Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have great potential for separation applications due to their low-friction water permeation combined with unique molecular sieving ability. However, the practical use of deposited GO membranes is limited by the inferior mechanical robustness of the membrane composite structure derived from conventional deposition methods. Here, we report a nanostructured GO membrane that possesses great permeability and mechanical robustness. This composite membrane consists of an ultrathin selective GO nanofilm (as low as 32 nm thick) and a postsynthesized macroporous support layer that exhibits excellent stability in water and under practical permeability testing. By utilizing thin-film lift off (T-FLO) to fabricate membranes with precise optimizations in both selective and support layers, unprecedented water permeability (47 L·m-2·hr-1·bar-1) and high retention (>98% of solutes with hydrated radii larger than 4.9 Å) were obtained.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).

Abstract:Nanoporous graphene has attracted extensive attention as a type of disruptive membrane materials for organic separation. However, the fabrication of an ideal graphene membrane with high permeability and selectivity remains challenging due to the inevitable non-selective defects. Here, a strategy based on synergetic effect of graphene membranes and covalent organic framework (COF) nanounits is developed. Atomically thin nanoporous graphene provides high solvent flux and stability. To prevent the leakage from inevitable non-selective pores in graphene without sacrificing flux, porous COF nanounits are directly anchored at the defective sites. The fabricated membranes exhibit record-high solvent flux of 49.81 L m- 2 h-1 (1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that of state-of-the-art membranes), and relatively low reverse solute flux of 1.69 g m- 2 h-1 in organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) process. The strategy we proposed gives dramatic impetus to the development of OSFO and other membrane separation processes.

Abstract:Strategies for harmonizing an active site and electron transportation of a graphene-based composite membrane are crucial for their application in electrofiltration treatment of organic wastewater. In this study, a heterogeneous MoS2-coated S,N-graphene (SNG) membrane (O-MoS2@SNG) was developed through a facile strategy. The electrochemical performance of O-MoS2@SNG was optimized with 7.3 wt % of MoS2 loading, exhibiting superior electrocatalytic performance (>90%) of bi-sphenol A with a large permeation volume in the online electrofiltration system. Spectroscopic structure characterization and macroscopic experimental results reveal that the Mo-O-C heterointerface was generated to bond the MoS2 nanosheet with the SNG substrate, and it substantially facilitated the electron transfer in MoS2@SNG as compared with the Mo-C interface. Moreover, Mo(VI)-O on the edge of MoS2 in O-MoS2@SNG can serve as the active center by the critical MoIV/MoVI redox couple, which would contribute to the electrochemical activities. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also confirm that the uncoordinated Mo was the active site with optimal building energy for BPA degradation, and the Mo-O-C heterointerface facilitated electron transfer to improve electrochemical degradation.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO)-based laminar membranes are promising candidates for next-generation nanofiltration membranes because of their theoretically frictionless nanochannels. However, nonuniform stacking during the filtration process and the inherent swelling of GO nanosheets generate horizontal and vertical defects, leading to a low selectivity and susceptibility to pore blockage. Herein, both types of defects are simultaneously patching by utilizing tannic acid and FeⅢ. Tannic acid first partially reduced the upper GO framework, and then coordinated with FeⅢ to form a metal-polyphenol network covering horizontal defects. Due to the enhanced steric hindrance, the resulting membrane exhibited a two-fold increase in sulfonamide contaminants exclusion compared to the pristine GO membrane. A non-significant reduction in permeance was observed. In terms of fouling control, shielding defects significantly alleviated the irreversible pore blockage of the membrane. Additionally, the hydrophilic metal-polyphenol network weakened the adhesion force between the membrane and foulants, thereby improving the reversibility of fouling in the cleaning stage. This work opens up a new way to develop GO-based membranes with enhanced separation performance and antifouling ability.

Abstract:A biomolecule-surfactant co-assembly is developed, allowing for the universal modification of G-O, MXene, and MoS2 nanosheets. The resulting membranes feature abundant nitrogen/oxygen groups within confined 2D nanochannels. These groups form a hydrogen bond network with the water molecules and undergo protonation inside the channels in acidic conditions, functioning as proton-hopping sites. The increased binding affinity toward salt cations effectively blocks the cations. Notably, exceptional water stability for 400 h in desalination with a 99% NaCl rejection rate is achieved.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with unique structure have received much attention in providing opportunity for high-performance membranes in separation. However, the rational design of ultrathin graphene membranes with controlled structures remains a big challenge. Here, we report a methodology to synthesize dual metal-coordinated ultrathin nanoporous graphene nanofilms by tailoring well-aligned nanocrystals as building blocks on heteroatom-doped GO nanosheets with tunable architectures. Manipulation of metal nitrate as bifunctional dopants realizes N-doping of graphene oxide and preferential growth of α-Mn2O3 nanocrystals. Generation of Mn-O-C bond during cross-linking greatly strengthens the stability of membranes for long-term steady operation. Meanwhile, because of spatial confinement effects and high binding energy, N-doped reduced GO nanosheets are desirable supports to construct numerous Mn-N-C bonds, thus generating artificial nanopores to significantly increase nanochannels for ultrafast mass transport. Moreover, the size-selective permeability of ultrathin nanoporous GO-based nanofilms can be optimized by managing the types of metal source for target coordination.

Abstract:The robustness of carbon nanomaterials and their potential for ultrahigh permeability has drawn substantial interest for separation processes. However, graphene oxide membranes (GOms) have demonstrated limited viability due to instabilities in their microstructure that lead to failure under cross-flow conditions and applied hydraulic pressure. Here we present a highly stable and ultrapermeable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-nanocrystal-hybridized GOm that is prepared by ice templating and subsequent in situ crystallization of ZIF-8 at the nanosheet edges. The selective growth of ZIF-8 in the microporous defects enlarges the interlayer spacings while also imparting mechanical integrity to the laminate framework, thus producing a stable microstructure capable of maintaining a water permeability of 60 l m−2 h−1 bar−1 (30-fold higher than GOm) for 180 h. Furthermore, the mitigation of microporous defects via ZIF-8 growth increased the permselectivity of methyl blue molecules sixfold. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance was employed to characterize the porous structure of our membranes and confirm the tailored growth of ZIF-8. Our technique for tuning the membrane microstructure opens opportunities for developing next-generation nanofiltration membranes.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes hold significant promise for the water purification. However, they also face the problem of structural swelling, which limits their use in water treatment applications. In this work, a novel dual-modulated core-shell metal-organic framework@Chitosan (MOF@CS) was successfully synthesized and used as an intercalation cross-linker to optimize the interlayer spacing and stability of GO membranes. Molecular dynamics simulation confirms that MOF@CS, acting as an intercalator, accelerates the water diffusion rate within the channels of the GO layer compared to a pure GO layer. At the same time, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis reveals that MOF@CS serves as a cross-linker for covalently cross-linking the GO layer. The nanofiltration performance and stability of the improved MOF@CS-GO composite membranes were significantly enhanced. Compared to the pure GO membranes, the MOF@CS-GO composite membranes exhibited enhanced Congo red rejection rates (from 76.5% to 95.6%) while maintaining a high pure water flux (34.5 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1) and good structural stability (stable dye removal performance over 120 h). This dual regulation strategy is expected to effectively solve the swelling problem of GO membranes in aqueous media and open up avenues for advancing their performance.

Abstract:Graphene oxide(GO) membrane has the potential to become the next generation of water purification membrane, which could help to ease water crisis in many counties. However, organic membrane fouling is still difficult to avoid. In this study, we used a trace of center dot OH to mitigate fouling by tuning surface functional groups of GO membrane and altering fouling layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that center dot OH changed the epoxide-dominated GO surface to a hydroxyl-dominated surface. The adhesion force between the GO membrane and organic microspheres decreased from 0.37 +/- 0.16 mN/m to 0.08 +/- 0.14 mN/m after functionalization by center dot OH. Quantum mechanical simulations showed that the interaction energy of the hydroxyl-dominated GO surface with a modified alginic acid monomer was 4.07 eV, which was lower than that (5.68 eV) between the epoxide-dominated GO surface and the modified alginic acid monomer. A thicker water molecule layer formed on the hydroxyl-dominated GO surface than on the epoxide-dominated GO surface through hydrogen bonding, thus repelling organic foulants. Combined with the oxidative effect of center dot OH, the current method achieved the nearly complete prevention of membrane fouling. This result could provide us a new perspective for the fouling-free membrane-based water purification process.
