Abstract:The article is a review of the book by D. Davies Death, Ritual, and Belief: The Rhetoric of Funerary Rites (Moscow: NLO, 2022. 480 p.). The author notes the growing interest of society in the phenomenon of death and makes an attempt to systematize the key aspects of this phenomenon: from funeral rites in various cultures to near-death experiences and theories of grief. In the review, the emphasis is placed on two main ideas of the book: how words and rituals influence our dealing with death and how the phenomenon of death affects our identity. The review identifies both the strengths of the book and those aspects that require a further study, such as the impact of technology on society’s perception of death (contemporary interdisciplinary studies called ‘digital death studies’).
Reading intimacy, resistance and intertextuality in Zadie Smith’s Grand Union

Abstract:This article focuses on Zadie Smith’s experimental short story ‘Kelso Deconstructed’, published in her first short story collection Grand Union (2019). The story reimagines the last day in the life of Kelso Cochrane, who migrated to Britain during the post-war period as part of the Windrush generation, and who was murdered in 1959. The aim of this article is twofold. Firstly, I situate ‘Kelso Deconstructed’ within Smith’s preoccupations with matters of intimacy, writing and resistance in Grand Union , and in her essay collection Intimations (2020). Secondly, I examine Smith’s rewriting of this historical event through her use of intertextual references to Toni Morrison, Francis Ponge, Leo Tolstoy and Toni Cade Bambara. Ultimately, this article argues that Smith uses multiple strategies to create proximity between readers and the historical events depicted, and to deconstruct the symbol of Kelso Cochrane to instead offer an intimate representation of a singular human being.
Existential, theological, and psychological concepts of death: a personal retrospective

Abstract:Before Freud, the study of death belonged strictly in the contexts of religion and philosophy, but in the 20th Century, death and dying began to enter into dialogue with the social sciences of psychology and sociology. The existentialists began to portray death differently in their literary-based philosophy, and by the end of the century four major American writers had dealt squarely with death in a theological framework. The author's own personal experiences and academic endeavors frame this evolution in theories about death and dying, beginning with a Master's thesis in college and ending with a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in a shock trauma hospital. In this article the mystery of death is examined from three distinct points of view: literary (including existentialism, a philosophy as literature), theological and psychological, based upon the author's career as a professor of literature, as seminary student, and as a recent participant in Clinical Pastoral Education. An attempt at a synthesis of these three strands of inquiry is made at the end of this personal and academic journey.

Abstract:Vesna Kapor’s novel Nebo, tako duboko thematizes the origins, emotional and spiritual implications of the premature death of the nineteen-year-old girl Tara Senica. Given the thematic-motive scope of the novel, in which the interference of life and death is elaborated, the paper, from the point of view of religious philosophy, affective narratology and metapoetic studies, identifies and analyzes forms of religious and aesthetic spirituality and explicates formulas for deciphering human Destiny. Different models of religious spir- ituality are considered: Orthodox Christianity, mythical-symbolic and folklore elements, as well as the contemporary concept of the world which is immanently antagonistic. Finally, in the aesthetic layer of the novel two domains of spirituality can be distinguished. The first one ‒ Sumatraism ‒ can be recognized in previous Kapor’s novels, although altered and reshaped. The second domain is reflected in Kapor’s poetic self-awareness ‒ the story itself is a formative force, a testimony and a mnemotechnic that puts life before death. It can be concluded that in this novel religious spirituality is replaced by aesthetic spirituality and crowned with the life-giving principle of the story.

Abstract:The current paper reflects on the issue of attitudes toward death. More specifically, how to face the death of a loved one. In general, most people avoid the topic of death in their daily lives until, that is, a close acquaintance or important person passes away. In preparation for this inevitability, education on the topic of death is much needed. For this purpose, this paper will conduct a philosophical analysis of fiction novel protagonist’s attitudes towards death as they encounter the subject, in order to lay a foundation for humanities-based education on the subject. Analysis centers upon the protagonist Momo in Romain Gary’s novel, La Vie devant soi (1975). The character’s attitude toward death and personal encounter with the death of a loved one will be analyzed through the framework of philosopher Karl Jasper’s theories. Momo’s attitude can be explained with Jaspers’ dual perceptions toward death: one is death as a futile end, and the other is death as an opportunity to define oneself and make decisions accordingly. In Jaspers’ own words, one is to perceive death as a “situation” while the other is to see it as a “boundary situation.” The analysis is an amalgam of both literary and philosophical approaches towards attitudes toward death, for the objective of discovering the existential self and true meaning of life, and ultimately discover the means of educating the public about death as a part of life.

Abstract:In this paper I offer personal encounters with illness and death in an attempt to actualize what I am imploring analysts to pursue: a close examination of their relationship with mortality. I lament the problematic absence of attention to mortality in psychoanalytic theory and therapy and argue that we must undertake preparatory work in this realm to avoid harming those we endeavor to support and to promote generative opportunities for growth and healing for our patients and ourselves.

The death effect in literary evaluation: reverence for the dead?

Abstract:It is commonly believed that the value of art and other creative works increases after the death of the artist. In an attempt to examine this so-called death effect we presented a short story to N = 431 undergraduate students asking how much money they would hypothetically spend to purchase a literary work. We experimentally manipulated: 1) whether the author died or moved after publishing a short story, and, 2) the gender of the author. Participants randomly received one of four possible biographical descriptions about the author. We predicted that participants would offer higher purchase prices and subjectively evaluate the work more positively when they believed the author was dead. Results were consistent with this hypothesis perhaps reflecting a certain reverence for the dead. We also found that evaluations of the story were more favorable when the purported gender of the author matched that of the participant.

Abstract:In this paper we will try to identify the literary and linguistic symbols of the fatal signs of death, focusing on the concept of "happy death" as a key concept in the literature of Dino Buzzati. The literature of this author passes from the traditional writing to the narrative forms of magical realism, and unfolds an imagination which shows how the reality of this world cannot be separated from the mystery of our daily existence. Also, we will analyse if there is a connection between Buzzati’s literary vision and the metaphysical debate on the existence of God. These research questions, aim to highlight the fact that the most obvious novelty of Dino Buzzati's literature should be summarized in the assessment that all the echoes of Death in his works are described with humor and self-irony, ranging from jokes to punitive and apocalyptic sarcasm. Death is shrouded in the allegory of the "receiving the call"; sooner or later it knocks on the door of every human being. Buzzati's literature is precisely the attainment of such a dimension, where art becomes sublime, and it is very hard to define clear lines, between the human existence and what happens after it.

Abstract:The death-positive movement, the latest enactment of the death awareness movement, posits that contemporary societies are suffering under a 'death taboo' and that people should talk more about death. In this article, we analyse an international social franchise aligned with this movement – Death Café – whereby strangers gather in a café setting to talk informally about death and dying. Drawing on interviews conducted with 49 Death Café organisers in 34 countries, we apply the theories of Zygmunt Bauman to interpret this social initiative. Our analysis shows that the way in which the temporary café space is staged for atmosphere and attended by strangers who engage in 'taboo' conversation, all serves to engender feelings of intimacy and connection. Rather than viewing Death Cafés as primarily spaces for death awareness-raising, we interpret them as paradigmatic examples of what Bauman termed 'peg' communities, constructed to assuage the loneliness experienced by individuals in liquid modernity.

Abstract:Grieving in high-speed society. An acceleration-focused temporal perspective Objectives: How long does it take the bereaved to cope with a loss of a significant other? Early findings assume weeks. Later studies speak of years. Nevertheless, the grace period for the bereaved in the modern world seems to be constantly shortening, despite objectively constant time, multiple time gains and savings. Methods: The process of acceleration described by Hartmut Rosa offers an explanation for this paradoxical disproportion. From a time-analytic perspective, it becomes clear that coping with loss runs counter to the dynamization of society. Results: Grief as a bio-psychological process cannot be accelerated as such. Instead of therapy-immanent solutions, changes are needed that are reflected on a societal level. Conclusions: The approaches 'grief literacy' and 'compassionate communities' can help to implement bereavement into the society as a whole.

Abstract:The following is a discussion of papers by Kozlowski and Lentz that explore the presence of mortality in the analytic relationship. The author reflects on challenges to the dyad, the vulnerability of the analyst, and how the individual and analytic pair may confront their existential reality separately or together. The author includes the idea of "death origin stories" to emphasize that mortality has a presence throughout the life of the individual; she suggests how psychoanalytic theory and technique may be enhanced by including an explanation of the earliest penetration of death into consciousness and whether this lens may enhance our sensitivity to mortality and our ability to manage loss and endings.

Abstract:Montaigne remarks in his essay on death (the name of which is quoted in my own essay's title): “All days travel towards death, the last one reaches it.” (p. 67) Seen from this perspective, death is not simply an essential part of our life, but life is our “definitive journey” towards death. How shall we travel this “definitive journey” – to quote the title of a poem by Jimenez –, how can we reconcile our love of life with the knowledge of the definitiveness of our destination? For we will have to leave, if we like it or not, some sooner, some later, “but the birds will stay, singing,” as Jimenez says in his poem. The world will continue in its natural course, hardly taking notice.

Abstract:Teletechnologies are changing the way we cope with loss and grief. Apart from their romanticized relationship with death in the history of literature, teletechnologies also figure prominently as productive metaphors in critical theories. Psychoanalysis and deconstruction view telecommunication in its various forms as intricately connected to notions of telepathy and the unconscious, a point shared by Don DeLillo’s The Body Artist and Nicholas Royle’s Quilt. Both novels attach great importance to how the process of individual mourning, in the presence of different forms of technologies, is inscribed with a distinctive telepathic effect. Specifically, DeLillo’s text portrays the radio as an uncanny harbinger of death, and Quilt forges a link between the faltered telephone communication and the spectral moments when the dead is calling. The article proposes to conceive, from a psychoanalytical perspective, the subject of teletechnologies as a critical starting point to address related issues of telepathy and telecommunication and to understand death as loss in the contemporary age.

Abstract:With the perpetuation of violence in Mexico, traditional forms of mourning and burial have become increasingly inaccessible to victims and their families. Widespread bloodshed has not only resulted in mass burials of unnamed victims, but the Mexican government furthers the trauma by discouraging institutional processes that would otherwise bring closure and recognition to affected families. In response to the institutions that have rendered victims invisible, this article argues that Mexican contemporary artists have created their own spaces of mourning, referred to as a ‘new burial,’ to repair traditions of death that have otherwise been compromised or denied entirely.

Abstract:Death and mourning are being shaped by posthumous opportunities for the dead to affect current life in ways not possible in pre-digital generations. The psychological and sociological impact of the dead "online" and of "grief tech" is only beginning to be understood. It has not yet been explored psychoanalytically until this paper that examines one type of grief tech, namely the griefbot. This development is critically explored through a psychoanalytic reading of an episode of Black Mirror . I suggest that a psychoanalytic model of mourning provides an invaluable perspective to help us to think about this technology's potential as well as the psychological and ethical risks it poses. I argue that the immortalization of the dead through digital permanence works against facing the painful reality of loss and the recognition of otherness, which is fundamental to psychic growth and to the integrity of our relationships with others. Drawing on Derrida's conceptualization of "originary mourning", I suggest that mourning is an interminable process that challenges us to preserve within the self the otherness of the lost object. The tools we use for mourning need to be assessed first and foremost against this psychological and fundamentally ethical process.

Abstract:The paper deals with the effects of the regulations and restrictions on the handling of corpses and funerals among Zimbabwean migrant families who lost relatives in South Africa during the COVID-19 epidemic in the years 2020 and 2021. Interviews were conducted with members of this migrant community. The interviews revealed a range of affective and material dimensions entangled in these multiple losses, highlighting therefore experiences of truncated grief. Restrictions on funerals and burials forced immobility on the living and their dead; on bereaved communities, themselves and their corpses are forms of biopower that multiplied losses among cross-border migrant communities. The loss of autonomy of communities around death rituals and burial places constitute realms where the materiality of death is revealed. I look at both the loss of human life and the emotional losses associated with the limitations imposed on the dead body under COVID-19.
