Facing the unthinkable: Life-threatening illness in the analyst and its impact on the analytic couple*

Abstract:This article explores the impact of the analyst's life-threatening illness on the analytic couple; it is informed through two theoretical lenses – Freud's ideas about the vicissitudes of mourning, which have been elaborated on by Melanie Klein and John Steiner, and Christopher Bollas's ideas about destiny and idiom. Clinical material will focus on my on-going work with a middle-aged man who has a history of early abandonment and loss and who struggles with being able to remain separate from his objects while being in relationship with them. L'auteur de cet article explore l'impact sur le couple analytique d'une maladie mettant en jeu le pronostic vital, sous l'éclairage de deux objectifs théoriques – les idées de Freud sur les vicissitudes du deuil, élaborées ensuite par Melanie Klein et John Steiner ; et les idées de Christopher Bollas sur le destin et l'idiome. A l'aide de matériel clinique, il centre son attention sur son travail en cours avec un patient d'âge mûr, dont l'histoire a été marquée par un abandon et un deuil précoces, et qui lutte pour demeurer séparé de ses objets tout en maintenant une relation avec eux. Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit den Auswirkungen einer lebensbedrohlichen Erkrankung des Analytikers auf das analytische Paar. Er ist durch zwei theoretische Linsen geprägt - durch Freuds Ideen über den Wandel der Trauer, die von Melanie Klein und John Steiner weiterentwickelt wurden, und durch Christopher Bollas' Ideen über Schicksal und Idiomatik. Das klinische Material wird sich auf meine laufende Arbeit mit einem Mann mittleren Alters konzentrieren, der eine Geschichte von frühem Verlassenwerden und Verlust hat und der damit kämpft, von seinen Objekten getrennt zu bleiben, während er mit ihnen in Beziehung steht. Il presente articolo esplora l'impatto che le malattie gravi e potenzialmente mortali dell'analista hanno sulla coppia analitica. Le due lenti teoriche qui utilizzate sono da un lato le idee di Freud - successivamente elaborate da Melanie Klein e John Steiner - sulle vicissitudini del lutto, e dall'altro quelle di Christopher Bollas sul destino e sull'idioma. Il materiale clinico si concentrerà sul mio lavoro tuttora in corso con un uomo di mezza età che, proveniente da una storia di abbandoni e perdite precoci, ha molta difficoltà a rimanere separato dai suoi oggetti restando al tempo stesso in relazione con essi. El artículo explora el impacto de la enfermedad potencialmente mortal del analista en la pareja analítica, a partir de dos perspectivas teóricas: las ideas de Freud sobre las vicisitudes del duelo, desarrolladas luego por Melanie Klein y John Steiner, y las ideas de Christopher Bollas sobre destino e idiom . El material clínico se centra en el trabajo de la autora con un hombre de mediana edad con una historia de abandono y pérdida precoces, que lucha por mantenerse separado de sus objetos a la vez que se relaciona con ellos.
