Abstract:We propose a novel photonic harmonic mixer operating at frequencies up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) band. By combining a broadband fiber-wireless signal with high-order harmonics of a fundamental local oscillator in an optical frequency comb generator, frequency down-conversion can be implemented without using a costly ultra-broadband photodiode. It is theoretically shown that the down-conversion efficiency and the bandwidth of the mixer is highly dependent on the optical modulation indices and the fundamental frequency of comb lines. Down-conversion of a W-band (75-110 GHz) fiber-wireless signal is experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of a multigigabit quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 62.5-, 82.5-, and 102.5-GHz carrier frequencies is studied to evaluate the down-conversion efficiency. The proposed photonic harmonic mixer can be a candidate for applications in high capacity fiber-wireless communication systems.
Compact waveguide devices based on multimode interference by using area modulation method

Abstract:Based on the overlapping-imaging characteristics of the multimode interference (MMI) and the method of area modulation, this paper presents several compact waveguide devices of MMI structure, such as variable optical attenuator, splitter and spatial optic logic coder. A full shuffle 1 × 3 switch and a three-channel wavelength 3 × 3 router switch with only one compound modulation region are proposed and analyzed. The characteristics of the switch devices have been demonstrated by 2-D BPM simulation. The simulation extinction ratio is higher than 30 dB for 1545, 1550 and 1555 wavelength.

Abstract:The monolithic integration of optical components with different functionalities on a single semiconductor wafer requires spatially selective control of bandgap energies. We have developed a simple, post-growth technique based on quantum well intermixing using ion implantation and rapid thermal annealing, which allows multiple selective area bandgap tailoring. Waveguide absorption spectra demonstrate that the bandgap energy can be shifted as much as 90 nm without any excess loss. By depositing a SiO2 layer of different thicknesses in different regions as the implantation mask, quantum wells in different sections of a wafer can be intermixed to different degrees in a single implantation and annealing process. It has also been shown that the heavy-hole and light hole states in the quantum wells can become degenerate at a certain degree of intermixing, which allows the fabrication of polarization insensitive optical amplifiers and electro-absorptive switches. The performance of both active (laser, amplifier, modulator) and passive (waveguide) components produced using this technique will be presented.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:Ultracompact 1 x N ( N > 2) beam splitters based on coupling of multiple photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are numerically demonstrated. The operation of the devices is on the basis of the self-imaging phenomenon. Variation of the effective index of modified rods induces the transverse redistribution of the N-fold images with the same coupling length, and uniform or free splitting can be achieved. The devices with three and four output channels are discussed in details as examples. Results show that this kind of beam splitters are very short. At the operating wavelength of 1.55 mu m, the splitting length of the devices is only 35 mu m even if the output channel number reaches 20. It provides a new method and a compact model to export freely the beam to N channels in PCW devices and can find practical applications in future photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A photonic approach to implementing a microwave channelized receiver based on dense wavelength division multiplexing using an optical comb is proposed. In the approach, a flat optical comb with 11 comb lines is generated using two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators. Frequency analysis of a microwave signal with multiple-frequency components is realized by using the optical comb together with an optical etalon with a periodic transfer function, a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and a photodetector array. The system is investigated numerically. Frequency measurement of a multi-frequency signal with a measurement range from 0.5-11.5 with an accuracy of ±0.5GHz is achieved. The reconfigurability of the system realized by tuning the comb-line spacing and the peak positions of the etalon is also evaluated. The improvement of the dynamic range of the system using an optimized periodic filter is also discussed.

Abstract:We consider the coupling between three photonic crystal waveguides as a multimode interference system and show that the dispersion curves of the eigenmodes intersect or almost intersect. Degenerate modes appear in the system. Due to the strong coupling between the degenerate modes, the modal patterns of the guided modes are changed obviously. We find that the power distribution of output light waves of different frequencies is different by selecting the coherence length. At the crossing point, the multimode interference is deprived and power is confined to its input direction without observable transferring to other photonic crystal waveguides. On the basis of these, a wavelength de-multiplexer or multiplexer is designed.

Abstract:Transceivers that function under a high-speed rate (over 200 Gb/s) need to have more optical power ability to overcome the power losses which is a reason for using a larger RF line connected to a Mach-Zehnder modulator for obtaining high data bitrate communication. One option to solve this problem is to use a complex laser with a power of over 100 milliwatts. However, this option can be complicated for a photonic chip circuit due to the high cost and nonlinear effects, which can increase the system noise. Therefore, we propose a better solution to increase the power level using a 4 × 1 power combiner which is based on multimode interference (MMI) using a silicon nitride (Si3N4) slot waveguide structure. The combiner was solved using the full-vectorial beam propagation method (FV-BPM), and the key parameters were analyzed using Matlab script codes. Results show that the combiner can function well over the O-band spectrum with high combiner efficiency of at least 98.2% after a short light coupling propagation of 28.78 μm. This new study shows how it is possible to obtain a transverse electric mode solution for four Gaussian coherent sources using Si3N4 slot waveguide technology. Furthermore, the back reflection (BR) was solved using a finite difference time-domain method, and the result shows a low BR of 40.15 dB. This new technology can be utilized for combining multiple coherent sources that work with a photonic chip at the O-band range.

Abstract:The stochastic parallel gradient descent with a momentum term (named MomSPGD) algorithm is innovatively presented and applied for coherent beam combining to substitute for the traditional SPGD algorithm. The feasibility of coherent synthesis system using the MomSPGD algorithm is validated through numerical simulations and experiments. The results of the simulations and the experiment indicate that the proposed algorithm can improve convergence speed and immunity of the synthesis system compared with the traditional SPGD algorithm.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the light beam propagation in periodic waveguide arrays which are elaborately modulated with certain structures. We find that the light beam may split, coalesce, deflect, and be localized during propagation in these spatially modulated waveguide arrays. All the phenomena originate from Bloch oscillations, and supply possible method for fabricating on-chip beam splitters and beam combiners.

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically propose and demonstrate a non-unitary beam-splitter (BS) by introducing coupling losses at the interface of the plasmonic waveguide and multimode dielectric waveguide (DW). The coupling losses enable us to modify the reflection and transmission factors, which can result in arbitrary shift of interference curves of two outputs. Specially, the lossy non-unitary BS can tune the amplitudes and phases of two outputs, even making them change synchronously, regardless of input phase differences. After a $$\pi /2$$ phase delay in one arm, these two outputs are fed into another multimode DW. This DW is a normal unitary BS, working like the Michelson interferometer, where anti-synchronous interference can take place. At last, the whole device outputs an invariant zero energy state in one port, exhibiting a phase-insensitive performance. Our study provides a versatile design platform to realize non-unitary/unitary BS and construct more multi-functional devices.
A Silicon Photonic 32-Input Coherent Combiner for Turbulence Mitigation in Free Space Optics Links

Abstract:A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) for the coherent combination of 32 input optical signals into a single output fiber is reported. The PIC was fabricated using a low-loss thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process and packaged with 32 input and 1 output fibers. The basic building block is a 2x2 Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with an external (to the MZI branches) and an internal thermal phase shifter, and a bandwidth in excess of 80 kHz. The PIC monolithically integrates 31 MZIs and 31 germanium photodetectors, and is suitable in principle for turbulence mitigation in LEO-ground and horizontal free space optics links. Improvements to the device for the coherent combination of 64 inputs and for the reduction of insertion losses are also discussed

Abstract:Coherent beam combination is one promising way to overcome the power limit of one single laser. In this paper, we use a Multi-Plane Light Converter to combine 12 fibers at 1.03 micron with a phase locking setup. The overall loss measurement gives a combination efficiency in the fundamental Hermite-Gaussian mode as high as 70%. This setup can generate the fundamental and higher-order Hermite-Gaussian modes and has beam steering capabilities.

Abstract:A novel Photon-Counting Spatial-Diversity-and-Multiplexing (PC-SDM) scheme is proposed for high-speed Free-Space Optical (FSO) transmission over shot-noise limited Poisson channels experiencing turbulence-induced fading. In particular, Iterative Parallel Interference Cancellation (Iter-PIC) aided Q-ary Pulse Position Modulation (Q-PPM) is employed. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme exhibits a high integrity and a high throughput, while mitigating the effects of multi-stream interference and background radiation noise.
Spatial Mode Multiplexing for Fiber-Coupled IM/DD Optical Wireless Links with Misalignment

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC) emerges as a pivotal solution for achieving terabit-level aggregate throughput in next-generation wireless networks. With the mature high-speed transceivers and advanced (de)multiplexing techniques designed for fiber optics, fiber-coupled OWC can be seamlessly integrated into existing ultra-high-speed networks such as data centres. In particular, OWC leveraging spatial mode multiplexing (SMM) and few-mode fiber (FMF) coupling can significantly increase capacity, though misalignment may reduce performance. This paper presents a thorough investigation into the SMM-enabled FMF coupling OWC systems affected by link misalignment, specifically focusing on systems with intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD) receivers. A theoretical analysis is conducted to assess the fiber coupling efficiency of the considered system in the presence of both pointing error and angle of arrival (AOA) fluctuations caused by random device vibrations. Our model elucidates the dependence of coupling efficiency to the order of the incident modes, highlighting the critical role of beam properties in system performance. To mitigate the intermodal crosstalk arising from link misalignment, we employ zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) to enhance the overall aggregated data rate. Through extensive numerical results, we identify optimal system configurations encompassing aperture design and mode selection, leading to a capacity boost exceeding 200%.

Abstract:<p>We develop a scalable multi-stage beam combining system based on the superposition of four tapered diode laser amplifiers using the coherent polarization beam combining. By employing the combination of master oscillator power amplification and active phase control of each amplifier, a stable output power of 6.9 W is obtained with a nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. The combining efficiency is 72%, and the brightness is improved by a factor of 3.3 compared to that of a single amplifier. Our system provides a new solution to obtain a high-coherence and high-brightness diode laser beam.</p>

Abstract:Integrated optics are used to achieve astronomical interferometry inside robust and compact materials, improving the instrument's stability and sensitivity. In order to perform differential phase measurements at the H$\alpha$ line (656.3 nm) with the 600-800 nm spectro-interferometer FIRST, a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is being developed in collaboration with TEEM Photonics. This PIC performs the interferometric combination of the beams coming from sub-apertures selected in the telescope pupil, thus implementing the pupil remapping technique to restore the diffraction limit of the telescope. In this work, we report on the latest developments carried out within the FIRST project to produce a high performance visible PIC. The PICs are manufactured by TEEM Photonics, using their technology based on $K_+:Na_+$ ion exchange in glass. The first part of the study consists in the experimental characterization of the fundamental properties of the waveguides, in order to build an accurate model, which is the basis for the design of more complex functions. In the second part, theoretical designs and their optimization for three types of combiner architectures are presented: symmetric directional coupler, asymmetric directional couplers and ABCD cells including achromatic phase shifters.
