Abstract:In this work, core-alloyed shell structured (CAS) Fe@FeCo di-atomic nanoclusters loaded in carbon aerogels (CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NC/C catalysts) were successfully prepared by utilizing the spatial confinement effect of poly-aniline (PANI) hydrogels led by strong chelation among Fe3+ ions, tannic acid (TA), and amino (or imino) groups of PANI polymer chains. The spatial confinement effect can guarantee the formation of CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs with sizes between 1.4 and 2.4 nm. Moreover, N4-Fe-O-Co-N4 units are composed of the alloyed shells of the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs, which can act as bi-functional active sites. In addition, N4-Fe-O-Fe-N4 units are the main component of their cores (like Fe-SA-NCs), which would slightly help strengthen the adsorption ability of bi-functional active sites of the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs to the reactants. The core-alloyed shell structure of the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs are demonstrated by results of X-ray photoelectron spectra, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and control experiments. Thus, the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NC is proposed as a new type of active species with bi-functional active sites for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Thanks to their unique features as active species (proper size, core-alloyed shell structure, and bi-functional active sites), the as-prepared CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NC/C catalysts show excellent performance as bi-functional catalysts in the oxygen reduction re -action (ORR) with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.895 V (Delta E1/2 = 34 mV vs of Pt/C) in alkaline media and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 133 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) in acidic media.
One-Step Synthesis of Nanostructured Cu–Mn/TiO 2 via Flame Spray Pyrolysis: Application to Catalytic Combustion of CO and CH 4

Abstract:Catalytic combustion has been widely applied to remove the trace combustible pollutants. However, the earth-abundant and high-performance nanocatalysts are still the main research focus on promoting catalytic efficiency. Herein, the Cu and Mn mixed oxides supported on TiO2 nanoparticles with various Cu and Mn molar contents synthesized via the flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) technique are utilized in the catalytic oxidation of lean CO and CH4. Initially, the Cu–Mn/TiO2 nanocatalysts are composed of spherical structures with a diameter of about 20 nm, whose specific surface area is between 60 and 90 m2/g. The Cu element is more evenly distributed on the TiO2 surface than the Mn element, owing to the distinctly different ion radii. Both the copper and manganese cations could incorporate into the TiO2 lattice, which generates oxygen vacancies and enhances the diffusion of oxygen ions, causing the transformation of the antanse to rutile phase. When the molar content of the Cu–Mn increases to less than 30 mol %, the temperature of its reduction peak keeps decreasing due to the hydrogen spillover effect. Moreover, the catalytic performances of the Cu–Mn/TiO2 with 12 mol % loading (12CMT) are all optimal during the low-temperature and the high-temperature stages, which are superior to the FSP-made copper manganese or copper titanium oxides. This is attributed to the small crystal particles, highly dispersed active components of CuOx and MnOx, and the higher ratios of Cu1+/Cu and Mn4+–Oads Lewis acid–base pairs. In addition, the strong interaction between Cu–Mn components and rutile phase support can tremendously promote the activity of catalytic combustion. Under the simulated flue gas, the catalytic properties of 12CMT decreases in comparison with those of CO and CH4 mixed gas due to the introduction of CO2. Ultimately, the Cu–Mn/TiO2 samples exhibit the outstanding water resistance, thanks to the hydrophobization of the catalyst surface.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Thermite has become a hot research topic in the field of energetic materials in recent years due to its high combustion efficiency and fast energy release rate. However, during its preparation process, agglomeration between components is prone to occur, which seriously affects its reaction performance. In order to change the contact mode between raw materials and improve the agglomeration phenomenon of nano-thermite components, Al/Fe 2 O 3 was prepared by the sol–gel method and compared with samples prepared by the mechanical ball milling method with characterization and experiments. In an effort to analyze the effects of preparation methods on the morphology characteristics and thermodynamic properties of the samples, the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, and DSC. Meanwhile, combustion tests were used to investigate the combustion characteristics of samples. The results show that compared with mechanical ball milling method, the samples prepared by the sol–gel method are more evenly distributed and the activation energy of the first stage is lower. In addition, the combustion process of the samples prepared by the sol gel method is more uniform and stable, with higher peak combustion pressure and pressurization rate of constant volume combustion. However, due to the incomplete conversion of Fe (NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O during the preparation process, the combustion temperature is lower. The research results could provide valuable references for the modification and formulation design of thermites.

Abstract:In pursuing cheap and effective oxygen reduction catalysts, the Fe/N/C system emerges as a promising candidate. Nevertheless, the structural transformations of starting materials into Fe- and N-doped carbon catalysts remains poorly characterized under pyrolytic conditions. Here, we explore the evolution of Fe species and track the formation of Fe-N4 site development by employing diverse in-situ diagnostic techniques. In-situ heating microscopy reveals the initial formation of FeOx nanoparticles and subsequent internal migration within the carbon matrix, which stops once FeOx is fully reduced. The migration and decomposition of nanoparticles then leads to carbon layer reconstruction. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals size-dependent behavior of FeOx where nanoparticles below 7 nm readily release Fe atoms to form Fe-N4 while nanoparticles with sizes >10 nm tend to coalesce and impede Fe-N4 site formation. The work visualizes the pyrolysis process of Fe/N/C materials, providing theoretical guidance for the rational design of catalysts.

Abstract:Metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) typically use Al as fuel and transition metal oxides as oxidizers, while their reactivities are hindered by the inert Al2O3 passivation layer on the surface of Al particles. Recently, transition metal fluorides have emerged as novel fluorine-containing oxidizers for promoting the reactivity of metal fuels through interfacial fluorination of oxide layer. In this work, nanosized CoF2 and Co3O4 were prepared through pyrolysis of CoF2·4H2O precursor using different calcination conditions. To investigate the function of CoF2 in reaction and the influence of CoF2 content on reactive performances, a series of MICs composed of n-Al, Co3O4, and CoF2 were prepared through ultrasonic dispersion method. Thermal analysis indicated that Al/CoF2 composite had significantly higher specific heat release (2.30 kJ/g) than that of Al/Co3O4 composite (1.45 kJ/g), and CoF2 facilitated the occurrence of exothermic reaction at a relatively lower temperature. AlF3 was found as main reaction products of Al/CoF2 at 650 °C, and AlF3 sublimes at the temperature above 850 °C. Although the pressure output and flame intensity of Al/CoF2 composite is lower than that of Al/Co3O4 composite, hybrid Al/Co3O4/CoF2 composites with 20 %–35 % CoF2 showed significantly enhanced energetic performances compared with sole Al/Co3O4, suggesting that CoF2 can function as an effective reaction modifier.

Abstract:Most nanothermite compositions utilise Al as a fuel, due to its low cost, high reactivity and availability. Nevertheless, aluminothermites exhibit high ignition temperature and low active metal content. In this paper, the combustion behaviour of Ti/CuO and Ti/CuO/NC systems is discussed. The compositions were prepared with a wet-mixing/sonication process followed by an electrospray technique and were examined in terms of their mechanical and radiation sensitivity, energetic parameters and morphology. The results exhibited a strong correlation between equivalence ratio and energetic parameters. The performed tests showed the crucial impact the addiction of the chosen energetic binder on the morphology and performance of the compositions. The results of our experiments indicate the occurrence of a different combustion mechanism than the one observed for Al-based nanothermites. In our case, the combustion mechanism involves a limitation by the diffusion of the oxidising agent and its decomposition products into the reactive fuel core.

Construction of Fe Nanoparticles Interfacial Layer on Micron Al Surface: Boosting the Efficient Energy Release of High-Energy DAP-4 as a Gradient Catalyst

Abstract:The high-energy (H2dabco)[NH4(ClO4)3] (DAP-4) with excellent energetic performance attracts wide attention from researchers. The investigation of its interaction with the Aluminum (Al) is of great importance. However, the higher ignition threshold of DAP-4 and the dense oxide layer (Al2O3) of Al severely limit the energy release efficiency of Al/DAP-4. In this study, a new idea to is first proposed to improve and adjust the thermal decomposition and combustion performance of Al/DAP-4 by constructing a highly dispersed iron (Fe) nanoparticle interfacial layer. It acts as a gradient catalyst to promote the thermal decomposition and combustion of DAP-4 and Al, and it also act as an oxygen transport channel to promote the contact and reaction of oxidizing gases with the internal reactive Al powder. It reduces the thermal decomposition temperature of Al@Fe-3/DAP-4 from 386.30 °C (Al/DAP-4) to 349.48 °C and leads to the vigorous combustion. Theoretical calculations show that Fe nanoparticle interfacial layer can facilitate the transport of oxygen through the established oxygen transport channels, and it can also significantly improve the energetic properties of Al@Fe-3/DAP-4 composites. In conclusion, the new approach is proposed to improve the performance of metal fuel/oxidizer composites by constructing interfacial layers, which is expected to promote their practical applications.

Abstract:Nano‐thermite has become a subject of significant interest in the composite energetic materials field due to its high energy release rate. To cater to diverse engineering needs, thermite formulations are often customized to fulfill specific criteria. This study investigates the potential of metal nickel (Ni) as an additive to modify nano‐thermite formulations, selected for its optimal calorific values and chemical reactivity. The base materials, nano‐aluminum (Al) and iron oxide (Fe2O3), are blended with varying mass ratios of Ni (1 %, 3 %, 5 %, 7 %, 9 %) using the wet ball milling method. Pre‐reaction and post‐reaction morphological and compositional alterations in the resultant thermite samples are scrutinized through SEM and XRD characterization tests. Moreover, DSC analysis and combustion experiments were conducted to examine the pyrolysis and combustion behaviors of the evaluated samples. The results reveal a reduced exothermic peak on the DSC curves with the introduction of Ni, making the liquid‐solid (L‐S) phase reaction more challenging compared to the Al/Fe2O3 thermite. Intriguingly, Ni addition progressively decreases the combustion temperature of thermites as the Ni's mass ratio increases, with a peak efficiency at 7 % in the perforation tests on stainless‐steel plates. This research further reveals that the thermite reaction mechanism is a combined consequence of the "pre‐ignition‐fusion" and "fusion‐diffusion" mechanisms. These insights can provide valuable guidance for designing thermite formulations for potential applications in storage, management, and pyrotechnic cutting areas.

Improved ignition and combustion performances of aluminum nanoparticles by in-situ partial conversion of native alumina to surface Al-MOF shell

Abstract:Although aluminum nanoparticles (n-Al) as the promising metal fuel have attracted much attention, it still remains great challenge to efficiently extract chemical energy from n-Al. The energetic performance of n-Al is limited by native alumina layer, which slows down mass/heat transport, hinders sufficient ignition/combustion. In this study, we report the in-situ partial conversion of native alumina to surface Al-MOF shell (MIL-53(Al)), the resulted n-Al@Al-MOF has been confirmed by TEM, XRD and XPS. The effects of treatment conditions on the thermochemical reactivity, ignition/combustion of n-Al@Al-MOF and comparison samples have been investigated by TGA-DSC-MS, CO 2 laser ignition, and constant volume combustion experiments. Tuning organic linker (terephthalic acid, H 2 BDC) amount and treatment time, the onset temperatures of n-Al@Al-MOF oxidation in air are lowered by about 18.0–38.0 °C than that of pristine n-Al (529.2 °C). Moreover, n-Al@Al-MOF with suitable content of surface Al-MOF shell exhibits remarkably improved ignition and combustion performances in comparison with n-Al, representing a shorter ignition delay time (t ig ), higher peak pressure (P max ) and higher pressurization rate ( e.g. 4 ms, 638.2 kPa, 3088.6 kPa/ms for n-Al@Al-MOF vs. 20 ms, 106.3 kPa, 349.8 kPa/ms for n-Al). Importantly, violent deflagration even occurs for n-Al@Al-MOF modified with appropriate surface Al-MOF shell. However, shortened t ig , enhanced pressurization rate and deflagration behavior have not been observed by physical mixtures of n-Al with MIL-53 (or H 2 BDC). The surface Al-MOF shell should decompose as CO 2 gases to form voids, playing unique roles in facilitating mass/heat transfer and improving ignition/combustion. In addition, n-Al@Al-MOF exhibits a decreased combustion heat but a good stability in air. This work provides a facile, mild and effective route to enhance the ignition and combustion performances of metal fuels.

Abstract:A study of the combustion processes of Ti/CuO and Ti/CuO/NC nanothermites prepared via electrospraying was conducted in this work. For this purpose, the compositions were thermally conditioned at 350, 550 and 750 ∘C, as selected based on our initial differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry (DSC/TG) investigations. The tested compositions were analysed for chemical composition and morphology using SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. Additionally, the thermal behaviour and decomposition kinetics of compositions were explored by means of DSC/TG. The Kissinger and Ozawa methods were applied to the DSC curves to calculate the reaction activation energy. SEM-EDS analyses indicated that sintering accelerated with increasing equivalence ratio and there was a strong effect on the sintering process due to cellulose nitrate (NC) addition. The main combustion reaction was found to start at 420–450 ∘C, as confirmed by XRD and Raman study of samples annealed at 350 ∘C and 550 ∘C. Moreover, increasing the fuel content in the composition led to lower Ea, higher reaction heats and a more violent combustion process. Conversely, the addition of NC had an ambiguous effect on Ea. Finally, a multi-step combustion mechanism was proposed and is to some extent in line with the more general reactive sintering (RS) mechanism. However, unusual mass transfer was observed, i.e. to the fuel core, rather than the opposite, which is typically observed for Al-based nanothermites.

Electronic Metal-Support Interactions in Pt/FeOx Nanospheres for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Catalysts containing heterostructures consisting of composite metal/metal oxides have been proven to be very active for many catalytic reactions. In this work, Pt/FeOx heterostructures, including Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, were synthesized and used for catalytic oxidation of CO. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanospheres were synthesized by hydrothermal methods, and then platinum precursors were in situ reduced on the prepared FeOx in ethylene glycol solutions. The results of the activity test showed that the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres exhibited much higher catalytic activity of CO oxidation than the Pt/Fe2O3 nanospheres over the entire temperature range of 50 degrees C-225 degrees C. Complete CO oxidation could be achieved on the Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts at temperatures above 150 degrees C, while the full CO conversion required a temperature of 225 degrees C on the Pt/Fe2O3 catalysts. Several characterization techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties in light of the activity differences of the prepared catalysts. The combined results of TEM and XRD showed that Pt/Fe3O4 and Pt/Fe2O3 were comprised of Pt nanoparticles with an average crystallite size of 3.7 nm and 3.6 nm, respectively. The Pt nanoparticles could uniformly distribute throughout the FeOx nanosphere supports. According to XPS and H-2-TPR characterizations, surface chemisorbed oxygen was readily formed on the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, and a synergistic interaction might exist between Pt and Fe3O4 nanospheres. The presence of Pt nanoparticles facilitated the activation of surface chemisorbed oxygen, thus mainly contributed to the CO oxidation. In situ DRIFTS results indicated that the oxygen activation was a rate-limiting step in the catalytic oxidation process. Linearly adsorbed CO species on the Pt sites were then oxidized into CO2.

Abstract:Here, a series of Fe/N/C catalysts with different proportions and pyrolysis temperatures are prepared by co-pyrolysis of melamine with a γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CD-MOF) containing iron(ii) phthalocyanine (FePc). Due to the restriction effect of the host and guest at the molecular level, γ-CD-MOF can effectively avoid the π-π stacking of FePc and restrain the agglomeration of Fe atoms during pyrolysis. The phases and structures of the catalysts are characterized, which proves that the obtained catalyst has a three-dimensional porous and internal cavity structure with abundant surface area (1055.317 m2 g-1) and Fe is atomically dispersed in nitrogen-doped carbon. The onset potential (0.988 V vs. RHE) and half-wave potential (0.846 V vs. RHE) of FePc@CD/M (1 : 20)-1000 are superior to those of a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. FePc@CD/M (1 : 20)-1000 also exhibits an approximately four-electron (3.84) transfer process, good stability and excellent methanol tolerance.

Abstract:The combustion agglomeration of nano-aluminum (nAl) powder leads to incomplete combustion, which seriously hinders its application as metal fuel. In this work, nAl@AlF 3 composites were produced by coating nAl with AlF 3 via a facile chemical deposition method. TEM and SEM analyses indicated that the AlF 3 layer was evenly coated on the surface of nAl with a thickness of 4.6–9.1 nm, thereby varying the quantity of AlF 3 applied. Experimental results from combustion indicated that the prepared nAl@AlF 3 composites exhibit superior combustion efficiency, a higher combustion rate, and reduced combustion agglomeration as compared to raw nAl. Contrary to the widely accepted explanation that volatilization of AlF 3 hinders Al combustion agglomeration, we proved that the gas–solid reaction between nAl and AlF 3 plays an important role in inhibiting the sintering of nAl particles produced. The gaseous intermediate ( i.e. , AlOF and HF) released from the hydrolysis of AlF 3 could reduce the diffusion barrier of Al 2 O 3 to facilitate the reaction of Al core, which enhances the combustion reaction kinetics. More importantly, these gaseous products actively participate in the reaction cycle to continuously exert their catalytic effects.

Abstract:Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanorods, nanotubes, and nanocubes were selectively synthesized via a hydrothermal process and subsequent calcination treatment. The nanorods showed higher catalytic activity than the nanotubes and the nanocubes for methane combustion and CO oxidation. It may be attributed to the highest occupancy of iron ions on the surface of the nanorods.

Abstract:Collocation of a suitable catalyst and support is a classic way to tune the activity and stability of catalysts. Herein, we designed a self-sacrificial reagent-directed route to synthesize iron carbide nanoparticles inlaid in a N-doped carbon nanosheet (Fe3C–N–C). With the introduction of the sacrificial reagent, the chemical Fe–N bonds in Fe3C–N–C increases and the size of Fe3C becomes smaller, further leading to uniform dispersion. With the increase of chemical Fe–N bonds, Fe3C–N–C ensures structural stability and prevents surface poisoning and agglomeration. Notably, the Fe3C–N–C catalyst exhibits much higher oxygen reduction reaction activity (E0 = 0.94 V, E1/2 = 0.82 V), longer stability (ΔE = −15 mV), and better methanol tolerance than 20% Pt/C (E0 = 0. 98 V, E1/2 = 0.85 V, ΔE = −27 mV). Fe3C–N–C materials can also be assembled into Li–O2 batteries taking advantage of their large discharge capacity and excellent cycling stability. Abstract:To improve the properties of Zr powder for specific applications in aerospace and military fields, Zr powders were coated with ferrite nanoparticles, namely FeOOH, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. An instantaneous flame propagation system and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry techniques was used to characterized the flame propagation characteristics, micromorphology, phase composition, crystal structure, thermal stability, and reactivity of the three types of nano ferrite-coated Zr particles. The results showed that, the flame propagation velocity and maximal temperature exhibited the following order: Fe2O3-coated > FeOOH-coated > Fe3O4-coated Zr dust cloud. With an increase in the proportion of coating materials, the combustion characteristics all decreased. The contrastive analysis of surface, ingredient and heating process revealed that, during combustion, in addition to inducing oxidation–reduction, inner Zr led to a replacement reaction with the outside ferrite coating layer, and then, Fe generated was oxidized at a high temperature.
A novel nano-thermite system with BiOF as fluorine-containing oxidant for enhanced energy release performance

Abstract:The reduced diffusion distance of nano-thermite results in an exceptionally high energy release rate and intense exothermic reactions upon ignition, which has drawn significant interest from researchers in the field of energetic materials. With the deepening of research, metal fluorides are gradually favored by researchers because of their unique reaction characteristics. This paper presents the synthesis of a new fluorine-containing oxidant, BiOF, and its use in the preparation of a novel nano-thermite with n-Al. BiOF crystals exhibit a unique microscopic morphology and are interlaced into "nanoflower" microspheres, which allows for good interfacial contact between the oxidant and fuel during the recombination process. The resulting n-Al/BiOF system displays excellent ignition and combustion performance, with a combustion temperature higher than the boiling point of its main combustion products, AlF 3 and Bi. Compared with n-Al/CuO and n-Al/MoO 3 systems, n-Al/BiOF exhibits a higher flame propagation rate under confinement. In addition, the ignition threshold of the n-Al/BiOF system is also smaller than that of the n-Al/CuO and n-Al/MoO 3 systems. Furthermore, the paper examines the reaction mechanism of the n-Al/BiOF system through thermal reaction path analysis and combustion and thermal analysis product characterization. The paper discovers a "pre-ignition" reaction mechanism before the ignition temperature, where the strongly electronegative fluorine in BiOF corrodes the Al 2 O 3 shell, promoting the release of aluminum energy. The synergistic and effective interaction between oxygen, fluorine, and fuel aluminum in the n-Al/BiOF system results in efficient energy release performance, making BiOF a promising candidate for n-Al based reactive materials in propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnic products.
