Abstract:In this short paper we present our solution for the Hello World case study of the Transformation Tool Contest (TTC) 2011 using the QVTR-XSLT tool. The tool supports editing and execution of the graphical notation of QVT Relations language. The case study consists of a set of simple transformation tasks which covers the basic functions required for a transformation language, such as creating, reading/querying, updating and deleting of model elements. We design a transformation for each of the tasks.

Abstract:This case for the Transformation Tool Contest 2013 is about evaluating the scope and usability of transformation languages and tools for a set of four tasks requiring very different capabilities. One task deals with typical model-to-model transformation problem, there's a model-to-text problem, there are two in-place transformation problems, and finally there's a task dealing with validation of models resulting from the transformations. The tasks build upon each other, but the transformation case project also provides all intermediate models, thus making it possible to skip tasks that are not suited for a particular tool, or for parallelizing the work among members of participating teams.

Abstract:Epsilon is an extensible platform of integrated and task-specific languages for model management. With solutions to the 2011 TTC Hello World case, this paper demonstrates some of the key features of the Epsilon Object Language (an extension and reworking of OCL), which is at the core of Epsilon. In addition, the paper introduces several of the task-specific languages provided by Epsilon including the Epsilon Generation Language (for model-to-text transformation), the Epsilon Validation Language (for model validation) and Epsilon Flock (for model migration).

Abstract:Background The idea of computational thinking is underpinned by the belief that anyone can learn and use the underlying concepts of computer science to solve everyday problems. However, most studies on the topic have investigated the development of computational thinking through programming activities, which are cognitively demanding. There is a dearth of evidence on how computational thinking augments everyday problem solving when it is decontextualized from programming. Objectives In this study, we examined how computational thinking, when untangled from the haze of programming, is demonstrated in everyday problem solving, and investigated the features of such solvable problems. Methods Using a multiple case study approach, we tracked how seven university students used computational thinking to solve the everyday problem of a route planning task as part of an 8‐week‐long Python programming course. Results and Conclusions Computational thinking practices are latent in everyday problems, and intentionally structuring everyday problems is valuable for discovering the applicability of computational thinking. Decomposition and abstraction are prominent computational thinking components used to simplify everyday problem solving. Implications It is important to strike a balance between the correctness of algorithms and simplification of the process of everyday problem solving.

Abstract:Though students are taught translation technology, when confronted with real-life translation tasks, they frequently fail to use technologies flexibly and properly. To address this issue, this study first highlighted the concept of translation technological thinking competence (TTTC) and its significance. Then it proposed the Knowing-Acting Translation Curriculum (KATC), characterised by integrating knowledge-based design, problem-oriented learning, in-class interactive modelling and near-authentic translation projects. Further, the study investigated: 1) Is KATC an effective approach to developing students' TTTC? 2) How does TTTC influence translation performance? To answer the questions, a quasi-experimental/empirical study was conducted with two groups of comparable translation students, one group given the KATC-based teaching intervention. The results show that: 1) KATC is an effective approach in improving students' TTTC, measured by enhanced performance in solving real-life translation technological problems; 2) TTTC is positively correlated with overall translation quality. Therefore, we argue that the ultimate goal of translation technology teaching is to help students become technological thinkers with high TTTC, who can maximise the power of technology to act professionally and technologically, particularly in solving translation problems that require discretionary judgment and action.

Abstract:Despite the effort invested to improve the teaching of programming, students often face problems with understanding its principles when using traditional learning approaches. This paper presents a novel teaching method for programming, combining the task-driven methodology and the case study approach. This method is called a task-driven case study. The case study aspect should provide a real-world context for the examples used to explain the required knowledge. The tasks guide students during the course to ensure that they will not fall into bad practices. We provide reasoning for using the combination of these two methodologies and define the essential properties of our method. Using a specific example of the Minesweeper case study from the Java technologies course, the readers are guided through the process of the case study selection, solution implementation, study guide writing, and course execution. The teachers’ and students’ experiences with this approach, including its advantages and potential drawbacks, are also summarized.
Synthesizing Robot Programs with Interactive Tutor Mode

Abstract:With the rapid development of the robotic industry, domestic robots have become increasingly popular. As domestic robots are expected to be personal assistants, it is important to develop a natural language-based human-robot interactive system for end-users who do not necessarily have much programming knowledge. To build such a system, we developed an interactive tutoring framework, named "Holert", which can translate task descriptions in natural language to machine-interpretable logical forms automatically. Compared to previous works, Holert allows users to teach the robot by further explaining their intentions in an interactive tutor mode. Furthermore, Holert introduces a semantic dependency model to enable the robot to "understand" similar task descriptions. We have deployed Holert on an open-source robot platform, Turtlebot 2. Experimental results show that the system accuracy could be significantly improved by 163.9% with the support of the tutor mode. This system is also efficient. Even the longest task session with 10 sentences can be handled within 0.7 s.
Looking for the Human in HRI Teaching: User-Centered Course Design for Tech-Savvy Students

Abstract:Top-down, user-centered thinking is not typically a strength of all students, especially tech-savvy computer science-related ones. We propose Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) introductory courses as a highly suitable opportunity to foster these important skills since the HRI discipline includes a focus on humans as users. Our HRI course therefore contains elements like scenario-based design of laboratory projects, discussing and merging ideas and other self-empowerment techniques. Participants describe, implement and present everyday scenarios using Pepper robots and our customized open-source visual programming tool. We observe that students obtain a good grasp of the taught topics and improve their user-centered thinking skills.

Abstract:Software systems are getting more and more complex. Model-driven engineering (MDE) offers ways to handle such increased complexity by lifting development to a higher level of abstraction. A key part in MDE are transformations that transform any given model into another. These transformations are used to generate all kinds of software artifacts from models. However, there is little consensus about the transformation tools. Thus, the Transformation Tool Contest (TTC) 2013 aims to compare different transformation engines. This is achieved through three different cases that have to be tackled. One of these cases is the Petri Net to State Chart case. A solution has to transform a Petri Net to a State Chart and has to derive a hierarchical structure within the State Chart. This paper presents the solution for this case using NMF Transformations as transformation engine.
