A Comparative Analysis of the Theory of Regulation and the Social Structure of Accumulation Theory

Abstract:YEARS AGO TWO DIFFERENT, yet similar, theories of long-run capital accumulation arose on the two sides of the North Atlantic. French Marxists developed the regulation theory (RT), with Aglietta (1979, first published in French in 1976) producing the major initial work, followed by works by such authors as Lipietz (1986, 1987) and Boyer (1984, 1987). This theory holds that capitalism has experienced a sequence of "regimes of accumulation," each associated with a particular "mode of regulation" that governs the accumulation process. The RT school is perhaps best known for its concept of "Fordism," the name given to the post-World War II regime of accumulation. Fordism is a regime of accumulation based on assembly line production methods and mass consumption by the working class. At the same time a group of economists in the United States developed the social structure of accumulation theory (SS AT). The first published work was Gordon (1978), followed by Gordon (1980), Gordon, Edwards, and Reich (1982), Bowles, Gordon, and Weisskopf (1983), and Weisskopf, Bowles, and Gordon (1985). The SSAT sought to explain long waves in capital accumulation as a consequence of the successive creation and collapse of a supporting institutional structure, the latter referred to as a social structure of accumulation (SS A).
