Abstract:Phase measuring profilometry based on structured illumination with a digital projector has great flexibility. However, the phase error introduced by the gamma nonlinearity of the projector and the presence of speckle noise inevitably decreases the accuracy and resolution of the measurement. This paper presents a new phase error correction algorithm by which the odd-step fringe projection is done twice with an initial phase shift of π between, and the two captured deformed fringe images are then digitally subtracted. The speckle noise is further suppressed by applying a sine-cosine median filter. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that this algorithm is effective and fast.

Abstract:Phase-coding methods have been widely used for three-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement, which use sinusoidal phase-shifting patterns to recover wrapped phase and the stair phase-coding patterns to determine the fringe order. However, due to the system nonlinearity, random noises, and image blurring, the total number of codewords that can be used is limited. In order to increase the number of codewords, this article presents a two-digit phase-coding (TDPC) strategy, in which each fringe of the sinusoidal phase-shifting patterns corresponds to a two-digit codeword encoded in the phase-coding patterns. In this way, more codewords can be generated without increasing additional patterns. Experiments of the cup and sculptures have been carried out, and the results confirm that the TDPC method can recover the 3-D shape of objects more robustly. Meanwhile, the precision experiment of a standard ball proves the high accuracy of the proposed method.

Optimization of binary structured light coding for fast 3D shape measurement

Abstract:In order to avoid the nonlinear problem caused by multilevel gray value coding,and to improve the speed and the adaptability of the measurement,a new method of binary encoding is proposed to get the stair phase.First of all,using the traditional N-step phase shift method,a number of sinusoidal grating fringes are projected onto the surface of the object to be measured,and then a number of binary coding fringes are projected onto the tested objects.After the wrapped phase is obtained through a four-step phase-shifting method,by using the stair phase got from the binary encoded fringe demodulation,the grating period orders are determined,the wrapped phase is unwrapped according to the periodic orders,and eventually the absolute phase is obtained.The method of using binary fringes to encode stair phase has overcome the the nonlinear problen.Experimental results show that with a standard of the number of single channel image projection,and under the same conditions,the measurement speed is enhanced by 12.5 ％ compared with that of existing method.The method is efficient for the 3D shape measurement of objects.

Abstract:The nonlinear errors caused by the gamma effect seriously affect the measurement accuracy of phase-measuring profilometry systems. We present a novel robust end-to-end pattern optimization technology for phase-height mapping. This method generates standard sinusoidal patterns on the reference plane on a camera image instead of on a projection image by optimizing the projection image, which can avoid phase errors due to phase conversion from projector to camera. The pixel set mapping is achieved by chessboard calibration; then the projection image is optimized with the multiscale optimization method and the dislocation optimization method based on proportional integral derivative control. The experiments show that the proposed method can effectively avoid the influence of nonlinear effect and achieve high-quality three-dimensional measurement.

Abstract:In fringe projection profilometry based on temporal phase unwrapping, determining a fringe order map commonly requires a large number of fringes. To reduce the fringe number, this paper proposes a concise absolute phase retrieval algorithm just by projecting four fringes. The first two orthogonal fringes with relatively large frequency can collect reliable height information. The second two fringes are designed the same as the first two, but the only difference is that each 2π-phase of them is shifted by a unique amount, which can robustly label a large number of fringe orders. For decoding the fringes, we develop an average intensity one-time extraction algorithm, which allows for the rapid acquisition of the two pairs of alternating current components. From this, the wrapped phase containing height information and the stair-coded phase providing fringe orders can be directly extracted by arctangent operation in a point-to-point manner. Furthermore, we also develop a universal fringe order correction algorithm that can simultaneously correct the common errors and the misalignment between the wrapped phase and fringe orders. Experiment results demonstrate that this method achieves comparable accuracy and adaptability to the phase-coding method, while utilizing two fewer fringes.

Abstract:Code-based fringe projection profilometry (CBFPP) is widely applied to 3-D shape measurements due to its high accuracy and simple structure. However, phase-jump errors easily occur around the boundary of each period-wrapped phase, as the phase-jump regions are unstable. In this article, a preavoided method is proposed to suppress the phase-jump errors. The proposed method automatically generates an additional staggered fringe order by referring to the in-built fringe order, without the need of projecting further fringe patterns or altering the fringe sequence. Moreover, by employing a simple optimization algorithm, the proposed method is effective in eliminating the frequently occurring error propagation problem of current processing frameworks. The experimental results show that the proposed method is applicable for the correction of phase-jump errors for all types of code-based fringe projection profilometry methods under various scenarios.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) requires an auxiliary projection sequence or spatial landmark to remove phase ambiguity, thereby severely limiting the measurement speed or depth range for moving objects. In this article, we propose a novel quasi-periodic phase coding method for long-depth-range 3-D measurements of moving objects without temporal or spatial limitations. This article mainly focuses on the construction of the encoding schema for quasi-periodic fringe patterns and the execution of the phase decoding framework for long-depth-range 3-D measurements of moving surfaces. First, a set of stripes with similar periods is designed on the basis of a preset equivalent period, and the various combinations of these stripes constitute quasi-periodic fringe patterns. Second, we present a progressive phase recovery strategy for decoding quasi-periodic fringe images, in which the wrapped phase is converted first into a continuous phase distribution and then into the absolute phase. In this strategy, the absolute phase map is effectively screened via the piecewise linear transformation from the quasi-periodic phase to the equivalent phase. Compared with the existing FPP methods, the proposed method avoids the low-frame-rate constraint and the need for landmark configuration. Simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed method is applicable for dynamic 3-D measurements of moving objects over a large-depth range.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is the core of phase shift profilometry. Conventional phase unwrapping usually requires the projection of additional patterns or other constrains to unwrap the high-frequency wrapped phase into absolute phase, which increases time consumption and complicates measurement procedures. To solve this problem, we propose a self-coding phase shift (SCPS) method for retrieving the absolute phase. Two sets of codes are encoded into the projection patterns, namely, the De-Bruijn sequence code and the phase gradient code. The fringe order can then be determined by combining these two different encodings. The proposed method does not require any prior information and only demands four phase shift fringes. Experimental results demonstrate that the SCPS method is highly robust and accurate in measuring both complex and separated objects.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely studied and used in three dimensional (3D) shape measurement because of its non-contact and high accuracy. By analyzing the captured fringe patterns, phase data can be demodulated with regard to depth. However, measurement efficiency decreases as number of the projected patterns increases. Therefore, it is a challenge to improve the projection rate, while ensuring measurement accuracy. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a complementary encoding method to correct the jump error of the unwrapping phase based on color phase-encoded fringe projection. Meanwhile, number of the projected patterns is reduced by using color modulation technique to generate composite fringes. The 3D reconstruction results of the proposed method are verified by qualitative experiments. Moreover, effectiveness of its error correction is discussed by quantitative experiments.

Abstract:Based on the relative position relationship between the measured object and the high-frequency fringe in the on-line three-dimensional (3D) measurement, an improved dual-frequency on-line 3D measurement method is proposed. By controlling the acquisition points when the measured object moves, the light intensity distribution of the high-frequency fringe in each deformed pattern after pixel matching can be exactly consistent. The full-cycle equal phase-shift algorithm is directly applied for phase calculation so that the filtering process is avoided and the 3D reconstruction accuracy is improved. The light intensity component of the high-frequency fringe is designed to be much smaller than that of the low-frequency fringe, and it can be considered as faint background light and the interference of high-frequency fringe on phase calculation is further reduced. The simulated and experimental results show that compared with other methods, the proposed method can improve the reconstruction accuracy effectively.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is one of the key problems in fringe projection profilometry (FPP). How to achieve unambiguous fringe step order to perform phase unwrapping with few patterns still face a major challenge. We propose a robust phase unwrapping method by using a pair of encoded color fringe patterns, one is a conventional three-step phase-shifting color fringe pattern with equal phase shifts, another is added an additional phase shift valve t(k) to the former, in which t(k) is related to the order of fringe periods. A single-valued solution function for t(k) is constructed and used to determine the unique fringe order. Besides, multiplexing this pair of fringes can help denoise the extracted wrapped phase to improve the accuracy. The simulation and experimental results proved that the proposed method can achieve unambiguous phase unwrapping for high-frequency fringe patterns. The proposed method is also applicable for isolated objects.

Abstract:Phase retrieval is a very important procedure in fringe projection-based 3-D shape measurement. Gray-level coding has become the focus of investigation due to its excellent phase order calculation ability. However, most of these methods have to trade off the quantity of additional projected fringe patterns against the precision of phase orders computation. For this reason, an absolute phase retrieval method based on a single large-range gray-level coding pattern is proposed. By adopting two different arctangent functions that have different principal intervals, two truncated phases can be calculated. Based on the signs of the two truncated phases, the fringe period is further subdivided into four sub-regions. Finally, different codewords are assigned to the corresponding sub-regions to form the coding pattern. Compared with the existing algorithms, a larger range of phase order can be represented by the proposed single coding pattern, and the coding pattern only involves two gray levels (black and white), which is helpful in suppressing the quantization error. Additionally, to further improve the accuracy of absolute phase calculation, an error codes correction method based on nearest-neighborhood prediction is proposed. Through measurements on different objects (involving simple, complex, isolated, and standard objects), the results of the experiment show that the method proposed in this article can obtain more accurate reconstruction results while using fewer coding patterns than the other methods.

Abstract:An on-line Phase Measuring Profilometry(PMP)based on least-square iteration was proposed to simplify the complexities of system installment and to avoid the influence of additional phase ?shifting caused by the non-parallelism between grating lines and object's displacement in the PMP based on synchronous detection.In measurement processing,the sinusoidal grating with arbitrary grid line direction was projected onto an object,and a CCD was used to capture the deformed fringe patterns.After pixel matching,fringe patterns were used to evaluate the phase distribution.The phase-shifting was determined as arbitrary values by both projection system and object's displacement.Finally,the least-square iteration was used to calculate the phases.The experiment result shows when the grating line directions on the reference plane are changed,the measurement resultsare stable,and the root-mean-square error is less than 0.169 9mm.It concludes that the proposed method relaxes the restriction of the spatial location of measurement equipment,increases the measurement flexibility and makes the PMP more applicable.

Abstract:The phase-to-height imaging model, as a three-dimensional (3D) measurement technology, has been commonly applied in fringe projection to assist surface profile measurement, where the efficient and accurate calculation of phase plays a critical role in precise imaging. To deal with multiple extra coded patterns and 2π jump error caused to the existing absolute phase demodulation methods, a novel method of phase demodulation is proposed based on dual variable-frequency (VF) coded patterns. In this paper, the frequency of coded fringe is defined as the number of coded fringes within a single sinusoidal fringe period. First, the effective wrapped phase (EWP) as calculated using the four-step phase shifting method was split into the wrapped phase region with complete period and the wrapped phase region without complete period. Second, the fringe orders in wrapped phase region with complete period were decoded according to the frequency of the VF coded fringes and the continuous characteristic of the fringe order. Notably, the sampling frequency of fast Fourier transform (FFT) was determined by the length of the decoding interval and can be adjusted automatically with the variation in height of the object. Third, the fringe orders in wrapped phase region without complete period were decoded depending on the consistency of fringe orders in the connected region of wrapped phase. Last, phase demodulation was performed. The experimental results were obtained to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in the phase demodulation of both discontinuous objects and highly abrupt objects.

Abstract:Structured light has developed rapidly as a non-contact active three-dimensional measurement method. The phase coding method based on the principle of structured light embeds the codeword into the intensity of the fringe in the form of phase, which is insensitive to surface contrast, ambient light and camera noise due to the use of phase instead of intensity to determine the code word, so it has stronger robustness. The research progress of three dimensional measurement methods of phase-coding was reviewed, and the three-dimensional measurement principles based on phase encoding was summarized, including the design method of initial phase, the generation method of encoded fringes, phase calculation methods, acquisition and correction of fringe order, and acquisition of absolute phase. Some experimental results were given, and the advantages and disadvantages of the phase coding method were pointed out. Finally, the challenges faced by the technology were discussed, and the future development direction of the field was pointed out.

Abstract:In the field of fringe projection profilometry, phase sensitivity is a critical factor influencing the precision of object measurements. Traditional techniques that employ basic horizontal or vertical fringe projection often do not achieve optimal levels of phase sensitivity. The identification of the fringe angle that exhibits optimal phase sensitivity has been a significant area of research. The present study introduces a novel method for determining the optimal fringe angle, facilitating 3D reconstruction without the need for equipment adjustments. Initially, the optimal fringe is derived through mathematical analysis, and the system's position within each coordinate system is standardized, leading to the determination of the optimal fringe angle in the world coordinate system. Subsequently, an optimal fringe pattern, akin to that produced by a rotating projector, is generated based on the concept of rotation around a central point, with corresponding adjustments made to the calibration parameters. Finally, the optimal fringe is projected onto the target object for 3D reconstruction, thereby validating the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that this approach accurately identifies the optimal fringe angle, significantly enhancing both phase sensitivity and measurement accuracy. The accuracy of the measurement is significantly greater, by an order of magnitude, compared to the traditional method, with the error being approximately 50% of that associated with the currently established improved method.

Abstract:The phase-coding method for absolute phase measurement possesses a strong robustness because its codewords are encoded into phase domain rather than intensity. However, a misalignment problem arises between fringe order and wrapped phase in this method owing to random noises and image blurring, especially in the high-frequency fringes situation. Therefore, the measurement result is unavailable. To overcome this problem, an optimized phase-coding algorithm is proposed in the study. We use the sinusoidal patterns to generate two opposite binary masks, which can locate half of each codeword. Then, the K-means algorithm is used to correct the codewords errors. The accurate fringe order is obtained by merging two halves of codewords and the absolute phase is recovered afterward. The used method is experimentally verified by an established measurement system, and the results show the proposed method is robustness and efficiency.
