Abstract:We present a few charge distributions for which the application of Gauss' law in its integral form, as typically outlined in standard textbooks, results in a contradiction. We identify the root cause of such contradictions and put forward a solution to resolve them.

Abstract:Although Coulomb’s law is the governing law in electrostatics, its form does not always simplify calculations in situations involving symmetry. In this chapter, we introduce Gauss’s law as an alternative method for calculating electric fields of certain highly symmetrical charge distribution systems. In addition to being simpler than Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law permits us to use qualitative reasoning.

Abstract:Gauss's law in integral form states that closed surface integral of electric field is proportional to net charge present within the volume bounded by this closed surface. Gauss's law in differential form states that divergence of electric field is proportional to charge's volume density. From Gauss's law it is concluded that in vacuum, where no electric charges are present, divergence of electric field and closed surface integral of electric field are zero. In this paper we make an attempt to theoretically prove that for time-varying electric fields Gauss's law is not valid. In other words, for time-varying electric field even in vacuum divergence of electric field and closed surface integral of electric field are non-zero. We do this by considering simple sinusoidal motion of the charge and then by calculating closed surface integral at specific time of time-varying electric field due to charge motion. Results show that for charges at still and at motion with constant velocity Gauss's law is valid. However for charges moving with acceleration, Gauss's law is no longer valid.

Abstract:This paper systematically discusses the application and importance of Gauss's law and Bio-Savart's law in electromagnetism. Firstly, the basic principles and mathematical expressions of Gauss's law and Bio-Savart's law are introduced, and their applications in simple cases are also introduced. Secondly, it describes the application in complex cases, such as how to find the electric field strength of an object with an uneven charge, in which calculus is used to calculate the charge from the charge density. Finally, it emphasizes the role of the two laws in promoting scientific research and technological innovation, and calls for further exploration of their application and significance to promote the development and innovation in the field of electromagnetism. This paper aims to give readers a comprehensive understanding and inspiration of Gauss's law and Biot-Savart's Law, explain the application of the two theorems, and provide useful reference and guidance for the research and practice in related fields.

Abstract:The problem of the curved bar subjected to an arbitrarily distributed loading on the surfaces r=a and r=b is sp!ved by using the method of complex functions and expanding the boundary conditions at r=a and r=b into Fourier series. Then another paradox in the two-dimensional theory of elasticity is discovered, i. e., the classical solution becomes infinite when the curved bat is subjected to a uniform loading or when the angle included between the two ends of the curved bar 2 alpha is equal to 2 pi and the curved bar is subjected to a sine or cosine loading. In this paper the paradox is resolved successfully and the solutions for the paradox ate obtained. Moreover, the modified classical solution which remains bounded as 2 alpha approaches 2 pi is provided.

Abstract:The Gauss's law, in an abstract sense, is a theorem that relates quantities on the boundary (flux) to the interior (charge) of a surface. An identity for soap froths were proved with the same boundary-interior relation. In this article, we try to construct a definition of flux for other graphs, such that a similar boundary-interior relation can be satisfied.

Abstract:We investigate the difficulties that students in calculus-based introductory physics courses have with the concepts of symmetry, electric field, and electric flux which are important for applying Gauss's law. The determination of the electric field using Gauss's law requires determining the symmetry of a particular charge distribution and predicting the direction of the electric field everywhere if a high symmetry exists. Effective application of Gauss's law implicitly requires understanding the principle of superposition for electric fields. Helping students learn when Gauss's law can be readily applied to determine the strength of the electric field, and then helping them learn to determine the appropriate shape of Gaussian surfaces if sufficient symmetry exists, can help develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills. We administered free-response and multiple-choice questions and conducted interviews with individual students using a think-aloud protocol to elucidate the difficulties that students have with the concepts of symmetry, electric field, and electric flux. We also developed a multiple-choice test that targets these conceptual issues to obtain quantitative information about their difficulties and administered it to 541 students in the introductory calculus-based physics courses and to upper-level undergraduates in an electricity and magnetism course and to graduate students enrolled in a TA seminar course. We find that undergraduate students have many common difficulties with these concepts.

Abstract:The normal or Gaussian distribution plays a prominent role in almost all fields of science. However, it is well known that the Gauss (or Euler--Poisson) integral over a finite boundary, as it is necessary for instance for the error function or the cumulative distribution of the normal distribution, cannot be expressed by analytic functions. This is proven by the Risch algorithm. Still, there are proposals for approximate solutions. In this paper, we give a new solution in terms of normal distributions by applying a geometric procedure iteratively to the problem.

Abstract:In axion-Maxwell theory at the minimal axion-photon coupling, we find non-invertible 0- and 1-form global symmetries arising from the naive shift and center symmetries. Since the Gauss law is anomalous, there is no conserved, gauge-invariant, and quantized electric charge. Rather, using half higher gauging, we find a non-invertible Gauss law associated with a non-invertible 1-form global symmetry, which is related to the Page charge. These symmetries act invertibly on the axion field and Wilson line, but non-invertibly on the monopoles and axion strings, leading to selection rules related to the Witten effect. We also derive various crossing relations between the defects. The non-invertible 0- and 1-form global symmetries mix with other invertible symmetries in a way reminiscent of a higher-group symmetry. Using this non-invertible higher symmetry structure, we derive universal inequalities on the energy scales where different infrared symmetries emerge in any renormalization group flow to the axion-Maxwell theory. Finally, we discuss implications for the Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Completeness Hypothesis in quantum gravity.

Gauss Relations in Feynman Integrals

Abstract:Embedding Feynman integrals in Grassmannians, we express Feynman integrals as linear combinations of generalized hypergeometric functions. Here we present general methods to obtain Gauss relations among those generalized hypergeometric functions. The hypergeometric expressions of Feynman integral are analytically continued from some connected component to another by the Gauss inverse relations, then continued to the whole domain of definition by the Gauss-Kummer relations. The Laurant series of the Feynman integral around the time-space dimension $D=4$ is obtained by the Gauss adjacent relations where the coefficients of powers of $D-4$ are given as some finite linear combinations of hypergeometric functions with integer parameters. As an example, we illustrate how to use the method to obtain the analytic expression of the Feynman integral of one-loop self energy in its whole domain of definition.

Abstract:A variety of real-world applications are modeled via hyperbolic conservation laws. To account for uncertainties or insufficient measurements, random coefficients may be incorporated. These random fields may depend discontinuously on the state space, e.g., to represent permeability in a heterogeneous or fractured medium. We introduce a suitable admissibility criterion for the resulting stochastic discontinuous-flux conservation law and prove its well-posedness. Therefore, we ensure the pathwise existence and uniqueness of the corresponding deterministic setting and present a novel proof for the measurability of the solution, since classical approaches fail in the discontinuous-flux case. As an example of the developed theory, we present a specific advection coefficient, which is modeled as a sum of a continuous random field and a pure jump field. This random field is employed in the stochastic conservation law, in particular a stochastic Burgers' equation, for numerical experiments. We approximate the solution to this problem via the Finite Volume method and introduce a new meshing strategy that accounts for the resulting standing wave profiles caused by the flux-discontinuities. The ability of this new meshing method to reduce the sample-wise variance is demonstrated in numerous numerical investigations.

Abstract:In 19th century Maxwell derived Maxwell equations from the knowledge of three experimental physical laws: the Coulomb's law, the Ampere's force law and Faraday's law of induction. However, theoretical basis for Ampere's force law and Faraday's law remains unknown to this day. Furthermore, the Lorentz force is considered as experimental phenomena, the theoretical foundation of this force is still unknown. To answer these fundamental theoretical questions, we derive Lienard Wiechert potentials, Maxwell's equations and Lorentz force from two simple postulates: (a) when all charges are at rest the Coulomb's force acts between the charges, and (b) that disturbances caused by charge in motion propagate away from the source with finite velocity. The special relativity was not used in our derivations nor the Lorentz transformation. In effect, it was shown all the electrodynamic laws, including the Lorentz force, can be derived from Coulomb's law and time retardation. This was accomplished by analysis of hypothetical experiment where test charge is at rest and where previously moving source charge stops at some time in the past. Then the generalized Helmholtz decomposition theorem, also derived in this paper, was applied to reformulate Coulomb's force acting at present time as the function of positions of source charge at previous time when the source charge was moving. From this reformulation of Coulomb's law the Lienard Wiechert potentials and Maxwell's equations were derived. In the second part of this paper, the energy conservation principle valid for moving charges is derived from the knowledge of electrostatic energy conservation principle valid for stationary charges. This again was accomplished by using generalized Helmholtz decomposition theorem. From this dynamic energy conservation principle the Lorentz force is derived.

Extended Divergence-Measure Fields, the Gauss-Green Formula, and Cauchy Fluxes

Abstract:We establish the Gauss-Green formula for extended divergence-measure fields (i.e., vector-valued measures whose distributional divergences are Radon measures) over open sets. We prove that, for almost every open set, the normal trace is a measure supported on the boundary of the set. Moreover, for any open set, we provide a representation of the normal trace of the field over the boundary of the open set as the limit of measure-valued normal traces over the boundaries of approximating sets. Furthermore, using this theory, we extend the balance law from classical continuum physics to a general framework in which the production on any open set is measured with a Radon measure and the associated Cauchy flux is bounded by a Radon measure concentrated on the boundary of the set. We prove that there exists an extended divergence-measure field such that the Cauchy flux can be recovered through the field, locally on almost every open set and globally on every open set. Our results generalize the classical Cauchy's Theorem (that is only valid for continuous vector fields) and extend the previous formulations of the Cauchy flux (that generate vector fields within $L^{p}$). Thereby, we establish the equivalence between entropy solutions of the multidimensional nonlinear partial differential equations of divergence form and of the mathematical formulation of physical balance laws via the Cauchy flux through the constitutive relations in the axiomatic foundation of Continuum Physics.

Divergence of Electric Field of Continuous and of a Point Charge for Relativistic and non-Relativistic Motion

Abstract:In this paper we considered divergence of electric and of magnetic fields for four cases: classical point charge, classical continuous charge, relativistic point and relativistic continuous charges. Results for classical and relativistic point charges are the same as in literature, i.e. Gauss's law is valid. However results for time-varying classical and relativistic distributed charges indicate that divergence of electric field is not zero even for volumes of space where no charges are present. For these cases original Gauss's law might require modification. Divergence of electric field seems to be far-field type scalar anisotropic field, which is generated by time-varying electric charges or currents. Results indicate that for these effects to be sufficiently large to be experimentally observable the time variation of electric charges and/or of currents should be very fast. Divergence of magnetic field is zero for all cases.

An Equation for Charge Decay Valid in Both Conductors and Insulators

Abstract:Gauss' law and the equation of continuity must be satisfied in all materials be they solids, liquids or gases. Most materials are classified as simple materials; i.e., their electrical properties are linear, isotropic and homogeneous. Charge transport in these simple materials should be described by a constitutive equation known as Ohm's law. When Ohm's law is combined with Gauss' law and the equation of continuity, a differential equation for volume charge density relaxation results. The usual solution to this equation shows that charge decays exponentially with a relaxation time given by the material's permittivity divided by its electrical conductivity. Experiments show that good conductors follow this exponential decay but that poor conductors (insulators) tend to follow a decay that initially is more hyperbolic than exponential. This suggests that either Ohm's law is not valid for insulator materials or that a deeper understanding of Ohm's law is needed to explain charge decay in these less than good conductors. This paper examines the latter approach and shows that, when all the free charges within a simple material are taken into account, a new unipolar charge decay equation is derived which is valid for any simple material: conductor, insulator or anywhere in between. For good conductors the equation reduces to the standard exponential law of decay. For very poor conductors it reduces to the Vellenga-Klinkenberg modified hyperbolic law with the initial decay producing the characteristic Bustin hyperbolic law of decay. Explicit definitions for a good conductor and a good insulator are obtained and are used to define the range where explicit deviations from both of these hyperbolic laws occur.

Abstract:We describe student difficulties in applying the superposition principle in combination with Gauss's law. We addressed these difficulties by developing a tutorial that uses guided inquiry. Students who used this tutorial following lecture-based instruction performed significantly better on these topics than those who did not. Instructors can assign the tutorial as classwork or homework.

Abstract:We describe and solve three puzzles arising in covariant and supertranslation-invariant formulas for the flux of angular momentum and other Lorentz charges in asymptotically flat spacetimes: (i) Supertranslation invariance and covariance imply invariance under spacetime translations; (ii) the flux depends on redundant auxiliary degrees of freedom that cannot be set to zero in all Lorentz frames without breaking Lorentz covariance; (iii) supertranslation-invariant Lorentz charges do not generate the transformations of the Bondi mass aspect implied by the isometries of the asymptotic metric. In this Letter, we solve the first two puzzles by presenting covariant formulas that unambiguously determine the auxiliary degrees of freedom and clarify the last puzzle by explaining the different roles played by covariant and canonical charges. Abstract:The quantization of Yang-Mills field theories requires the introduction of a gauge fixing which leads to a violation of the local Gauss law described by the so-called Gauss operator. We discuss the local quantizations of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the possible Gauss operators, which are argued to have a more physical meaning than the gauge fixings. We focus the attention on the local quantizations that leave the global gauge group and a subgroup of local gauge transformations unbroken, such as the Feynman quantization of quantum electrodynamics, and show that in the non-Abelian case such properties cannot be realized together with Lorentz covariance; thus, quite generally, one cannot have the structural properties of the Feynman quantization of quantum electrodynamics.
