Abstract:As the requirements of aerospace technology become more rigorous, the performance of solid rocket motor (SRM) cases needs to be further optimized. In the present study, a co-curing technique was used to fabricate carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) composites whereby the properties of CFRP/EPDM composites were adjusted by varying the temperature, heating time and type of vulcanizing agent to obtain the optimum manufacturing process. The results of crosslink density (3.459 × 10-4 mol/cm3) tested by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), a 90° peel strength test (2.342 N/mm), and an interlaminar shear test (ILSS = 82.08 MPa) demonstrated that the optimum mechanical properties of composites were obtained under the temperature 160 °C heated for 20 min with the curing agent DCP/S. The interfacial phase and bonding mechanism of composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) further indicated that EPDM/DCP/S had favorable thermal stability. This will provide valuable recommendations for the optimization of the SRM shell preparation process.

Abstract:The multi-walled carbon nanotubes/resin epoxy composite was prepared and the composition and operating conditions were obtained. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to observe carbon nanotubes and the carbon nanotubes/resin epoxy composite. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubes/resin epoxy composite were measured by the experiments of tension and compression. The results show that carbon nanotubes could obviously improve the mechanical properties of the resin epoxy bulk material.

Abstract:In order to prepare a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composite (CFRP) with ideal microstructure and properties, a new vacuum pressure infiltration CFRP method is proposed based on an analysis of existing CFRP preparation process methods. Research on composite material preparation systems was carried out by using this new method principle. The system mainly includes a fiber pre-forming module, a vacuum heating infiltration module, a hot-press curing molding module, and a data acquisition control module. Under the conditions of natural curing at 0 MPa + 6 h + 25 °C, vacuum heating curing at –0.05 MPa + 30 min + 80 °C, and hot-press curing at 0.7 MPa + 5 min + 50 °C, a two-dimensional (2D) CFRP with excellent microstructure and properties was successfully prepared. Observing the microstructure of the prepared composite material, it can be found that the inside of the composite material was sufficiently and uniformly infiltrated, and common preparation defects such as holes and delamination were effectively controlled. Through the performance test, the bending strength of the material reached 790 MPa.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of composites are closely related to the interfacial behavior, especially under the hygrothermal circumstance. A catalytic sizing agent of titanium epoxy is designed to enhance interfacial, mechanical, and anti-hygrothermal properties of high modulus carbon fiber (HMCF)/cyanate ester composites simultaneously. The mechanisms of interface enhancement and low hygroscopicity of composites are investigated. The titanium epoxy is synthesized and its catalytic effect on the curing of cyanate ester is proved. The interfacial properties of HMCF composites with catalytic sizing agents are improved to 95.5 MPa, which is attributed to the interphase with high crosslinking density and sufficient triazine rings and oxazolidinone structure due to preferential curing induced by interfacial catalysis, stimulating the smooth transition of interphase modulus. Further, the formed interphase exhibits few interface defects and low content of hydroxyl groups, which changes the moisture diffusion path and reduces saturated water absorption of composites to only 0.36%, resulting in the release of interfacial wet stress concentration and high retention of mechanical properties in hygrothermal environment. The resultant composites with high stiffness, excellent temperature resistance, superior dimensional stability and low moisture absorption are expected to be applied to high-orbit space, aerospace, precision instruments.

Abstract:Recyclable carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to the combined merits of excellent mechanical and thermal properties, recyclability and reprocessability. This paper reports on the successful preparation of closed-loop recyclable CFRP by in-situ polymerization and dynamic cross-linking (ISPDC) technology. The SEM, XPS and monofilament tensile curves were measured to investigate the morphology, chemical details, and mechanical properties of the recycled carbon fiber (CF); the chemical structure of the degraded resin was further characterized and analyzed according to the NMR and FTIR spectra. The obtained results show that under mild acidic conditions, the CFRP was degraded to high-quality recycled CF and linear polymer with methacrylic acid units, which can be used to prepare regenerated CFRP. In addition, due to the dynamic feature of the hemiacetal ester structure in the CFRP matrix, the CFRP also exhibited multiple functions, such as rapid welding, reprocessing, shape shifting, and self-healing, as well as the extremely long shelf life of composite prepregs. Our analysis of the recycling and dynamic exchange processes indicates that the strategy of embedding a releasable linker is dominant for the preparation of closed-loop recyclable and multifunctional CFRP.

Abstract:A rapid curing resin system made from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy, modified imidazole (MIM) and modified aliphatic amine (MAA) was developed. The curing behavior and rheological characteristic of the resin were evaluated by DSC and rheological analysis respectively. The optimum ratio of the blending of curing agents was selected. The carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite laminates using this resin system were manufactured through vacuum assisted resin injection molding (VARIM) under short-term curing schedule. The processing quality and mechanical properties of the laminates were studied and compared with the properties of the laminates under traditional curing schedule. The results show that the curing time of the resin system is 5 min with 95% curing degree, and the cure time of the laminates using the studied resin can be controlled within 13 min under 120 °C with more than 95% curing degree and few defects. Compared with the laminates cured in traditional curing schedule (curing time more than 2 h), the laminates manufactured under short-term curing schedule exhibits slight decreases in the flexural property and thermal stability.

Abstract:CCF reinforced thermoset composite is cured without mold. And complex components were prepared to verify the feasibility and versatility of the method. To overcome the dependence of continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoset composites (CCFRTCs) on molds during the curing, a thermoset continuous fiber prepreg filament and thermoplastic filament alternate printing method was proposed. CCFRTCs with thin thermoplastic shells were prepared based on the method, and the confinement of thermoplastic shells enabled the mold‐less curing of CCFRTCs. The influence of key curing process parameters on the flexural properties of the specimens was systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that the flexural properties of the prepared composites were correlated positively with the vacuum degree and showed a tendency of first increasing and then decreasing with the increasement of impregnation time and curing temperature. Through x‐ray computed tomography (CT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, the effect of key curing process parameters on the flexural properties of the CCFRTCs was clarified. Under the guidance of suitable curing process parameters, the flexural strength and modulus of the composite reached 482.89 MPa and 35.11 GPa, which were significantly better than most existing 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Finally, complex components were prepared to verify the feasibility and versatility of the technique. Highlights A CCFRTCs mold‐less curing method was proposed. The effect of key parameters on the properties of CCFRTCs was clarified. Both the advantages of thermoset and thermoplastic materials were obtained. Complex components with low porosity were prepared.

Abstract:Rapid solidification molding is one of the main low‐cost forming methods for composite materials, and the reasonable selection of the solidification molding process is the key to achieving material performance. The curing system used in this paper is the widely used, inexpensive, and readily available epoxy resin (WSR618) and the transparent, colorless, and less toxic 593 curing agent, which cures at room temperature. Through the study of various temperature formulations, a rapid curing system was determined that has a 10‐min cure at 80°C. The results showed that when the mass ratio of epoxy (EP) resin to curing agent was 5:1, the curing system was selected at 80°C for 10 min, and the bending strength could reach 100.19 MPa, and the impact strength could reach 12.82 kJ/m2. However, the difficulty caused by quick solidification was a reduction in mechanical characteristics, which required modification. Microcrystalline cellulose is cheap and readily available and widely available, so microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was chosen for modification in this study. The experimental results showed that the addition of MCC reduced the fracture brittleness of EP composite materials. When 0.75% MCC was added, the bending and tensile strengths reached 116.88 and 52.53 MPa, respectively, which were 16.66% and 18.74% higher than unmodified EP. The elongation at break reached 11.57%, which is 14.13% higher than unmodified.

Abstract:In this study a new method was applied to form crosslinking networks in the ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) matrix with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles, which were chemically treated with acrylic acid (AA). The tensile test showed that the tensile strength and the elongation at break of the composites were improved significantly, and that when the content of CaCO3 was about 20 wt% in the composites the maximum tensile properties were achieved. The results of swell and solution tests showed that the composites had an evident crosslinking structure. The results of ATR-FTIR spectrum proved that the acid-base reaction between CaCO3 and AA had occurred. The SEM photos show that an interfacial adhesion between CaCO3 and copolymer was good. The TGA curves show that the composites had a new change in mass between 650 degrees C and 750 degrees C, which might be the decomposition temperature of calcium acrylic acid.

Abstract:To satisfy the light weight requirements of vehicles owing to the aggravation of environmental pollution, carbon-fiber (CF)-reinforced epoxy composites have been chosen as a substitute for traditional metal counterparts. Since the current processing methods such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and compression molding (CM) have many limitations, an integrated and optimal molding method needs to be developed. Herein, we prepared high-performance composites by an optimized molding method, namely compression resin transfer molding (CRTM), which combines the traditional RTM and CM selectively and comprehensively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rotational rheometry were performed to optimize the molding parameters of CRTM. In addition, metallurgical microscopy test and mechanical tests were performed to evaluate the applicability of CRTM. The experimental results showed that the composites prepared by CRTM displayed superior mechanical properties than those of the composites prepared by RTM and CM. The composite prepared by CRTM showed up to 42.9%, 41.2%, 77.3%, and 5.3% increases in tensile strength, bending strength, interlaminar shear strength, and volume fraction, respectively, of the composites prepared by RTM. Meanwhile, the porosity decreased by 45.2 %.

Abstract:A novel 3D printing method for continuous carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting epoxy resin composites (CCFRTC) was proposed, including CCFRTC prepreg filament manufacturing, secondary impregnation, printing and curing stages. Through the addition of an impregnation stage before printing, this method ensures a close interface bond and uniform distribution of fibers and resin. After testing, the average tensile strength and tensile modulus of the uncured pre-impregnated continuous filaments were found to be 968 MPa and 58.6 GPa, respectively. Mechanical testing of the specimens revealed that the maximum tensile strength and flexural strength of the CCFRTC specimens reached 825 MPa and 557 MPa, with tensile and flexural modulus measuring 157 GPa and 185 GPa. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination of the cross-sections indicated a highly uniform impregnation of both the filaments and printed specimens. In conclusion, the method proposed in this study enables the preparation and printing of continuous fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin composite materials, addressing the issues of inadequate impregnation and poor interfacial bonding performance in continuous carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin composite materials. These findings may broaden the potential applications of 3D printing CCFRTC in the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries.

Abstract:Numerical models of multi-layer composite laminates with various fiber orientations and fiber layers were investigated under adhesively bonded repair condition by ABAQUS. Stress intensity factors (SIF) of bonded structure systems were calculated by J integral method. Results indicated that composite laminate with [90/90/90] fiber orientation and three fiber layers exhibited the lowest numerical SIF value. The laminates reinforced by carbon fiber with corresponding orientation were experimentally prepared in a two-step high-pressure microwave curing and traditional thermal curing methods on the basis of simulated results, respectively. Mechanical and curing properties of laminates prepared by two curing methods were characterized and compared by means of tensile tests and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In comparison to the thermal curing method, the laminate can be prepared more effectively by means of microwave curing method, and the laminate with [90/90/90] fiber orientation and three fiber layers showed the optimal static mechanical performance and the highest curing degree due to the synergistic effect of dipolar induced effect and heating effect generated by microwave, which was in well agreement with the results of numerical simulation.

Abstract:Graphene/carbon fiber/epoxy composites were prepared by autoclave co-curing molding process with graphene prepregs as the functional layer, which were paved on the surface of carbon fiber perform. The effect of graphene prepregs on the internal quality, electromagnetic interference shielding performance and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated by ultrasound scanner, metallograph, four-probe instrument, vector network analyzer and electronic universal material testing machine. The results show that the internal quality of the graphene/carbon fiber/epoxy composites will not be influenced by the addition of graphene prepregs, and there are a good interfacial compatibility between graphene functional layer and carbon fiber structural layer. On this basis, graphene prepregs, which serves as the functional layer, taking advantage of excellent electrical conductivity, can improve the electromagnetic interference shielding performance of the corresponding composites rapidly. With only one layer of graphene prepreg (G105/3234), electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of carbon fiber/epoxy composites is improved from 27. 7 dB to 64. 7 dB. Meanwhile, the obtained composites still maintain satisfactory mechanical properties.
Fully recyclable and high-performance carbon fiber composites based on thermoplastic epoxy polymer

Abstract:In this paper, a linear and highly polymerized thermoplastic epoxy (TPE) is treated as the matrix to prepare the fully recyclable and high performance carbon fiber reinforced TPE composites (CFRTPE). The TPE is synthesized from bisphenol A epoxy and aniline through a simple polymerization process, whose mechanical and thermal properties (tensile strength: 65 MPa, tensile modulus: 2.3 GPa, initial decomposition temperature: 365.4 °C) are comparable to that of traditional bisphenol A epoxy based thermoset. The CFRTPE composites samples could be prepared by prepreg through molding and vacuum bag method with the mild conditions (180 °C for 20 min). The mechanical and thermomechanical properties testing results show that the CFRTPE could achieve comparable and even better mechanical performance compared with the reference specimen and literature reports. Most importantly, both the full-length CFs and TPE of CFRTPE composites could be recycled conveniently and rapidly at room temperature without damaging the morphologies and mechanical properties, which indicates promising potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. In this work, the effects of different fiber wettability on resin impregnation during vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process and subsequent interface properties were comprehensively investigated. The fabrics with different surface morphology and wettability were successfully obtained via tuning the concentration of epoxy sizing agents. Results indicate that a low void content of less than 1% is achieved with the improvement of fiber wettability. Additionally, the interlayer property of composites is significantly improved by ∼12%. It is attributed to improved impregnation and capillary number, achieved by optimizing the dual-scale flow of resin in the preform via reducing the contact angle. Achieving equilibrium of dual-scale flow is an important factor in minimizing voids within the CFRP laminate. Furthermore, the introduction of epoxy functional groups significantly enhances interfacial bonding, contributing to an increase in the interlaminar shear strength of CFRP composites. This improvement effectively improves stress concentration by dispersing crack propagation. The findings in this work provide significant information for designing CFRP composites with superior mechanical properties via adjusting fiber wettability.

Abstract:Epoxy resins containing dynamic covalent networks enable recycling of carbon fiber composites. However, simultaneous realization of high performance and mild condition recycling of composites is still a challenge. In the present work, we mixed citric acid epoxy resin with bisphenol A epoxy resin to form a hybrid resin (DER) that meets the requirements of medium temperature curing epoxy resin, and prepared a carbon fiber reinforced resin composite material (DER@CF) that can rapidly degrade and recycle carbon fibers under mild conditions. The Tg of the DER was 125.67 °C, and the tensile strength (79.63 MPa) was comparable to that of the bisphenol A epoxy resin (79.90 MPa). It degraded rapidly after 2 h in ethylene glycol (EG) solution at 120 °C. The tensile strength of DER@CF was 825 MPa, and clean fibers could be obtained after 8 h of treatment in EG solution at 120 °C. The results of SEM, Raman, and tensile tests showed that the recycled fibers were similar to the original fibers in terms of morphology, chemical structure, and mechanical properties. Abstract:The frontal polymerization (FP) of carbon/epoxy (C/Ep) composites is investigated, considering FP as a viable route for the additive manufacturing (AM) of thermoset composites. Neat epoxy (Ep) resin-, short carbon fiber (SCF)-, and continuous carbon fiber (CCF)-reinforced composites are considered in this study. The evolution of the exothermic reaction temperature, polymerization frontal velocity, degree of cure, microstructures, effects of fiber concentration, fracture surface, and thermal and mechanical properties are investigated. The results show that exothermic reaction temperatures range between 110 °C and 153 °C, while the initial excitation temperatures range from 150 °C to 270 °C. It is observed that a higher fiber content increases cure time and decreases average frontal velocity, particularly in low SCF concentrations. This occurs because resin content, which predominantly drives the exothermic reaction, decreases with increased fiber content. The FP velocities of neat Ep resin- and SCF-reinforced composites are seen to be 0.58 and 0.50 mm/s, respectively. The maximum FP velocity (0.64 mm/s) is observed in CCF/Ep composites. The degree of cure (αc) is observed to be in the range of 70% to 85% in FP-processed composites. Such a range of αc is significantly low in comparison to traditional composites processed through a long cure cycle. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of neat epoxy resin is seen to be approximately 154 °C, and it reduces slightly to a lower value (149 °C) for SCF-reinforced composites. The microstructures show significantly high void contents (12%) and large internal cracks. These internal cracks are initiated due to high thermal residual stress developed during curing for non-uniform temperature distribution. The tensile properties of FP-cured samples are seen to be inferior in comparison to autoclave-processed neat epoxy. This occurs mostly due to the presence of large void contents, internal cracks, and a poor degree of cure. Finally, a highly efficient and controlled FP method is desirable to achieve a defect-free microstructure with improved mechanical and thermal properties.

Abstract:Polydicyclopentadiene can significantly improve the fracture toughness of the anhydride cured‐epoxy resin, and this improvement can be effectively transferred to the improvement of interlaminar mode I fracture toughness of the carbon fiber composites via VARI process. In this work, a dicyclopentadiene monomer/Grubbs 2 catalyst was added to a mixture of epoxy oligomers and methyl nadic anhydride to obtain a poly‐dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) modified epoxy cross‐linked network via sequential curing. The hybrid resin was used as a matrix for preparing carbon fiber composites. The results indicated that the addition of DCPD monomers significantly reduced the viscosity of the epoxy resin. The toughness and heat resistance of the co‐cured resin was improved without significant loss of strength, which was attributed to the high compatibility between epoxy and the modifier polymer. Regarding the composites, the flexural strength of the hybrid resin‐derived composite first increased and then diminished slightly. Meanwhile, the mode‐I interlaminar fracture toughness continued to increase with the increase of PDCPD content compared to the non‐modified composites. Generally, the change trend of the above properties in the composites was consistent with the change trend of the strength and toughness exhibited in the bulk resin with increasing PDCPD contents, while the change extent was inconsistent due to factors such as fiber volume content and interfacial bonding. Highlights The epoxy/PDCPD hybrid resin system was obtained via sequential curing. The PDCPD as modifier can reduce the viscosity of the epoxy curing system. The toughness and heat resistance of the PDCPD modified epoxy resin was improved. The loss in flexural strength of the hybrid resin system was insignificant. The GIC of the epoxy composites modified with PDCPD improved appreciably.

Abstract:Bio‐based degradable CF/DEPVD‐E51‐DDS composites were successfully prepared by the RTM process. When the DEPVD content is 70%, the tensile and flexural strength of CF/EPVD‐E51‐DDS composites are 1649.4 MPa and 1207.4 MPa, respectively. CF/DEPVD‐E51‐DDS composites containing 70% DEPVD have excellent degradability, and the recycled CFs exhibit comparable mechanical properties to the virgin CFs, which demonstrates a novel way to recover the high‐quality of used CFs. The recycling of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced bio‐based degradable epoxy resin composites is of great significance for resource saving, environment protection and sustainable development of economy and society. Resin transfer molding (RTM) has been recognized as one of the most promising processes to manufacture CF Reinforced polymeric composites cost‐effectively. The bio‐based diglycidyl ether pentaerythritol vanillin diacetal (DEPVD) epoxy resin used in this study is an epoxy resin that can be degradable under mild conditions. And its CF composites were prepared by the RTM process using DDS as a curing agent and low viscosity bisphenol A‐E51 epoxy resin as a diluent. The chemical rheological properties, curing behavior, thermal stability, dynamic viscoelasticity and mechanical properties of DDS‐E51‐DDS epoxy resin were investigated. It is found that the increase of DEPVD content is beneficial to improve the mechanical properties, Tg and solid residue after thermal degradation of DEPVD‐E51‐DDS epoxy resin. Moreover, the effects of DEPVD content in epoxy resin on the mechanical properties of CF/DEPVD‐E51‐DDS composites were evaluated. When the DEPVD content is 70%, the tensile and flexural strength of CF/EPVD‐E51‐DDS composites are 1649.4 MPa and 1207.4 MPa, respectively. The degradability and mechanism of CF/DEPVD‐E51‐DDS composites were further investigated. CF/DEPVD‐E51‐DDS composites containing 70% DEPVD have excellent degradability, and the recycled CFs exhibit comparable mechanical properties to the virgin CFs, which demonstrates a novel way to recover the high‐quality of used CFs.
