Abstract:Dual-chirp waveform, as a type of wideband radar signal that can improve the range-Doppler resolution in radar system has been studied widely. In this paper, a photonic scheme for generation of frequency- and bandwidth-doubling dual-chirp waveform is proposed and experimental demonstrated. An integrated dual-parallel MZM is applied, where a microwave signal and a single-chirp signal are modulated, biasing at null and full points, respectively. An electrical rather than optical band-pass filter that used in the system can reduce the complexity. Experimental results perform the generated dual-chirp waveforms with frequency of 6 GHz and bandwidth of 2 GHz. The time-bandwidth product is about 154.2. Potentially, this approach can be a method for high frequency, large bandwidth and long duration dual-chirp waveforms generation.

Abstract:Beamforming as a basic approach of array signal processing has been widely used in many important applications such as radar, sonar, and communications. Typical algorithms include time-delay-based and FFT-based, and various implementation structures have been developed. For bandpass sampled signals, a true time-delay beamformer involves three processes: signal demodulation to obtain its complex envelop; delay of the complex envelop; and phase rotation of the delayed complex envelop. Those processes can be realized using FIR filters. In this paper, a few improvements are proposed for the above bandpass beamforming implementation, including a new way of filter coefficient selection and a polyphase filter structure. The new implementation generates exactly identical results as the conventional zero-padding interpolation beamformer, and meanwhile can readily fit into a low-power, highly-parallel processing unit such as FPGA.

Abstract:Due to the severe pathloss experienced by electromagnetic waves in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, a substantial challenge in their design is to have an adequate coverage area. With the objective of improving the coverage area and the sum rate attained, we conceive new full-duplex (FD) mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-relay systems. Specifically, we propose a novel two-timescale analog-digital hybrid beamforming scheme for maximizing the sum rate, while reducing the system's complexity and the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead, as well as mitigating both the effects of self-interference and that of outdated CSIs caused by the associated delays. In the proposed scheme, the long-timescale analog beamforming matrices are designed based on the available channel statistics and updated in a frame-based manner, where a frame contains a fixed number of time slots. By contrast, the short-timescale digital beamforming matrices are optimized more frequently - namely for each time slot - based on the low-dimensional effective CSI matrices available on a real-time basis. We develop both an efficient analog beamforming algorithm based on the cut-set bound as well as on stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) and an innovative digital beamforming algorithm that relies on the theory of penalty dual decomposition (PDD), where our design objective is to maximize the system's sum rate. Both the convergence properties and the computational complexity of the proposed algorithms are also examined. Our simulation results show that the proposed two-timescale hybrid beamforming design significantly outperforms the conventional beamformers both in terms of requiring a lower CSI-signalling overhead and a higher sum rate in the face of realistic outdated CSIs.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonic scheme to generate and transmit dual-band dual-chirp microwave waveforms based on a single dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM), which structure is simple and compact. The center frequencies of the generated dual-band dual-chirp signals are frequency-doubling and can be adjusted flexibly and independently to meet the practical requirement of radar systems. Moreover, chromatic dispersion-induced power fading (CDIP) can be eliminated by appropriately adjusting the direct current biases of the modulator to achieve carrier-suppressed single-sideband (CS-SSB) modulation. The proposed method is theoretically analyzed and experimentally proved. Dual-band dual-chirp signals with center frequencies of 12 GHz, 17 GHz, and 8 GHz, 14 GHz are successfully generated. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and pulse compression performance of the generated signals are evaluated. The proposed scheme is suitable for dual-band radar systems to conduct target detection, Doppler blind speed elimination, and one-to-multi base station transmission.

Abstract:Abstract Microwave photonics aims to overcome the limitations of radiofrequency devices and systems by leveraging the unique properties of optics in terms of low loss and power consumption, broadband operation, immunity to interference and tunability. This enables versatile functions like beam steering, crucial in emerging applications such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5/6G networks. The main problem with current photonic beamforming architectures is that there is a tradeoff between resolution and bandwidth, which has not yet been solved. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel switched optical delay line beamformer architecture that is capable of achieving the desired maximum resolution (i.e., 2 M pointing angles for M -bit coding) and provides broadband operation simultaneously. The concept is demonstrated by means of a compact (8 × 3 mm 2 ) 8 (5-bit) delay line Silicon Photonic chip implementation capable of addressing 32 pointing angles and offering 20 GHz bandwidth operation.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multi-channel multi-bit programmable photonic beamformer, which consists of multiple parallel photonic true-time delay (PTTD) subnetworks based on cascaded DWDMs. Each PTTD subnetwork can provide multi-bit true-time delays (TTDs) for a multi-channel modulated RF signal of a phased array antenna (PAA) and operate over a wide RF range from 10 MHz to 12 GHz. The RF signal is modulated to a spectrally separated laser array combined by a DWDM to form a multi-channel spatially separated PAA. The multi-bit TTDs for scanning PAA angles are rapidly programmed by means of a control circuit of optical switches in the PTTD subnetwork. By using an optical splitter, multiple parallel PTTD subnetworks can be topologically configured out for a PAA with a large number of elements. The obtained radiation patterns demonstrate that the proof-of-concept experimental result agrees well with the theoretical analysis, verifying the feasibility of the proposed photonic beamformer.

Abstract:In this paper, a broadband photonic beam processor is presented for the all-optical multifunction integrated receiver. By implementing echo signals with optical beam multi-domain processing based on space-to-time mapping and time-to-frequency mapping, the non-mechanical control of expected beam pointing is enabled while the target within the beam can be imaged simultaneously. A proof-of-concept experiment with a 4-element phased array is performed in Ka band. The beam pointing is set to be 0° and 12.5°, where two-dimensional images of moving targets inside the beam region are obtained, respectively. The suppression ratio to the beam region outside is measured to be 26.8 dB. And the range and cross-range imaging resolution is 0.042 m × 0.051 m. A comparison with a cascade mode of single-function microwave photonic modules shows that the multifunction integrated photonic beam processor has reduced the system loss by 32.4 dB. The proposed beam processor enables multi-element broadband phased arrays with less complexity and power consumption.

Abstract:We propose a novel dispersion-based optical beamforming network scheme employing phase modulation and direct detection. Optical phase modulators have the advantages of simple-structure, low loss and absence of bias. Dispersion-induced phase-to-intensity conversion is utilized to facilitate direct detection. A structure of wideband dispersive device (WDD) cascaded with periodic dispersive device (PDD) is introduced to enhance the system flexibility, so that the delay adjustability and RF response can be properly designed respectively by choosing appropriate dispersions of the WDD and PDD. A concept-proof system with a wideband chirped fiber grating (CFG) as the WDD and two multiband CFGs (MCFG1 and MCFG2) as the PDD separately is built to demonstrate the basic idea. The delay tuning range is 0–1.8ns with increment of 164.2ps. The passband center is 30GHz for MCFG1 and 20GHz for MCFG2, and the fractional bandwidth is 51.8%. The shot-noise-limited spurious-free dynamic range is also analyzed and measured to be 105.7dB⋅Hz2/3 when the average photocurrent is 2.7mA.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonic method of generating frequency quadrupling signal for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication system. The frequency quadrupling scheme is based on carriers cancellation within an integrated dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), thus avoiding the use of an optical filter or an electrical phase shifter. The effects of modulation-depth on the power level of generated mm-wave signal as well as on the system performance of wireless transmission are analyzed theoretically and measured experimentally. In the experiment, transmission of 155Mbps OOK baseband data on a photonic-generated 40GHz mm-wave over a length of 25km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) and 20m wireless distance with error free is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-group beamforming system based on an integrated optical true time delay line (OTTDL) chip is presented in this paper. Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) can be realized by this system. This system operating at 10.2 GHz can achieve no-distortion beam scanning, and three directions (0°, ±90°) are shown in the paper. Besides, the speed of beam scanning is measured as 1.2 kHz.

Abstract:Optical beamforming networks (OBFNs) based on optical true time delay lines (OTTDLs) are well-known as the promising candidate to solve the bandwidth limitation of traditional electronic phased array antennas (PAAs) due to beam squinting. Here we report the first monolithic 1x8 microwave photonic beamformer based on switchable OTTDLs on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The chip consists of a modulator, an eight-channel OBFN, and 8 photodetectors, which includes hundreds of active and passive components in total. It has a wide operating bandwidth from 8 to 18 GHz, which is almost two orders larger than that of electronic PAAs. The beam can be steered to 31 distinguishable angles in the range of -75.51° to 75.64° based on the beam pattern calculation with the measured RF response. The response time for beam steering is 56 {\mu}s. These results represent a significant step towards the realization of integrated microwave photonic beamformers that can satisfy compact size and low power consumption requirements for the future radar and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:A novel optical beamforming network scheme based on broadband optical source and Chirped Fiber Grating as true-time-delay module is proposed in the paper. The principle of this scheme is illustrated by theoretical analysis and the feasibility is validated by experiment. In experiment, Er-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) is used as broad band optical source, chirped fiber grating as dispersive element is used for time delay unit, and tunable optical filter is used to choose operation wavelength. In 9.25~10.25 GHz microwave band, optical true time delay performance is measured and results shows that the delay time consistency and the ratio of the RF signal to its noise (SNR) meet the practical demands, and such system has many potentials in optical complexity, cost, tune speed and the system expansibility.

Abstract:Microwave phased array antennas (PAAs) are very attractive to defense applications and high-speed wireless communications for their abilities of fast beam scanning and complex beam pattern control. However, traditional PAAs based on phase shifters suffer from the beam-squint problem and have limited bandwidths. True-time-delay (TTD) beamforming based on low-loss photonic delay lines can solve this problem. But it is still quite challenging to build large-scale photonic TTD beamformers due to their high hardware complexity. In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic TTD beamforming network based on a miniature microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) source and dispersive time delay. A method incorporating optical phase modulation and programmable spectral shaping is proposed for positive and negative apodization weighting to achieve arbitrary microwave beam pattern control. The experimentally demonstrated TTD beamforming network can support a PAA with 21 elements. The microwave frequency range is $\mathbf{8\sim20\ {GHz}}$, and the beam scanning range is $\mathbf{\pm 60.2^\circ}$. Detailed measurements of the microwave amplitudes and phases are performed. The beamforming performances of Gaussian, rectangular beams and beam notch steering are evaluated through simulations by assuming a uniform radiating antenna array. The scheme can potentially support larger PAAs with hundreds of elements by increasing the number of comb lines with broadband microcomb generation.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (MMW) and terahertz technology has garnered great interest in various fields due to its wide bandwidth availability. However, generating MMW signals that concurrently possess a high frequency, extensive bandwidth, and broad tuning range presents significant challenges. We propose a photonic approach for generating MMW signals leveraging photonic multiplication and delay-matched heterodyne. This method expands the signal bandwidth through four-wave mixing (FWM) and optical sideband heterodyne beating, extending beyond traditional external modulation schemes. By adjusting the seed light frequency for FWM or modifying the electrical driving signal, the system can span a wide range of spectrum and realize multi-octave tuning of the operating frequency. Furthermore, spurious signal and distortion arising from time-delay mismatch between the sidebands are resolved and eliminated through photonic delay matching. Experimental demonstration of MMW signal generation, showcasing random frequency hopping with up to 30 GHz bandwidth across multiple bands—Ku&Ka (13-40 GHz), W (75-105 GHz), and D (140-170 GHz) bands, verifies the system's extensive tunability and broad frequency coverage. In addition, a variety of multiwaveform types were produced, including stepped frequencies, linear, and nonlinear frequency sweeps, further illustrating the system's versatile waveform configurability. This work holds potential for significant advancements in MMW communications, radar and imaging applications.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) beams with abundant spectrum resources and low beam divergence can be combined with orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams characterized by orthogonal propagation to multifold the capacity of wireless communication systems. However, in order to support the explosive growth of massive communication data traffic, THz OAM must be further enhanced with other multiplexing technologies. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new multifunctional devices. In this article, we propose a novel broadband dual-polarized reflective metasurface, which can generate two coaxially propagating OAM beams with distinct modes for each polarization. Because of the geometric symmetry, the metasurface shows the same electromagnetic response with respect to both x -and y -polarized waves, thus possessing the dual-polarized property. Simulated and measured results verify that the metasurface can realize the incorporation of OAM multiplexing and polarization multiplexing in a broad frequency range of 90–110 GHz. The crosstalks from other OAM modes and polarizations are lower than $-$ 16 dB and $-$ 21 dB, respectively. Based on the metasurface, a THz wireless communication system was demonstrated by multiplexing four independent OAM beams with each channel carrying a 6-Gbaud quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) signal, so that an aggregate 48 Gbit/s data transmission with bit error rate (BER) below 3.8e-3 was achieved. This work verifies the feasibility of metasurface for multidimensional multiplexing in the THz region, meaning the metasurface may serve as a promising candidate for ultrahigh speed THz communication systems.
