Abstract:The building A of Minda Plaza was adopted the SRC frame and shear wall structural system.Due to the functional need,the beams were deleted from the spindle-shape outmost frames,where the columns were arranged in an inclined orientation with the principal floor axes.The transfer story was of particular challenge,thus a new type of composite beam with encased built-up double steel sections was designed.The satisfactory performance of the new structural system was validated through quasi-static loading tests and shake-table test.The structure was exhibited to follow the failure mechanism of "strong columns,weak beams,stronger transfer beams,and the strongest connection".The steel reinforced concrete transfer beams with double-steel sections had satisfactory bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity,suitable to meet the requirements of functional limitation.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on seismic behavior of a composite structural frame system consisting of concrete filled steel tube columns and steel beams with bolted endplate connections. Based on current seismic provisions and previous research, a ten-story prototype building was designed. Analytical models were developed to predict the elasto-plastic behavior of the prototype frame under a series of ground motion records. A four-seventh scale sub-structure model consisting of two stories and one and half span was constructed and subjected to simulated seismic excitations using pseudo-dynamic hybrid testing method. Results from the tests indicate that the model behavior under the simulated seismic loading was consistent with the expected performances analyzed for different earthquake hazard levels. Finally, quasi-static test and pushover test were also conducted to identify the ultimate failure mode of the testing model. The study shows that the proposed system can offer appropriate strength and adequate ductility required for seismic design.

Abstract:One of the most significant lessons learned from the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the 1995 Kobe earthquake was the cracking and brittle failure of welded moment connections of modem steel buildings. Important progress has been made, resulting in improved designs. One possible solution for improving the design and construction of moment resisting frame (MRF) buildings ranging in height from mid-rise to high-rise may be the adoption of composite steel and concrete MRF systems in the regions of high seismicity. Because of the existence of reinforced concrete and the high stiffness in a composite MRF, the deformation demand to the encased steel joints becomes less than in a pure steel MRF. Smoother force transfer mechanisms with less stress concentration can be expected in a composite beam-to-column connection. Thus, the development of composite MRFs can provide the structural design and construction professions with an alternative structural system. In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and will be studied by the authors. This paper describes the proposed concepts and analysis of testing specimens.

Abstract:Steel-timber hybrid structural systems offer a modern solution for building multi-story structures with more environmentally-friendly features. This paper presents a comprehensive seismic performance assessment for a kind of multi-story steel-timber hybrid structure. In such a hybrid structure, steel moment resisting frames are infilled with prefabricated light wood frame shear walls to serve as the lateral load resisting system (LLRS). In this paper, drift-based performance objectives under various seismic hazard levels were proposed based on experimental observations. Then, a numerical model of the hybrid structure considering damage accumulation and stiffness degradation was developed and verified by experimental results, and nonlinear time-history analyses were conducted to establish a database of seismic responses. The numerical results further serve as a technical basis for estimating the structure's fundamental period and evaluating post-yielding behavior and failure probabilities of the hybrid structure under various seismic hazard levels. A load sharing parameter was defined to describe the wall-frame lateral force distribution, and a formula was proposed and calibrated by the time-history analytical results to estimate the load sharing parameter. Moreover, earthquake-induced non-structural damage and residual deformation were also evaluated, showing that if designed properly, desirable seismic performance with acceptable repair effort can be obtained for the proposed steel-timber hybrid structural system.

Seismic Design and Application of Hybrid Coupled Walls with Replaceable Steel Coupling Beams in High‐rise Buildings

Abstract:An innovative hybrid coupled wall system consists of reinforced concrete (RC) wall piers connected with replaceable steel coupling beams (RSCBs) throughout their height. The RSCBs are designed with a central “fuse” shear link connected to steel beam segments at both ends, which are capacity designed to remain elastic. During a damaging earthquake, the fuse shear links yield and dissipate seismic energy, and once damaged, they can be easily replaced due to specialized link‐to‐beam connection details. Therefore, this system is expected to provide enhanced seismic performance over a conventional RC coupled wall system, particularly in terms of repair costs and time after damaging earthquakes. This paper presents an overview of seismic design considerations of this new system, which is intended as a guide for design practitioners to adopt the system. Design procedure of this system is first summarized, followed by description of the coupling ratio selection, member sizing, connection detailing, and modeling recommendations of the system. Furthermore, an analytical case study for a high‐rise building is presented to highlight the benefit of using this system for enhancement to overall building performance. In the end, this paper presents a few real‐world applications of RSCBs in super‐tall buildings in China.

Abstract:In the design of high-rise steel structures in China, structural designers are willing to adopt the steel-concrete hybrid structure system, and the building height is getting higher and higher. The steel-concrete hybrid structure system has the advantages of fast construction speed of steel structure, high stiffness of concrete structure and low cost. It is considered to be a better structural form of high-rise buildings in line with China's national conditions. In earthquakes, the rapid release of energy from the earth's crust causes earthquakes. In the high-rise building system, reinforced concrete structure is the main form of building structure. Therefore, for the theoretical calculation model of this structural system, the relative displacement control between structural layers under the action of frequent earthquakes. And the research needs of structural failure modes under the rare earthquakes are becoming more and more urgent. In this paper, the seismic response analysis model of high-rise mixed structure is established based on the seismic design principle of hybrid structure, and the seismic behavior of high-rise steel-concrete hybrid structure under two-way seismic action is discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, a novel type of hybrid coupled wall (HCW), which consists of reinforced concrete (RC) wall piers and replaceable steel coupling beams (RSCBs), has been proposed for enhancing the seismic resilience of high-rise buildings. This paper presents the assessment of the seismic performance of an 11-story building located in a highly seismic area and designed per modern Chinese codes. The building adopts the frame-shear wall interacting system. For comparison, two cases are considered: one using the novel hybrid coupled walls and another using conventional RC coupled walls (RCW). The dynamic response of the buildings under high intensities of ground motion shaking is obtained from nonlinear dynamic analysis in OpenSees. The seismic performance, expressed in terms of repair cost and time, is assessed based on the FEMA P-58 method. The results indicate that most of the damage is concentrated in the coupling beams and nonstructural components. The use of novel HCWs instead of conventional RCWs results in maximum interstory drifts up to 24.5% lower in the HCW building than the RCW building when subjected to a maximum considered earthquake (MCE) intensity. Novel HCWs result in a reduction of 50.8% and 60.5% in the median building repair cost and time, respectively, under MCE, due to less damage to coupling beams and RC frames and easy replacement of RSCBs after a damaging earthquake. It is also noted that HCWs have limited influence on the peak floor accelerations, and thus the repair cost and time for acceleration-sensitive non-structural components are similar for both the HCW building and the RCW building.

Abstract:A cross-laminated timber (CLT) wall is a composite structural assembly with high strength and stiffness properties. In this study, the beneficial properties of this wall were used in designing a new CLT-reinforced concrete (RC) hybrid system building. The hybrid system consisted of an RC moment-resisting frame with CLT infill. The energy dissipation capacity of this system was further enhanced by using steel slit dampers as connectors between the CLT and RC beam. To facilitate the adoption of new technology in earthquake engineering applications, direct displacement-based design was used. The utility of the proposed system was illustrated on a six-story CLT-RC frame dual system. Performance of the proposed design method was shown by conducting nonlinear time history analyses with consideration of seismicity of Vancouver, Canada. The results indicated that the proposed CLT-RC hybrid system is capable of withstanding lateral forces due to intense seismic excitations.

Abstract:Multi-cellular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been widely used in frame structures for seismic resisting purposes. In this paper, the seismic performance of single-story composite frame structures, consisting of T-shaped multi-cellular CFST (TM-CFST) columns connected with steel beams, was investigated. Four specimens of the composite frame structures under constant vertical compressive loads and quasi-static lateral cyclic loads were tested to explore the hysteretic performance. Refined finite element (FE) models were developed to provide a benchmark modeling approach that was able to accurately capture the mechanical behavior of the composite frame structures. The FE analysis results were compared with those measured from tests, showing satisfactory coincidence between the experimental and simulated results. Hence, the validity of the setup in the FE model was verified. Following the validation of the FE modeling approach, a parametric study was conducted, involving the parameters of axial force ratio, beam-to-column linear stiffness ratio, cross-sectional dimensions of columns and width of frame. On this basis, the seismic performance of the composite frames was investigated by analyzing the characteristics including stiffness, strength, ductility, and energy-dissipating abilities. The TMCFST frames are applicable for low- and medium-rise building structures. In practical designs of the TM-CFST frames, the beam-to-column stiffness ratios should be carefully selected to guarantee that the beam reaches full-sectional plasticity before the column at the beam-column joint, fulfilling the requirement of seismic resistant designs.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, Ahead of Print. This paper introduces a new low-damage hybrid steel–timber rocking braced frame with self-centring capability and proposes a design methodology in the framework of Canadian design standards. This system consists of a gravity load-resisting timber frame and a steel concentrically braced frame acting as the lateral load-resisting system that is connected using U-shaped steel fuses. The self-centring capability is achieved by post-tensioning strands and rocking bases within the lateral load-resisting system. The system, along with its components, is first introduced. The proposed design method and system performance objectives are then presented. The seismic performance of the system and the proposed design procedure are validated through numerical analyses considering the interaction between the lateral and gravity load-resisting systems. The results of dynamic analyses confirm the enhanced seismic performance of the proposed hybrid system with almost no residual deformations after the earthquake. Moreover, the proposed design guidelines can accurately predict the system's seismic response and demands imposed on the members.

Abstract:The benefits of using wood in tall and commercial construction are undisputed, namely reducing the carbon footprint, shortening construction times, and enhancing seismic and building physics performance. The international market for wood as a structural material in tall and non-residential construction, however, is still relatively untapped. China is home to the world’s largest population and the largest construction sector worldwide, yet wood products are only used in a small fraction of buildings. The main reasons for this situation are the fire regulations and lack of guidelines for novel wood-based structural systems. This paper describes the design of a 10-storey timber-concrete business hotel which will be erected in the Guizhou province of China. The foundation design, gravity system design, lateral load resisting system design, seismic analysis and the fire resistance design were conducted, and the procedure provided appropriate information to the technological feasibility to promote the development of timber-based hybrid high-rise construction systems in China.

Abstract:Earthquake Spectra, Ahead of Print. Balloon-type cross-laminated timber coupled-wall (CLT-CW) structure is an emerging and sustainable option for constructing tall timber buildings. The structure features buckling restrained brace (BRB) hold-downs, balloon-type CLT walls, and coupling beams with replaceable shear links. This study investigates the probabilistic seismic performance (including economic loss, downtime, and resilience index) of a 20-story CLT-CW building. A three-dimensional (3D) structural model is developed to perform incremental dynamic analysis using 30 pairs of ground motion records that represent the seismicity of Vancouver, Canada. Intensity- and time-based loss assessments are conducted to estimate probability distributions of seismic losses according to the FEMA P-58 methodology. Post-earthquake recovery trajectories of the housing function are also presented to calculate the seismic resilience indices under different intensities. The results reveal that the coupling beams contribute the most to repair cost among all structural components. In light of the replaceability and energy dissipating role of coupling beams, the efficiency and resiliency of the CLT-CW building are validated.

Abstract:The vertical hybrid structure is the structure with upper steel and lower concrete components (S/RC structure).Because of its advantages in architectures and structures,it has been used in critical engineering projects in China.However,the changes of the vertical stiffness of S/RC structure make the building performance more complex than the ordinary structures when subjected to seismic load.In this paper,in order to study the seismic behavior of a structure located in 6 seismic intensity (0.05 g) area,PERFORM-3D was used to perform elasto-plastic time history analysis.Besides,this paper analyses the deformation、dissipation 、whipping effect and failure mode,and evaluate its seismic behavior.The calculation results indicate that the inter story drift becomes dramatically at the floors where vertical stiffness changes and it is rational in the dissipation and can meet the requirement of the 3-level design.

Abstract:Timber–concrete hybrid structural systems are a practical option to provide tall mass timber buildings with a lateral load-resisting system. This paper discusses the dynamic behavior of an 18-story timber–concrete hybrid building based on the vibration properties evaluated by on-site vibration tests. First, microtremor measurements and human-powered excitation tests were carried out and the obtained vibration data were analyzed using a stochastic subspace identification method to derive natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. Then, a finite-element (FE) model was developed based on detailed structural design information, and its eigenvalues and eigenvectors were compared with the test results. The vibration test results showed various mode shapes, including in-plane deformation of the floor diaphragm composed of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The damping ratios in all the modes were scattered between 1 and 3%, and no frequency dependency was observed. The modal properties of the FE model agreed well with the test results by considering the additional stiffness of non-structural components. In order to simulate the in-plane deformation of the CLT floor diaphragm, detailed modeling of the connection between each CLT floor panel and the connection between CLT floor panels and concrete cores is recommended. The findings provide practitioners with an insight into dynamic properties and FE modeling methods of tall timber–concrete hybrid buildings.

Abstract:<span>This study presents a novel hybrid self-centering system aiming to overcome critical shortcomings identified in the existing self-centering solution. Two types of hybrid brace incorporating shape memory alloy elements and integrated viscoelastic dampers are first introduced, followed by a system-level analysis on a series of prototype buildings. The results show that using viscoelastic material to reach a moderate damping ratio is highly effective in peak and residual deformation control. Floor acceleration is also effectively controlled by the hybrid solution. A parametric study is then conducted, and design recommendations are given. A probability-based residual deformation prediction model is finally proposed.</span>

Abstract:In the last two decades, mass timber structures have gained popularity in mid-rise or tall building applications worldwide. For timber buildings in seismic regions, it is critical to improve building seismic resilience. Conventional timber structures rely on connections for energy dissipation and system ductility. However, this dependence also carries the risk of damage, potentially resulting in structures that are irreparable in severe earthquakes. In this regard, as one of the low-damage seismic design technologies, self-centering (SC) techniques have been introduced to mass timber structures in 2005. The relevant research and applications have led to significant technological progress in the field. This paper provides an overview of recent research progress since 2019, encompassing experimental studies, analytical and numerical simulations, key design aspects, and practical applications of SC mass timber structures. It highlights recent technological advancements and identifies future research directions to address knowledge gaps identified in this review.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on dynamic characteristics and seismic responses of traditional Chinese timber-frame structures. Micro-tremor measurements were conducted to obtain natural frequencies, vibration modes, and damping ratios. A three-dimensional numerical model considering unique connections, the mass of roof and wooden floor, and adobe walls was developed by ANSYS software and calibrated with the data from prior on-site test. Seismic responses including time histories responses, inter-structural layer drift angles, and isolation characteristics were further discussed. Results indicate that both mortise-tenon joints and the Dougong brackets play an essential role in the vibration isolation and strong lateral force resistance. Also, Dougong fully deforms under the major earthquakes, thereby dissipating more seismic energy. The lateral stiffness of column-beam frame is lower than that of the roof truss. The seismic abilities of the whole structure under the Lanzhou wave are smaller than those under the El Centro wave and the Taft wave.

Self-Centering Steel-Timber Hybrid Shear Wall: Experimental Test and Parametric Analysis

Abstract:Due to timber material's environmental benefits and satisfactory structural properties, the studies on providing solutions to the application of timber to mid-rise or even high-rise buildings have been recently increasing. Among them, the steel-timber hybrid shear wall (STHSW) is one of the promising lateral resisting systems. However, the application of the system is limited because of its unsatisfactory earthquake resilience. In this paper, a new system, self-centering (SC)-STHSW, is proposed by introducing post-tensioned (PT) technology into the STHSW system. The cyclic loading test of one full-scale SC-STHSW specimen was conducted. The new system was proved to have both satisfactory self-centering capacity and the sufficient energy dissipation. Within the OpenSees platform, a numerical model was developed and validated by the experiment result. The model was further used in the parametric analysis. The system's self-centering capacity, energy dissipation performance and the ultimate strength were evaluated under multiple parameters. The parameters included the initial PT stress ratio, the relative value of the damper's activation force, the wood shear wall's resistance, the beam section height and the wood shear wall's strength. The lateral wall-to-frame stiffness ratio was also considered. Each parameter's effects on three different performances of the system were analyzed. Based on the analysis results, a design parameter, a self-centering ratio, was proposed. The ratio was suggested to be larger than 0.5 to ensure a favorable self-centering performance in the system. This study provides support to the application of the innovative steel-timber hybrid structural system in practical engineering.
Multi-hazard design of low-damage high-rise steel–timber buildings subjected to wind and earthquake loading

Abstract:This work focuses on the design trade-off aspects related to the structural behavior of tall buildings subjected to the actions of wind and earthquake and on the feasibility of adopting innovative low-damage structural systems and connections combining engineered wood and steel. A multi-hazard approach is developed and proposed, through the use of an efficient equivalent baseline reference to compare the structural performance under two independent whilst competing hazards. Following a capacity-vs-demand approach an Acceleration Displacement Response Spectrum (ADRS) domain, well established in the earthquake engineering environment, is suggested to be extended and adapted to wind design. The innovative procedure is developed and implemented with reference to two case study tall buildings, 18 storey and 36 storey high, respectively. The use of either traditional steel-only connections or innovative low-damage steel-timber hybrid - unbonded post-tensioned rocking-dissipative – connections are employed and compared. Two difference constructions sites are considered: 1) a high seismicity and low wind zone and 2) low seismicity and high wind zone. A Direct Displacement Based Design (DBDD) procedure is firstly implemented to design the structural system targeting the desired level of seismic performance. Then the effects of wind loading are estimated through the analytical procedure provided by the Italian National Research Council (CNR), which allows to calculate wind-induced forces and peak floor accelerations. Peak interstorey drifts are selected as seismic performance indicator, while peak floor accelerations are selected as wind performance indicator with the intent to focus on the building occupants' comfort serviceability limit state. The predicted structural performances are then numerically validated through time series/history analyses under earthquake and wind loading with a lumped plasticity global model of the case-study buildings. Finally, the structural responses under the two actions are compared within the proposed innovative common baseline ADRS domain, allowing to establish the governing design hazard depending on the intensity levels and adopted return periods. Based on these developments, a true multi-hazard approach is proposed for the preliminary design phase of a building subjected to wind and earthquake loading.
