and carbon source.ARF and EF were performed as post-treatment to remove the left nitrogen and COD.Although about 99% of BOD_5 and NH~+_4-N removal rate can be obtained,remained COD in final effluent was still over 1000mg/L,therefore the physical-chemical processes are necessary to remove biorefractory substances such as humic substances.
