Abstract:Este trabajo se centra en el lamento de Pleberio con el objetivo de examinar cómo el dolor de este personaje, tal y como lo articula Rojas, inicia una narrativa personal que surge de una aparente paradoja: la fallecida es el catalizador de este lamento y, a pesar de ello, es desplazada en beneficio de su padre que se convierte en el protagonista de su propia expresión de dolor por la pérdida de su hija. Desde esta perspectiva, el lamento de Pleberio es una narrativa en la que este padre profundiza en su propia experiencia como víctima de la muerte de Melibea en vez de centrarse en la memoria de su hija, lo cual refleja el cambio de una actitud colectiva hacia la muerte a otra mucho más individual e introspectiva. Así mismo, esta expresión de dolor paterno nos ayuda a entender cómo Rojas propone un modelo de luto que no sólo cuestiona las manifestaciones genéricas del lamento sino que además revela un giro conceptual: el dolor medieval se transforma en sufrimiento pre-moderno a través de la reestructuración de la relación tradicional entre el dolor por la muerte de un ser querido, la soledad y el lenguaje.

Abstract:Professor Marjorie Perloff was a distinguished scholar, poetry critic, and theorist. Her profound insights and unique perspectives on modern and contempo-rary American poetry have earned her high recognition in the international academic community. She was not only an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University and the University of Southern California but also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Philosophical Society. Her research spanned multiple fields, with outstanding achievements particularly in avant-garde poetry and modernist and postmodernist theory. Her works, including The Poetics of Indeterminacy: Rimbaud to Cage, Radical Artifice: Writing Poetry in the Age of Me-dia, Infrathin: An Experiment in Micropoetics, have not only provided new perspec-tives for understanding modern poetry but also advanced the development of poetry theory, establishing leading theories such as the poetics of indeterminacy and micro-poetics. Professor Perloff also served as the long-term president of China-American Association for Poetry and Poetics, actively promoting cultural exchange between China and the United States and fostering deep cooperation in the field of poetry research. Though Professor Perloff passed away, she has left behind us a valuable academic legacy. We will always keep her in our hearts.

Abstract:En Don Quixote, las preparaciones para la muerte del protagonista son varias, y Cervantes muestra familiaridad con los ars moriendi, los testamentos y los inventarios. Cervantes refleja la tensión entre la resignación recomendada por los humanistas y la ansiedad revelada por las prácticas testamentales. Al final, Alonso Quijano el Bueno confiesa y dicta un testamento conforme a los ars moriendi. Sin embargo, el inventario de bienes en la primera parte es menos virtuoso. El cura y el barbero catalogan y destruyen la biblioteca antes de que el protagonista pueda hacer su testamento, robándole la oportunidad de resignar a sus bienes.

Abstract:Epitaph and poetry are two different literary genres in ancient China. However, when they collectively address the theme of “mourning the deceased”, they demonstrate an evident phenomenon of permeation and interaction. Pan Yue, as the pioneer of mourning poetry, his personal expressions as well as the scenes and objects in his mourning poems have become fixed imageries of mourning, which have been applied to the epitaphs written by later literati for their deceased wives, enhancing the mourning attributes of these inscriptions. Some renowned poets such as Wei Yingwu 韦应物 (737–791) from the Tang 唐 Dynasty (618–907), and Li Mengyang 李梦阳 (1473–1530), from the Ming 明 Dynasty (1368–1644) would personally write tomb inscriptions while creating mourning poems for their deceased wives. Reading these two kinds of texts from the same author side by side not only deepens our understanding of both types of text, but also helps to examine the intertextual interactions between these two literary forms.

Abstract:The point of departure for this article is the small wooden chest that the Countess of Empúries, Maria Álvarez de Xèrica (c. 1310-1374), commissioned to hold the instructions for the annual commemorations of her death. I address the wills, tomb, death, funeral rites, and anniversary celebrations of the countess as a grand performance, a work deployed over space and time. In addition, I focus on the agency of the memory containers: chests, tomb, boxes. The aim of this exploration of the acts, desires, objects, and people that made up this performance is to understand them not only in and of themselves, but as parts of a network. The study reveals the potential of such a network to construct memory by forging a constellation of nodes of objects but also of family ties, and political and social consciousness.

Abstract:Epitaphs record a person’s death, a life that was. Literary epitaphs of the later fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries provided an opportunity, through the medium of verse and prose fiction, for anticipating death and projecting into the future the afterlife that will be constituted by a person’s posthumous reputation. This paper re-assesses writers’ goals in contriving an epitaph fiction. Far from aiming at monumentally immobilising reputation as an immutable product of their writing, as most critics have argued, they manifest a keener interest in unpicking the processes by which someone’s identity is transmitted; they expose the precariousness and malleability of what is being communicated to posterity. I unpack epitaphic processes of identity construction and their precarities by focusing especially on the plurality of identity narratives that results from competing agencies shaping a person’s afterlife. I then pick up on their questioning of the nature of reputation as an afterlife, how the mode of posthumous being that is envisaged is (or is not) defined in terms of life and death. The paper concludes with a reflection on how late-medieval epitaph fictions may usefully inflect critical thinking on afterlives.

Abstract:The article is a review of the book by D. Davies Death, Ritual, and Belief: The Rhetoric of Funerary Rites (Moscow: NLO, 2022. 480 p.). The author notes the growing interest of society in the phenomenon of death and makes an attempt to systematize the key aspects of this phenomenon: from funeral rites in various cultures to near-death experiences and theories of grief. In the review, the emphasis is placed on two main ideas of the book: how words and rituals influence our dealing with death and how the phenomenon of death affects our identity. The review identifies both the strengths of the book and those aspects that require a further study, such as the impact of technology on society’s perception of death (contemporary interdisciplinary studies called ‘digital death studies’).

Abstract:<span>During the first decades of the nineteenth century, the busy north-western Spanish commercial port of Corunna became the stage for a series of memorialization strategies focusing on an exceptional group of military heroes who died in the area or whose mortal remains were buried there. In a city notable for being a bastion of Liberal political ideas, actions taken to preserve the collective memory of military figures—such as the Scottish general John Moore, an ally of the Spanish during the Peninsular War, or Spanish officers such as Porlier, Acevedo, and Espoz y Mina, who were responsible for various uprisings against King Ferdinand VII—necessarily led to the construction of provisional or permanent tombs to house their mortal remains. Considered martyrs and heroes fallen in defense of liberty, the political glorification of these figures tied in with the romantic sensibility to produce a varied set of funerary memorials and, above all, the creation of sites of memory that made this maritime city a forerunner to the national pantheon coveted by Spanish <i>liberales</i> as a means of legitimizing their political ideals.</span>
THE POETICS OF ANCIENT GREEK MEMORY AND THE HISTORICAL IMPERATIVE

Abstract:This book examines Greek engagements with the past as articulations of memory formulated against the contingency of chance associated with temporality. Based on a phenomenological understanding of temporality, it identifies four memorializing strategies: continuity (tradition), regularity (exemplarity), development, and acceptance of chance. This framework serves in pursuing a twofold aim: to reconstruct the literary field of memory in fifth-century bce Greece; and to interpret Greek historiography as a memorializing mode. The key contention advanced by this approach is that acts of memory entailed an “idea of history” that was articulated not only in historiography, but also in epinician poetry, elegy, tragedy, and oratory. The book offers a rich account of poetic conventions and contexts through which each of these genres counterbalanced contingency through the use of exemplary and traditional modes of memory. This fine analysis highlights the grip of the present on the past as a significant feature of both historiographical and nonhistoriographical genres. The essay argues that this work fills a disciplinary gap by extending the reflection on memory to a new period, Greek antiquity. The retrospective positioning of this period at the outset of Western historical thought brings Grethlein's investigation to the center of debates about memory, temporality, and the meaning history. In engaging with the book's argument, the essay suggests that historiographical memory emerged in Greece not as a first-order encounter with time, but as a second-order encounter with forgetting. This confrontation marked a certain separation of historiography from other memorializing genres. Whereas poetic and rhetorical memories were posited against contingency, historiography sought to retrieve those aspects of the past that may otherwise have been irretrievably lost and forgotten. In doing so, it formulated the historiographical imperative as a negation of forgetting that problematized the truth-value of memory and the very act of remembering the past.
