Abstract:The ability to sieve ions through nanopores with high throughput has significant importance in seawater desalination and other separation applications. In this study, a plasma etching process has been demonstrated to be an efficient way to produce high-density nanopores on graphene membranes with tunable size in the sub-nanometer range. Besides the pore size, the nanopore density is also controllable through adjusting the exposure time of the sample to argon or oxygen plasma. The plasma-treated graphene membranes can selectively transport protons, Na+ and Cl- ions. Density function theory calculations uncover that the sp3 and vacancy-type defects construct different energy barriers for different ions, which allow the defected graphene membrane to selectively transport ions. Our study indicates that oxygen plasma etching can be used as a very convenient and efficient method for fabricating a monolayer filtration graphene membrane with tunable sub-nanometer pores.

Abstract:Precise control of interlayer spacing and functionality is crucial in two-dimensional material based membrane separation technology. Here we show anion intercalation in protonated graphite phase carbon nitride (GCN) that tunes the interlayer spacing and functions of GCN-based membranes for selective permeation in aqueous/organic solutions. Sulfate anion intercalation leads to a crystalline and amphipathic membrane with an accessible interlayer spacing at ~10.8 Å, which allows high solvent permeability and sieves out the solutes with sizes larger than the spacing. We further extend the concept and illustrate the example of GCN-based chiral membrane via incorporating (1R)-(-)-10-camphorsulfonic anion into protonated GCN layers. The membrane exhibits a molecular weight cutoff around 150 among various enantiomers and highly enantioselective permeation towards limonene racemate with an enantiomeric excess value of 89%. This work paves a feasible way to achieve water purification and chiral separation technologies using decorated laminated membranes.

Abstract:Laminar graphene oxide (GO) membranes have demonstrated great potential as next-generation water-treatment membranes because of their outstanding performance and physicochemical properties. However, solute rejection and stability deterioration in aqueous solutions, which are caused by enlarged nanochannels due to hydration and swelling, are regarded as serious issues in the use of GO membranes. In this study, we attempt to use the crosslinking of divalent cations to improve resistance against swelling in partially reduced GO membranes. The partially reduced GO membranes intercalated by divalent cations (i.e., Mg2+) exhibited improved dye-rejection efficiencies of up to 98.40%, 98.88%, and 86.41% for methyl orange, methylene blue, and rhodamine B, respectively. In addition, it was confirmed that divalent cation crosslinking and partial reduction could strengthen mechanical stability during testing under harsh aqueous conditions (i.e., strong sonication).

Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes with fast water permeability and good separation efficiency along with acceptable stability are an urgent need for various applications. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is functionalised with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using different ratios (0.01, 0.02, and 0.03). The Ag NPs have been prepared from orange peel extractive by a green chemical method. The GO/Ag NPs functionalised membranes (ratio 0.03) with thickness ~385 ± 10 nm exhibit an excellent selectivity for various dye molecules with good water permeance, i.e. methylene blue (99 ± 1% rejection and permeability ~287 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1), crystal violet (rejection 99 ± 1% and permeability 862 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1), safranin O (rejection 99 ± 1% and permeability 625 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1) etc. Further, the GO/Ag NPs functionalised membrane (Thickness ~385 ± 10) has been used for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), and the membrane exhibits high separation efficiency up to ~97% for several dye molecules in methanol solvent along with good permeance (530 ± 20 L.m−2.h−1.bar1). Besides this, these membranes are stable under different conditions for up to ~70 days. We hope that the good separation efficiency and high permeance of GO/Ag NPs composite membranes can be utilised in various wastewater treatment, desalination, and organic solvent nanofiltration applications.
Metal-Organic Framework Channelled Graphene Composite Membranes for H-2/Co2 Separation

Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).

A Novel Strategy to Fabricate Cation-Cross-linked Graphene Oxide Membrane with High Aqueous Stability and High Separation Performance

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have shown enormous promise in desalination and molecular/ionic sieving. However, the instability of GO membranes in aqueous solutions seriously hinders their practical applications. Herein, we report a novel and simple strategy to fabricate stable GO membranes in water-based environments through the insertion of various metal cations from metal foils (e.g., copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) foils) and natural deposition. Based on the cation-π, coordination, and electrostatic interaction between metal cations and GO nanosheets, the aqueous stability and mechanical strength of the membranes are significantly improved. The permeation rates for acetone, toluene, and p-xylene molecules across the GO membrane cross-linked by copper ions with a deposition time of 24 h are 0.966, 0.074, and 0.100 mol m–2 h–1, respectively. Moreover, this membrane displays excellent separation performance, and the separation factor of K+/Mg2+ is up to 68.8 in mono-/multivalent metal cation sieving, which indicate the effective molecular/ionic sieving performance. Meanwhile, the ionic sieving of the GO membrane cross-linked by copper ions has excellent repeatability and long-term stability. The versatility of this natural deposition strategy to fabricate GO membranes cross-linked by metal cations is investigated by using Fe foil, Zn foil, and Ni foil as well as other porous substrates such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyethersulfone (PES), and nylon membranes and filter paper. This fabrication strategy also enables low-cost preparation of large-area GO membranes. Abstract:Adaptive membranes that can intelligently control their permeability or selectivity depending on the surrounding environments are of extraordinary importance in the separation technology area. Herein, we report the pH responsive membranes through covalently grafting weak Polyelectrolytes (poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(4vinylpyridine) (P4VP)) onto the regular two dimensional (2D) channels stacked by Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Attributed to the reversible shrinking/stretching function of PAA (or P4VP) chains with the variation of external pH, the switchable 2D GO channels are thus established successfully. Correspondingly, the resulting PAA@GO and P4VP@GO 2D membranes show promising nano-gating ratios of ~ 5 accompanied by satisfactory water permeances. Furthermore, the pH responsive 2D channels render these two types of membranes with the adaptive ability of rejecting different sized species according to separation requirements. For disposing industrial alkaline (or acid) effluents, PAA@GO (or P4VP@GO) membranes exhibit outstanding alkaline (or acid) recovery performance as well.

Abstract:In order to solve the poor structural stability of graphene oxide (GO) membrane, a facile and effective cross-linking technology was employed to create a high-performance GO membrane. Herein, DL-Tyrosine/amidinothiourea and (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane were used to crosslink GO nanosheets and porous alumina substrate, respectively. The group evolution of GO with different cross-linking agents was detected via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Ultrasonic treatment and soaking experiment were conducted to explore the structural stability of the different membranes. The GO membrane cross-linked with amidinothiourea exhibits exceptional structural stability. Meanwhile, the membrane has superior separation performance, with the pure water flux reaching approximately 109.6 l·m-2·h-1·bar-1. During the treatment of 0.1 g l-1NaCl solution, its permeation flux and rejection for NaCl are about 86.8 l·m-2·h-1·bar-1and 50.8%, respectively. The long-term filtration experiment also demonstrates that the membrane exhibits great operational stability. All these indicate the cross-linking graphene oxide membrane has promising potential applications in water treatment.

Abstract:Highly selective macromembranes, fabricated by cation-decorated graphene oxide, exhibit an excellent selectivity toward a wide range of solvents. Mixed solvents are successfully separated, based on which a membrane reactor is designed to promote a series of chemical reactions. The cations bonding to the graphene oxide nanosheets are found to be responsible for this selectivity by cation-pi, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes are considered ideal candidates for efficient water treatment due to their unique two-dimensional structure and excellent sieving properties. However, the swelling of graphene oxide in aqueous solutions makes it still challenging for practical application. Inspired by the spider web, in this work, we developed a "network-trapped engineering" strategy to stabilize the interlayer spacings of GO membranes, which are defined as GS-Sr membranes. The sodium alginate (SA) and Sr 2+ were successfully fixed as the "network" and "rivets" in-between the GO nanosheets, respectively. Benefiting from the design of the network structure, the GS-Sr membranes exhibited excellent interlayer spacing stability. Meanwhile, this evenly distributed network structure in the GO laminates can further optimize the stacking of nanosheets, forming more orderly 2D confined nanochannels. As a result, the membranes exhibited superior salt/dye sieving performance, with a separation factor up to 179.13 for Na 2 SO 4 /CR, while still maintaining an outstanding water permeance of 70.14 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Furthermore, the GS-Sr membrane demonstrated stable separation performance in the long-term test, and the mechanical stability has also been enhanced in the mechanical test. Overall, compared with traditional simple cross-linking strategies, this strategy offers a new insight into fine-construction of two-dimensional nanochannels.

Abstract:Ion sieving is significantly important in many fields such as life science, resource utilization, and environmental protection. However, unlike biological ion channels, realizing efficient ion sieving using two-dimensional (2D) membranes with artificial ion channels is severely restrained because of swelling. In this work, we demonstrated that graphene oxide membranes (GOMs) with the interlayer spacings controlled by K+ (K-GOMs) provide a remarkably enhanced ion sieving performance in mono-/multi-valent mixed ion systems, in which ion selectivity is more than 1 order of magnitude than that of untreated GOMs. The highest selectivity of Na+/Fe3+ for K-GOMs reached up to 159.1, which is superior to most of the state-of the art NF or 2D membranes, and the competitive permeation rate of Na+ ions still remained at 0.48 mol m–2 h–1. Additionally, the K-GOMs also showed an outstanding stability in the long-term test. Further, the K-GOMs also presented high selectivity for multi-valent/multi-valent mixed ion systems. Overall, this study gives a full picture of the excellent performance of K-GOMs based on the size effect for ion sieving and exhibits great value in real-world applications such as desalination, water treatment, battery, and even in life science.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been proved to be ion-selective thanks to their oxidized functional groups, which are naturally present on its surface. This ion selectivity, together with good mechanical strength, low cost, and simple synthesis, makes GO a great alternative material to conventional costly polymers for the production of ion-exchange membranes. This work focuses on how to produce GO membranes as ion-exchange membranes with a scalable approach and tunable permselectivity. Their physicochemical properties were subsequently investigated by means of selected characterization techniques. Results showed that GO membranes present good ion selectivity and size exclusion towards monovalent cations, reaching a permselectivity of up to 96%. Interestingly, UV-light irradiation of GO membranes can also be proposed as a green reduction method. GO reduction increases the permselectivity due to both a decrease in the dimension of the nanochannels and a reduction in the swelling degree of the membranes. The addition of binders was also investigated to improve the membranes' mechanical properties. Finally, the ionic resistance of the membranes was measured by impedance spectroscopy, achieving 4.6 Ω cm 2 , orders of magnitude lower than the state-of-the-art graphene oxide-based membranes.

Abstract:Nanostructured graphene-oxide (GO) laminate membranes, exhibiting ultrahigh water flux, are excellent candidates for next generation nanofiltration and desalination membranes, provided the ionic rejection could be further increased without compromising the water flux. Using microscopic drift-diffusion experiments, we demonstrated the ultrahigh charge selectivity for GO membranes, with more than order of magnitude difference in the permeabilities of cationic and anionic species of equivalent hydration radii. Measuring diffusion of a wide range of ions of different size and charge, we were able to clearly disentangle different physical mechanisms contributing to the ionic sieving in GO membranes: electrostatic repulsion between ions and charged chemical groups; and the compression of the ionic hydration shell within the membrane's nanochannels, following the activated behavior. The charge-selectivity allows us to rationally design membranes with increased ionic rejection and opens up the field of ion exchange and electrodialysis to the GO membranes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO)-based lamellar membranes have been widely developed for desalination, water purification, gas separation, and pervaporation. However, membranes with a well-organized multilayer structure and controlled pore size remain a challenge. Herein, an easy and efficient method is used to fabricate MoO2@GO and WO3@GO nanocomposite membranes with controlled structure and interlayer spacing. Such membranes show good separation for salt and heavy metal ions due to the intensive stacking interaction and electrostatic attraction. The as-prepared composite membranes showed high rejection rates (˃70%) toward small metal ions such as sodium (Na+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions. In addition, both membranes also showed high rejection rates ˃99% for nickel (Ni2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions with good water permeability of 275 ± 10 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. We believe that our fabricated membranes will have a bright future in next generation desalination and water purification membranes.
