Abstract:Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) resins are manufactured commercially using Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) process. DCPD has valuable properties with good impact resistance, low temperature resistance and water-resisting. In particular the impact properties are much better than epoxy resins. The application of DCPD resins includes forklift, fork crane, dump truck and heavy vehicles. The manufacturing time need to be reduced and the mechanical properties of DCPD resin also can be improved by adding reinforcement materials. In this work, compression molding method was used to improve mechanical properties of DCPD. The optimum curing conditions of DCPD were investigated with pressure, temperature, and stirring time and speed in the curing conditions. In addition, the mechanical property of DPCD was improved by adding reinforcement such as carbon fiber and glass fiber. After mechanical measurement at different conditions, the optimum curing condition of DCPD resin was obtained as 80 similar to 100 C in temperature, 15 psi in pressure, 200 rpm in stirring speed and 70 seconds in stirring time. After adding reinforcement materials such as chop carbon and glass fiber, the DCPD composites exhibited even worse mechanical properties. Surface treatment of reinforcing fibers and modification of DCPD catalysts should be studied continuously.

Abstract:To satisfy the light weight requirements of vehicles owing to the aggravation of environmental pollution, carbon-fiber (CF)-reinforced epoxy composites have been chosen as a substitute for traditional metal counterparts. Since the current processing methods such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and compression molding (CM) have many limitations, an integrated and optimal molding method needs to be developed. Herein, we prepared high-performance composites by an optimized molding method, namely compression resin transfer molding (CRTM), which combines the traditional RTM and CM selectively and comprehensively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rotational rheometry were performed to optimize the molding parameters of CRTM. In addition, metallurgical microscopy test and mechanical tests were performed to evaluate the applicability of CRTM. The experimental results showed that the composites prepared by CRTM displayed superior mechanical properties than those of the composites prepared by RTM and CM. The composite prepared by CRTM showed up to 42.9%, 41.2%, 77.3%, and 5.3% increases in tensile strength, bending strength, interlaminar shear strength, and volume fraction, respectively, of the composites prepared by RTM. Meanwhile, the porosity decreased by 45.2 %.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of composites are closely related to the interfacial behavior, especially under the hygrothermal circumstance. A catalytic sizing agent of titanium epoxy is designed to enhance interfacial, mechanical, and anti-hygrothermal properties of high modulus carbon fiber (HMCF)/cyanate ester composites simultaneously. The mechanisms of interface enhancement and low hygroscopicity of composites are investigated. The titanium epoxy is synthesized and its catalytic effect on the curing of cyanate ester is proved. The interfacial properties of HMCF composites with catalytic sizing agents are improved to 95.5 MPa, which is attributed to the interphase with high crosslinking density and sufficient triazine rings and oxazolidinone structure due to preferential curing induced by interfacial catalysis, stimulating the smooth transition of interphase modulus. Further, the formed interphase exhibits few interface defects and low content of hydroxyl groups, which changes the moisture diffusion path and reduces saturated water absorption of composites to only 0.36%, resulting in the release of interfacial wet stress concentration and high retention of mechanical properties in hygrothermal environment. The resultant composites with high stiffness, excellent temperature resistance, superior dimensional stability and low moisture absorption are expected to be applied to high-orbit space, aerospace, precision instruments.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in modern industry. However, poor heat transfer between layers of carbon fiber cloth during the curing process leading to poor curing of the substrate, long curing cycles, and excessive heat accumulation has become an urgent problem to be solved. A common approach is dispersing highly thermally conductive fillers in the polymer matrix to improve the curing efficiency of the composites. Different from adding fillers, we report a novel method of in situ growth of SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) on the surface of carbon fiber (CF) by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and study the effects of CVD deposition time on curing efficiency and thermal stability of the composites. The results indicate that the nano bridge effect of SiCNWs significantly improves the curing efficiency of the composites. Compared with pure CF/epoxy composites, the curing efficiency can be increased by 38.72%. The cross-linking point between SiCNWs and the resin matrix enhances the thermal stability of the composites and increases the heat resistance index (THRI) by 8.4°C.

Abstract:In order to prepare a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composite (CFRP) with ideal microstructure and properties, a new vacuum pressure infiltration CFRP method is proposed based on an analysis of existing CFRP preparation process methods. Research on composite material preparation systems was carried out by using this new method principle. The system mainly includes a fiber pre-forming module, a vacuum heating infiltration module, a hot-press curing molding module, and a data acquisition control module. Under the conditions of natural curing at 0 MPa + 6 h + 25 °C, vacuum heating curing at –0.05 MPa + 30 min + 80 °C, and hot-press curing at 0.7 MPa + 5 min + 50 °C, a two-dimensional (2D) CFRP with excellent microstructure and properties was successfully prepared. Observing the microstructure of the prepared composite material, it can be found that the inside of the composite material was sufficiently and uniformly infiltrated, and common preparation defects such as holes and delamination were effectively controlled. Through the performance test, the bending strength of the material reached 790 MPa.

Abstract:Compared with the conventional composite curing processes, high-pressure microwave curing is a promising technology. In this study, a set of devices for high-pressure microwave curing was built and equipped with real-time temperature measurement capability and a microwave input control system. The orthogonal experimental method was applied to optimize three process parameters, including the heating rate, curing temperature, and holding time, for the high-pressure microwave curing of T800/X850 composites. The effects of the three parameters on the curing quality were studied by measuring the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and conducting differential scanning calorimeter tests. The fracture surface of the samples was also examined by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the heating rate had a significant effect on the ILSS of the laminates, and the degree of cure of all samples was more than 95% in the tests. Furthermore, the optimal process parameters were determined as follows: heat up to 170°C with a heating rate of 6°C min −1 and a holding time of 90 min. The total curing time of the sample was 42.4%, and the ILSS of the sample was slightly enhanced by 0.31% compared with standard thermal curing. These results could serve to make trade-offs between reducing manufacturing time and preserving the mechanical properties of microwave-cured composites.

Abstract:Continuous carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites have excellent mechanical properties, but their processing techniques are limited. Therefore, we promoted a braiding method based on the hybrid fiber method by hot-compacting CF/PEEK plain weave fabrics to solve the problem of difficult wetting between CF and PEEK. Four parameters—melting temperature, molding pressure, crystallization temperature and the resin contents—were investigated for optimized fabrication. After studying the melting range, thermal stability and the contact angle of PEEK under different temperatures, the melting temperature was set at 370 °C. An ultra-depth-of-field 3D microscope was adopted to investigate the effects of molding pressure in the melting stage. The tensile strength or modulus along and perpendicular to the carbon fiber direction and crystallinity under different crystallization temperatures were analyzed. As a result, the sample crystalized at 300 °C showed an excellent tensile properties and crystallinity. The increased mass ratio of PEEK ranging from 50.45% to 59.07% allowed for much stronger interfacial strength; however, the higher resin content can lead to the dispersion of CFs, loss of resin and the formation of defects during processing. Finally, the optimal resin mass content was 59.07%, with a tensile strength of 738.36 ± 14.49 MPa and a flexural strength of 659.68 ± 57.53 MPa. This paper studied the optimized processing parameters to obtain better properties from CF/PEEK plain weave fabrics and to further broaden the specific applications of CF/PEEK composites, demonstrating a new direction for its fabrication.

Abstract:Rapid solidification molding is one of the main low‐cost forming methods for composite materials, and the reasonable selection of the solidification molding process is the key to achieving material performance. The curing system used in this paper is the widely used, inexpensive, and readily available epoxy resin (WSR618) and the transparent, colorless, and less toxic 593 curing agent, which cures at room temperature. Through the study of various temperature formulations, a rapid curing system was determined that has a 10‐min cure at 80°C. The results showed that when the mass ratio of epoxy (EP) resin to curing agent was 5:1, the curing system was selected at 80°C for 10 min, and the bending strength could reach 100.19 MPa, and the impact strength could reach 12.82 kJ/m2. However, the difficulty caused by quick solidification was a reduction in mechanical characteristics, which required modification. Microcrystalline cellulose is cheap and readily available and widely available, so microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was chosen for modification in this study. The experimental results showed that the addition of MCC reduced the fracture brittleness of EP composite materials. When 0.75% MCC was added, the bending and tensile strengths reached 116.88 and 52.53 MPa, respectively, which were 16.66% and 18.74% higher than unmodified EP. The elongation at break reached 11.57%, which is 14.13% higher than unmodified.

Abstract:The structure and properties of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) depend on main factors, especially the unpredictable interface. In this work, a kind of thiocarbonyl disulfide compound is introduced to achieve the catalyzed-cure of phenylethynyl terminated polyimide (PI) and plays the role of coupling medium to constitute covalent-bonded structure at the PI/CF interface. The organocatalyzed cure not only follows the free radical mechanism with an initial curing temperature down to 260.4 °C, but also endows the composite with reduced internal thermal stress and enhanced interface structure. Due to both CF surface-initiated free radical curing reaction and coupling reaction between thiocarbonyl-containing PI matrix and hydroxyl-rich sizing layer, the composite performs an improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of 123.9 MPa, being 2.47 times as the thermally cured ones, plus the anti-bacterial reinforcement of the PI matrix. Besides, the interface enhancement brings the CFRC specimen improved electrical properties, performing a 92.6% increase of transverse electrical conductivity to 367.6 S/m. This study gives perspective for improving the interfacial performance of high-temperature processed CFRC with "as-received" fiber reinforcers, plus a clear outlook to future research directions and open challenges to prepare high-performance CFRC.

Abstract:Numerical models of multi-layer composite laminates with various fiber orientations and fiber layers were investigated under adhesively bonded repair condition by ABAQUS. Stress intensity factors (SIF) of bonded structure systems were calculated by J integral method. Results indicated that composite laminate with [90/90/90] fiber orientation and three fiber layers exhibited the lowest numerical SIF value. The laminates reinforced by carbon fiber with corresponding orientation were experimentally prepared in a two-step high-pressure microwave curing and traditional thermal curing methods on the basis of simulated results, respectively. Mechanical and curing properties of laminates prepared by two curing methods were characterized and compared by means of tensile tests and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In comparison to the thermal curing method, the laminate can be prepared more effectively by means of microwave curing method, and the laminate with [90/90/90] fiber orientation and three fiber layers showed the optimal static mechanical performance and the highest curing degree due to the synergistic effect of dipolar induced effect and heating effect generated by microwave, which was in well agreement with the results of numerical simulation.

Abstract:Thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of carbon fabric/resin laminated composites containing carbon fiber powder with different densities. Carbon fabric/resin laminated composites (CFRC) are extensively used in aerospace, transportation, and other fields owing to their superiorities of lightweight, high strength, and convenient integral molding. Therefore, strong interlaminar binding and prominent wear resistance are urgent requirements for avoiding premature failure of laminated materials in harsh working environments. To elevate the superficial wear resistance and interlaminar bonding strength of composites simultaneously, the modified composites were obtained by introducing carbon fiber powder (CFP) with different densities on the surface of the composites and between layers. The experimental results indicate that CFP can be evenly distributed in the interlaminar resin enrichment zone of the sample (CFRC‐40) when the deposition density is 40 g/m2. Consequently, CFRC‐40 presents optimal thermal conductivity owing to better heat transfer bridges between layers of the composite established by CFP. At the same time, the mechanical properties such as the tensile, impact, and interlaminar shear strengths of CFRC‐40 are improved by 42.8%, 10.2%, and 8.5%, respectively, compared with the original CFRC, which are attributed to the absorption of crack propagation energy and the inhibition of crack propagation by CFP. Furthermore, the dynamic friction coefficient maintains at a high level after introducing CFP with a density of 40 g/m2, while the wear rate significantly decreases by 61.2% from 12.99 × 10−14 m3(N m)−1 to 5.04 × 10−14 m3(N m)−1. This study proposes an innovative strategy to improve the interlaminar bonding of carbon fabric/resin laminated composite, which is conducive to obtaining composite with excellent mechanical and tribological properties. Highlights A facile and effectual method was adopted to introduce carbon fiber powder (CFP) into the interlamination and surface of the composites simultaneously. The mechanical properties and abrasive resistance of the composites were obviously strengthened by regulating the content and distribution of CFP. CFP at a certain scale, could not only hinder the propagation of cracks but also alleviate the surface wear and extend the service life of composites.

Abstract:Extreme environments in aerospace require structural materials to have good heat transfer properties. Aiming at ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductivity (TC) and mechanical strength, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates were prepared by combining PAN-based (CF) and pitch-based carbon fibers (H-CF) prepregs through hot-pressing method. The 0 degrees tensile strength and modulus of [H-CF6/CF11](T) can reach 1400 MPa and 297 GPa, respectively. High interlaminar shear strength (78.58 MPa) and ultrahigh in-plane TC (223 Wm(-1)K(-1)) are also obtained. Mechanical properties can be enhanced by heterogeneous structure design due to the decrease of number of weak epoxy/cyanate interfaces. We find that the heterogeneous structure can lead to a higher TC. Finite element simulation results confirm that heterogeneous structure is beneficial to the surface heat transfer under localized surface heating. This circumstance is favorable for the protection of devices from overheating when the CFRP is used as shell of aerospace vehicles.

Abstract:The carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) tubular structure is suitable for aircraft and aerospace applications requiring strong axial strength and moderate thermal expansion. However, utilizing CFRP tubular constructions necessitates the addition of end-fitting components, which introduces new problems, such as adhesion. This study presented a novel two-step sheet-winding compression-molding (SWCM) process for fabricating integral thermosetting CFRP tubular-bar structure elements, which could be further drilled into a tubular-lug structural element. The influence of the proposed SWCM technique on the curing of the epoxy prepregs is demonstrated to be minor. The mechanical characteristics of SWCM specimens are much superior to those of control autoclave samples. The investigation of morphology provides a discussion and assumptions regarding the enhancement mechanism. It is considered that the advantage of SWCM specimens is that the particular wrapped edge suppresses the effect of free-edge delamination. This study provides a valuable guideline for designing and fabricating tubular-lug structural components.

The optimization of post-curing processes is crucial for enhancing the performance of epoxy-based fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) by ensuring adequate cross-linking. This study focuses on optimizing the post-curing parameters for hybrid Ramie and Carbon fiber composites with the primary objective of improving tensile strength. Variations in post-curing temperature, post-curing time, and the number of synthetic fiber layers were systematically investigated across three levels using Taguchi design of experiments. The ultimate tensile stress was employed as the response parameter. Results indicate that post-curing temperature exerts a greater influence on tensile strength compared to post-curing time. A failure pattern of natural fiber followed by synthetic fibers was seen to happen progressively. A precise multivariable regression model was developed to predict the response for different combinations of post-curing parameters. Furthermore, employing particle swarm optimization revealed an optimal post-curing time of 12 h and an optimal temperature of 60°C. These findings contribute to the optimization of post-curing processes in hybrid fiber composites, thereby enhancing their mechanical properties.

Abstract:Degumming, chemical oxidation, and surface modification processes of carbon fibers (CFs), and printing of CF/photopolymer composites. Light‐curing rapid prototyping (SLA) has become an emerging technology in the manufacturing industry because of its high precision, rapid prototyping, and the ability to mold complex parts. To enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of its raw material photosensitive resin (PR), carbon fiber (CF) was surface modified by chemical oxidation and grafting of amino silane (KH550) to obtain KH550‐modified carbon fiber (ACF). Then, ACF was composited with photosensitive resin to obtain modified carbon fiber/photosensitive resin (ACF/PR) composites. The viscosities of ACF/PR composites, including the viscosity, curing shrinkage, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the ACF/PR composites, were characterized. The results showed that KH550 was successfully grafted onto CF. When the addition of ACF in the composites was 0.6%, the tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength of ACF/PR reached 39.48 MPa, 20.32%, and 13.62 kJ/m2, which were 120%, 27.15%, and 154% higher than that of the pure resin; the thermal decomposition temperatures and the maximum thermal decomposition temperatures at 50% mass loss of ACF/PR increased to 457.66°C and 442.44°C at 50% mass loss, which is 3.95% and 3.63% higher than that of the pure resin. Currently, the composites have excellent strength, toughness, and thermal stability. This paper gives a cost‐efficient method for improving the functioning of PR. Abstract:In the research presented in this paper, the influence of the manufacturing process conditions on the elastic-plastic mechanical behavior of laminate structures made of metal skin (MS) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) core is investigated by means of laboratory experiments. The specimens are realized with 0.4 mm thick AISI-304 sheets, ±45° high modulus carbon fibers woven for the core (8 x 0.25 mm layers stacked) with a thin interlayer made of Loctite EA9460 epoxy adhesive utilized to increase to joining strength between steel skins and CFRP core. The MS-CFRP plates have been manufactured by means of curing-by-forming process considering the following levels for the DoE analysis: i) mold temperature: 130 °C, 150 °C and 170 °C; curing pressure: 4000 kgf, 6000 kgf, and 8000 kgf; and curing time: 10 min., 15min. and 20min., respectively. The manufactured plates have been cut by waterjet process and tested by means of 3-point bending tests, allowing to correlate the above-mentioned process parameters to the mechanical properties of the material. The results have been summarized in processing maps those allow predicting the mechanical properties of the material according to the process parameters utilized in the curing-by-forming process. Finally, based on previous research results, the improvement of the specific mechanical properties of the MS-CFRP structures, in comparison to monolithic AISI-304 steel, have been calculated showing an improvement ranging between 115.5% and 122.4%, for the flexural stiffness and in 306.0% and 569.7% for the failure stress, respectively, depending on the process parameters.

Experimental Study of Curing Temperature Effect on Mechanical Performance of Carbon Fiber Composites with Application to Filament Winding Pressure Vessel Design

Abstract:During the forming process of carbon fiber composite pressure vessels, the parameters of the curing and forming processes become one of the critical factors affecting the production cost and forming quality. The curing temperature of 4251 A4/B2 epoxy resin is measured in this research, and the effect of curing temperature on the mechanical properties of composite materials for winding is studied, which is finally verified in the test of pressure vessels. First, the actual curing temperature of the epoxy resin is tested and analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Second, under two different curing regimes, the tensile and flexural properties are tested by making pure epoxy resin matrix test pieces, Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL) rings, and carbon fiber composite unidirectional plates that affect the overall performance of composite pressure vessels. At the same time, the test results provide reliable process parameters for numerical simulation and manufacturing of pressure vessels. Finally, the filament-wound 35 MPa type III pressure vessel is cured and carried out using a hydraulic burst test. The results show the resin matrix has good fluidity and excellent interface bonding with carbon fiber when the curing temperature is 112 °C. Compared with the results in curing temperature of 100 °C, the tensile strength of the NOL ring reaches 2260.8 MPa, up by 22%. In the 90° direction, the tensile and flexural strengths of the unidirectional plates increase by 68.86% and 37.42%, respectively. In the 0° direction, the tensile and flexural strengths of the unidirectional plates increase by 5.82% and 1.16%, respectively. The pressure vessel bursting form is reasonable and meets the CGH2R standard. The bursting pressure of the vessel is up to 104.4 MPa, which verifies the rationality of the curing regime used in the curing process of the pressure vessel. Based on the results of this paper, the curing temperature affects the fluidity of the epoxy resin, which in turn affects the interfacial bonding properties of the composite, and the forming quality of the wound components and the pressure vessel, ultimately. When using 4251A4/B2 epoxy resin for wet winding pressure vessels, the choice of a 112 °C curing temperature will help improve the vessel's overall performance. This work could provide reliable experience and insight into the curing process analysis of pressure vessel manufacturing.
