Abstract:The Einstein-Hilbert action has a bulk term and a surface term (which arises from integrating a four divergence). I show that one can obtain Einstein's equations from the surface term alone. This leads to: (i) a novel, completely self contained, perspective on gravity and (ii) a concrete mathematical framework in which the description of spacetime dynamics by Einstein's equations is similar to the description of a continuum solid in the thermodynamic limit.

Torsion and Chern-Simons gravity in 4D space-times from a Geometrodynamical four-form

Abstract:The space-time geometry in any inertial frame is described by the line-element $ds^2= \eta_{\mu \nu} dx^\mu dx^\nu$. Now, not only the Minkowski metric $\eta_{\mu \nu} $ is invariant under proper Lorentz transformations, the totally antisymmetric Levi-Civita tensor $e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} $ too is. In general relativity (GR), $\eta_{\mu \nu} $ of the flat space-time gets generalized to a dynamical, space-time dependent metric tensor $ g_{\mu \nu} $ that characterizes a curved space-time geometry. In the present study, it is put forward that the flat space-time Levi-Civita tensor gets elevated to a dynamical four-form field $\tilde {w} $ in curved space-time manifolds, i.e. $e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} \rightarrow w_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} (x) = \phi (x) \ e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} $, so that $\tilde {w} = {1\over {4!}} \ w_{\mu \nu \rho \sigma} \ \tilde{d} x^\mu \wedge \tilde{d} x^\nu \wedge \tilde{d} x^\rho \wedge \tilde{d} x^\sigma$. It is shown that this geometrodynamical four-form field extends GR by leading naturally to a torsion in the theory as well as to a Chern-Simons gravity. It is demonstrated that the scalar-density $\phi (x)$ associated with $\tilde {w} $ may be used to construct a generalized exterior derivative that converts a p-form density to a (p+1)-form density of identical weight. It is argued that the scalar-density $\phi (x)$ associated with $\tilde {w}$ corresponds to an axion-like pseudo-scalar field in the Minkowski space-time, and that it can also masquerade as dark matter. Thereafter, we provide a simple semi-classical analysis in which a self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensate of such ultra-light pseudo-scalars leads to the formation of a supermassive black hole. A brief analysis of propagation of weak gravitational waves in the presence of $\tilde{w} $ is also considered in this article.

Abstract:A novel structure-preserving algorithm for general relativity in vacuum is derived from a lattice gauge theoretic discretization of the tetradic Palatini action. The resulting model of discrete gravity is demonstrated to preserve local Lorentz invariance and symplectic structure.

Abstract:We address a subject that could have been analyzed century ago: how does the universe of general relativity look like when it would have been filled with solid matter? Solids break spontaneously the translations and rotations of space itself. Only rather recently it was realized in various context that the order parameter of the solid has a relation to Einsteins dynamical space time which is similar to the role of a Higgs field in a Yang-Mills gauge theory. Such a "crystal gravity" is therefore like the Higgs phase of gravity. The usual Higgs phases are characterized by a special phenomenology. A case in point is superconductivity exhibiting phenomena like the Type II phase, characterized by the emergence of an Abrikosov lattice of quantized magnetic fluxes absorbing the external magnetic field. What to expect in the gravitational setting? The theory of elasticity is the universal effective field theory associated with the breaking of space translations and rotations having a similar status as the phase action describing a neutral superfluid. A geometrical formulation appeared in its long history, similar in structure to general relativity, which greatly facilitates the marriage of both theories. With as main limitation that we focus entirely on stationary circumstances -- the dynamical theory is greatly complicated by the lack of Lorentz invariance -- we will present a first exploration of a remarkably rich and often simple physics of "Higgsed gravity".

Gravity: A New Holographic Perspective

Abstract:A general paradigm for describing classical (and semiclassical) gravity is presented. This approach brings to the centre-stage a holographic relationship between the bulk and surface terms in a general class of action functionals and provides a deeper insight into several aspects of classical gravity which have no explanation in the conventional approach. After highlighting a series of unresolved issues in the conventional approach to gravity, I show that (i) principle of equivalence, (ii) general covariance and (iii)a reasonable condition on the variation of the action functional, suggest a generic Lagrangian for semiclassical gravity of the form $L=Q_a^{bcd}R^a_{bcd}$ with $\nabla_b Q_a^{bcd}=0$. The expansion of $Q_a^{bcd}$ in terms of the derivatives of the metric tensor determines the structure of the theory uniquely. The zeroth order term gives the Einstein-Hilbert action and the first order correction is given by the Gauss-Bonnet action. Any such Lagrangian can be decomposed into a surface and bulk terms which are related holographically. The equations of motion can be obtained purely from a surface term in the gravity sector. Hence the field equations are invariant under the transformation $T_{ab} \to T_{ab} + \lambda g_{ab}$ and gravity does not respond to the changes in the bulk vacuum energy density. The cosmological constant arises as an integration constant in this approach. The implications are discussed.

Abstract:Three dimensional (3d) Carrollian CFTs are potential co-dimension one holographic duals of 4d asymptotically flat spacetimes that live on the whole of the null boundary. In this paper, we show that the local stress tensor of the 3d Carrollian conformal theory (without any additional sources) constructed in terms of the geometric structure at asymptotic null infinity naturally encodes both the leading and subleading soft graviton theorems. We relate the 3d Carroll stress tensor to the 2d Celestial one and show how the 3d version naturally localises the non-local 2d Celestial stress tensor. We also comment on the relation with stress tensors in relativistic 3d CFTs and connections to the flat limit of AdS/CFT.

Gravity from AKSZ-Manin theories in two, three, and four dimensions

Abstract:We show that various dynamical gauge theories in two, three and four dimensions, which are obtained as Manin deformations of topological Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky theories, are equivalent to gravitational theories. Since gravity is topological in two and three dimension, this equivalence requires a diffeomorphism breaking background source term. In four dimensions, however, the MacDowell-Mansouri formulation of Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant is obtained identically via the Manin deformation of a particular Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky theory.

Einstein gravity as a 3D conformally invariant theory

Abstract:We give an alternative description of the physical content of general relativity that does not require a Lorentz invariant spacetime. Instead, we find that gravity admits a dual description in terms of a theory where local size is irrelevant. The dual theory is invariant under foliation preserving 3-diffeomorphisms and 3D conformal transformations that preserve the 3-volume (for the spatially compact case). Locally, this symmetry is identical to that of Horava-Lifshitz gravity in the high energy limit but our theory is equivalent to Einstein gravity. Specifically, we find that the solutions of general relativity, in a gauge where the spatial hypersurfaces have constant mean extrinsic curvature, can be mapped to solutions of a particular gauge fixing of the dual theory. Moreover, this duality is not accidental. We provide a general geometric picture for our procedure that allows us to trade foliation invariance for conformal invariance. The dual theory provides a new proposal for the theory space of quantum gravity.

On Geometry and Symmetries in Classical and Quantum Theories of Gauge Gravity

Abstract:Spin Foam and Loop approaches to Quantum Gravity reformulate Einstein's theory of relativity in terms of connection variables. The metric properties are encoded in face bivectors/conjugate fluxes that are required to satisfy certain conditions, in order to allow for their geometric interpretation. We show that the (sub-)set of the so-called `volume simplicity constraints' is not implemented properly in the current EPRL-FK spinfoam vertex amplitude, if extended to arbitrary polyhedra. We then propose that a certain knot-invariant of the bivector geometry, induced on the boundary graph, encodes the missing conditions, allowing for reconstruction of a polytope from its two-dimensional faces. Implemented in the quantum amplitude, this leads to corrected semi-classical asymptotics for a hypercuboid, and is conjectured to be non-trivial in more general situations. The analysis of linear version of `volume simplicity' suggests to switch from hypersurface normals to edge lengths, that is from 3-forms directly to tetrads -- in the extended configuration space of the Plebanski constrained formulation. We then give the corresponding dual version of linear simplicity constraints, which prescribe 3d volume for the polyhedral faces in the boundary of a 4d polytope. We also analyse the status of metric/vielbein degrees of freedom and the role of local translations in the classical Einstein-Cartan gravity, viewed as a Poincare gauge theory. The relation with the diffeomorphism symmetry is established through the key concept of development, which generalizes parallel transport of vectors in the geometric theory of Cartan connections. We advocate the latter to be the natural gauge-theoretic framework for the theory of relativity.

Fracton-elasticity duality on curved manifolds

Abstract:The mechanical properties of crystals on curved substrates mix elastic, geometric and topological degrees of freedom. In order to elucidate the properties of such crystals we formulate the low-energy effective action that combines metric degrees of freedom with displacement fields and defects. We propose dualities for elasticity coupled to curved geometry formulated in terms of tensor gauge theories. We show that the metric degrees of freedom, evolving akin to linearized gravity are mapped to tensors with three indices. When coupled to crystals these degrees of freedom become gapped and, in the presence of dislocations and disclinations, multivalued. The elastic degrees of freedom remain gapless and mapped to symmetric gauge fields with two indices. In analogy with elasticity on flat space formulation we assume that the trace of the total quadrupole moment is conserved. In the dual formulation, topological defects, which act as sources for the gauge fields, are fractons or excitations with restricted mobility. This leads to generalized glide constraints that restrict both displacement and gravitational defects.

Abstract:From modern observations of gravitational interactions, it can be inferred that there is much left to discover about the fundamental gravitational field. Since the advent of the General Theory of Relativity over a century ago, we have come to make exotic assumptions pertaining to the inner workings of an associated field theory. One of which is an elastic nature to spacetime and the behavior of gravity for strong and weak fields. In this work we investigate a more \textit{physical} nature, expanding upon general relativity led by observations of strong sources. We introduce a candidate Lorentz-invariant field theory that employs an \textit{elastic} and \textit{pseudoscalar} nature to the field interpretation and it's properties. A unique generation of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion is presented; resulting in a longitudinal wave equation for the \textit{Dilation} gravitational field. This provides a modern advancement of a relativistic gravitational field theory, supported by observation.

Abstract:The gravitational interaction, as described by the Einstein-Cartan theory, is shown to emerge as the by-product of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a gauge symmetry in a pre-geometric four-dimensional spacetime. Starting from a formulation à la Yang-Mills on an SO(1,4) or SO(3,2) principal bundle and not accounting for a spacetime metric, the Einstein-Hilbert action is recovered after the identification of the effective spacetime metric and spin connection for the residual SO(1,3) gauge symmetry of the spontaneously broken phase - i.e. the stabiliser of the SO(1,4) or SO(3,2) gauge group. Thus, the two fundamental tenets of General Relativity, i.e. diffeomorphism invariance and the equivalence principle, can arise from a more fundamental gauge principle. The two mass parameters that characterise Einstein gravity, namely the Planck mass and the cosmological constant, are likewise shown to be emergent, with the correct sign for the cosmological constant depending on whether the fundamental gauge group is taken to be either the de Sitter or the anti-de Sitter group. The phase transition from the unbroken to the spontaneously broken phase is expected to happen close to the Planck temperature. This is conjectured to be dynamically driven by a scalar field that implements a Higgs mechanism, hence providing mass to new particles, with consequences for cosmology and high-energy physics. The couplings of gravity to matter are discussed after drawing up a dictionary that interconnects pre-geometric and effective geometric quantities. In the unbroken phase where the fundamental gauge symmetry is restored, the theory is potentially power-counting renormalisable without matter, offering a novel path towards a UV completion of Einstein gravity.

Emergent Cosmology in 4D Einstein Gauss Bonnet Theory of Gravity

Abstract:In this paper, in an FLRW background and a perfect fluid equation of state, we explore the possibility of the realization of an emergent scenario in a 4D regularized extension of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, with the field equations particularly expressed in terms of scalar-tensor degrees of freedom. By assuming non-zero spatial curvature ($k = \pm 1$), the stability of the Einstein static universe (ESU) and its subsequent exit into the standard inflationary system is tested through different approaches. In terms of dynamical systems, a spatially closed universe rather than an open universe shows appealing behaviour to exhibit a graceful transition from the Einstein static universe to standard cosmological history. We found that under linear homogeneous perturbations, for some constraints imposed on the model parameters, the Einstein static universe is stable under those perturbations. Moreover, it is noted that for a successful graceful transition, the equation of state $\omega$ must satisfy the conditions $-1 < \omega <0$ and $\omega < -1$ for closed and open universes, respectively. Also, under density perturbations, the Einstein static universe is unstable if the fluid satisfies the strong energy condition but is stable if it violates it, for both closed and open universes. Furthermore, the Einstein static universe is seen to be stable under vector perturbations and tensor perturbations, regardless of whether the fluid obeys or violates the SEC.

Abstract:Recently, a novel 4D Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet gravity has been proposed by Glavan and Lin (2020 Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 081301) by rescaling the coupling and taking the limit at the level of equations of motion. This prescription, though was shown to bring non-trivial effects for some spacetimes with particular symmetries, remains mysterious and calls for scrutiny. Indeed, there is no continuous way to take the limit in the higher D-dimensional equations of motion because the tensor indices depend on the spacetime dimension and behave discretely. On the other hand, if one works with 4D spacetime indices the contribution corresponding to the Gauss–Bonnet term vanishes identically in the equations of motion. A necessary condition (but may not be sufficient) for this procedure to work is that there is an embedding of the 4D spacetime into the higher D-dimensional spacetime so that the equations in the latter can be properly interpreted after taking the limit. In this note, working with 2D Einstein gravity, we show several subtleties when applying the method used in (2020 Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 081301).

Abstract:The derivation of the equation of static cylindrical bending of a thin plate under the action of pressures on its surface and end edges is given. The reduction over the thickness of the plate is taken into account, the effect of which becomes noticeable at high average pressure. The refined value of the transverse distributed force is used. The dependence of the bending on the average pressure and the rigidity of the supports in the longitudinal direction is considered.

General Relativistic Fall on a Thick-Plate

Abstract:As an extension of a thin-shell, we adopt a single parametric plane-symmetric Kasner-type spacetime to represent an exact thick-plate. This naturally extends the domain wall spacetime to a domain thick-wall case. Physical properties of such a plate with symmetry axis $z$ and thickness $0\leq z\leq z_{0}$ are investigated. Geodesic analysis determines the possibility of a Newtonian-like fall, namely with constant negative acceleration as it is near the Earth's surface. This restricts the Kasner-like exponents to a finely-tuned set, which together with the thickness and energy parameter determine the G-force of the plate. In contrast to the inverse square law, the escape velocity of the thick-shell is unbounded. The metric is regular everywhere but expectedly the energy-momentum of the thick-plate remains problematic.

Towards a Geodesic Flow Bundle Formalism of General Relativity: Riemannian case

Abstract:Gravity is a phenomenon which arises due to the space-time geometry. The main equations that describe gravity are the Einstein equations. To understand the consequences of these field equations we need to calculate the free particle worldlines to the geometries, which solve these field equations e.g. the Schwarzschild metric solves the Einstein equations and we would need to solve the geodesic equations to this metric. If we were to describe the space-time geometry in terms of geodesics instead of the metric, we could skip the step of solving for the metric and solve for the geodesics directly. In this work we have developed a formalism doing that: we use the bundle of the arclength parametrized geodesics (geodesic flow bundle GFB) from all points in the manifold to describe a Riemannian geometry. Our formalism uses infinitesimal spherical triangles as generating elements, to solve geometric problems. We relate the geodesic flow bundle to Gaussian curvature and develop a method to calculate the geodesics geometrically starting from a Gaussian curvature field. The result amounts to a generalization of the cosine- and sine-laws for constant curvature to varying curvature fields. In this work we restrict ourselves to the Riemannian case and positive curvature fields. We expand the triangulation problem in power series and calculate the main result up to second order. The method itself could be extended to treat more generic cases in particular pseudo-Riemannian geometries which relate directly to Einsteins equations. We test our results against the sphere and perform consistency checks for some examples of varying curvature fields. As a by-product we generalize the notion of integration to products and derive a relation analogue to the main theorem of calculus, for product integrals.

Poincaré invariance and asymptotic flatness in Shape Dynamics

Abstract:Shape Dynamics is a theory of gravity that waives refoliation invariance in favor of spatial Weyl invariance. It is a canonical theory, constructed from a Hamiltonian, 3+1 perspective. One of the main deficits of Shape Dynamics is that its Hamiltonian is only implicitly constructed as a functional of the phase space variables. In this paper, I write down the equations of motion for Shape Dynamics to show that over a curve in phase space representing a Minkowski spacetime, Shape Dynamics possesses Poincaré symmetry for appropriate boundary conditions. The proper treatment of such boundary conditions leads us to completely formulate Shape Dynamics for open manifolds in the asymptotically flat case. We study the charges arising in this case and find a new definition of total energy, which is completely invariant under spatial Weyl transformations close to the boundary. We then use the equations of motion once again to find a non-trivial solution of Shape Dynamics, consisting of a flat static Universe with a point-like mass at the center. We calculate its energy through the new formula and rederive the usual Schwarzschild mass.

Abstract:This essay's title is justified by discussing a class of Yang-Mills-type theories of which standard Yang-Mills theories are special cases but which is broad enough to include gravity as a double field theory. We use the framework of homotopy algebras, where conventional Yang-Mills theory is the tensor product ${\cal K}\otimes \frak{g}$ of a `kinematic' algebra ${\cal K}$ with a color Lie algebra $\frak{g}$. The larger class of Yang-Mills-type theories are given by the tensor product of ${\cal K}$ with more general Lie-type algebras of which ${\cal K}$ itself is an example, up to anomalies that can be cancelled for the tensor product with a second copy $\bar{\cal K}$. Gravity is then given by ${\cal K}\otimes \bar{\cal K}$.
