Abstract:Land-subsidence prediction depends on an appropriate subsidence model and the calibration of its parameter values. A modified inverse procedure is developed and applied to calibrate five parameters in a compacting confined aquifer system using records of field data from vertical extensometers and corresponding hydrographs. The inverse procedure of COMPAC (InvCOMPAC) has been used in the past for calibrating vertical hydraulic conductivity of the aquitards, nonrecoverable and recoverable skeletal specific storages of the aquitards, skeletal specific storage of the aquifers, and initial preconsolidation stress within the aquitards. InvCOMPAC is modified to increase robustness in this study. There are two main differences in the modified InvCOMPAC model (MInvCOMPAC). One is that field data are smoothed before diagram analysis to reduce local oscillation of data and remove abnormal data points. A robust locally weighted regression method is applied to smooth the field data. The other difference is that the Newton-Raphson method, with a variable scale factor, is used to conduct the computer-based inverse adjustment procedure. MInvCOMPAC is then applied to calibrate parameters in a land subsidence model of Shanghai, China. Five parameters of aquifers and aquitards at 15 multiple-extensometer sites are calibrated. Vertical deformation of sedimentary layers can be predicted by the one-dimensional COMPAC model with these calibrated parameters at extensometer sites. These calibrated parameters could also serve as good initial values for parameters of three-dimensional regional land subsidence models of Shanghai.

Abstract:Land subsidence is a global phenomenon that derives from natural processes such as auto-compaction and tectonic activity, as well as anthropogenic activities that are exemplified by withdrawal of water, oil or other fluids from the subsurface. Fluid withdrawal-induced subsidence has become a threat in densely populated zones such as coastal areas, especially in this era of growing climate change impacts when hydrological changes may not enable sufficient recharge of aquifers to replenish withdrawn water. It is important to estimate settlement for design of counter-measures: a challenge in areas of complex sedimentary history and geomedia stratification. Herein is presented the methodology and results of configuration of the Logistics Model using measured settlement data to predict future settlement in the coastal town of Tianjin, P.R. China with validation using continuous strata deformation data obtained through borehole distributed fiber-optic sensing. The cumulative subsidence over the October 2017-December 2019 period reached 56 mm with an estimated potential limit of 96 mm, leaving a balance of 42.0% of the total for attainment in the future. Subsidence of the area is estimated to reach the “stability subsidence stage” by 2050. In the G06 borehole depth range of 3.4–18.4 m which comprises clayey silty sand and silty fine sand, the measured deformation accounts for 58.5% of the total while the residual (future) deformation is 37.6% of that total. The depth ranges of 0–3.4 m (shallow stratum) and 18.4–38.4 m (deep stratum) constitute the “priority layer” because the strata are still in the “accelerated subsidence stage” that is characterized by high subsidence rate estimates for the future. Thus, the projected high subsidence rates of the two layers warrant the design and implementation of proactive countermeasures.

Abstract:Climate-induced sea-level rise and vertical land movements, including natural and human-induced subsidence in sedimentary coastal lowlands, combine to change relative sea levels around the world's coasts. Although this affects local rates of sea-level rise, assessments of the coastal impacts of subsidence are lacking on a global scale. Here, we quantify global-mean relative sea-level rise to be 2.5 mm yr−1 over the past two decades. However, as coastal inhabitants are preferentially located in subsiding locations, they experience an average relative sea-level rise up to four times faster at 7.8 to 9.9 mm yr−1. These results indicate that the impacts and adaptation needs are much higher than reported global sea-level rise measurements suggest. In particular, human-induced subsidence in and surrounding coastal cities can be rapidly reduced with appropriate policy for groundwater utilization and drainage. Such policy would offer substantial and rapid benefits to reduce growth of coastal flood exposure due to relative sea-level rise.

Abstract:Land subsidence and sea level rise are well-known, ongoing problems that are negatively impacting the entire Texas coast. Although ground-based monitoring techniques using long-term global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) records provide accurate subsidence rates, they are labor intensive, expensive, time-consuming, and spatially limited. In this study, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data and techniques were used to map the locations and quantify rates of land subsidence in the Texas Coastal Bend region during the period from October 2016 to July 2019. InSAR-derived land subsidence rates were then validated and calibrated against GNSS-derived rates. The factors controlling the observed land subsidence rates and locations were investigated. The consequences of spatial variability in land subsidence rates in Coastal Bend were also examined. The results indicated that: (1) land subsidence rates in the Texas Coastal Bend exhibited spatial variability, (2) InSAR-derived land subsidence rates were consistent with GNSS-derived deformation rates, (3) land subsidence in the Texas Coastal Bend could be attributed mainly to hydrocarbon and groundwater extraction as well as vertical movements along growth faults, and (4) land subsidence increased both flood frequency and severity in the Texas Coastal Bend. Our results provide valuable information regarding not only land deformation rates in the Texas Coastal Bend region, but also the effectiveness of interferometric techniques for other coastal rural areas around the globe.

In this paper, a numerical model DIVAST (Depth Integrated Velocities And Solute Transport), which can predict two-dimensional depth-integrated tidal flows and solute transport, has been refined and set up to stimulate hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes. The highly accurate ULTIMATE QUICKEST scheme has been used to represent the advective terms in solving the advective-diffusion equation for suspended sediment transport. The model has been applied to simulate tidal flows and sediment fluxes in the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary in the U.K. The predicted velocities and water elevations have been compared with three sets of Admiralty Chart data. Comparisons between the numerical model predictions of sediment fluxes and field data were made at two sites along the estuary where field data existed. The resulting comparisons are encouraging.

Abstract:Shanghai city has been suffering land subsidence caused by overly exploitation of ground water since 1921, which is a serious problem for this coastal city with altitude of 2.2–4.8 m above mean sea level. The largest cumulative land subsidence amounted to 2.6 m in the downtown area. Measures to decrease the ground water exploitation, change the pumping aquifers, and increase aquifer artificial recharge have been used to mitigate land subsidence since 1961. It is necessary to develop a proper numerical model to simulate and predict land subsidence. In this study, a decoupled three-dimensional (3-D) finite element land subsidence model including a 3-D ground water flow model and a 3-D geo-mechanical model was developed to simulate the 3-D deformation of the aquifer systems in the center area of Shanghai. The area of downtown Shanghai is 660 km2, with 10 million inhabitants, dense high buildings, and 11 metro lines. The simulation spans the period from 1979 to 1995. Two different assumptions have been tested on the side boundary, i.e., precluding the three components of the displacement, or assuming a free-displacement condition. The distribution of calculated land subsidence and horizontal displacements in different aquifers was analyzed. The computed vertical displacement fitted well with the available observations. It has been verified that the two different assumptions on the lateral boundaries in the geo-mechanical model caused different results just limited on nodes close to boundary. The developed 3-D land subsidence model is reasonable and can be used to simulate and predict 3-D movement of aquifer systems in the center area of Shanghai, which could provide scientific support to local government in controlling land subsidence and differential movements of the land surface.
