Abstract:This article reports the results of an investigation into the efficiency of mechanical activation to increase the reactivity in alkali activated mortar synthesized from low-grade clay. Mechanical activation significantly changed the structure of clay, increasing the specific surface area, and decreasing the particle size. The 7-day compressive strength of mortar synthesized from untreated clay was 31.7 MPa, which increased to 35.3 after 4 h milling. A further increase of grinding time to 8 h did not result in any increase in compressive strength which is attributed to a decrease in the workability. However, the extent of reactivity did significantly increase as determined from solid-state MAS NMR, FTIR, and EDS analyses. Solid-state MAS NMR results revealed the increased formation of Q4(2Al) silicon sites, which is correlated with improved reaction. Furthermore, the EDS and FTIR analysis results indicated greater incorporation of aluminium into the matrix structure with increased grinding time.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the reactivity of low - grade clay during the alkaline activation process through mechanical activation, thereby preparing alkaline - activated materials (AAM) with better performance. Specifically, the research aims to explore the influence of mechanical activation on the structure and reactivity of low - grade clay, in the hope of finding a low - energy - consumption and environmentally - friendly method to replace the traditional calcination process, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving material properties. ### Main problem summary: 1. **Improve the reactivity of low - grade clay**: - The natural reactivity of low - grade clay is low, and it is difficult to be directly used for efficient alkaline activation. Therefore, a method needs to be found to improve its reactivity. 2. **Reduce energy consumption and environmental impact**: - Traditionally, high - temperature calcination can improve the reactivity of clay, but this method has high energy consumption and will increase carbon dioxide emissions. Mechanical activation, as an alternative method, can achieve a similar effect with lower energy consumption. 3. **Optimize mechanical activation parameters**: - Research the influence of different mechanical activation times (such as 4 hours and 8 hours) on the physical and chemical properties of clay, and how these changes affect the mechanical properties (such as compressive strength) of the final material. ### Specific objectives: - **Evaluate the effect of mechanical activation**: Verify through experiments whether mechanical activation can significantly change the microstructure of clay (such as specific surface area, particle size distribution, etc.), thereby improving its reactivity in an alkaline medium. - **Analyze material properties**: Study the mechanical properties (such as compressive strength) and microstructure (such as porosity, Si - Al bonding state, etc.) of alkaline - activated materials synthesized from mechanically - activated clay. - **Explore the optimal activation conditions**: Determine the optimal time and conditions for mechanical activation to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact while ensuring material properties. Through these studies, the author hopes to provide theoretical and technical support for the development of new and environmentally - friendly building materials.
