Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes used for gas separation have attracted considerable attention recently. Although there are studies focusing on their continuous growth on inorganic substrates, MOF–polymer membranes are in demand because of their low cost, high processing ability and large membrane area. To achieve this purpose, the flexibility of the polymer must be reduced and the MOF-to-substrate adhesion strength should be greatly enhanced. Herein, a continuous and well inter-grown Cu3(BTC)2–PAN composite membrane has been successfully fabricated by directly growing via a covalent linker. Dehydrogenation, cyclization and crosslinking reactions of the PAN hollow fiber by solvothermal treatment can greatly improve the stiffness and compression strength of the composite membrane. To increase the adhesion strength effectively, a covalent linker between the MOF layer and PAN substrate is provided by chemical modification. The prepared membrane achieves a high H2 permeance of 7.05 × 10−5 mol (m−2 s−1 Pa−1) and a good separation factor of 7.14 for binary H2–CO2 mixtures with high thermal and pressure stability. Our strategy has also been developed for preparing a continuous and well inter-grown ZIF-8–PAN membrane. A very thin ZIF-8 layer is finally synthesized due to the large number of nucleation sites on the substrate. All of these distinguished properties suggest that MOF–PAN composite membranes fabricated by chemical modification are promising candidates for gas separation.
Flexible Soft-Solid Metal-Organic Framework Composite Membranes for H2 /CO2 Separation

Abstract:The development of a facile strategy to construct defect-free and flexible metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes with high selectivity and good scalability holds great appeal. Here we report the fabrication of soft-solid MOF composite membranes on polyvinylidene fluoride substrates. A representative membrane comprised of quasi-vertically grown lamellar Zn2 (Bim)4 (Bim=benzimidazolate) and lateral ultrathin polyamide film adhering to the MOF side facets. The straight interlayer galleries within unwrapped Zn2 (Bim)4 acted as predominant pathways, while the polyamide served the function of defect elimination, synergistically inducing an unprecedented H2 /CO2 selectivity of 1084 which set a new record for MOF-based membranes. Separation performance was held constant after membrane rolling up into a tube with a diameter of 3 mm or folding and unfolding at 90° for 50 times. ZIF-67 and ZIF-8 composite membranes based on this strategy also realized extremely high H2 /CO2 separation accuracies. These results, which demonstrate the intrinsic molecular sieving capability of MOFs, will promote the development of MOF-based membranes in practical separation applications.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:In this study, defect-free metal organic framework membrane was first constructed on metal-phenolic networks (MPN) modified hollow fibers by competitive coordination based in-situ solvothermal crystallization. The activated MPN offered massive heterogeneous nucleation sites, facilitating the rapid synthesis of continuous and defect-free MOF membrane. Since different electrostatic environments of MPN may influence the growth rate of ZIF-8 nuclei on MPN, the thickness of MOF layer can be controlled by simply adjusting the preparation process of MPN. The coordination-driven cross-linking rather than tedious oxidative coupling reaction by tannin displayed higher kinetic rate, thereby effectively cut down the operation time of coating procedure to as fast as 10 s. Various techniques such as SEM, FTIR, XPS, XRD and EDS were applied to analyze the structure and morphology of MPN and MOF membranes, and gases separation experiments were applied to investigate the behavior of polymer-based MOF composite membranes. High performance continuous and dense ZIF-8/polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes were successfully synthesized, which exhibited H-2 permeance as large as 3.3 x 10(-7) mol m(-2) s(-1) Pa-1 with very competitive ideal selectivity of 35.1 for H-2/CH4.
Metal-Organic Framework/Pvdf Composite Membranes with High H-2 Permselectivity Synthesized by Ammoniation

Abstract:Herein we report a new ammoniation-based chemical modification strategy for synthesis of continuous and uniform metal-organic framework (MOF)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with attractive performance. Ammoniation can promote the support PVDF membrane to produce amino groups, form a nanoparticle structure, and be well cross-linked; therefore, the high-density heterogeneous nucleation sites for MOFs growth were provided and the thermal stability and chemical resistance of composite membranes can be greatly improved. The high-quality layers of representative Cu-BTC and ZIF-8 were synthesized on the chemically modified PVDF membranes. By ammoniation, ZIF-7 can even be grown under harsh synthetic conditions such as in DMF precursor solutions at 403K. The fabricated MOF/PVDF composite membranes with excellent hollow fiber structures and enhanced structural stability exhibited high H-2 permselectivities for H-2/CO2 and H-2/N-2.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.
ZIF-8/GO sandwich composite membranes through a precursor conversion strategy for H2/CO2 separation

Abstract:It is difficult to control the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of crystals on porous supports, the preparation of thin ZIF-8 membranes is still extremely challenging. Herein, a two-dimensional transformation strategy is demonstrated for constructing a ZIF-8/GO 'sandwich' composite membrane with a thickness of similar to 0.9 mu m, which was prepared from Zn-EG-AC (EG: ethylene glycol, AC: CH3COO-groups, abbreviated as ZnEG) on alumina hollow fiber support for the first time by precursor conversion method in 2-methylimidazole methanol solution. The effects of the amount of precursor, reaction time and membrane thickness on the membrane structure and H-2/CO2 separation performance are explored. The sieving effect of ZIF-8 and the adsorption effect of 2-methyl-imidazole rings on CO2, as well as the strong interaction between GO and CO2 hinder the permeation of CO2 into the membrane, thus exhibiting a good H-2/CO2 ideal separation selectivity of 30.8 with the H-2 permeance of 1.36 x 10(-7) mol.Pa-1.m(-2).s(-1) under the optimized preparation conditions. The separation factor of the equimolar H-2/CO2 binary-mixture gases stabilizes to-25 after 30 h. This precursor conversion strategy is expected to be extended to other MOF/graphene oxide (GO) composite membrane systems.
Graphene-Oxide-Modified Metal–Organic Frameworks Embedded in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Highly Efficient CO2/N2 Separation

Abstract:MOF-74 (metal–organic framework) is utilized as a filler in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve gas selectivity due to its unique one-dimensional hexagonal channels and high-density open metal sites (OMSs), which exhibit a strong affinity for CO2 molecules. Reducing the agglomeration of nanoparticles and improving the compatibility with the matrix can effectively avoid the existence of non-selective voids to improve the gas separation efficiency. We propose a novel, layer-by-layer modification strategy for MOF-74 with graphene oxide. Two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets as a supporting skeleton creatively improve the dispersion uniformity of MOFs in MMMs, enhance their interfacial compatibility, and thus optimize the selective gas permeability. Additionally, they extended the gas diffusion paths, thereby augmenting the dissolution selectivity. Compared with doping with a single component, the use of a GO skeleton to disperse MOF-74 into Pebax®1657 (Polyether Block Amide) achieved a significant improvement in terms of the gas separation effect. The CO2/N2 selectivity of Pebax®1657-MOF-74 (Ni)@GO membrane with a filler concentration of 10 wt% was 76.96, 197.2% higher than the pristine commercial membrane Pebax®1657. Our results highlight an effective way to improve the selective gas separation performance of MMMs by functionalizing the MOF supported by layered GO. As an efficient strategy for developing porous MOF-based gas separation membranes, this method holds particular promise for manufacturing advanced carbon dioxide separation membranes and also concentrates on improving CO2 capture with new membrane technologies, a key step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon capture and storage.

Nanosheets of kgm(t-Bu) of average thickness of 20 nm and aspect ratio of 40 to 50 can be obtained, and the sieving effect of the channels in kgm(t-Bu) boost the efficient separation of CO2 over CH4. A mixed matrix membrane comprising kgm(t-Bu) nanosheets with Matrimid shows a 32% enhancement in CO2/CH4 selectivity compared with the membrane incorporating the MOF in the particulate form.
ZIF-L Membrane with a Membrane-Interlocked-support Composite Architecture for H2/CO2 Separation

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes hold great promise in energy-efficient chemical separations. The outstanding challenges of the microstructural design stem from (1) thinning of membranes to immensely reduce the mass-transfer resistance (for high permeances); (2) tuning of orientation to optimize the selective transport of gas molecules, and (3) reinforcement of intercrystalline structure to subside leakage through defective gaps (for high selectivity). Here, we propose the ZIF-L membrane that is completely confined into the voids of the alumina support through an interfacial assembly process, producing an appealing membrane-interlocked-support (MIS) composite architecture that meets the requirements of the microstructural design of MOF membranes. Consequently, the membranes show average H2 permeances of above 4000 GPU and H2/CO2 separation factor (SF) of above 200, representing record-high separation performances of ZIF-L membranes and falling into the industrial target zone (H2 permeance > 1000 GPU and H2/CO2 SF > 60). Furthermore, the ZIF-L membrane possessing the MIS composite architecture that is established with alumina particles as scaffolds shows mechanical stability, scraped repeatedly by a piece of silicon rubber causing no selectivity loss. Abstract:Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2DMOFs) have emerged as highly appealing candidates as advanced separation membrane materials. However, constructing 2DMOF membranes with appropriate channel sizes to separate CO2 from N2 remains a great challenge. Here, we propose an in-situ crystallization approach to synthesize CO2-philic-polymer functionalized Zr-based MOF nanosheets, enabling the fabrication of efficient CO2 capture membranes. The in-situ MOF crystallization with polyethylenimine (PEI) polymers leads to a uniform distribution of amines, resulting in the formation of PEI-NUS hybrid nanosheet characterized by both high porosity and strong affinity to CO2. These nanosheets are assembled into ultrathin lamellar membranes with thicknesses ranging from 40 to 120 nm. The amines of PEI polymers significantly facilitate the CO2 transfer as reaction carriers, resulting in a substantially improved CO2/N2 separation performance with a CO2 permeance of 410 GPU and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 90, which are among the best for MOF membranes in CO2 separation. This in-situ functionalization strategy paves the way for the fabrication of ultrathin 2D membranes for various separations.

Abstract:Due to increased CO 2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels, considerable efforts have been made in CO 2 capture. The preparation of a membrane with higher mechanical qualities and large CO 2 adsorption capacity, however, remains the main obstacle. Here, using an in-situ anodic electrodeposition approach, we grow HKUST-1 MOFs into the graphene oxide (GO) two-dimensional (2D) nanochannels. A three-stage mechanism for the confined growth of MOFs during electrodeposition has been proposed. Through the inventive layer-by-layer confinement structural growth, composite membranes with hierarchical pore structure were prepared. An extremely high CO 2 adsorption capacity of 194.1 cm 3 /g and CO 2 /N 2 adsorption ideal selectivity of 276.5 were achieved at 273 K and atmospheric pressure because of the synergistic effect of nanoconfined HKUST-1 and GO. The composite membrane prepared by electrodeposition method can expose more metal active sites in the presence of hierarchical porous structures, thus enhancing the CO 2 adsorption capacity. In addition, incorporating the HKUST-1 into GO nanochannels demonstrates 50.6% and 138.13% improvement in hardness and elastic modulus over pristine GO membrane, respectively. This provides a promising method for developing high-performance CO 2 capture membrane system under normal temperature and pressure conditions. It is also generally applicable for growing other composite membranes, such as and Cu-BDC-NH 2 @GO membranes, respectively, and more suitable for large-scale industrial production.

Abstract:Herein, two self‐standing covalent organic framework (COF) membranes are successfully prepared by using steam‐assisted methods to overcome the difficult processing characteristics of COFs. Due to the abundant mass transfer channels and CO2 adsorption sites, these self‐standing membranes have excellent selectivity and ultra‐high H2 permeance in the separation of H2/CO2. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are proposed as promising candidates for engineering advanced molecular sieving membranes due to their precise pore sizes, modifiable pore environment, and superior stability. However, COFs are insoluble in common solvents and do not melt at high temperatures, which presents a great challenge for the fabrication of COF‐based membranes (COFMs). Herein, for the first time, a new synthetic strategy is reported to prepare continuous and intact self‐standing COFMs, including 2D N‐COF membrane and 3D COF‐300 membrane. Both COFMs show excellent selectivity of H2/CO2 mixed gas (13.8 for N‐COF membrane and 11 for COF‐300 membrane), and especially ultrahigh H2 permeance (4319 GPU for N‐COF membrane and 5160 GPU for COF‐300 membrane), which is superior to those of COFMs reported so far. It should be noted that the overall separation performance of self‐standing COFMs exceeds the Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, a theoretical study based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation is performed to explain the excellent separation of H2/CO2 through COFMs. Thus, this facile preparation method will provide a broad prospect for the development of self‐standing COFMs with highly efficient H2 purification.

In situ electrochemical potential-induced synthesis of metal organic framework membrane on polymer support for H2/CO2 separation

Abstract:Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) membranes act as selective layers have offered unprecedented opportunities for energy-efficient and cost-effective gas separation. Searching for the green and sustainable synthesis method of dense MOF membrane has received huge attention in both academia and industry. In this work, we demonstrate an in situ electrochemical potential-induced synthesis strategy to aqueously fabricate Metal Azolate Framework-4 (MAF-4) membranes on polypropylene (PP) support. The constant potential can induce the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of MAF-4, resulting an ultrathin membrane with the thickness of only 390 nm. This high-quality membrane exhibits a high H2/CO2 separation performance with the H2 permeance as high as 1565.75 GPU and selectivity of 11.6. The deployment of this environment friendly one-step fabrication method under mild reaction conditions, such as low-cost polymer substrate, water instead of organic solvent, room temperature and ambient pressure shows great promise for the scale-up of MOF membranes.

High-Flux Graphene Oxide Membranes Intercalated by Metal-Organic Framework with Highly Selective Separation of Aqueous Organic Solution

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes assembled by single-atom thick GO nanosheets have displayed huge potential application both in gas and liquid separation processes due to its facile and large-scale preparation resulting from various functional groups, such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and epoxide groups. Taking advantage of these characters, GO membranes intercalated by superhydrophilic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as strengthening separation fillers were prepared on modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN) support by a novel pressure-assisted self-assembly (PASA) filtration technique instead of traditional vacuum filtration method for the first time. The synthesized MOF@GO membranes were characterized with several spectroscopic techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared with GO membrane, these MOF@GO membranes combine the unique properties of MOF and GO and thus have significant enhancements of pervaporation (PV) permeation flux and separation factor simultaneously for ethyl acetate/water mixtures (98/2, w/w) through the PV process, which are also superior to the reported other kinds of membranes. Especially, for MOF@GO-0.3 membrane (corresponding MOF loading: 23.08 wt %), the increments are 159% and 244%, respectively, at 303 K, and the permeate water content can reach as high as 99.5 wt % (corresponding separation factor, 9751) with a high permeation flux of 2423 g m-2 h-1. Moreover, the procedures of both the synthesis of MOF and membranes preparation are environmentally friendly that only water was used as solvent. Such a nanosized MOF-intercalating approach may be also extended to other laminated membranes, providing valuable insights in designing and developing of advanced membranes for effective separation of aqueous organic solution through nanostructure manipulation of the nanomaterials.
Tunable nano-wrinked channels of reduced graphene oxide membranes for molecular sieving gas separation

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) lamellar membranes have exhibited excellent performance in gas purification, however there has been far less progress than in the application of watertreatment. Actually, exposure of the underlying graphitic framework of GO basically determines the gas permeableness of the GO lamellar membranes, which is usually neglected in the fabrication of GO lamellar membranes. Herein, we report nano-wrinkled lamellar reduced GO (rGO) sheets as gas separation membranes with oxygen-rich domains as face-to-face spacer for CO 2 blockage and oxygen-poor domains for fast H 2 permeation. Thanks to the excellent size-sieving mechanism of the nano-wrinkled channels, the rGO membranes exhibit high H 2 permeance of 6.12 × 10 −7 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ·pa −1 with exceptional selectivity of 529.9 for H 2 /CO 2 gas mixture, surpassing the state-of-the-art ones. The membranes also show excellent stability in separation performance for H 2 /CO 2 gas mixture under a long-term operation. Therefore, such lamellar membranes with well-tuned reduced GO nanosheets hold great potential in gas separation applications.
