Abstract:This case for the Transformation Tool Contest 2013 is about evaluating the scope and usability of transformation languages and tools for a set of four tasks requiring very different capabilities. One task deals with typical model-to-model transformation problem, there's a model-to-text problem, there are two in-place transformation problems, and finally there's a task dealing with validation of models resulting from the transformations. The tasks build upon each other, but the transformation case project also provides all intermediate models, thus making it possible to skip tasks that are not suited for a particular tool, or for parallelizing the work among members of participating teams.

Abstract:Epsilon is an extensible platform of integrated and task-specific languages for model management. With solutions to the 2011 TTC Hello World case, this paper demonstrates some of the key features of the Epsilon Object Language (an extension and reworking of OCL), which is at the core of Epsilon. In addition, the paper introduces several of the task-specific languages provided by Epsilon including the Epsilon Generation Language (for model-to-text transformation), the Epsilon Validation Language (for model validation) and Epsilon Flock (for model migration).

Abstract:In this short paper we present our solution for the Hello World case study of the Transformation Tool Contest (TTC) 2011 using the QVTR-XSLT tool. The tool supports editing and execution of the graphical notation of QVT Relations language. The case study consists of a set of simple transformation tasks which covers the basic functions required for a transformation language, such as creating, reading/querying, updating and deleting of model elements. We design a transformation for each of the tasks.
Apprentice Tutor Builder: A Platform For Users to Create and Personalize Intelligent Tutors

Abstract:Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are effective for improving students' learning outcomes. However, their development is often complex, time-consuming, and requires specialized programming and tutor design knowledge, thus hindering their widespread application and personalization. We present the Apprentice Tutor Builder (ATB) , a platform that simplifies tutor creation and personalization. Instructors can utilize ATB's drag-and-drop tool to build tutor interfaces. Instructors can then interactively train the tutors' underlying AI agent to produce expert models that can solve problems. Training is achieved via using multiple interaction modalities including demonstrations, feedback, and user labels. We conducted a user study with 14 instructors to evaluate the effectiveness of ATB's design with end users. We found that users enjoyed the flexibility of the interface builder and ease and speed of agent teaching, but often desired additional time-saving features. With these insights, we identified a set of design recommendations for our platform and others that utilize interactive AI agents for tutor creation and customization.

Abstract:Urban migrant children encounter difficulties in developing a sense of belonging, which compromises their living experiences and academic performance. This paper introduces Community Tour, an expandable knowledge exploration system designed to assist migrant children with their extracurricular learning, and empower social workers to systematically carry out community events. A knowledge exploration interaction process has been designed to localize STEAM education with community elements through practical tasks, learning motivation, and achievements. Prototypes of interactive installation and back-end platform have been built and partial validation experiments have been conducted, with future work focusing on collaborating with communities for field testing and design iteration. The sustainability of the system lies in the potential for education on various themes, and its compatibility from urban villages to more regular communities, contributing to the child-friendly cities.

Abstract:Realizing test scenarios through a tutoring system involve questions about architecture and didactic methods in such a system. Observing the fact that traditional tutoring systems normally are domain-static, this paper shows investigations for a generic domain-independent tutoring system for utilizing test scenarios in computer-based and web-based environments. Furthermore, test paradigms are analyzed and it is presented an approach for realizing functionality for applying test paradigms in the presented generic tutoring system architecture by an XML-specified language.

Dynamic Domains, Dynamic Solutions: DPCore for Continual Test-Time Adaptation

Abstract:Continual Test-Time Adaptation (CTTA) seeks to adapt a source pre-trained model to continually changing, unlabeled target domains. Existing TTA methods are typically designed for environments where domain changes occur sequentially and can struggle in more dynamic scenarios, as illustrated in Figure \ref{fig:settings}. Inspired by the principles of online K-Means, we introduce a novel approach to CTTA through visual prompting. We propose a \emph{Dynamic Prompt Coreset} that not only preserves knowledge from previously visited domains but also accommodates learning from new potential domains. This is complemented by a distance-based \emph{Weight Updating Mechanism} that ensures the coreset remains current and relevant. Our approach employs a fixed model architecture alongside the coreset and an innovative updating system to effectively mitigate challenges such as catastrophic forgetting and error accumulation. Extensive testing on four widely-used benchmarks demonstrates that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives in both classification and segmentation CTTA tasks across the structured and dynamic CTTA settings, with $99\%$ fewer trainable parameters.

Teaching computational thinking with a tangible development platform: An exploratory field study at school with Kniwwelino

Abstract:Computational Thinking (CT) is an emerging topic in school curricula. Different tools exist to support the learning of CT, namely visual programming languages and tangible development platforms (TDP), which are widely used in extra-curricular activities. To date, few tools have been developed that consider both teachers' needs and the school context. We designed the Kniwwelino Classroom Kit (KCK) in order to support the teaching of CT in classrooms. This paper presents the results of a pilot study, in which the KCK was used in three primary and three secondary schools in Luxembourg. The KCK is based on Kniwwelino, a creative environment designed for children from 8 years old to learn about programming and electronics. The study explored the suitability of the KCK for teaching CT in primary and secondary schools, focusing on three research questions: (1) how the KCK supports teachers' pedagogical practices, (2) how the KCK fulfils the pedagogical objectives set by teachers, and (3) the user experience of the KCK (for teachers and pupils). To assess how the KCK meets the three above-mentioned objectives, we used a mixed method approach, combining semi-guided interviews, logbooks, and several questionnaires. We learned that the KCK is versatile enough to adapt to different environments, objectives, and pedagogical approaches, which responds to the first two research questions, and thus offers a great deal of freedom to teachers. The fun and tangible approach of the KCK introduces programming and enables pupils to develop both CT and soft skills such as communication and collaboration. Teachers' feedback on their user experience was positive, particularly concerning stimulation, novelty, and attractiveness. KCK was evaluated as interesting, valuable, and good, but it was noted that some improvements needed to be made to make it easier, more predictable, and faster. The pupils also rated their user experience positively, with values that were generally on a par with previous studies reported in the state of the art regarding the use of Scratch and BBC Micro:bit in school-based experiments for learning CT. Drawing from these learnings, we list several recommendations for the development of other similar TDP tools to support the teaching of CT in a classroom setting. These recommendations concern the material, programming interface, connection, educational material, and the creation of a community.

Algorithmic Explanations: an Unplugged Instructional Approach to Integrate Science and Computational Thinking

Abstract:Computing has become essential in modern-day problem-solving, making computational literacy necessary for practicing scientists and engineers. However, K-12 science education has not reflected this computational shift. Integrating computational thinking (CT) into core science courses is an avenue that can build computational literacies in all students. Integrating CT and science involves using computational tools and methods (including programming) to understand scientific phenomena and solve science-based problems. Integrating CT and science is gaining traction, but widespread implementation is still quite limited. Several barriers have limited the integration and implementation of CT in K-12 science education. Most teachers lack experience with computer science, computing, programming, and CT and therefore are ill-prepared to integrate CT into science courses, leading to low self-efficacy and low confidence in integrating CT. This theoretical paper introduces a novel instructional approach for integrating disciplinary science education with CT using unplugged (computer-free) activities. We have grounded our approach in common computational thinking in STEM frameworks but translate this work into an accessible pedagogical strategy. We begin with an overview and critique of current approaches that integrate CT and science. Next, we introduce the Computational Thinking through Algorithmic Explanations (CT-AE) instructional approach. We then explain how CT-AE is informed by constructionist writing-to-learn science theory. Based on a pilot implementation with student learning outcomes, we discuss connections to existing literature and future directions.
AdaptKT - A Domain Adaptable Method for Knowledge Tracing.

Abstract:Knowledge tracing is a crucial and fundamental task in online education systems, which can predict students' knowledge state for personalized learning. Unfortunately, existing methods are domain-specific, whereas there are many domains (e.g., subjects, schools) in the real education scene and some domains suffer from the problem of lacking sufficient data. Therefore, how to exploit the knowledge in other domains, to improve the model's performance for target domain remains pretty much open. We term this problem as Domain Adaptation for Knowledge Tracing (DAKT), which aims to transfer knowledge from the source domain to the target one for knowledge tracing. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptable method, namely Adaptable Knowledge Tracing (AdaptKT), which contains three phases to explore this problem. Specifically, phase I is instance selection. Given the question texts of two domains, we train an auto-encoder to select and embed similar instances from both domains. Phase II is distribution discrepancy minimizing. After obtaining the selected instances and their linguistic representations, we train a knowledge tracing model and adopt the Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) to minimize the discrepancy between the distributions of the domain-specific knowledge states. Phase III is fine-tuning of the output layer. We replace the output layer of the model that trained in phase II by a new one to make the knowledge tracing model's output dimension matches the number of knowledge concepts in the target domain. The new output layer is trained while other parameters that before it are frozen. We conduct extensive experiments on two large-scale real-world datasets, where the experimental results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of AdaptKT for solving DAKT problem. We will public the code on the Github after the acceptance of the paper.

Abstract:Teaching programming using Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is gaining popularity due to their scalability and efficiency of knowledge distribution. However, participating in these courses usually means fully committing to the supplied programming environment in the browser. While this allows a consistent and controllable setup, learners do not gain experience with actual development tools, such as local code editors, testing frameworks, issue trackers or continuous integration (CI) services, which is critical for subsequent real-world projects. Furthermore, the tests for the functionality that is to be developed are oftentimes already available in MOOCs and simply need to be executed, leading to less involvement with developing appropriate tests. In order to tackle these issues while maintaining a high degree of automation and scalability, we developed Prof. CI, a novel approach to conducting online exercises. Prof. CI leverages the existing automation infrastructure that developers use daily, i.e. CI services and Github workflows, to teach test-driven development (TDD) practices. Participants work on their own repositories in Github and receive feedback and new challenges from the CI server when they push their code. We have successfully applied this approach in a pilot project with 30 undergraduate students learning the Ruby on Rails web development framework. Our evaluation shows that the exercise effectively increased students' motivation to write tests for their code. We also present the results of participant surveys, students' experiences and teachers' observations.
Exploring Test-Time Adaptation for Object Detection in Continually Changing Environments

Abstract:Real-world application models are commonly deployed in dynamic environments, where the target domain distribution undergoes temporal changes. Continual Test-Time Adaptation (CTTA) has recently emerged as a promising technique to gradually adapt a source-trained model to continually changing target domains. Despite recent advancements in addressing CTTA, two critical issues remain: 1) Fixed thresholds for pseudo-labeling in existing methodologies generate low-quality pseudo-labels, as model confidence varies across categories and domains; 2) Stochastic parameter restoration methods for mitigating catastrophic forgetting fail to effectively preserve critical information due to their intrinsic randomness. To tackle these challenges for detection models in CTTA scenarios, we present CTAOD, featuring three core components. Firstly, the object-level contrastive learning module extracts object-level features for contrastive learning to refine the feature representation in the target domain. Secondly, the adaptive monitoring module dynamically skips unnecessary adaptation and updates the category-specific threshold based on predicted confidence scores to enable efficiency and improve the quality of pseudo-labels. Lastly, the data-driven stochastic restoration mechanism selectively reset inactive parameters with higher possibilities, ensuring the retention of essential knowledge. We demonstrate the effectiveness of CTAOD on four CTTA object detection tasks, where CTAOD outperforms existing methods, especially achieving a 3.2 mAP improvement and a 20% increase in efficiency on the Cityscapes-to-Cityscapes-C CTTA task. The code will be released.
