Abstract:Phase measuring profilometry based on structured illumination with a digital projector has great flexibility. However, the phase error introduced by the gamma nonlinearity of the projector and the presence of speckle noise inevitably decreases the accuracy and resolution of the measurement. This paper presents a new phase error correction algorithm by which the odd-step fringe projection is done twice with an initial phase shift of π between, and the two captured deformed fringe images are then digitally subtracted. The speckle noise is further suppressed by applying a sine-cosine median filter. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that this algorithm is effective and fast.

Abstract:Digital structured light（SL） profilometry is increasingly used in three-dimensional（3D） measurement technology.However, the nonlinearity of the off-the-shelf projectors and cameras seriously reduces the measurement accuracy. In this paper, first, we review the nonlinear effects of the projector–camera system in the phase-shifting structured light depth measurement method. We show that high order harmonic wave components lead to phase error in the phase-shifting method. Then a practical method based on frequency domain filtering is proposed for nonlinear error reduction. By using this method, the nonlinear calibration of the SL system is not required. Moreover, both the nonlinear effects of the projector and the camera can be effectively reduced. The simulations and experiments have verified our nonlinear correction method.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry is a significant method for three-dimensional measurement due to its non-contact and high accuracy. However, the motion-induced error will lead to the loss of measurement accuracy in dynamic scenes due to the disruption of the phase measurement process. In this paper, we introduce a novel motion error model that considers object motion causes the misalignment of the projection points on the camera, and propose the projection points tracking method to reduce the motion-induced error. First, the speckle pattern is added to projection sequences, after which the projection point displacements are determined using the digital image correlation (DIC) method between the adjacent speckle patterns. Finally, the fringe patterns are corrected using the image remapping method to calculate the 3D shape. Quantitative analysis and dynamic measurement experiments verify the feasibility of the proposed method. Different from 3D-DIC, we use one camera-projector system to realize high-accuracy measurement in dynamic scenes.

Abstract:For the 3D digitizing structure-light profilometry, five kinds of phase reconstructing (PR) algorithms, including Schofield's S-FFT (with 4 pairs of FFT & Inverse FFT operators) algorithm, Volkov's deterministic V-FFT PR algorithm (with only one pair of FFT operators and one Inverse FFT operator), quality-guided (QG) method, weighted least-square (WLS) method and a proposed Discrete-Cosine-Transform-Based (DCT-B) algorithm have been implemented and discussed in detail. The computer-simulated data show that the WLS and V-FFT enjoy the least phase error, but the QG algorithm achieves the trade-off between reliability and computational time. The S-FFT together with V-FFT method almost fails to deal with the experimental data with abrupt phase variance. Among the other three algorithms, the DCT-B algorithm shows its advantage over QG and WLS algorithms in settling these problems. Considering phase error and computational time, it could win the priority in PR. The experimental results also demonstrate that the proposed DCT-B algorithm could be firstly considered in the application of structure-light profilometry, especially to process the abrupt-phase maps.

Abstract:To realize the 3D profilometry,a four-step phase shifting method integrated with fringes projection was adopted.In the fringe-projection profilometry,a computer-simulated fringe patterns was projected on the free-form surface of object and the fringes were captured by the phase-shifting technique.Automatic image-processing software with the proposed DCT-based phase-reconstructing algorithm was developed to reconstruct the continuous phase map from fringe patterns.The final 3D profile of object was obtained from the phase map.The corresponding experiments were conducted independently.In interferometry,a new-type interferometer was proposed,which combined the radial shear interferometer with simultaneous phase-shifting technique.It was based on the optical path with two Jamin glass plates and realized the collection of four frames of fringe patterns according to the principle of polarized light.It can test the full-field surface with different sizes and be free from vibration.The theoretical accuracy of this interferometer can reach 1/100 wavelength.Because it enjoys high anti-Jamming performance,the proposed interferometer can realize the high-precision dynamic measurement of aspheric surface under the common conditions without any vibration-isolated setup.
Improved Dual-Frequency On-Line Phase Measuring Profilometry Based On Full-Cycle Equal Phase-Shift Algorithm

Abstract:Based on the relative position relationship between the measured object and the high-frequency fringe in the on-line three-dimensional (3D) measurement, an improved dual-frequency on-line 3D measurement method is proposed. By controlling the acquisition points when the measured object moves, the light intensity distribution of the high-frequency fringe in each deformed pattern after pixel matching can be exactly consistent. The full-cycle equal phase-shift algorithm is directly applied for phase calculation so that the filtering process is avoided and the 3D reconstruction accuracy is improved. The light intensity component of the high-frequency fringe is designed to be much smaller than that of the low-frequency fringe, and it can be considered as faint background light and the interference of high-frequency fringe on phase calculation is further reduced. The simulated and experimental results show that compared with other methods, the proposed method can improve the reconstruction accuracy effectively.

Abstract:Digital fringe projection profilometry is one of the most widely utilized non-contact three-dimensional (3D) profile measurement techniques. The phase error caused by nonlinear gamma of digital projectors and cameras eventually reduces the 3D measurement accuracy. This kind of phase error still cannot be detected directly at present. A novel method is present in this paper not only to measure the phase error straightforwardly but also to extract the full-field error distributions. With the aid of the detected phase error distributions, the full-field look-up tables?(LUTs) can be obtained to correct the phase measurement result. A set of experiments to validate our methods has been performed. Experimental results well prove that the full-field phase error distributions have been detected successfully, and after utilizing our phase correction method the phase accuracy is obviously improved.

Abstract:Phase-coding methods have been widely used for three-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement, which use sinusoidal phase-shifting patterns to recover wrapped phase and the stair phase-coding patterns to determine the fringe order. However, due to the system nonlinearity, random noises, and image blurring, the total number of codewords that can be used is limited. In order to increase the number of codewords, this article presents a two-digit phase-coding (TDPC) strategy, in which each fringe of the sinusoidal phase-shifting patterns corresponds to a two-digit codeword encoded in the phase-coding patterns. In this way, more codewords can be generated without increasing additional patterns. Experiments of the cup and sculptures have been carried out, and the results confirm that the TDPC method can recover the 3-D shape of objects more robustly. Meanwhile, the precision experiment of a standard ball proves the high accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP), with benefits such as high precision and a large depth of field, is a popular 3D optical measurement method widely used in precision reconstruction scenarios. However, the pixel brightness at reflective edges does not satisfy the conditions of the ideal pixel-wise phase-shifting model due to the influence of scene texture and system defocus, resulting in severe phase errors. To address this problem, we theoretically analyze the non-pixel-wise phase propagation model for texture edges and propose a reprojection strategy based on scene texture modulation. The strategy first obtains the reprojection weight mask by projecting typical FPP patterns and calculating the scene texture reflection ratio, then reprojects stripe patterns modulated by the weight mask to eliminate texture edge effects, and finally fuses coarse and refined phase maps to generate an accurate phase map. We validated the proposed method on various texture scenes, including a smooth plane, depth surface, and curved surface. Experimental results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the phase at the texture edge decreased by 53.32%, proving the effectiveness of the reprojection strategy in eliminating depth errors at texture edges.

Abstract:An on-line Phase Measuring Profilometry(PMP)based on least-square iteration was proposed to simplify the complexities of system installment and to avoid the influence of additional phase ?shifting caused by the non-parallelism between grating lines and object's displacement in the PMP based on synchronous detection.In measurement processing,the sinusoidal grating with arbitrary grid line direction was projected onto an object,and a CCD was used to capture the deformed fringe patterns.After pixel matching,fringe patterns were used to evaluate the phase distribution.The phase-shifting was determined as arbitrary values by both projection system and object's displacement.Finally,the least-square iteration was used to calculate the phases.The experiment result shows when the grating line directions on the reference plane are changed,the measurement resultsare stable,and the root-mean-square error is less than 0.169 9mm.It concludes that the proposed method relaxes the restriction of the spatial location of measurement equipment,increases the measurement flexibility and makes the PMP more applicable.

Abstract:The gamma nonlinearity of the digital projector leads to obvious phase errors in the phase measuring profilometry. Based on the Fourier spectrum analysis of the captured pattern, a robust gamma correction method is proposed in this paper. An orthogonal sinusoidal grating precoded with two different known gamma values is used to evaluate the gamma value of the pattern. The evaluated gamma value is then encoded into the computer-generated phase-shifting fringe patterns before the fringe patterns are sent to the digital projector, which makes the captured fringe patterns well-sinusoidal and alleviates the phase errors caused by the gamma nonlinearity. Compared with other gamma correction methods, only one captured pattern is needed to evaluate the gamma value without loss of the accuracy. With the proposed method, a fast and accurate three-dimensional shape measurement can be achieved using the conventional three-step phase-shifting algorithm. Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has attracted wide attention in optical 3D measurement field for its high resolution, high accuracy, and simple system construction. However, the inherent requirements of FPP's measurement speed and accuracy are contradictory. We adopt a 3+1 phase retrieval strategy combining phase shift and the Hilbert transform algorithm to achieve high-speed, high-precision simultaneous measurements with only four binary fringe patterns. Furthermore, when using temporal phase unwrapping, fringe order errors (FOEs) are inevitable. Although these FOEs do not affect neighboring pixels, they are brought into the final point cloud coordinates by the absolute phase value. We propose a fringe order correction method to eliminate FOEs. The feasibility and effectiveness of this method are verified by the experimental results.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is widely used in 3D vision measurement because of its high robustness and measurement accuracy. In the case of HDR objects, due to the problem of surface reflectivity, the obtained image will be overexposed. This will cause the sinusoidality of the fringes projected on the surface of the object in the acquired image to be interfered, resulting in a phase error in the calculated wrapped phase. Therefore, a polarization-encoded sinusoidal structured light is proposed to enhance the sinusoidality of the fringe. The phase information contained in the polarized sinusoidal structured light fringe is only related to the polarization state, not to the light intensity. A polarization coding assisted structured light measurement strategy (PASM) is proposed. This method uses polarization coding assisted polarization phase-shifting fringes for phase unwrapping. The angle of the linear polarizer is set to zero in this method, and it does not require rotating the polarizer. It only needs a single exposure to improve the fringe quality and obtain a more stable unwrapping phase. The experimental results show that the obtained polarization fringes have better sinusoidality, and the phase unwrapping can be more accurate. The reconstructed 3D point cloud also does not appear missing and has better accuracy. It is a reliable method for vision measurement of HDR objects.

Abstract:In a digital stripe projection structured light system, the nonlinear phase error is generated by the gamma effect of both the projector, camera, and other electronic devices. One of the existing nonlinear correction methods is active correction by projecting ideal fringes as far as possible, and the other is passive compensation after capturing aberrant fringes. The former has higher accuracy but needs to capture a large number of fringe patterns, while the latter does not need many fringe patterns, but is not only greatly affected by random noise and out-of-focus effects, but also has poor accuracy. In this paper, an optimal algorithm for eliminating nonlinear error based on global statistical phase feature function (GSPF) is proposed. The phase distribution can be estimated from the difference between the global cumulative distribution function and the normalized cumulative distribution function. For an ideal fringe pattern without nonlinear error and a fringe pattern with nonlinear error, the region wrapped by the x-axis normalized cumulative distribution function is much smaller than the region wrapped by the x-axis global cumulative distribution function, and the larger the nonlinear error is, the larger the difference between the two is. Therefore, the global statistical phase feature function can be used for nonlinear error correction. Then the optimal nonlinear error correction is performed based on the minimum difference between the compensated phase entropy and the ideal phase entropy. The method does not require too many steps of phase-shifting, and only three fringe patterns are needed to realize accurate and robust correction. Experimental results show that the method is fast, highly accurate and robust. Using this technique, high accuracy measurements can be achieved with the traditional three-step phase-shifting algorithm.
