Abstract:Grief is a core human experience. The time following the loss of a loved one is associated with an increased risk for negative health outcomes. Yet, only a few studies investigate bodily consequences of grief and consoling behaviors, specifically the potentially supportive role of interpersonal touch during grief. We conducted an online-study where participants filled in questionnaires and rated videos of short touch gestures and interactions. People who lost a loved one within the last 2 years were asked about their grief experiences and to rate the different types of touch from the perspective of a receiver. People who had not lost a close person in the last 2 years rated the touch from the perspective of providing touch to a grieving individual. The majority of the recent-loss sample reported to have perceived their own body and bodily states less after the loss. Two-thirds reported feeling the presence of the deceased at least once. Grief-sensations were experienced mostly in the chest and upper body, the same areas where the consoling effect of a hug was perceived. Overall, the recent-loss group reported amounts of wanting of the vicarious touch gestures similar to the endorsement by people taking the active touching perspective. However, discrepancies between groups were found for some types of touch, including slow affective stroking. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the body and bodily interactions like social touch in grief and consolation. Our findings can be seen as a first point of reference on how to interact with grieving individuals and could contribute to novel interventions for individuals with prolonged grief disorder.

Abstract:A recent national survey of bereaved partners found high levels of complicated grief and psychological distress, with evidence that loneliness and isolation may contribute to these outcomes. However, the mechanisms of action for this have not been explored. To advance grief theory this paper reports analysis of the survey free-text data to examine the relationship between social support and emotional responses to bereavement. Individuals bereaved of a civil partner or spouse 6–10 months previously were identified through death registration data. 569/1945 (29 %) completed surveys were received. Of those, 311 participants (55 %) provided responses to two free-text questions which asked about their 'feelings since the death of their partner or spouse', and 'about the support around' them. Data were analysed using corpus-assisted discourse analysis and the discourse dynamics approach for figurative language. Participants described diverse emotional responses to the bereavement (e.g. sadness, anger, denial, acceptance), and the value of formal and informal bereavement support. Although many of the experiences described are accounted for in existing grief theory, some participants described a liminal experience not recognised within these theories. They felt trapped, unable to engage with loss or restoration, and unable to move forward as their planned future no longer existed. They sought out 'communitas' (solidarity in experiences), but often found support from their social networks had diminished. Metaphors were used to describe this liminality, with partner grief expressed as a dark agentic force, a monster, an abyss, and as water. The findings of this study offer original insights into experiences and trajectories of bereavement, and our understandings of prolonged or complicated grief. A novel model 'Between Loss and Restoration' is presented to include these experiences. Recognition of the place for liminality within the spectrum of grief experiences could enhance grief literacy and improve formal and informal bereavement support provision.

Bereavement in Times of COVID-19: A Review and Theoretical Framework

Abstract:A review of the literature on adaptation to bereavement during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted to assess the current state of knowledge. Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were searched for studies published during the first 6 months of the COVID-19 outbreak. 44 articles were included in the review. Narrative synthesis showed that knowledge was largely based on expert assessments of prior bereavement research and professional experience; there is so far absence of empirical evidence linking features of COVID-19 bereavement situations to health outcomes. Severe negative consequences have been consistently predicted by authors. There is still relatively little consideration of positive or compensatory processes or the possibility that these could alleviate the effect of the shocking, traumatic circumstances. With two notable exceptions, there has been lack of attention to the role of theoretical models for guiding research and practice. A theoretical perspective (the Dual Process Model, DPM) was applied to the information derived from the available articles. Two features of the DPM framework illustrated its relevance: 1. It enables systematic assessment of the range of loss- and restoration-related challenges for the bereaved; 2. It speaks for extension of psychotherapeutic intervention to manage secondary, restoration- as well as primary, loss-oriented stressors; studies have demonstrated that this may increase the effectiveness of intervention. Directions for future research and DPM application are suggested.
Effects of electrical stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion on cochlear blood flow in guinea pig.

Abstract:It has been proposed that cochlear blood flow (CBF) is controlled in part by the sympathetic nervous system. In the present study the effect of electrical stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) on CBF in guinea pigs was investigated using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Animals were anesthetized with diazepam and fentanyl and the SCG was exposed. A custom-designed bipolar cuff electrode was fixed around the ganglion and 1 ms biphasic current pulses were injected at 0.15 mA to 1.5 mA, 6 Hz. Bilateral CBF was monitored, while the ganglion was stimulated for 3 or 5 min before and after the ascending sympathetic trunk and nerve branches from SCG were sectioned. Electrical stimulation of 0.5 mA caused the ipsilateral CBF (CBFi) to decrease 11.7% +/- 1.3 from the baseline (BL), while the contralateral CBF (CBFc) increased slightly due to the change in systemic blood pressure (BP). A linear relation was observed between the level of current stimulation and evoked reduction in CBF. Cervical sympathetic trunk section (between the SCG and the middle cervical ganglion) did not influence the pattern or the amplitude of CBF change in response to electrical stimulation of SCG. Sectioning the efferent fibers of the medial inferior and medial superior branch of the SCG only minimally reduced the amplitude of the CBF decrease evoked by electrical stimulation. Time in Grief: How do Bereaved Parents Mentalize It?

Abstract:In this multimethod study, we examine bereaved parents’ capacity for mentalizing the temporal dimension of their grief. The theoretical assumptions of our study draw on the clinical and anthropological perspectives on the passage of time in grief. Parents’ mentalization of their experience of grief was measured both in the attachment context, using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and using the narrative Child Loss Interview (CLI). We used thematic analysis to code parents’ mentalizing utterances in order to categorize time-related changes during the grieving process. Parents generally mentalize their grief-related experiences at a lower level of reflective functioning than their general attachment experiences. However, a higher general ability to mentalize contributes to a higher level of RF and greater coherence in mentalizing their grief. Parents experience time in grief through oscillation between the past with the deceased child and a restricted form of existence in the present reality.

Abstract:Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is associated with impairments in cognitive functioning, but the neuropsychological correlates of early grief in older adults are poorly understood. This preliminary study cross-sectionally examined neuropsychological functioning in bereaved adults with high and low grief symptoms and a non-bereaved comparison sample and further explored the relationship between multidomain cognitive measures and grief severity. A total of ninety-three nondemented older adults (high grief: n = 44; low grief: n = 49) within 12 months post-bereavement and non-bereaved comparison participants (n = 43) completed neuropsychological battery including global and multiple domain-specific cognitive functioning. Linear regression models were used to analyze differences in multidomain cognitive measures between the groups and specifically examine the associations between cognitive performance and grief severity in the bereaved, after covariate adjustment, including depressive symptoms. Bereaved older adults with higher grief symptoms performed worse than those with lower symptoms and non-bereaved participants on executive functioning and attention and processing speed measures. In the bereaved, poorer executive functioning, attention and processing speed correlated with higher grief severity. Attention/processing speed–grief severity correlation was seen in those with time since loss ≤ 6 months, but not > 6 months. Intense early grief is characterised by poorer executive functioning, attention, and processing speed, resembling findings in PGD. The putative role of poorer cognitive functioning during early grief on the transition to integrated grief or the development of PGD remains to be elucidated.

Abstract:Prolong Grief Disorder (PGD) is a condition in which mourners are stuck in the grief process for a prolonged period and continue to suffer from an intense, mal-adaptive level of grief. Despite the increased popularity of virtual mourning practices, and subsequently the emergence of HCI research in this area, there is little research looking into how continuing bonds maintained digitally promote or impede bereavement adjustment. Through a one-month diary study and in-depth interviews with 17 participants who recently lost their loved ones, we identified four broad mechanisms of how grievers engage in what we called ”backstage” grieving (as opposed to bereavement through digital public space like social media). We further discuss how this personal and private grieving is important in maintaining emotional well-being hence avoiding developing PGD, as well as possible design opportunities and challenges for future digital tools to support grieving.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the need for modifications in grief therapy to move away from viewing grief as a treatable illness. It critiques the current pathologization of grief in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and explores how this approach can hinder the natural processes of grieving. The study questions the medicalization of grief and advocates for a more humanistic framework in grief therapy, emphasizing individualized and culturally sensitive approaches to mourning. Methodology: The study utilizes a structured literature review, semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis to develop a humanistic grief therapy framework. By engaging with participants who have experienced loss and professionals in grief therapy, the research identifies key aspects of grief that extend beyond traditional diagnostic criteria. Through this qualitative approach, the study seeks to challenge the current diagnostic model and provide empathic methods for clients to express and share their unique grief narratives. Findings: The findings of this study highlight the limitations of the current diagnostic approach to grief therapy and emphasize the importance of moving towards a more compassionate and individualized understanding of grief. Through thematic analysis, the research uncovers significant aspects of grief that go beyond the criteria outlined in the DSM, emphasizing the need for a more holistic and culturally informed approach to supporting individuals in their grieving process. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Based on the study's findings, it is recommended that clinicians adopt a person-centered and culturally sensitive approach to grief therapy. The study advocates for a shift away from standardized treatment protocols towards more individualized and empathic interventions that honor the diverse ways in which individuals experience and express grief. By prioritizing empathy, understanding, and flexibility in therapeutic practice, clinicians can better support individuals through their unique mourning journeys and promote healing in a more humane and inclusive manner.

Abstract:Grief is a reaction to loss that is observed across human cultures and even in other species. While the particular expressions of grief vary significantly, universal aspects include experiences of emotional pain and frequent remembering of what was lost. Despite its prevalence, and its obvious nature, considering grief from a normative perspective is puzzling: do we grieve? Why is it ? And why is it sometimes prolonged enough to be clinically impairing? Using the framework of reinforcement learning with memory replay, we offer answers to these questions and suggest, counter-intuitively, that grief may have normative value with respect to reward maximization.

Abstract:OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying, Ahead of Print. Grief responses range from minimal changes in functioning to debilitating, prolonged, complicated grief. The objective of the current study was to clarify the relationship between maladaptive personality characteristics, coping and situational factors associated with symptoms of complicated grief and health difficulties among bereaved individuals who had lost a loved one within the past six months to two years (N = 304; 59% male; M age = 33.49, SD = 9.98, range 20–81). Situational risk factors, coping (self-distancing, denial, substance use, positive reframing, acceptance, religion, self-blame, behavioral disengagement, venting and humor) and maladaptive personality traits significantly predicted either symptoms of complicated grief or health difficulties. Coping strategies partially mediated the relationship between maladaptive personality traits and symptoms of complicated grief and health difficulties. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of maladaptive personality traits and coping strategies in the conceptualization of complicated grief and should be a greater focus of clinical intervention.

Grief and older people: the making or breaking of emotional bonds following partner loss in later life

Abstract:The aim of this ethnographic study was to explore retrospectively the grief experiences of 12 older people whose partners had recently died in hospital, following a period of terminal illness. The rationale was based upon developing an understanding of the grief experiences of newly bereaved older people. In doing so, it is important to consider that grief is not only shaped by culture and social context but also by the nature of the relationship between the mourner and the deceased. For most of this century, the dominant conceptualization relating to grief and the social experience of bereavement has been based on the psychoanalytical school of thought. This process is said to involve the mourner passing through a number of stages or phases and forms the basis of the 'grief work hypothesis'. Using in-depth ethnographic interviews, the mourner's reactions to and perceptions of the loss were explored. Tape-recorded interview data were analysed using the inductive process of both content analysis and discourse evaluation. The findings from this study shed light on an area of conjugal bereavement that has received little attention in the past and challenges traditional models of grief. The indications are that in the first year of bereavement, the bereaved retain and modify the emotional relationship with their deceased partners, through a range of symbolic behaviours. The discussion raises issues concerning the need to consider the extent to which contemporary conceptualizations of grief explain the reactions of older people whose grief experiences are shaped by their social situation. The study also highlights important issues concerning the need to understand the complexity of grief experiences and bereavement support for older people which has a number of implications for nurses in both hospital and community settings.

Abstract:Introduction The recent addition to both ICD-11 and DSM-V of "Prolonged Grief Disorder" "PGD" raises questions regarding the complexity of the clinical manifestations and the nuances of "normal/abnormal" grief. The lack of consensus in diagnosing emphasizes grief as a non-homogeneous process highly dependent on cultural nuances and the proportion of losses. Objectives Provide an open discourse on (PGD) emphasizing its multicultural aspects in the diagnosis, and debate whether it reinforces mental health stigma by "pathologizing" grief in today's multicultural society. Methods Non-systematic review of literature using key words "Grief", "Prolonged Grief Disorder", "Multicultural aspects of Grief", "Major Depressive Disorder" and "Disenfranchised Grief", on the platforms PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, "European Commission", "International Migration Outlook 2022" and "Pordata". Results Literature has not clearly provided a universal definition of grief, grief processes or the threshold of abnormality. Grief lasting longer than expected is often equated to Major Depressive Episodes, given symptomatic similarities. Migration, war and the pandemic have played a significant role in how people currently grieve. Evidence showed that in 2021 alone there was a 22% increase in the permanent immigrant population. Moreover, the top five nationalities applying for first time asylum in the EU (2022) were: Syrian, Afghan, Venezuelan, Turkish, Columbian, and as of September 2022, 5 million Ukrainian refugees were registered. These figures are not neglectable and show the multiculturality of todays EU population. However, the development of transcultural psychometric tools accessing grief has not been uniform, lacking consistency in validating various transcultural factors. On the other hand, actively diagnosing "Prolonged Grief Disorder" has shown helpful to clinicians in recognizing the debilitating effects of some pernicious grief responses and quickly providing the necessary help. Conclusions Diagnosing "PGD" might lead to "psychiatrization" and "medicalization" of normative emotional processes, given different cultural backgrounds, especially due to the absence of universally applicable tools validating transcultural factors. Consequently, an inadequate consideration of context leaves patients feeling invalidated, non-supported and disenfranchised. Abstract:This article addresses the question, “How has media growth and influence impacted the way we grieve in the United States?” The media has grown dramatically in recent years in variety, speed and intensity of information. Thus, the media’s coverage of both real and fictional death and trauma has increased the incidence of vicarious grieving and vicarious traumatization by the viewing public. Accessing the human innate capacity to empathize, the media invites us to share in the sorrow of others and to bind together in times of collective tragedy. At the same time, the intensity and scope of the public’s exposure to unnatural death might be creating a generation that is actually less sensitive to the needs of others.

Abstract:OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying, Ahead of Print. Every society adheres to grieving rules that govern how people experience loss and grief. These are rarely communicated explicitly, which can lead to insecurities in dealing with one's own grief and the grief of others. This is particularly true for adolescents. Based on Doka's concept of disenfranchised grief, this study explores the grieving rules of mid-adolescents. Cross-sectional data collection took place in November and December 2022 at six secondary schools in Germany. A total of 226 adolescents predominantly aged between 14 and 16 years completed the questionnaire. The analysis of the data shows that in some respects, mid-adolescents have similar grieving rules as adults. However, they are more inclusive when it comes to losses of ex-partners, pets and people with intellectual disabilities. Possible sources of (self-)disenfranchisement are parasocial relationships and the duration of grief. Open communication about grieving rules is suggested to prevent possible disenfranchisement.

Abstract:This article presents findings from an empirical study of sharing practices on a Facebook memorial site and draws attention to the uses of time and space deixis as affective positioning resources . Using Androutsopoulos’s (2014) framework for the empirical analysis of sharing online, the article examines practices of selecting , styling , and negotiating in significant moments of mourning online , focusing on the entextualizations of a female user shared over the course of a six-month period. The analysis shows how sharers mobilize discursive resources to construct their multifaceted identities as mourners in the local context of the memorial site as well as in the wider situational context of public mourning online. In addition, findings indicate how sharers use time and space deixis to construe spatiotemporal framings and position themselves interactionally and affectively to the dead, the networked mourners, and their digitally entextualized mutable self. It is argued that shifts from static to dynamic construals of time (‘tonight’ vs. ‘everynight’) and space (‘up there’ vs ‘everywhere’) are linked to shifts from positions of relative disempowerment to positions of empowerment and agency for the sharer in the context of public mourning. Abstract:The Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) proposes that there is an adaptive oscillation between loss-oriented (LO) and restorative-oriented (RO) coping processes. Empirical data supports these processes, but the oscillation process is not well-understood. This study explored the correspondence between the DPM and lived experience of bereaved people, with an additional investigation of perceived changes in grief over time. Using a cooperative inquiry inspired participatory research design, nine bereaved adults and three researchers met nine times to discuss experiences of grief. Knowledge production took place through ongoing sharing, exploration, and reflection upon personal experiences and grief theory. Support was found for the LO and RO processes, but they were perceived to overlap. Support was also found for the oscillation process, which was found to hold learning properties. Time off from grief was not supported. Perspectives on how and why grief experiences change over time emerged, emphasizing the importance of acceptance, learning, time, and contextual factors.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper was to study bereaved parents' use of a closed peer grief support community on Facebook and the features of the community that are important to them. The death of a child is an uncomfortable subject in most contemporary societies. This limits the exploration of experiences and possibilities for coping with grief. However, with the introduction of social media, this has changed. Theoretical perspectives on parental grief recognizing the importance of continued relational bonds with the lost child are used, together with the ontological assumption that social media enhance the dissolving of private/public and time/space. This study is based on questionnaire, interviews, and content from the closed peer grief support community, to which the research team has insider access. The community encompasses a diverse range of experiences and stages of grief, independent of the time elapsed since the loss of a child. Bereavement of children of all ages and from all conceivable causes of death is distributed among the members. The results show how the affordances of social media become vital resources for coping with grief in ways not available previously, comprising aspects of the closed nature of the group, shared experiences, time, and accessibility.

Abstract:This article presents findings from an empirical study of sharing practices on a Facebook memorial site and draws attention to the uses of time and space deixis as affective positioning resources. Using Androutsopoulos’s (2014) framework for the empirical analysis of sharing online, the article examines practices of selecting, styling, and negotiating in significant moments of mourning online, focusing on the entextualizations of a female user shared over the course of a six-month period. The analysis shows how sharers mobilize discursive resources to construct their multifaceted identities as mourners in the local context of the memorial site as well as in the wider situational context of public mourning online. In addition, findings indicate how sharers use time and space deixis to construe spatiotemporal framings and position themselves interactionally and affectively to the dead, the networked mourners, and their digitally entextualized mutable self. It is argued that shifts from static to dynamic construals of time (‘tonight’ vs. ‘everynight’) and space (‘up there’ vs ‘everywhere’) are linked to shifts from positions of relative disempowerment to positions of empowerment and agency for the sharer in the context of public mourning. The article offers insights relevant to the study of public mourning in relation to digital performances of self and it contributes to the empirical study of time and space deixis and discourse and participation online.

Abstract:In contrast to normative views on grief, phenomenological descriptions of grief aim to provide a comprehensive picture of the lived experience, providing space for both uniqueness and universality. However, it is unclear how application of phenomenological descriptions contributes to bereavement care. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical applicability of phenomenological descriptions of grief through autoethnographic exploration. The lived experience of the first author's grief following the death of his husband illustrates two strands of time that increasingly desynchronize: the alienated reality of everyday life and the lingering presence-in-absence of the deceased. Processing grief involved a fundamental reorganization of his identity through representation of and identification with the deceased. Clinical applications of phenomenological descriptions include diagnosing existential manifestations of Prolonged Grief Disorder, cultural aspects, and psychoeducation for the bereaved and for those close to them.
