Abstract:A new type of intelligent hot-wire/film anemometer was developed by analyzing the shortcomings of traditional hot-wire/film anemometer.The author established a more precise dynamic equation of constant-temperature hot-wire/film anemometer with main bridge prephasing circuit and gave its analytic solution and a set of formulae for design.Three adjustment parameters are reduced,thus the adjusting procedure is greatly simplified.The new type of anemometer can work more stably for its synchronous bias circuit than the traditional anemometer.And it also has other advantages.

Abstract:In the present paper, a compact low-noise constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer (CTA) was developed to improve the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio in hot-wire measurements. The CTA circuit was small enough to be attached to the support stem directly, which minimized the reactance of the sensor cable, maximized the electromagnetic shielding effect and simplified the circuit's transfer function. White noise as well as a square wave were used to examine the dynamic responses of the CTA in detail. Three parameters in the transfer function were successfully determined by the square-wave test. The transfer function with experimentally determined parameters was found to describe the CTA responses quite well over the wide frequency range, from 1 Hz to 250 kHz. It was demonstrated for residual free-stream turbulence in a wind tunnel that the established transfer function allowed the separation of electric noise from the measured data, improving the S/N ratio in the power spectrum of the velocity fluctuations.

Abstract:Here we report a robust thermal anemometer which can be easily built. It was conceived to measure outdoor wind speeds and for airspeed monitoring in wind tunnels and other indoor uses. It works at a constant, low temperature of approximately 90 °C, so that an independent measurement of the air temperature is required to give a correct speed reading. Despite the size and high thermal inertia of the probe, the test results show that this anemometer is capable of measuring turbulent fluctuations up to ∼100 Hz in winds of ∼14 m/s, which corresponds to a scale similar to the length of the probe.

Abstract:Software compensation correction for thermal lag of a hot wire in the application of a constant voltage anemometer (CVA) for turbulence measurements in the boundary layer of a supersonic wind tunnel has been demonstrated. The CVA was used with a fixed compensation setting while measuring the in situ thermal lag (time constant) of the hot wire. Using the measured time constant, corrections are applied to the fixed compensation output of the CVA in postprocessing of the data. To demonstrate the flexibility of the approach it was used for two compensation settings at a test point to obtain the same results from both settings. A unique advantage of this approach is shown to be that for a given compensation setting in the CVA the bandwidth of the measurements for the test remains constant for all of the different test conditions and yields higher productivity. The results of the turbulence levels measured with this method agree with earlier research using other anemometers. Spectral plots of the mass flux and temperature and the measured in situ time constant responses under different conditions of the hot wire have been presented.

Abstract:Common thermal anemometers (hot-wire, hot-film, or similar) are based on the thermal equilibrium between the electrical power heating the sensor and the convection of the ambient medium cooling the sensor. The response times of such instruments are often insufficient in rapidly fluctuating flow processes due to the thermal inertia of their sensing elements. By using the instantaneous imbalance between the heating and the cooling power, which leads to a temperature gradient of the sensor, an instantaneous response of the measurement system can be achieved.

Abstract:We report the design and demonstration of nanowire temperature reporters. Metal alloys with tunable melting points were used to create nanowires in nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide using mechanical pressure injection. When exposed to temperature above their melting points, nanowires began to break up into disconnected shorter nanorods due to Rayleigh instability. A wide range of temperature can be probed conveniently by measuring electrical resistance of nanowires.

Abstract:Experiments were performed for the first time using the electronic square-wave voltage-perturbation test to systematically quantify the frequency response of near-wall hot-wire probes subjected in turn to varying magnitudes of convective velocity, different substrate materials and changes in wall-substrate temperature. In addition, quartz-substrate hot-film gauges with various thicknesses of quartz coating were also tested. Results of were compared against the dynamic frequency response previously obtained in parts I and II using a known near-wall fluctuating flow field. Although the observed trends for and were similar, their magnitudes were vastly different, notably for the commercially available hot-film gauges, or which was up to five orders of magnitude greater than . This signifies that there are possibly inherent differences between square-wave voltage-perturbation and velocity-perturbation tests for quantifying the frequency response of a hot-wire/hot-film system. These differences are then analysed in relation to the equation of a CTA unit put forth by Freymuth.

Abstract:This paper presents a programmable constant temperature anemometer (CTA) with a voltage control of the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor's working temperature. The CTA uses a non-bridge regulating circuit, outputting voltage, current and power dissipation signals. Its operation and sensitivity control are tested for NTC temperatures in a 45 to 85°C range, at wind speeds up to 14m/s . The power sensitivity at 25m/s is improved by NTC temperature increase, estimated to be 6.74mW/(m∙s−1) at 85°C . A qualitative analysis of circuit's stability is derived, providing the guidelines for bandwidth optimization. The NTC's resistance is regulated with error of 0.9% for working temperatures over 60°C . The demonstrated programmability of NTC temperature allows for implementation of known temperature compensation and measurement techniques utilizing a single sensor, while permitting continuous sensitivity control. This makes it suitable for measurements with varying ambient conditions.

Abstract:When a pressure wave propagates in a stationary fluid, the fluid flow is accelerated from zero to a certain value. Although hot-wire anemometry is among the most reliable measurement techniques for small-amplitude and high-frequency fluctuations of velocity or mass flow rate (mass flux), few reports on their response to step accelerations from zero velocity exist. In this study, the response of hot-wire anemometry operated in constant temperature mode (HW-CTA) to an accelerated flow with an initial flow velocity, , to , where is the increase in flow velocity due to a pressure wave, was investigated. In the experiments, the opening valves generated a pressure wave in a pipe with a radius of 50 mm. The velocity signals measured by HW-CTA and flush-mounted pressure transducer were compared for several values of and . A non-negligible dead time and increased time constant were found in the signal measured by HW-CTA when compared with those measured by the pressure transducer for , whereas a negligible delay was observed for . is the wire Reynolds number based on and the hot-wire diameter. Finally, it was revealed that the sum of the dead time and time constant corresponded to the flow transitions from natural to forced convection.

Abstract:A thermal-based acoustic vector sensor consisting of three heated wires can detect acoustic particle velocity instead of pressure. This paper proposes an analytical model for calculating the temperature distribution and acoustic-caused temperature perturbation of the sensor with a three-hot-wire configuration. In this model, the nonlinear effect caused by non-uniform thermal conductivity is considered. The nonlinear effects will not only affect the temperature of the three hot wires, but also the frequency response of the sensor. Based on the stationary temperature distribution calculated by the nonlinear model, we correct the heat diffusion coefficient in the acoustic perturbation model. The nonlinear stationary model and the corrected perturbation model are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results. Furthermore, we design a chip to measure the temperature distribution of the three heated wires and compare the sensitivity of the sensor with the corrected model. The experimental results can verify the proposed model. This study provides a theoretical basis for sensor performance optimization.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel five-wire micro-fabricated anemometer with 3D directionality based on calorimetric principle is proposed, which is capable of measuring low speed airflow. This structure is realized by vertically bonding two different dies, which can be fabricated on the same wafer resulting in a simple fabrication process. Experiments on speed lower than 200 mm s−1 are conducted, showing good repeatability and directionality. The speed of airflow is controlled by the volumetric flow rate. The measured velocity sensitivity is 9.4 mV s m−1, with relative direction sensitivity of 37.1 dB. The deviation between the expected and the measured directivity is analyzed by both theories and simulations. A correction procedure is proposed and turns out to be useful to eliminate this deviation. To further explore the potential of our device, we expose it to acoustic plane waves in a standing wave tube, showing consistent planar directivity of figure of eight. The measured velocity sensitivity at 1 kHz and 120 dBC is 4.4 mV s m−1, with relative direction sensitivity of 27.0 dB. By using the correction method proposed above, the maximum angle error is about ±2°, showing its good directionality accuracy.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a novel 3-hot-wire acoustic particle velocity sensor with high sensitivity and low self-noise for the first time. Three parallel wires, covered with platinum film, are suspended on silicon substrate by MEMS process. The middle wire works as a heater and the left and right ones work as both heaters and temperature sensors. Compared with the 1-hot-wire and 2-hot-wire counterparts, this sensor has higher sensitivity and lower self-noise, showing its potential for sound source localisation, acoustic camera and so on. The self-noise of the sensor is about 15 dB/root Hz at 1 kHz and the relative direction sensitivity is as high as 42 dB.
Bi-directional flow sensor with a wide dynamic range for medical applications

Abstract:This paper describes a novel three-wire thermal flow sensor for medical applications. The present innovation for low-frequency measurements involves the use of a pulsed-wire anemometer with a comparatively large wire diameter (12.5 microm and larger) together with a novel signal processing approach. A small wire is heated using a sinusoidal alternating current, and two sensing wires, acting as resistance thermometers, are set parallel to, and at a small distance on either side of, the pulsed wire. The thermal wake of the pulsed wire is convected downstream to one of the two receiving wires which detect its delayed arrival. This arrangement allows the sensing of both the direction and the flow velocity component normal to the three probes. By appropriate signal processing, the present sensor can be operated such that the phase shift between the periodic current that drives the central wire and the detected signal by either the upstream or downstream wire takes into account a combination of convection, diffusion and the finite thermal response time of both the pulsed wire and the receiving wire. Because the time constants increase as the flow velocity decreases, the time lag due to thermal inertia supplements the time lag due to the true time of flight, thus yielding an effective operating range of 0.05 m/s <or= U <or= 25 m/s , which corresponds to a dynamic range of 500:1. This wide velocity range is an order of magnitude larger than that for the traditional time-of-flight pulsed-wire anemometers. An important application of the bi-directional thermal flowmeter is the measurement of human respiration, e.g. for early diagnostics of asthmatic attacks. The main advantage of the present sensor is its low sensitivity to variations in temperature and also to the composition of the flowing gas. Also, a calibration will be not needed for each density and gas used in addition to that for velocity. The resultant design work aimed at developing a sensor that can be mass-produced at low cost.

Abstract:A novel AeroMEMS sensor featuring integrated pressure and wall hot-wire sensor is presented. The sensor consists of a highly sensitive piezoresistive pressure sensor exhibiting a sensitivity of 4.5 µV/(VPa) and a wall hot-wire composed of aluminum (AlSiCu) that is thermally insulated by an air-filled cavity. Thus, the sensor makes combined wall pressure and wall shear stress measurements possible. Integration of sealed through silicon vias enables to electrically contact the sensor chips from the back side. Hence, flow disturbing bond wires on the front side are avoided when chips are mounted flush with the measured surface. High-frequency laminar-turbulent transition measurements are conducted employing a linear sensor array consisting of 24 chips that is integrated in a wing profile and tested in a transonic wind tunnel. Transition showing frequencies up to 9.5 kHz is measured at a Mach number of 0.32. Furthermore, the first harmonic featuring a frequency of 18 kHz is detected with both measurement principles. The sensor’s excellent dynamic properties and its potential of simultaneously measuring wall pressure and wall shear stress makes the device a powerful measurement tool for fluid mechanics.

Abstract:A thermal gas flow measurement is proposed based on heat transfer principle of single platinum resistance.Firstly,the temperature characteristics are studied at different surrounding temperatures and various currents passing through the resistance.Then,the measurement principle and temperature compensation are analyzed under the developed circuit.Finally,The constant temperature algorithm is designed to control the sensor at two different temperature,and the gas flowrate is obtained from the output voltage of the sensor.The research results show that the measurement accuracy is within 1% and the ratio of the dynamic measurement range is close to 100:1.

Abstract:The development of micro-hot-wire anemometry probes for turbulence studies requires mitigating spatial filtering, end-conduction effects and probe intrusivity. Keeping these factors in mind, this work analytically and experimentally investigates the relevance of a micro-hot-wire probe design featuring elongated stubs, inspired by Wollaston-wire probes but fabricated using modern micro-fabrication techniques. The resulting probes are shown to be relatively easy to manufacture and capable of providing satisfactory velocity measurements in a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer at with . Different probes were tested, all featuring a micro-wire length sufficiently small to alleviate spatial filtering of near-wall small-scale turbulent structures. The investigation focuses on assessing end-conduction effects and probe intrusivity, with the latter still observable close to the wall for such micro-probes.

Abstract:Based on the transient hot-wire method and well developed microfabrication techniques, a new thermal sensor, in which the microfabricated gold wire serves as both a heater and a thermometer, has been developed for measuring the thermal conductivities of semi-rigid materials. The intention that only one calibration constant is needed for an entire batch of sensors has been validated. Thermal conductivities of distilled water, ethylene glycol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and apple at different temperatures have been obtained. Measurements are in agreement with suggested values. Complete results will be presented at the conference. The operating temperature of 0 degrees C to 27 degrees C has been tested and is anticipated to be -20 degrees C to 60 degrees C. In spite of conventional advantages, the presented sensor offers new exciting superior performance characteristics, such as reduced thermal resistivity and higher sensitivity, easier manufacturing for mass production, flexibility to reconfigure the sensor for samples with various sizes and shapes, and much reduced workload for system calibration.

Abstract:Obtaining the characteristics of the internal flow field of turbomachinery is of great significance for the design and improvement of engine performance, but the working environment of high temperature and high speed has brought huge challenges for wind speed measurement. Based on the mechanism of glow discharge, a new high-performance plasma anemometer using tungsten wire as needle electrode is designed. The influences of the anemometer’s key parameters on its performances were investigated and the design of the anemometer was optimized. The velocity response of anemometer is improved to 0.8 Ma, which is twice higher than the reported plasma anemometers. The temperature resistance of the sensor can reach to 500 °C, which is five times as much as the best result reported. Moreover, the sensor also has fast response. In addition, a compensation model was proposed to improve the accuracy of the sensor for long-term use. These results demonstrate that the plasma anemometer has the potential for flow field measurement in high-speed and high-temperature turbine environment.

Abstract:We develop a micro-fabricated anemometer with three-dimensional directionality based on thermal Thomas flowmeter principle, which is capable of measuring very low airflow speed. This sensor has three layers of resistive platinum beams. Experiments on speed lower than 200 mm/s are conducted, showing acceptable repeatability and obvious directionality. The speed of airflow is tested with the volumetric flow rate. To further explore its potential, we expose it to acoustic plane waves of frequency range from 200 Hz to 1.38 kHz in a standing wave tube, showing consistent planar directivity of figure of eight. Velocity sensitivity at 1 kHz and 120 dBC measures 4.4 mV·s/m, with relative sensitivity of 27.0 dB.
