Abstract:Multibeam system is a core part for wireless concurrent communication and massive multiple-input–mulitple-output (MIMO) applications. Traditional concurrent communication techniques, like phased-array or digital beam-forming system, suffer from massive RF frontends or power-hungry high-speed analog-to-digital converters, which makes them complex and expensive in fabrication. Inheriting the advantages of reflectarray and passive multibeam system, we reported in this letter a novel and cost-effective concept of steerable simultaneous multibeam antenna (SMBA). New features and the practicality of it are fully verified with theoretical analysis and experimental implementation of a prototype working at 7 GHz with 300 MHz bandwidth. With multiple beams steered simultaneously, the SMBA can eliminate the crossover regions between adjacent beams of passive multibeam antenna. Experimental results indicate its potential in the design of diverse concurrent communication systems such as base stations and point-to-point links.
Microcomb-based true-time-delay network for microwave beamforming with arbitrary beam pattern control

Abstract:Microwave phased array antennas (PAAs) are very attractive to defense applications and high-speed wireless communications for their abilities of fast beam scanning and complex beam pattern control. However, traditional PAAs based on phase shifters suffer from the beam-squint problem and have limited bandwidths. True-time-delay (TTD) beamforming based on low-loss photonic delay lines can solve this problem. But it is still quite challenging to build large-scale photonic TTD beamformers due to their high hardware complexity. In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic TTD beamforming network based on a miniature microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) source and dispersive time delay. A method incorporating optical phase modulation and programmable spectral shaping is proposed for positive and negative apodization weighting to achieve arbitrary microwave beam pattern control. The experimentally demonstrated TTD beamforming network can support a PAA with 21 elements. The microwave frequency range is $\mathbf{8\sim20\ {GHz}}$, and the beam scanning range is $\mathbf{\pm 60.2^\circ}$. Detailed measurements of the microwave amplitudes and phases are performed. The beamforming performances of Gaussian, rectangular beams and beam notch steering are evaluated through simulations by assuming a uniform radiating antenna array. The scheme can potentially support larger PAAs with hundreds of elements by increasing the number of comb lines with broadband microcomb generation.

Abstract:This article presents a Ka -band 64-element phased-array receiver with four simultaneously reconfigurable beams for millimeter-wave (mmW) satellite communications, where each beam utilizes the maximum available antenna aperture to enhance the combining gain. To address the design challenge of the large area induced by the multiple beamforming networks (BFNs), the beamformer utilizes a digital-assisted variable-gain phase-shifting technique and an active combining scheme to enable compact implementation and facilitate array design. This article also proposes a cancellation-based inter-beam interference reduction technique using multiple beams to support steerable nulling to boost beam-to-beam isolation, which offers an alternative solution to reduce array sidelobes. The proposed 8 x 4 beamformer integrates 32-path independent plural weighting channels and is fabricated in 65-nm CMOS with a compact chip area of 5.3 x 4 mm(2) . Each element achieves a gain of 26.7 dB, a noise figure (NF) of 3.7-4.5 dB, and an input-referred 1-dB gain compression point (IPIDB) of -32.5 dBm at 29.5 GHz. The proposed 64-element receive phased array is capable of scanning +/- 50(degrees) at 29.5 GHz without grating lobes at both the azimuth and elevation directions. To the authors' best knowledge, the proposed phased-array receiver presents the largest number of co-aperture reconfigurable beams among mmW-integrated RF-beamforming phased arrays.

Abstract:Due to the severe pathloss experienced by electromagnetic waves in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, a substantial challenge in their design is to have an adequate coverage area. With the objective of improving the coverage area and the sum rate attained, we conceive new full-duplex (FD) mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-relay systems. Specifically, we propose a novel two-timescale analog-digital hybrid beamforming scheme for maximizing the sum rate, while reducing the system's complexity and the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead, as well as mitigating both the effects of self-interference and that of outdated CSIs caused by the associated delays. In the proposed scheme, the long-timescale analog beamforming matrices are designed based on the available channel statistics and updated in a frame-based manner, where a frame contains a fixed number of time slots. By contrast, the short-timescale digital beamforming matrices are optimized more frequently - namely for each time slot - based on the low-dimensional effective CSI matrices available on a real-time basis. We develop both an efficient analog beamforming algorithm based on the cut-set bound as well as on stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) and an innovative digital beamforming algorithm that relies on the theory of penalty dual decomposition (PDD), where our design objective is to maximize the system's sum rate. Both the convergence properties and the computational complexity of the proposed algorithms are also examined. Our simulation results show that the proposed two-timescale hybrid beamforming design significantly outperforms the conventional beamformers both in terms of requiring a lower CSI-signalling overhead and a higher sum rate in the face of realistic outdated CSIs.

Abstract:A photonic approach to implementing a microwave channelized receiver based on dense wavelength division multiplexing using an optical comb is proposed. In the approach, a flat optical comb with 11 comb lines is generated using two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators. Frequency analysis of a microwave signal with multiple-frequency components is realized by using the optical comb together with an optical etalon with a periodic transfer function, a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and a photodetector array. The system is investigated numerically. Frequency measurement of a multi-frequency signal with a measurement range from 0.5-11.5 with an accuracy of ±0.5GHz is achieved. The reconfigurability of the system realized by tuning the comb-line spacing and the peak positions of the etalon is also evaluated. The improvement of the dynamic range of the system using an optimized periodic filter is also discussed.

In this approach, a flat optical comb with 11 comb lines is generated using two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs). Frequency analysis of an intercepted microwave signal with multiple microwave frequencies is realized by using the optical comb together with a Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon, a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and a photodetector array. A simulation is performed. A tunable operating bandwidth of 11 or 16.5 GHz with a tunable accuracy of ±0.5 or ±0.75 GHz is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, a broadband photonic beam processor is presented for the all-optical multifunction integrated receiver. By implementing echo signals with optical beam multi-domain processing based on space-to-time mapping and time-to-frequency mapping, the non-mechanical control of expected beam pointing is enabled while the target within the beam can be imaged simultaneously. A proof-of-concept experiment with a 4-element phased array is performed in Ka band. The beam pointing is set to be 0° and 12.5°, where two-dimensional images of moving targets inside the beam region are obtained, respectively. The suppression ratio to the beam region outside is measured to be 26.8 dB. And the range and cross-range imaging resolution is 0.042 m × 0.051 m. A comparison with a cascade mode of single-function microwave photonic modules shows that the multifunction integrated photonic beam processor has reduced the system loss by 32.4 dB. The proposed beam processor enables multi-element broadband phased arrays with less complexity and power consumption.

Abstract:A kind of architecture of optical steering of a phased-array antenna (PAA) based on a fast optical delay-line switch is proposed and experimentally studied. A 4-bit fast optical delay-line switch with switching speed of less than 30 mu s is constructed using cascaded solid-state optical switches. A distributed feedback laser integrated with electro-absorption modulator is employed for and delivery. Our experimental system of transporting X-band microwave signals over one antenna element shows a signal-to-noise ratio better than 55 dB and low crosstalk of less than -50 dB. The structure features a compact design, a low-cost solution, a fast tilting speed, and true-time-delay beam steering. The proposed scheme of optical steering is very promising for wideband X-band PAA applications. (c) 2006 Wiley periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The state-of-the-art phased array-based digital beamforming systems suffer from disadvantages of high power consumption, high cost, and system complexity due to the massive use of transmitter/receiver (T/R) modules and high-speed digital and digital-analog mixed devices. In this paper, we point out that by proposing a new concept “complex domain” radio frequency (RF) frontend, the relatively slowly changed waveform delay information required to accomplish adaptive beamforming can be separated from wideband RF signals, based on which a self-contained beamforming system can be implemented with a low-speed baseband. By introducing vector RF multipliers in the proposed frontend, the amplitude and phase of RF signals can be simultaneously controlled by the real and imaginary parts of complex numbers, such that beamforming algorithms derived in complex domain can be directly applied without any form of transformation. By doing so, the massive use of conventional T/R modules and high-speed baseband devices can be avoided. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration based on commercial components have validated the proposed approach. Our method is able to significantly simplify the realization and decrease the cost of wideband digital beamforming systems, and can be widely used in low cost, power efficient beamforming applications.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a space-fed beamforming approach capable of steering beams up to & PLUSMN;70 & DEG; with a focal ratio (F/D) reduced to 0.27 and a scan loss remained 4 dB. It is implemented based on an mmWave phase reconfigurable metasurface, and an unconventional array-fed architecture. By doing so, while the total profile of conventional space-fed phased arrays can be significantly reduced, specifications such as scan range and scan loss can be simultaneously improved. Compared with conventional phased array systems, such specifications are unique, and can be used to realize low-profile, cost-effective, space-fed phased arrays requiring ultrawide coverages at mmWave frequencies.

Abstract:Efficient spatiotemporal control of optical beams is of paramount importance in diverse technological domains. Conventional systems focusing on quasi-static beam control demand precise phase or wavelength tuning for steering. This work presents a time-efficient solution for dynamic beam steering, emphasizing high-duty-cycle operation with fast scan rates, and eliminating the need for active tuning of the beam direction. We achieve 100%-duty-cycle scans at a rate of $\sim$9.8 GHz within an angular range of $\sim$1$^\circ$. Furthermore, leveraging the dispersion characteristics of a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA), we devise a broadband source array that seamlessly transitions from continuous-angular steering to pulsed discrete-angular operation, unlocking possibilities for high-sensitivity angle-, range-, and time-resolved imaging. We also elucidate the adaptability of integrated photonic designs incorporating wavelength-selective switches and spectral dispersers, for enabling a versatile on-chip realization of the proposed beam steering schemes.

Abstract:Optical beamforming networks (OBFNs) based on optical true time delay lines (OTTDLs) are well-known as the promising candidate to solve the bandwidth limitation of traditional electronic phased array antennas (PAAs) due to beam squinting. Here we report the first monolithic 1x8 microwave photonic beamformer based on switchable OTTDLs on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The chip consists of a modulator, an eight-channel OBFN, and 8 photodetectors, which includes hundreds of active and passive components in total. It has a wide operating bandwidth from 8 to 18 GHz, which is almost two orders larger than that of electronic PAAs. The beam can be steered to 31 distinguishable angles in the range of -75.51° to 75.64° based on the beam pattern calculation with the measured RF response. The response time for beam steering is 56 {\mu}s. These results represent a significant step towards the realization of integrated microwave photonic beamformers that can satisfy compact size and low power consumption requirements for the future radar and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 63-channel grating-lobe-free optical phased array, in which end-fire antennas were fabricated with a pitch of 775 nm to eliminate grating lobe. Phase mismatch was configured to suppress the optical crosstalk in the dense waveguides. Two-dimensional beam steering within 16°× 2.7° were presented by thermal phase shifting and wavelength tuning.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-group beamforming system based on an integrated optical true time delay line (OTTDL) chip is presented in this paper. Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) can be realized by this system. This system operating at 10.2 GHz can achieve no-distortion beam scanning, and three directions (0°, ±90°) are shown in the paper. Besides, the speed of beam scanning is measured as 1.2 kHz.

Abstract:Traditional phased arrays based on phase shifters suffer severely from the beam-squint problem when operating at the wideband mode. Optical beamforming is one feasible solution for broadband beam steering, of which the performance, however, is affected by the amplitude–phase coupling. To solve this problem, we propose an optical beamforming system with amplitude–phase coupling suppression based on polarization manipulation. A polarization controller is used to control the transmission of carrier light along the fast or slow axis in the polarization-maintaining fiber. As there is a fixed transmission time difference between the two orthogonal modes, the phase adjustment can be achieved with low amplitude variation because of the low polarization-dependent loss. In addition, the intensity of the signal can be controlled using a polarizer with negligible phase variation, realizing amplitude control with low phase coupling. Experimental results show that the amplitude–phase coupling coefficient is about ps/dB, while the phase–amplitude coupling is less than dB/ps. The performance of the optical beamforming is analyzed by numerical simulation and proof-of-concept experiment, showing that the beam pointing deflection is less than 0.1°, while the main-lobe-to-sidelobe suppression ratio deteriorates less than 1 dB when the beam scans from 0° to 45°.

Abstract:We propose a novel dispersion-based optical beamforming network scheme employing phase modulation and direct detection. Optical phase modulators have the advantages of simple-structure, low loss and absence of bias. Dispersion-induced phase-to-intensity conversion is utilized to facilitate direct detection. A structure of wideband dispersive device (WDD) cascaded with periodic dispersive device (PDD) is introduced to enhance the system flexibility, so that the delay adjustability and RF response can be properly designed respectively by choosing appropriate dispersions of the WDD and PDD. A concept-proof system with a wideband chirped fiber grating (CFG) as the WDD and two multiband CFGs (MCFG1 and MCFG2) as the PDD separately is built to demonstrate the basic idea. The delay tuning range is 0–1.8ns with increment of 164.2ps. The passband center is 30GHz for MCFG1 and 20GHz for MCFG2, and the fractional bandwidth is 51.8%. The shot-noise-limited spurious-free dynamic range is also analyzed and measured to be 105.7dB⋅Hz2/3 when the average photocurrent is 2.7mA.
