Abstract:The article focuses on flat earthism, one of the most well-known contemporary conspiracy theories in popular culture. According to proponents of this theory, which has found a growing international following in recent years, political institutions such as the U.S. government and scientific institutions such as NASA would operate to deceive humanity about the real shape of our planet and the universe in which we live. In countering the data acquired by modern science and common sense knowledge, flat earthism stands as a heterodox theory and a radical critique of the authority of socially legitimized epistemic institutions. This article consists of two parts. The first part will offer a genealogical reconstruction of the flat-earth conspiracy, tracing its history from the 19th century to the exponents of the current movement. The second part will delve into the discourse of the proponents of flat earthism with specific reference to the Italian context, through documentary analysis of recent publications and online material available on YouTube and Telegram, which constitute some of the main channels for the discussion and dissemination of flat earthism in Italy today. On the basis of the data collected and analyzed, it will be shown how flat earthism represents a paradigmatic case of superconspiracy, that is, of a far-reaching theory capable of linking and including within itself a set of other, more circumscribed theories. To this end, flat earthism elaborates on a discourse that ambivalently combines two registers, scientific and religious language, proposing itself as a dissident narrative that if on the one hand rejects the knowledge of institutionalized and organized science and religion, on the other hand accredits an alternative and anti-intellectualist path of knowledge, accessible to the “common man” that aims to create a space of autonomy and opposition to the processes of secularization and globalization in which the flat earthers see the project of building a dystopian New World Order.

Abstract:In this paper we present a critical analysis of some of the arguments of flat Earth theory, and we also try to show that this analysis and refutation of these false claims can be a useful exercise in critical thinking that is so much needed today. This article can also make it easier for teachers who are exposed to some of the arguments of flat Earth theory by their students. Some arguments of this theory are completely senseless, and some can simply be disproved by trigonometry or basic physical laws.

Abstract:Conspiracy theories related to flat-earthism have gained traction on Brazilian Telegram, especially in times of global crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when distrust in scientific and governmental institutions has intensified. Therefore, this study aims to address the research question: how are Brazilian conspiracy theory communities on flat earth topics characterized and articulated on Telegram? It is worth noting that this study is part of a series of seven studies whose main objective is to understand and characterize Brazilian conspiracy theory communities on Telegram. This series of seven studies is openly and originally available on arXiv at Cornell University, applying a mirrored method across the seven studies, changing only the thematic object of analysis and providing investigation replicability, including with proprietary and authored codes, adding to the culture of free and open-source software. Regarding the main findings of this study, the following were observed: During the Pandemic, flat-earthist discussions increased by 400%, driven by distrust in scientific institutions; Flat-Earther communities act as portals for other conspiracy theories, such as the New World Order; Although smaller, the flat-Earther network has influential groups that disseminate content and perpetuate narratives; Religious themes such as God and the Bible are central, combining religious elements with distrust in science; Flat-Earther communities use themes such as gravity to challenge established scientific concepts, reinforcing an alternative view of the world.

Abstract:To build insight into the atmosphere and ocean, it is useful to apply qualitative reasoning to predict the geophysical fluid dynamicss of worlds radically different from our own such as exoplanets, earth in Nuclear Winter, other solar system worlds, and far future terrestial climates. Here, we look at atmospheric and oceanic dynamics on a flat earth, that is a disc-shaped planet rather like Sir Terry Pratchet's fantasy Discworld. Altough this has the disadvantage that this geometry is a completely imaginary, there is a rich larray of videos by flat earth proponents whose errors illuminate how concepts can be misconceived and misapplied by amateurs and freshman science studients. As such, this case is very useful to geophysics instructors. We show that weather and ocean flows on a flat, nonrotating earth and a rotating spherical planet are wildly different. These differences are a crushing debunk of the flat earh heresy, if one were needed. The "high contrast" of these very different atmospheres and oceans is valuable in instilling the open-mindedness that is essential in understanding excoplanets and Nuclear Winter and Post-Climate-Apocalypse earth.

Abstract:The article deals with the concept of flat Earth. There has a adherents and defenders in the modern world, despite the solid age of heliocentric teaching. Flat Earth apologists point out, that the evidence in favor of the scientific heliocentric theory is held on confidence. People should trust the testimony of astronauts, space exploration data, and more. However, the vast majority of people cannot verify this data from their own practical experience. If science is a criterion for truth, then the heliocentric concepts and flat Earth are far removed from this criterion. Moreover, in the cultural experience of the past we can find arguments in favor of the concept of a flat Earth. These testimonies are contained, in particular, in the Old Testament Bible, the sacred texts of Christianity and Judaism. The mythological and religious texts of other nations and cultures also refer to the idea of a flat Earth.

Abstract:Conspiratorial thinking has been with humanity for a long time but has recently grown as a source of societal concern and as a subject of research in the cognitive and social sciences. We propose a three‐tiered framework for the study of conspiracy theories: (1) cognitive processes, (2) the individual, and (3) social processes and communities of knowledge. At the level of cognitive processes, we identify explanatory coherence and faulty belief updating as critical ideas. At the level of the community of knowledge, we explore how conspiracy communities facilitate false belief by promoting a contagious sense of understanding, and how community norms catalyze the biased assimilation of evidence. We review recent research on conspiracy theories and explain how conspiratorial thinking emerges from the interaction of individual and group processes. As a case study, we describe observations the first author made while attending the Flat Earth International Conference, a meeting of conspiracy theorists who believe the Earth is flat. Rather than treating conspiracy belief as pathological, we take the perspective that is an extreme outcome of common cognitive processes.

Abstract:Epicurus's opinion on the shape of the earth forms a delicate issue that has animated recent scholarship. Similarly, in the reconstruction of Epicurus's philosophy by the French polymath Pierre Gassendi (1592–1655), the issue emerged under various guises. Interestingly, the question played a particularly puzzling role in Gassendi's considerations of Epicurus's atomic motion. By comparing the unpublished manuscript book De atomis (1636–1637) to the published Animadversiones (1649) and Syntagma philosophicum (1658), I will reveal that, in his quest for an accurate presentation of the original theory, Gassendi considerably modified his initial manuscript reconstruction of Epicurus's atomic movements and developed an account in which the concept of a plane terrestrial surface was indispensable. At the same time, the article will indicate that Gassendi, from his own point of view, also proposed an alternative to Epicurus's atomic motion in which he reinterpreted the original concepts in such a way that he could abstract himself from the Epicurean swerve of the atoms.

Abstract:Belief in a conspiracy theory may, for some, provide a social identity. Because of the nature of many conspiracy theories, social identities associated with such beliefs may be subject to varied and considerable threats. Whilst various mechanisms for dealing with social identity threat have received widespread attention, this paper introduces an as yet unexplored strategy – that of 'motivated ignorance' – as a further mechanism for social identity maintenance. This is a behavior where individuals actively avoid freely available and accessible information in order to protect a social identity from information that may be harmful to the existence of the broader social group, and thus the individual's own sense of self. Using a netnographic approach, we explored motivated ignorance related to the social identities formed around beliefs in the Flat Earth. Data revealed two categories of motivated ignorance. Firstly, that of 'poisoning the well', where ignorance was justified by derogating the perceived epistemic quality of the information. The second was more instrumental, through ad hominem attacks on the source rather than the epistemic quality of information. The study suggests that motivated ignorance may be used as a strategy that may be used to protect social identities that are under threat, adding a further mechanism to the literature on coping with social identity threat.

Abstract:Flatly Foliated Relativity (FFR) is a new theory which conceptually lies between Special Relativity (SR) and General Relativity (GR), in which spacetime is foliated by flat Euclidean spaces. While GR is based on the idea that "matter curves spacetime", FFR is based on the idea that "matter curves spacetime, but not space". This idea, inspired by the observed spatial flatness of our local universe, is realized by considering the same action as used in GR, but restricting it only to metrics which are foliated by flat spatial slices. FFR can be thought of as describing gravity without gravitational waves. In FFR, a positive cosmological constant implies several interesting properties which do not follow in GR: the metric equations are elliptic on each euclidean slice, there exists a unique vacuum solution among those spherically symmetric at infinity, and there exists a geometric way to define the arrow of time. Furthermore, as gravitational waves do not exist in FFR, there are simple analogs to the positive mass theorem and Penrose-type inequalities. Importantly, given that gravitational waves have a negligible effect on the curvature of spacetime, and that the universe appears to be locally flat, FFR may be a good approximation of GR. Moreover, FFR still admits many notable features of GR including the big bang, an accelerating expansion of the universe, and the Schwarzschild spacetime. Lastly, FFR is already known to have an existence theory for some simplified cases, which provokes an interesting discussion regarding the possibility of a more general existence theory, which may be relevant to understanding existence of solutions to GR.

Emergence of conformist thinking under strong paradigmatic pressure: The case of (Galilean) relativity

Abstract:An extension of the Bachelardian notion of epistemological profile allows us to establish the appearance of a strong conformist thinking component following certain formulations of the Galilean concept of the relativity of motion, namely those associated to the idea that the Sun might revolve around Earth from certain points of view. We deduce the existence of a strong remanent paradigmatic pressure related to the Copernican paradigm. A study involving more than 2900 students, primary school teachers and future teachers shows a 97 percent prevalence of (pre-Galilean) Copernican conformism. The epistemological profiles of several high level academics, including professional physicists, a mathematician and a sociologist show that, under strong paradigmatic pressure, even professional scientists can shift from a scientific to a conformist way of thinking, possibly related in some cases to a gate-keeper posture. Even when desired, the personal shift to a more advanced (relativist) understanding of such a high-pressure issue as heliocentrism can be a lengthy process. Some consequences of this disturbing cognitive process for science education are also discussed.

The role of conspiracy mentality in denial of science and susceptibility to viral deception about science

Abstract:Members of the public can disagree with scientists in at least two ways: people can reject well-established scientific theories and they can believe fabricated, deceptive claims about science to be true. Scholars examining the reasons for these disagreements find that some individuals are more likely than others to diverge from scientists because of individual factors such as their science literacy, political ideology, and religiosity. This study builds on this literature by examining the role of conspiracy mentality in these two phenomena. Participants were recruited from a national online panel (N = 513) and in person from the first annual Flat Earth International Conference (N = 21). We found that conspiracy mentality and science literacy both play important roles in believing viral and deceptive claims about science, but evidence for the importance of conspiracy mentality in the rejection of science is much more mixed.

Abstract:Abstract Einsteinian physics represents a distinct paradigm shift compared to Newtonian physics. There is worldwide interest in introducing Einsteinian physics concepts early in school curriculum and trials have demonstrated that this is feasible. However introducing Einsteinian concepts from an early age requires more than suitable curriculum and teaching resources—it also requires teacher training and public support. This paper describes a pilot study used in an attempt to gauge public and teacher support. This entailed giving teachers, who included the entire staff of a primary school, and self-selected family groups an in-depth understanding of proposed curriculum content through public outreach and professional development workshops. We assessed their attitudes through questionnaires. Comments and opinions from the public were also collected from online resources. Results show overwhelming support from both teachers and the public. We assessed attitudes of children as well as adults and obtained opinions regarding the appropriate age at which to begin to introduce Einsteinian concepts.

The Possibility of Curved Spacetime, Black Holes, and Big Bang is Less than One Billionth

Abstract:Gravity whose nature is fundamental to the understanding of solar system, galaxies and the structure and evolution of the Universe, is theorized by the assumption of curved spacetime, according to Einstein`s general theory of relativity (EGR). Particles move on curved spacetime along straight lines (geodesics). In the last year, I proposed the mirrored version of EGR, the flat-spacetime general relativity (FGR), in which particles move along curved lines on flat spacetime. This puts gravitational study back to the traditional Lagrangian formulation. In fact, all claimed accurate verification of general relativity is the verification of FGR, because people when confronting GR to observational data, calculate time, distance, or angle by directly using the coordinates in Schwarzschild solution or in post Newtonian formulation. For example, people calculate the angles by directly using the coordinate $\phi$. However, only when spacetime is flat does there exists one coordinate system which has direct meaning of time, distance, angle, and vice verse. This is the famous Riemann theorem. Therefore, the more claims are made that classical tests of general relativity fit data with great accuracy, the more falsified is the curved-spacetime assumption. People made three such specious claims to EGR as collected in the present paper. However, FGR predicts observationally verified results consistently for solar system, galaxies, and the universe on the whole. I show that the possibility of curved spacetime, black holes, and big bang is less than one billionth. An experiment is proposed whose results will completely decide the fate of curved spacetime assumption. with the original article `Einstein`s Geometrization vs. Holonomic Cancellation of Gravity via Spatial Coordinate-rescale` attached.

However, if he rotated his body then his arms were lifted up as the rotation was faster and faster. Mach principle is that the matter of the whole universe can affect local dynamic systems. Abstract:While Newtonian gravity is an adequate model for current geophysical exploration, Einsteinian gravity, based on the connection between free fall and warped time, has superseded Newtonian gravity as our best understanding of the universe. Einsteinian gravity is fundamental to GPS navigation and is a useful tool for geodesy. The Einstein-First Project is pioneering new curriculum material that seeks to teach students, from ages 11 upwards, the Einsteinian paradigm for gravity. By developing models, analogies and classroom activity based learning, we have found that students are fascinated and easily cope with concepts that adults, indoctrinated with Euclidean-Newtonian concepts, find difficult and confusing. This paper reviews the Einstein-First program, its methods and results of studies with students. We show that the majority of students demonstrate improved conceptual understanding and improved attitude to physics and that female students who enter the program with lower scores than male students, increase their performance to be level with the male students.

Abstract:This article represents the second work in a series of articles under the general title Funny Geophysics, the purpose of which is to popularize the earth sciences, and this abstract will be common to the works of the entire cycle. Answering the question of why we call serious science entertaining, we answer that at the moment there are no rigorous scientific disciplines such as seismology, tectonics, volcanology, etc., that explain the process of earthquakes and other catastrophic rock movements. Instead, there are pseudo-scientific fantasies of modern geophysicists, built on mythical ideas about the structure of the earth's crust and mantle. Figuratively speaking, we can safely say that the modern reasoning of geophysicists boils down to the fact that our Earth stands on three turtles and earthquakes are the result of the movement of these animals. This situation is partly due to the fact that our knowledge of the internal structure of the Earth is limited to a depth of 12 km, and what is deeper than this mark still remains a mystery to us. And what happens at a depth of hundreds of kilometers turns out to be a secret behind seven locks for us. But an even greater mystery for mankind is the question of why modern geophysics ossified at the level of the beginning of the 20th century and operates with the knowledge of that period, in every possible way ignoring the achievements of modern sciences? Tell me what's wrong? Then why all modern geophysics is based on the speculations of Mr. Reid and his mythical elastic stresses, which supposedly arise during the deformation of rocks? We will try to answer this question, and at the same time, using simple examples of catastrophic earthquakes and other seismic events, we will show the unforgivable errors of modern geophysics.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the replication of scientific experiments, with the participation of the general public, as one of the possible strategies to confront science deniers. Using the social media of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), the project entitled : The Magic of Physics and the Universe, invited the public to reproduce the experiment carried out by the Greek Eratosthenes over 2,100 years ago, which he proved that the Earth is spherical. We present a report of this experience to suggest that it is possible for citizens to experience scientific knowledge and observe the phenomena in a simple way, in order to develop a critical interpretation of false information that circulates in society. This proposal distinctively geeks to deconstruct the denial of the Earth's curvature through direct and collective participation of citizens in Eratosthenes' experiment, which permit more reflection on how the scientific method used to study this subject works.

Abstract:Physics has a bad press: it is seen by a majority of people as a boring discipline ever since their High School days. There is no glamour to it, just toil and pain, and for many who engaged in it, the end sight is often unemployment. Could it be that physicists don't know how to communicate what their discipline entails to? I will be tackling the problematic of making physics relevant to society and to the scientists in general. I will also be dealing with the methodological and educational aspects of teaching and practicing physics, and the need to close the epistemic gap between physics teaching and the physicist's understanding ... Abstract:An analysis of barriers to women's participation in physics education is presented. It is expected that in undergraduate physics the most common situation for a women is that she is cisgender and one of a numerical minority in the classroom. The effects of other intersectional identities are not considered. The analysis is based on evidence from the author's lived experience as a transgender woman who transitioned as an undergraduate and on evidence from the literature on the effects of gender differences in academic disciplines. It is expected that the teaching philosophy and practice in physics classrooms favours men over women and these gender dynamics are partially responsible for the under-representation of women in physics. These expectations require further research to be substantiated.
