Automatically Deriving a Uml Analysis Model from a Use Case Model

Abstract:The transition from requirements expressed in Natural Language (NL) to a structured, precise specification is an important challenge in practice. It is particularly so for object-oriented methods, defined in the context of the OMG's Model Driven Architecture (MDA). However, its automation has received little attention, mostly because requirements are in practice expressed in NL and are much less structured than other kinds of development artifacts. Such an automated transformation would enable at least the generation of an initial, likely incomplete, analysis model and enable automated traceability from requirements to code, through various intermediate models. In this thesis, we propose a method and a tool, building on existing work, to automatically generate analysis models from requirements. Such models include class, sequence and activity diagrams to describe the structure and behavior of a system. It also includes automatically establishing traceability links between the requirements and the automatically generated analysis model. Requirements are assumed to be modeled with our use case modeling approach (RUCM), which we showed to have enough expressive power, to be easy to apply, to help improve the quality of manually derived analysis models. Seven (six) case studies were performed to compare class (sequence) diagrams generated by our tool to the ones created by experts, Masters students, and trained, 4th year undergraduate students. Our results show that our method performs well when compared to reference diagrams. Further, statistical test results show that our tool significantly outperforms 4 th year engineering students, thus demonstrating the value of automation. Performance analysis results show that the execution time of the tool remains within a range of a few minutes, thus suggesting the approach is scalable. Five case studies were performed to assess our approach's capability to generate activity diagrams. The results show that high quality activity diagrams can be generated and the analysis also shows that our approach outperforms existing academic approaches and commercial tools. We also conducted two industrial case studies, yielding results that demonstrate that RUCM is applicable in two different industrial domains and that aToucan-generated analysis models are largely correct and complete from the perspective of domain experts.

Abstract:System design is an essential subject taught in information systems and has become a core course in its curriculum. Unified modelling language (UML) has been broadly adopted, and it is common to support the system design process using different diagrams. Each diagram serves a purpose by focusing on a specific part of a particular system. Design consistency ensures a seamless process, as the diagrams are generally interrelated. However, creating a well-designed system takes a lot of work, especially for university students with work experience. To overcome this challenge, aligning the concepts across diagrams is essential, which can help achieve better consistency and management of the design system, especially in an educational setting. This article is an extension of our previous work, as we have discussed a simple scenario of Automated teller machines to demonstrate the alignment concepts between UML diagrams. From a more technical perspective, the current contribution provides a Java program that aligns concepts by converting text-based use cases to text-based sequence diagrams. Then, the text is transformed in PlantUML to generate its graphical representation. The developed alignment tool is expected to contribute to helping students and instructors during the system design phases to be more consistent and practical. Limitations and future work are presented.

Automatically deriving UML sequence diagrams from use cases

Abstract:Use cases are commonly used to structure and document requirements during requirement elicitation while sequence diagrams are often used during the analysis phase to document use cases as objects’ interactions. Since creating such sequence diagrams is mostly manual, automated support would provide significant, practical help. Additionally, traceability could be easily established through automated transformation, which could then be used for instance to relate requirements to design. In this paper, we propose an approach and a tool to automatically generate sequence diagrams from use cases while establishing traceability links. We validate our approach with six case studies, where we compare sequence diagrams generated by our tool to the ones devised by experts and trained 4th year undergraduate students. Results show that sequence diagrams automatically generated by our tool are highly consistent with the ones devised by experts and are also very complete. Results also show that the automatically generated diagrams are far more complete than the ones manually created by students. These encouraging results suggest that our approach and tool would indeed provide significant, practical help to engineers creating (initial) sequence diagrams from use case descriptions.

Abstract:The two most critical phases of SDLC are the specification and the designing phase as they involve the transformation of the semantics from real world domain to computer software systems. Unified Modelling Language (UML) has been accepted as blue print for design and specification of software critical systems. But, UML structures have the weakness in preciously defining the semantics of a system. Any misinterpretation in safety critical system’s specification may risks loss of lives. Formal methods are mathematical tools and techniques which are proven very adequate, principally, at requirement specification and design level. However, formal methods are not welcomed because of rigorous use of mathematics. Therefore, a bridge is required between UML and formal methods to overcome the above insufficiencies. The endeavour of this paper is to propose a new approach by integrating UML and Z notation, a formal specification language. The main focus of this paper is on transforming the UML diagram: use case diagram, class diagram and sequence diagram to Z Schema for capturing both the syntax and semantics, particularly for safety critical system. The resultant formal model of the approach are analyzed and verified by using Z/Eves tool.

Abstract:This case study is an update-in-place refactoring transformation on UML class diagrams. Its aim is to remove clones of attributes from a class diagram, and to identify new classes which abstract groups of classes that share common data features. It is used as one of a general collection of transformations (such as the removal of redundant inheritance, or multiple inheritance) which aim to improve the quality of a specification or design level class diagram. The transformation is a typical example of a model refactoring, and illustrates the issues involved in such transformations.

Abstract:The sequence diagram can be used to design object-oriented software; however, its modeling principles are lack of research. In this paper, its application in software design was studied, and its inherent linkage with object-oriented programming was discussed, and the interactive mechanism among its elements was explored. The modeling principles for it were proposed; and its application in Model Driven Architecture (MDA) software paradigm was analyzed; and finally the model represented with it, especially the transformation and traceability of models in MDA software paradigm were analyzed. This research is useful to optimize software modeling and to automate model transformation in MDA software paradigm.

Abstract:The Instructional System Design (ISD) is an incremental process that systematically follows the phases of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. ADDIE is a best defined a model falling under the ISD framework and is composed of above five steps. Reference to ADDIE model and Rational Unified Process(RUP) specification, as well as Unified Modeling Language (UML), and with the aid of the theory and method on Software Engineering, this paper defines a set of models for ISD. It includes the model of Unified Process model for ISD and how to use UML diagrams for phases of Unified Process. The purpose of this paper is to presents a new framework for ISD in main aspects, so that the ISD becomes more standard, understand easily and implementation. Our work shows that it can provide a new way to help represent both specific and generic designs solution, and believe this can bring overall change on ISD.

Abstract:In recent past every discipline and every industry have their own methods of developing products. It may be software development, mechanics, construction, psychology and so on. These demarcations work fine as long as the requirements are within one discipline. However, if the project extends over several disciplines, interfaces have to be created and coordinated between the methods of these disciplines. Performance is an important quality aspect of Web Services because of their distributed nature. Predicting the performance of web services during early stages of software development is significant. Abstract:The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the de facto standard for requirements modeling and analysis in the software industry. However, it lacks the ability of formal analysis and verification. In this paper, we propose a synthetic approach UML-SR that integrates UML with service refinement (SR) to support the formal requirements modeling and analysis as well as formal verification. The UML-SR requirements model contains a use case diagram, the system sequence diagrams of use cases, a conceptual class diagram, and the formal contracts of system interfaces. To make this integration viable, we extend service refinement with the concepts of visibility in UML. With the visibility extension, we are able to formally specify and verify both internal and external interactions of the system. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we investigate a case study of an Online Shopping System. The results show that a consistent requirements model can be eventually derived through formal refinement and verification. The proposed approach is useful and can be further applied for the requirements modeling and formal verification in the software industry.

Abstract:Use case modeling (UCM) is commonly applied to document requirements. Use case specifications (UCSs) are usually structured, unrestricted textual documents complying With a certain template. However, because they remain essentially textual, ambiguities are inevitable. In this paper, we propose a new UCM approach, which is composed of a set of well-defined restriction rules and a new template. The goal is to reduce ambiguity and facilitate automated analysis, though the later point is not addressed in this paper. We also report on a controlled experiment which evaluates our approach in terms of its ease of application and the quality of the analysis models derived by trained individuals. Results show that the restriction rules are overall easy to apply and that our approach results in significant improvements over UCM using a standard template and no restrictions in UCSs, in terms of the correctness of derived class diagrams and the understandability of UCSs.

Abstract:In order to design a better information system, a designer would like to have notations to visualize how design experts’ know-how can be applied according to one's specific social and technology situation. We propose the combined use of a goal-oriented requirements language (GRL) and a scenario-oriented notation Use Case Maps (UCM) for representing design knowledge of information systems. Goal-oriented modelling is used throughout the requirements and design process. In GRL, goals are used to depict business objectives and system requirements, both functional and non-functional. Tasks are used to represent different ways for achieving goals. Means-ends reasoning is used to explore alternative solutions and their operationalizations into implementable system constructs. Social context is modelled in terms of dependency relationships among agents and roles. Scenarios expressed in UCM are used to describe elaborated business processes or workflow. The complementary use of goal-oriented modelling with GRL and scenario modelling with UCM is illustrated with an example of designing a web-based training system.

Abstract:Multiple-viewed requirements modeling allows requirement engineers to acquire the requirements of a system from different perspectives. Requirements are then specified in various UML models. Maintaining the requirements knowledge encoded in UML notations is tedious and error-prone, since most UML CASE tools provide poor support for reasoning and query. Ontology is a formal notation for describing concepts and their relations in a domain. Since requirement is a kind of knowledge, we propose to use knowledge engineering approach for managing the consistency and completeness of UML models. In this paper, an ontology for UML diagrams is coded in a semantic web language, OWL (Web Ontology Language). The transformation of UML Class Diagram, Sequence Diagram and State Diagram to OWL knowledge base is presented. In the end, a semantic query language, SPARQL, is used to query the knowledge base. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach through an example software system.

Abstract:Design of large software systems requires rigorous application of software engineering methods covering all phases of the software process. Debugging during the early design phases is extremely important, because late bug-fixes are expensive. In this paper, we describe an approach which facilitates debugging of UML requirements and designs. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a set of notations for object-orient design of a software system. We have developed an algorithm which translates requirement specifications in the form of annotated sequence diagrams into structured statecharts. This algorithm detects conflicts between sequence diagrams and inconsistencies in the domain knowledge. After synthesizing statecharts from sequence diagrams, these statecharts usually are subject to manual modification and refinement. By using the ``backward'' direction of our synthesis algorithm, we are able to map modifications made to the statechart back into the requirements (sequence diagrams) and check for conflicts there. Fed back to the user conflicts detected by our algorithm are the basis for deductive-based debugging of requirements and domain theory in very early development stages. Our approach allows to generate explanations on why there is a conflict and which parts of the specifications are affected.

Abstract:The UML is a defacto tool used by the software industry for designing the software system. The UML comprises 13 diagrams which are used to represent static and dynamic behavior of the system. The usecase is one of the UML diagram which is used to describe the interaction between the user and the system. In this paper, we are proposing an automated tool to translate the UML diagram and its artifacts into the text format and is represented in form of a table. This translation is carried out in two stages. 1: Converting the UML diagram into intermediate text form using generic tool called White Star UML. 2: The intermediate text is converted to table form using the tool proposed in this paper. The output achieved at the end of the second stage is further used for the abstraction of predicate logic.

Abstract:This paper is towards the development of a methodology for object-oriented software development. The intention is to support effective use of a formal model for specifying and reasoning during the requirements analysis and design of a software development process. The overall purpose is to enhance the application of the Unified Modelling Language (UML) with a formal semantics in the Rational Unified Software Development Process (RUP). The semantic framework defines the meaning of some UML submodels. It identifies both the static and dynamic relationships among these submodels. Thus, the focus of this paper is the development of a semantic model to consistently combine a use-case model and a conceptual class diagram to form a system specification.
