Abstract:Low-bandgap CH3 NH3 (Pbx Sn1-x )I3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) hybrid perovskites (e.g., ≈1.5-1.1 eV) demonstrating high surface coverage and superior optoelectronic properties are fabricated. State-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) performance is reported with power conversion efficiencies approaching 10% in planar heterojunction architecture with small (<450 meV) energy loss compared to the bandgap and high (>100 cm2 V-1 s-1 ) intrinsic carrier mobilities.

Abstract:Tandem solar cells (TSCs) are an effective device architecture for surpassing the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit of single-junction solar cells. Owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability, wide-bandgap (Eg ≥ 1.60eV) perovskites are a unique class of top-cell materials for tandem applications. They can be paired with a range of bottom-cell materials such as Si, narrow-gap perovskites, organic semiconductors, and CIGS to create high-efficiency, low-cost TSCs. Notably, perovskite/Si and perovskite/CIGS TSCs have already outperformed their single-junction counterparts. However, the operational lifetimes of perovskite-based monolithic TSCs are generally limited by the instability of the wide-bandgap perovskites, hampering the progress toward commercial applications. In this review, we critically examine the recent advances in tackling the stability challenge of wide-bandgap perovskite cells for tandem applications. Factors affecting the stability of wide-bandgap perovskite materials, exemplified using organic-inorganic mixed-halide and all-inorganic perovskites, are analyzed with an emphasis on phase segregation and transition. These are accompanied by a discussion of possible strategies for improving the operational stability of perovskite-based monolithic TSCs. Finally, we outline the challenges ahead and opportunities in this direction, with an aim to broaden the horizons of designing stable wide-bandgap perovskite cells for tandem applications.

Abstract:Superior bandgap tunability enables solution-processed halide perovskite a promising candidate for multi-junction photovoltaics (PVs). Particularly, optically coupling wide-gap perovskite by stacking with commercially available PVs such as silicon and CIGS (also known as 4-terminal tandem) simplifies the technology transfer process, and further advances the commercialization potential of perovskite technology. However, compared with matured PV materials and the phase-pure FAPbI3 , wide-gap perovskite still suffers from huge voltage deficits. Here, the authors take advantage of the synergetic effect behind a sequential fluoride and organic ammonium salt surface passivation strategy to control non-radiative energy losses, and obtained a 17.7% efficiency in infrared-transparent wide-gap perovskite solar cells (21.1% for opaque device), and achieved efficiencies of over 25% when stacked with commercial Si and CIGS products with original PCEs of 18-20% under a 4-terminal working condition.

Abstract:In article number 1904494, Yueh-Lin Loo and co-workers demonstrate a near-infrared-harvesting perovskite solar cell with enhanced power-conversion efficiency as high as 21.6% and improved stability, with an operational half-life of 1900 h, by directly incorporating a multifunctional organic semiconductor that both extends light absorption and passivates defects in the perovskite active layers. This work provides a promising approach to prepare highly efficient and stable perovskites solar cells and opens a new application field for the rational design of narrow-bandgap organic semiconductors.

Abstract:To match the bandgap of silicon solar cells for tandem devices, Jinsong Huang and co-workers report the incorporation of Br into perovskite to increase the bandgap to 1.72 eV. In article number 1401616, the efficiency of perovskite solar cell with wide-bandgap is shown to reach 13.1% with grain size engineering. Abstract:Bond length and bond angle exhibited by valence electrons is essential to the core of chemistry. Using lead-based organic-inorganic perovskite compounds as an exploratory platform, it is demonstrated that the modulation of valence electrons by compression can lead to discovery of new properties of known compounds. Yet, despite its unprecedented progress, further efficiency boost of lead-based organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells is hampered by their wider bandgap than the optimum value according to the Shockley-Queisser limit. By modulating the valence electron wavefunction with modest hydraulic pressure up to 2.1 GPa, the optimized bandgap for single-junction solar cells in lead-based perovskites, for the first time, is achieved by narrowing the bandgap of formamidinium lead triiodide (HC(NH2)(2)PbI3) from 1.489 to 1.337 eV. Strikingly, such bandgap narrowing is partially retained after the release of pressure to ambient, and the bandgap narrowing is also accompanied with double-prolonged carrier lifetime. With First-principles simulation, this work opens a new dimension in basic chemical understanding of structural photonics and electronics and paves an alternative pathway toward better photovoltaic materials-by-design.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have received extensive attention in the photovoltaic research community due to its remarkable optoelectronic properties, such as high carrier mobility, tunable band gap, long diffusion lengths and long lifetime. In this section, we summarized the understanding of perovskite materials and devices from the perspective of crystal structure, optoelectronic property, device working mechanism, as well as the progress of the solar cells. The origin associated to its superior optoelectronic property is discussed, which lead to a rational design for advanced optoelectronic devices based on perovskite materials.

Abstract:Iodide and bromide integration facilitate bandgap tunability in wide-bandgap perovskites, yet high concentrations of bromide lead to halide phase segregation, adversely affecting the efficiency and stability of solar cell devices. In this work, 2-amino-4,5-imidazoledicarbonitrile (AIDCN), with highly polarized charge distribution and compact molecular configuration, is incorporated into a 1.86 eV wide-bandgap perovskite to effectively suppress photoinduced iodine escape and phase segregation. Hyperspectral photoluminescence microscopy reveals that AIDCN mitigates phase segregation under continuous laser exposure. Concurrent in situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray fluorescence measurements further validate suppressed iodine escape, evidenced by a notable slowing down of lattice shrinkage and a well-maintained overall chemical composition of the perovskite under continuous illumination. Applying this approach, we achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.52% in 1.86 eV wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells. By integrating this perovskite subcell with the PM6:BTP-eC9 organic subcell, the tandem attains a maximum PCE of 25.13%, with a certified stabilized PCE of 23.40%.

Abstract:The organic-inorganic hybrid lead trihalide perovskites have been emerging as the most attractive photovoltaic materials. As regulated by Shockley-Queisser theory, a formidable materials science challenge for improvement to the next level requires further band-gap narrowing for broader absorption in solar spectrum, while retaining or even synergistically prolonging the carrier lifetime, a critical factor responsible for attaining the near-band-gap photovoltage. Herein, by applying controllable hydrostatic pressure, we have achieved unprecedented simultaneous enhancement in both band-gap narrowing and carrier-lifetime prolongation (up to 70% to ∼100% increase) under mild pressures at ∼0.3 GPa. The pressure-induced modulation on pure hybrid perovskites without introducing any adverse chemical or thermal effect clearly demonstrates the importance of band edges on the photon-electron interaction and maps a pioneering route toward a further increase in their photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Investigations of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite materials have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent properties including bandgap tunability, long charge diffusion length, and outstanding optoelectronic merits. Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites are demonstrated to be promising materials in a variety of optoelectronic applications including photodetection, energy harvesting, and light-emitting devices. As perovskite solar cells are well studied in literature, here, the recent developments of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite materials in optoelectronic devices beyond solar cells are summarized. The preparation of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite films is introduced. Applications of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite materials in light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and lasers are then highlighted. Finally, the recent advances in these optoelectronic applications based on organic-inorganic metal halide materials are summarized and the future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:Perovskite/organic tandem solar cells (TSCs) have attracted increasing attention owing to their potential for high performance solution processable photovoltaics. However, Br/I mixed-halide perovskites as the active layer of wide band gap (WBG) front subcells suffer from inevitable photoinduced phase segregation. Here, quasi-2D perovskites free of phase-segregation are selected to act as the light-harvesting layer of the WBG front subcell due to their high operation stability under continuous illumination. A semi-empirical model was developed to estimate the practical limit of the photovoltaic parameters of the TSC devices with active layers of different band gaps and film thicknesses. By reasonable selection of an interface modification material as the hole transport layer, ultra-low open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) loss below 0.4 V was realized for the front subcell. The optimized TSC device exhibits a maximum PCE of 21.3% and high V oc of 2.06 V, together with excellent operation stability with T 90 beyond 500 hours under the maximum power point condition in an air atmosphere.

Abstract:In this work, the authors realize stable and highly efficient wide‐bandgap perovskite solar cells that promise high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) and are likely to play a key role in next generation multi‐junction photovoltaics (PV). This work reports on wide‐bandgap (≈1.72 eV) perovskite solar cells exhibiting stable PCEs of up to 19.4% and a remarkably high open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.31 V. The VOC‐to‐bandgap ratio is the highest reported for wide‐bandgap organic−inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells and the VOC also exceeds 90% of the theoretical maximum, defined by the Shockley–Queisser limit. This advance is based on creating a hybrid 2D/3D perovskite heterostructure. By spin coating n‐butylammonium bromide on the double‐cation perovskite absorber layer, a thin 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite layer of intermediate phases is formed, which mitigates nonradiative recombination in the perovskite absorber layer. As a result, VOC is enhanced by 80 mV. By coating n‐butylammonium bromide on wide‐bandgap double‐cation perovskite absorber layers (EG ≈ 1.72 eV), a thin 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite layer of intermediate phase is formed. The resulting heterostructure mitigates nonradiative recombination and enables a high open‐circuit voltage of up to 1.31 V and stable power output efficiencies of up to 19.4%.

Abstract:Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have garnered considerable interest due to their potential to surpass the Shockley-Queisser limit of single-junction Si solar cells. The rapidly advanced efficiencies of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells benefit from the significant improvements in perovskite technology. Beginning with the evolution of wide bandgap perovskite cells towards two-terminal (2T) perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, this work concentrates on component engineering, additives, and interface modification of wide bandgap perovskite cells. Furthermore, the advancements in 2T perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells are presented, and the influence of the central interconnect layer and the Si cell on the progression of the tandem solar cells is emphasized. Finally, we discuss the challenges and obstacles associated with 2T perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, conducting a thorough analysis and providing a prospect for their future.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite and organic solar cells (PSCs and OSCs) are considered as the prime candidates currently for clean energy applications due to their solution and low-temperature processibility. Nevertheless, the substantial photon loss in near-infrared (NIR) region and relatively large photovoltage deficit need to be improved to enable their uses in high-performance solar cells. To mitigate these disadvantages, we integrate low-bandgap organic bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) layer into inverted PSCs to construct facile hybrid solar cells (HSCs). By optimizing the BHJ components, we achieve an excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.80%, with a decent open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.146 V and extended photo-response over 950 nm for rigid HSCs. The resultant devices also exhibit superior long-term (over 1000 h) ambient- and photo-stability compared to those from single-component PSCs and OSCs. More importantly, a champion PCE of 21.73% and excellent mechanical durability can also be achieved in flexible HSCs, which is the highest efficiency reported for flexible solar cells to date. Taking advantage of these impressive device performance, we have successfully integrated flexible HSCs into a power source for wearable sensors to demonstrate real-time temperature monitoring.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Monolithic perovskite/organic tandem solar cells have attracted increasing attention due to their potential of being highly efficient while compatible to facile solution fabrication processes. One of the limiting factors for improving the performance of perovskite/organic tandem cells is the lack of wide‐bandgap perovskites with suitable bandgap, film quality, and optoelectronic properties for front cells. In addition, the development of low‐bandgap organic bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) rare cells with extended absorption in the infrared range is also critical for improving tandem cells. This work has carefully optimized mixed halide wide‐bandgap perovskite (MWP) films by introducing a small amount of formamidinium (FA+) cations into the basic composition of MA1.06PbI2Br(SCN)0.12, which provides an effective means to modulate the crystallization properties and phase stability of the films. At optimized conditions, the MA0.96FA0.1PbI2Br(SCN)0.12 forms high‐quality films with grain boundaries homogeneously passivated by PbI2, leading to a reduction in defect states and an enhancement in phase stability, enabling the fabrication of perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 17.4%. By further integrating the MWP front cell with an organic BHJ (PM6:CH1007) rare cell composed of a nonfullerene acceptor with absorption extended to 950 nm, a tandem cell with PCE over 21% is achieved. The effect of formamidinium (FA+) on modulating methylammonium (MA+) based (mixed‐halide wide‐bandgap preovskites) MWPs (MA1.06PbI2Br(SCN)0.12) crystallization properties for achieving high‐quality perovskite films is evaluated. Based on the optimized MA0.96FA0.1PbI2Br(SCN)0.12 film, a monolithic perovskite/organic tandem solar cells with a new record high‐efficiency of 21.2% is achieved.

Abstract:Wide-bandgap (Eg) perovskites (PVSK) are important materials for realizing high-efficiency tandem devices that surpass the efficiency limit of single-junction solar cells. However, they suffer from phase separation and opencircuit voltage (Voc) loss. This study demonstrated a facile fabrication strategy of highly efficient and stable wideEg PVSKs through an organic halide surface treatment with formamidinium bromide to CH3NH3PbI3-xClx. The concurrent diffusion of organic cations and halide ions from the surface into bulk PVSK results in the complete conversion of the PVSK crystallinity to a cubic phase, eliminating segregated secondary phases and reducing unreacted PbI2. Br incorporation induces halide redistribution, resulting in the formation of triple-halide wide-Eg PVSK. The complete reconstruction of the bulk and surface of PVSK by surface post-treatment suppresses trapinduced nonradiative recombination and decreases the Urbach tail energy. Inverted PVSK solar cells based on the reconstructed PVSK exhibit enhanced photovoltaic performance with a low Voc deficit and high stability. In addition, we demonstrated a four-terminal (4-T) tandem device based on the triple-halide wide-Eg PVSK as a top cell combining with a Cu(In,Ga)Se2 bottom cell, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 24.5 %.
