Abstract:In this geometrical approach to gravitational lensing theory, we apply the Gauss?Bonnet theorem to the optical metric of a lens, modelled as a static, spherically symmetric, perfect non-relativistic fluid, in the weak deflection limit. We find that the focusing of the light rays emerges here as a topological effect, and we introduce a new method to calculate the deflection angle from the Gaussian curvature of the optical metric. As examples, the Schwarzschild lens, the Plummer sphere and the singular isothermal sphere are discussed within this framework.

Abstract:Epicurus's opinion on the shape of the earth forms a delicate issue that has animated recent scholarship. Similarly, in the reconstruction of Epicurus's philosophy by the French polymath Pierre Gassendi (1592–1655), the issue emerged under various guises. Interestingly, the question played a particularly puzzling role in Gassendi's considerations of Epicurus's atomic motion. By comparing the unpublished manuscript book De atomis (1636–1637) to the published Animadversiones (1649) and Syntagma philosophicum (1658), I will reveal that, in his quest for an accurate presentation of the original theory, Gassendi considerably modified his initial manuscript reconstruction of Epicurus's atomic movements and developed an account in which the concept of a plane terrestrial surface was indispensable. At the same time, the article will indicate that Gassendi, from his own point of view, also proposed an alternative to Epicurus's atomic motion in which he reinterpreted the original concepts in such a way that he could abstract himself from the Epicurean swerve of the atoms.

Abstract:Although Coulomb’s law is the governing law in electrostatics, its form does not always simplify calculations in situations involving symmetry. In this chapter, we introduce Gauss’s law as an alternative method for calculating electric fields of certain highly symmetrical charge distribution systems. In addition to being simpler than Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law permits us to use qualitative reasoning.

Abstract:Gauss's law in integral form states that closed surface integral of electric field is proportional to net charge present within the volume bounded by this closed surface. Gauss's law in differential form states that divergence of electric field is proportional to charge's volume density. From Gauss's law it is concluded that in vacuum, where no electric charges are present, divergence of electric field and closed surface integral of electric field are zero. In this paper we make an attempt to theoretically prove that for time-varying electric fields Gauss's law is not valid. In other words, for time-varying electric field even in vacuum divergence of electric field and closed surface integral of electric field are non-zero. We do this by considering simple sinusoidal motion of the charge and then by calculating closed surface integral at specific time of time-varying electric field due to charge motion. Results show that for charges at still and at motion with constant velocity Gauss's law is valid. However for charges moving with acceleration, Gauss's law is no longer valid.

Abstract:After reviewing how Albert Einstein's general relativity (GR) can be viewed as a gauge theory of the Poincar\'e algebra, we show how \'Elie Cartan's geometric formulation of Newtonian gravity (Newton-Cartan gravity) can be viewed as a gauge theory of the Bargmann algebra following the construction of [R. Andringa, E. Bergshoeff, S. Panda, and M. de Roo, "Newtonian Gravity and the Bargmann Algebra," Class. Quant. Grav. 28 (2011) 105011, arXiv:1011.1145 [hep-th]]. In doing so, we will touch on the following auxiliary topics: the extension of Yang-Mills gauge theory to a more generic formalism of gauge theory, the fiber bundle picture of gauge theory along with the soldering procedure necessary to complete the gravity as a gauge theory picture, the vielbein formalism of GR, Lie algebra procedures such as central extensions and \.In\"on\"u-Wigner contractions, and the hallmarks of Newtonian gravity which differentiate it from GR. The objective of the present work is to pedagogically fill in the gaps between the above citation and an undergraduate physics and mathematics education. Working knowledge of GR and some familiarity with classical field theory and Lie algebras is assumed.

Abstract:Gravity whose nature is fundamental to the understanding of solar system, galaxies and the structure and evolution of the Universe, is theorized by the assumption of curved spacetime, according to Einstein`s general theory of relativity (EGR). Particles move on curved spacetime along straight lines (geodesics). In the last year, I proposed the mirrored version of EGR, the flat-spacetime general relativity (FGR), in which particles move along curved lines on flat spacetime. This puts gravitational study back to the traditional Lagrangian formulation. In fact, all claimed accurate verification of general relativity is the verification of FGR, because people when confronting GR to observational data, calculate time, distance, or angle by directly using the coordinates in Schwarzschild solution or in post Newtonian formulation. For example, people calculate the angles by directly using the coordinate $\phi$. However, only when spacetime is flat does there exists one coordinate system which has direct meaning of time, distance, angle, and vice verse. This is the famous Riemann theorem. Therefore, the more claims are made that classical tests of general relativity fit data with great accuracy, the more falsified is the curved-spacetime assumption. People made three such specious claims to EGR as collected in the present paper. However, FGR predicts observationally verified results consistently for solar system, galaxies, and the universe on the whole. I show that the possibility of curved spacetime, black holes, and big bang is less than one billionth. Global Geometry and Topology of Spacelike Stationary Surfaces in the 4-Dimensional Lorentz Space

Abstract:For spacelike stationary (i.e. zero mean curvature) surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentz space, one can naturally introduce two Gauss maps and a Weierstrass-type representation. In this paper we investigate the global geometry of such surfaces systematically. The total Gaussian curvature is related with the surface topology as well as the indices of the so-called good singular ends by a Gauss–Bonnet type formula. On the other hand, as shown by a family of counterexamples to Ossermanʼs theorem, finite total curvature no longer implies that Gauss maps extend to the ends. Interesting examples include the deformations of the classical catenoid, the helicoid, the Enneper surface, and Jorge–Meeksʼ k-noids. Each family of these generalizations includes embedded examples in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space, showing a sharp contrast with the 3-dimensional case.

Abstract:The chapter has the purpose of presenting all the main characters of the book and some tools to handle them, and to understand their mathematical properties. We start with the gravitation law in Sect. 1.2, we clarify what is a gravitation field, in particular for an extended body, and we prove that this is a conservative or potential field (Sect. 1.3), i.e., the vector field of gravitational accelerations can be expressed as the gradient of a potential. Switching from an inertial system to one attached to the body of the earth, a proof mass rigidly attached to it will experience the centrifugal acceleration which is also a field that can be expressed as the gradient of a potential. By adding gravitational and centrifugal acceleration vectors, or their potentials (Sect. 1.3), we define the gravity field, which is the object of our study.

Abstract:The various mathematical models developed in the past to interpret the behavior of natural and manmade materials were based on observations and experiments made at that time. Classical laws (such as Newton's for gravity, Hooke's for elasticity, Navier-Stokes for fluidity, Fick's/Fourier's for diffusion/heat transfer, Coulomb's for electricity, as well as Maxwell's for electromagnetism and Einstein's for relativity) formed the basis of current technology and shaping of our civilization. The discovery of new phenomena with the aid of recently developed experimental probes have led to various modifications of these laws across disciplines and the scale spectrum: from subatomic and elementary particle physics to cosmology and from atomistic and nano/micro to macro/giga scales. The emergence of nanotechnology and the further advancement of space technology are ultimately connected with the design of novel tools for observation and measurements, as well as the development of new methods and approaches for quantification and understanding. The paper first reviews the author's previously developed weakly nonlocal or gradient models for elasticity, diffusion and plasticity within a unifying internal length gradient (ILG) framework. It then proposes a similar extension for fluids and Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism. Finally, it ventures a gradient modification of Newton's law of gravity and examines its implications to some problems of elementary particle physics, also relevant to cosmology. Along similar lines, it suggests an analogous extension of London's quantum mechanical potential to include both an "attractive" and a "repulsive" branch. It concludes with some comments on a fractional generalization of the ILG framework.

Abstract:Gravity anomalies, including the gravity field and its gradient, are governed by the 3-D gravitational potential boundary value problem. When the gravity field vector and its gradient tensor are calculated from the gravitational potential boundary based on the integral solution or conventional numerical approaches, they will inevitably lose effectiveness and high accuracy, especially with 3-D topography. In this letter, we introduce an efficient and accurate high-order spectral-element approach for simulating 3-D gravity anomalies, including surface topography. This new method is based on the spectral element technique of hexahedral grids to discretize the 3-D Poisson equation of gravitational potential. To solve the gravitational potential variational problem that converted to the boundary value problem, we choose the Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre (GLL) quadrature in all discrete spectral elements, in which the interpolation and quadrature points are the same. A 3-D topographic model is used to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility of the proposed spectral-element approach in forward modeling of gravity anomalies. Numerical results show that our approach can provide an accurate approximation to the gravity field vector and the gravity gradient tensor.

Abstract:In this article, we study the properties of charged gravastars in torsion-based $f(\mathbb{T})$ gravity in the presence of noncommutative geometry. We have taken the interior from noncommutative motivated space-time, noting that why, from a physical point of view, such a choice is justified, then we have taken the thin shell as stiff matter and taken three different exterior metrics (Reissner-Nordstrom (R-N), Bardeen and Ayon-Beato-Garcia (ABG) metric) to construct the gravastar model. We have studied the physical properties like proper length, entropy, energy, and EoS for these models, and we have also used Israel junction conditions to study the effective pressure, energy density, and potential of the thin shell. Finally, we comment on the stability of such a thin shell and the deflection angle caused by such a thin shell, which could, in principle, be tested by future radio telescopes like the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).

The theory includes solutions equivalent to Schwarzschild, Kerr, Reissner-Nordstroem, and Friedman metrics as well as to gravitational waves. We show that for all positive power α > 0 , if the initial hypersurface is smooth, complete non-compact uniformly convex graph over R n and bounded by two horospheres, then the solution of the flow exists for all time. Moreover, the evolution of horospheres act as barriers along the flow.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of Einstein gravity with vanishing cosmological constant subjected to conformal boundary conditions. Our focus is on comparing the series of subextensive terms to predictions from thermal effective field theory, with which we find agreement for the boundary theory on a spatial sphere, hyperbolic space, and flat space. We calculate the leading Wilson coefficients and observe that the first subextensive correction to the free energy is negative. This violates a conjectured bound on this coefficient in quantum field theory, which we interpret as a signal that gravity does not fully decouple in the putative boundary dual.
